Bimetallic two-dimensional materials for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

Efficient and Stable pH-Universal Water Electrolysis Catalyzed by N-Doped Hollow Carbon Confined RuIrOx Nanocrystals

A facile strategy is developed to fabricate 3 nm RuIrOx nanocrystals anchored onto N-doped hollow carbon for highly efficient and pH-universal overall water splitting and alkaline seawater electrolysis. The designed catalyst exhibits much lower overpotential and superior stability than most previously reported Ru- and Ir-based electrocatalysts for hydrogen/oxygen evolution reactions. It also manifests excellent overall water splitting activities and maintains ≈100% Faradic efficiency with a cell voltage of 1.53, 1.51, and 1.54 V at 10 mA cm-2 for 140, 255, and 200 h in acid, alkaline, and alkaline seawater electrolytes, respectively. The excellent electrocatalytic performance can be attributed to solid bonding between RuIrOx and the hollow carbon skeleton, and effective electronic coupling between Ru and Ir, thus inducing its remarkable electrocatalytic activities and long-lasting stability.

Construction of n-type homogeneous to improve interfacial carrier transfer for enhanced photoelectrocatalytic hydrolysis

Photoelectrocatalyzed hydrogen production plays an important role in the path to carbon neutrality. The construction of heterojunctions provides an ideal example of an oxygen precipitation reaction. In this work, the performance of the n-n type heterojunction CeBTC@FeBTC/NIF in the photoelectronically coupled catalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) reaction is presented. The efficient transfer of carriers between components enhances the catalytic activity. Besides, the construction of heterojunctions optimizes the energy level structure and increases the absorption of light, and the microstructure forms holes with a blackbody effect that also enhances light absorption. Consequently, CeBTC@FeBTC/NIF has excellent photoelectric coupling catalytic properties and requires an overpotential of only 300 mV to drive a current density of 100 mA cm-2 under illumination. More importantly, the n-n heterojunction was found to be effective in enhancing charge and photogenerated electron migration by examining the carrier density of each component and carrier diffusion at the interface.

The Promising Seesaw Relationship Between Activity and Stability of Ru-Based Electrocatalysts for Acid Oxygen Evolution and Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis

The development of electrocatalysts that are not reliant on iridium for efficient acid-oxygen evolution is a critical step towards the proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) and green hydrogen industry. Ruthenium-based electrocatalysts have garnered widespread attention due to their remarkable catalytic activity and lower commercial price. However, the challenge lies in balancing the seesaw relationship between activity and stability of these electrocatalysts during the acid-oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This review delves into the progress made in Ru-based electrocatalysts with regards to acid OER and PEMWE applications. It highlights the significance of customizing the acidic OER mechanism of Ru-based electrocatalysts through the coordination of adsorption evolution mechanism (AEM) and lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism (LOM) to attain the ideal activity and stability relationship. The promising tradeoffs between the activity and stability of different Ru-based electrocatalysts, including Ru metals and alloys, Ru single-atomic materials, Ru oxides, and derived complexes, and Ru-based heterojunctions, as well as their applicability to PEMWE systems, are discussed in detail. Furthermore, this paper offers insights on in situ control of Ru active sites, dynamic catalytic mechanism, and commercial application of PEMWE. Based on three-way relationship between cost, activity, and stability, the perspectives and development are provided.

Facile synthesis of ultrafine iron-cobalt (FeCo) nanocrystallite-embedded boron/nitrogen-codoped porous carbon nanosheets: Accelerated water splitting catalysts

