Design of Environmental-Friendly Carbon-Based Catalysts for Efficient Advanced Oxidation Processes

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) represent one of the most promising strategies to generate highly reactive species to deal with organic dye-contaminated water. However, developing green and cost-effective catalysts is still a long-term goal for the wide practical application of AOPs. Herein, we demonstrated doping cobalt in porous carbon to efficiently catalyze the oxidation of the typically persistent organic pollutant rhodamine B, via multiple reactive species through the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The catalysts were prepared by facile pyrolysis of nanocomposites with a core of cobalt-loaded silica and a shell of phenolic resin (Co-C/SiO2). It showed that the produced 1O2 could effectively attack the electron-rich functional groups in rhodamine B, promoting its molecular chain breakage and accelerating its oxidative degradation reaction with reactive oxygen-containing radicals. The optimized Co-C/SiO2 catalyst exhibits impressive catalytic performance, with a degradation rate of rhodamine B up to 96.7% in 14 min and a reaction rate constant (k) as high as 0.2271 min-1, which suggested promising potential for its practical application.

Facile introduction of coordinative Fe into oxygen-enriched graphite carbon nitride for efficient photo-Fenton degradation of tetracycline

Tetracycline (TC) antibiotics have been widely used over the past decades, and their massive discharge led to serious water pollution. Photo-Fenton process has gained ever-increasing attention for its excellent oxidizing ability and friendly solar energy utilization ability in TC polluted water treatment. This work introduced coordinative Fe into oxygen-enriched graphite carbon nitride (OCN) to form FeOCN composites for efficient photo-Fenton process. Hemin was chosen as the source to provide the source of coordinative Fe-Nx groups. The degradation efficiency of TC reached 82.1 % within 40 min of irradiation, and remained 76.9 % after five runs of reaction. The degradation intermediates of TC were detected and the possible degradation pathways were gained. It was found that h+, OH, and O2- played major roles in TC degradation. Notably, the photo-Fenton performance of FeOCN was stable in highly saline water or strong acid/base environment (pH 3.0-9.0). Besides, H2O2 can be generated in-situ in this photo-Fenton process, which is favorable for practical application. It can be anticipated that the coordinative FeOCN composites will promote the application of photo-Fenton oxidation process in TC polluted water treatment.

Photocatalytic fuel cell based on integrated silicon nanowire arrays/zinc oxide heterojunction anode for simultaneous wastewater treatment and electricity production

Photocatalytic fuel cells (PFCs) convert organic waste into electricity, thereby providing a potential solution for remediating environmental pollution and solving energy crises. Most PFCs for energy generation applications use powder photocatalysts, which have poor mechanical stability, high internal resistance, and may detach from the substrate during reactions, leading to unstable performance. Integrated photoelectrodes can overcome the drawbacks of powder catalysts. In this study, an integrated photoanode was prepared based on a silicon nanowire arrays/zinc oxide (Si NWs/ZnO) heterojunction by combining metal-assisted chemical etching (MACE) and hydrothermal methods. The resulting photoanode was used to assemble a PFC for simultaneous electricity generation and Rhodamine (RhB) dye wastewater degradation. This PFC showed excellent cell performance under irradiation, with a short-circuit current density of 0.183 Am-2, an open-circuit voltage (OCV) of 0.72 V, and a maximum power density of 0.87 W m-2. It could also be used continuously 20 times while degrading > 90% of RhB. This performance was ascribed to the three-dimensional (3D) structure and large surface area of Si NWs, as well as the matched band structure of ZnO, which facilitated the efficient separation and transport of photogenerated carriers in Si NWs/ZnO. The integrated structure also shortened the carrier transport pathways and suppressed carrier recombination. This research provides a foundation for the development of efficient, stable, low-cost, small-scale PFCs.

Designing oxygen vacancy mediated bismuth molybdate (Bi2MoO6)/N-rich carbon nitride (C3N5) S-scheme heterojunctions for boosted photocatalytic removal of tetracycline antibiotic and Cr(VI): Intermediate toxicity and mechanism insight

Polymeric N-rich carbon nitride of C₃N₅ is being utilized as a new visible-light-driven catalyst due to its narrower bandgap (∼2.0 eV). Building step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunction by coupling with other semiconductors especially those own oxygen vacancies (OVs) can further upgrade the photocatalytic performance of C₃N₅-based photocatalysts. Herein, a novel S-scheme heterojunction of OVs mediated Bi₂MoO₆/C₃N₅ was fabricated by in-situ growing Bi₂MoO₆ nanoparticles with OVs on C₃N₅ nanosheets. Benefiting from the efficient separation and transfer of high energetic charge carriers by S-scheme charge migration, enriched structural defects, as well as the close contact by the in-situ growth, the heterojunction exhibited superior visible-light photocatalytic performance toward the removal of tetracycline (TC) and Cr(VI) than C₃N₅, Bi₂MoO₆, and their mechanical mixture under visible light. The TC degradation routes and the bio-toxicity evolution of TC were explored. Moreover, the photocatalytic mechanism for TC decomposition and Cr(VI) reduction over Bi₂MoO₆/C₃N₅ with OVs were elucidated. This work presents a newfangled vision for designing promising C₃N₅-based S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts for pollution control.
