Hierarchical Composite with Self-Adaptive Anisotropic Deformation for Thermal Protection System

Rigid thermal protection materials such as ultra-high-temperature ceramics are desirable for applications in aerospace vehicles, but few materials can currently satisfy the emerging high-temperature sealing requirements for dynamic gaps created by the mismatch of the thermal expansion of different protection layers. Here, we design and fabricate a flexible biomimetic anisotropic deformation composite by multilayer cocuring onto fiber fabrics. It displays superior anisotropic deformation, whose longitudinal expansion ratio is 48 times greater than the transverse expansion ratio at specific temperatures. Furthermore, the ordered carbon structure created by transition-metal-catalyzed graphitization and the C/Si synergistic effect resulting from the combination of biomimetic fiber fabrics and SR enable the in situ formation of a high-temperature-resistant SiC crystalline phase within the char layer, ultimately resulting in exceptional thermal protection properties. By constructing hollow structures in situ, the back temperature of the composite, which is only 4.33 mm thick, is stabilized at 140 °C under the condition of continuous butane flame ablation (1300 °C) for 420 s. Multilayer structure and flexible features can facilitate large-scale preparation and arbitrary cutting and bending, adapted to different thermal protection areas.

From rosin to novel bio-based silicone rubber: a review

Rosin is a characteristic natural renewable resource. In view of the unique hydrogenated phenanthrene ring skeleton structure of rosin, it can be designed and synthesized to modify silicone rubber for improving its mechanical properties, thermal stability, and other properties. In this paper, the research progress of silicone rubber modified by rosin and its derivatives is reviewed, including internal or surface modification of room temperature or high temperature vulcanized silicone rubber. The different chemical modifications and polymerization pathways to obtain bio-based silicone rubber (e.g. rosin-based silicone cross-linking agent, filler compound rosin-based silicone cross-linking agent, rosin-based polymer, and rosin quaternary ammonium salt bifunctional antibacterial coating) are discussed and its research prospect is reviewed. Overall, the present review article will provide a quantitative experimental basis for rosin to produce bio-renewable multifunctional silicone rubber to increase our level of understanding of the behavior of this important class of silicone rubber and other similar bio-based polymers.

Synthesis of a Novel Bifunctional Epoxy Double-Decker Silsesquioxane: Improvement of the Thermal Stability and Dielectric Properties of Polybenzoxazine

In this study a new type of bifunctional epoxy compound (DDSQ-EP) based on double-decker silsesquioxane (DDSQ) was synthesized by process of alkaline hydrolysis condensation of phenyltrimethoxysilane and corner capping reaction with dichloromethylvinylsilane, followed by epoxidation reaction of vinyl groups. The resultant structures were confirmed using Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry and time-of-flight mass spectrometry, respectively. The DDSQ-EP was incorporated into polybenzoxazine to obtain the PBZ/DDSQ-EP nanocomposites. The uniform dispersion of DDSQ-EP in the nanocomposites was verified by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope. The reactions occurred during the curing of the composites and were investigated using infrared spectroscopy of segmented cures. Dynamic mechanical analysis and thermal gravimetric analysis indicated that the storage modulus, glass transition temperature and thermal stability of PBZ/DDSQ-EP were increased in comparison with pure benzoxazine resins. Assessment of dielectric properties demonstrated that the dielectric permittivity and dielectric loss of polybenzoxazine decreased slightly because of the addition of DDSQ-EP.

High-Performance Properties of an Aerospace Epoxy Resin Loaded with Carbon Nanofibers and Glycidyl Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane

This paper proposes a new multifunctional flame retardant carbon nanofiber/glycidyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (GPOSS) epoxy formulation specially designed for lightweight composite materials capable of fulfilling the ever-changing demands of the future aerospace industry. The multifunctional resin was designed to satisfy structural and functional requirements. In particular, this paper explores the advantages deriving from the combined use of GPOSS and CNFs (short carbon nanofibers) to obtain multifunctional resins. The multifunctional material was prepared by incorporating in the epoxy matrix heat-treated carbon nanofibers (CNFs) at the percentage of 0.5 wt% and GPOSS compound at 5 wt% in order to increase the mechanical performance, electrical conductivity, thermal stability and flame resistance property of the resulting nanocomposite. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) shows that the values of the Storage Modulus (S.M.) of the resin alone and the resin containing solubilized GPOSS nanocages are almost similar in a wide range of temperatures (from 30 °C to 165 °C). The presence of CNFs, in the percentage of 0.5 wt%, determines an enhancement in the S.M. of 700 MPa from −30 °C to 180 °C with respect to the resin matrix and the resin/GPOSS systems. Hence, a value higher than 2700 MPa is detected from 30 °C to 110 °C. Furthermore, the electrical conductivity of the sample containing both GPOSS and CNFs reaches the value of 1.35 × 10−1 S/m, which is a very satisfying value to contrast the electrical insulating property of the epoxy systems. For the first time, TUNA tests have been performed on the formulation where the advantages of GPOSS and CNFs are combined. TUNA investigation highlights an electrically conductive network well distributed in the sample. The ignition time of the multifunctional nanocomposite is higher than that of the sample containing GPOSS alone of about 35%.