Designing two-dimensional (2D) porous carbon nanosheets is expected to boost the water splitting efficiency of low-cost iron (Fe) and cobalt (Co)-based catalysts. Nevertheless, the aggregations, tedious preparation procedures, and expensive precursors for synthesizing 2D porous carbon nanosheets have hindered their widespread application. Herein, for the first time, we developed a low-cost method for large-scale and rapid synthesis of the three-dimensional (3D) hierarchically porous architectures self-assembled by the ultrafine FeCo nanoparticles embedded and boron/nitrogen-codoped 2D porous carbon nanosheets (denoted as FeCo@BNPCNS). The optimal FeCo@BNPCNS-900 exhibited abundant porous channels, a large surface area, and vast carbon edges/defects. Therefore, 8.10 at% electrochemically active boron (B)/nitrogen (N) centers were doped into the porous carbon nanosheets. In an alkaline solution, the optimal FeCo@BNPCNS-900 nanosheets revealed excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalytic activity, surpassing commercial 20 wt% Pt/C. For instance, the HER potential at 10 mA cm-2 [-50.6 mV vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)] of FeCo@BNPCNS-900 was even 19.3 mV more positive than that of commercial 20 wt% Pt/C (-69.9 mV vs. RHE). Meanwhile, its oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic activity was just a little worse than ruthenium oxide (RuO2). The water electrolysis cell of FeCo@BNPCNS-900 nanosheets just required a small voltage of 1.589 V for full water splitting to achieve 10 mA cm-2, even 70.3 mV more negative than that of the state-of-the-art 20 wt% Pt/C||RuO2 benchmark (1.660 V) with outstanding stability. The perfect 3D hierarchically porous and honeycomb-like architecture, abundant porous channels/mesopores, and uniformly dispersed electrocatalytically active sites on FeCo@BNPCNS-900 nanosheets were responsible for the outstanding water splitting performance. Finally, this study provides an efficient strategy for the large-scale, rapid, and low-cost synthesis of 2D porous carbon nanosheets without using any template, surfactant, or expensive precursors.

Fe-doping and oxygen vacancy achieved by electrochemical activation and precipitation/dissolution equilibrium in NiOOH for oxygen evolution reaction

The poor conductivities and instabilities of accessible nickel oxyhydroxides hinder their use as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. Herein, we constructed Fe-NiOOH-OV-600, an Fe-doped nickel oxide hydroxide with abundant oxygen vacancies supported on nickel foam (NF), using a hydrothermal method and an electrochemical activation strategy involving 600 cycles of cyclic voltammetry, assisted by the precipitation/dissolution equilibrium of ferrous sulfide (FeS) in the electrolyte. This two-step method endows the catalyst with abundant Fe-containing active sites while maintaining the ordered structure of nickel oxide hydroxide (NiOOH). Characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that synergy between trace amounts of the Fe dopant and the oxygen vacancies not only promotes the generation of reconstructed active layers but also optimizes the electronic structure and adsorption capacity of the active sites. Consequently, the as-prepared Fe-NiOOH-OV-600 delivered large current densities of 100 and 1000 mA cm-2 for the OER at overpotentials of only 253 and 333 mV in 1 mol/L KOH. Moreover, the catalyst is stable for at least 100 h at 500 mA cm-2. This work provides insight into the design of efficient transition-metal-based electrocatalysts for the OER.

Recent advances in iridium-based catalysts with different dimensions for the acidic oxygen evolution reaction

Proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis is considered a promising technology for green hydrogen production, and iridium (Ir)-based catalysts are the best materials for anodic oxygen evolution reactions (OER) owing to their high stability and anti-corrosion ability in a strong acid electrolyte. The properties of Ir-based nanocatalysts can be tuned by rational dimension engineering, which has received intensive attention recently for catalysis ability boosting. To achieve a comprehensive understanding of the structural and catalysis performance, herein, an overview of the recent progress was provided for Ir-based catalysts with different dimensions for the acidic OER. The promotional effect was first presented in terms of the nano-size effect, synergistic effect, and electronic effect based on the dimensional effect, then the latest progress of Ir-based catalysts classified into zero-dimensional (0D), one-dimensional (1D), two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) catalysts was introduced in detail; and the practical application of some typical examples in the real PEM water electrolyzers (PEMWE) was also presented. Finally, the problems and challenges faced by current dimensionally engineered Ir-based catalysts in acidic electrolytes were discussed. It is concluded that the increased surface area and catalytic active sites can be realized by dimensional engineering strategies, while the controllable synthesis of different dimensional structured catalysts is still a great challenge, and the correlation between structure and performance, especially for the structural evolution during the electrochemical operation process, should be probed in depth. Hopefully, this effort could help understand the progress of dimensional engineering of Ir-based catalysts in OER catalysis and contribute to the design and preparation of novel efficient Ir-based catalysts.
