Atomically Precise Nanometer-Sized Pt Catalysts with an Additional Photothermy Functionality

Atomically precise ~1-nm Pt nanoparticles (nanoclusters, NCs) with ambient stability are important in fundamental research and exhibit diverse practical applications (catalysis, biomedicine, etc.). However, synthesizing such materials is challenging. Herein, by employing the mixture ligand protecting strategy, we successfully synthesized the largest organic-ligand-protected (~1-nm) Pt23 NCs precisely characterized with mass spectrometry and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Interestingly, natural population analysis and Bader charge calculation indicate an alternate, varying charge -layer distribution in the sandwich-like Pt23 NC kernel. Pt23 NCs can catalyze the oxygen reduction reaction under acidic conditions without requiring calcination and other treatments, and the resulting specific and mass activities without further treatment are sevenfold and eightfold higher than those observed for commercial Pt/C catalysts, respectively. Density functional theory and d-band center calculations interpret the high activity. Furthermore, Pt23 NCs exhibit a photothermal conversion efficiency of 68.4 % under 532-nm laser irradiation and can be used at least for six cycles, thus demonstrating great potential for practical applications.

Activation of robust bonds by carbonyl complexes of Mn, Fe and Co

Metal carbonyl complexes possess among the most storied histories of any compound class in organometallic chemistry. Nonetheless, these old dogs continue to be taught new tricks. In this Feature, we review the historic discoveries and recent advances in cleaving robust bonds (e.g., C-H, C-O, C-F) using carbonyl complexes of three metals: Mn, Fe, and Co. The use of Mn, Fe, and Co carbonyl catalysts in controlling selectivity during hydrofunctionalization reactions is also discussed. The chemistry of these earth-abundant metals in the field of robust bond functionalization is particularly relevant in the context of sustainability. We expect that an up-to-date perspective on these seemingly simple organometallic species will emphasize the wellspring of reactivity that continues to be available for discovery.

Highly Reduced Ruthenium Carbide Carbonyl Clusters: Synthesis, Molecular Structure, Reactivity, Electrochemistry, and Computational Investigation of [Ru6C(CO)15]4

The reaction of [Ru6C(CO)16]2- (1) with NaOH in DMSO resulted in the formation of a highly reduced [Ru6C(CO)15]4- (2), which was readily protonated by acids, such as HBF4·Et2O, to [HRu6C(CO)15]3- (3). Oxidation of 2 with [Cp2Fe][PF6] or [C7H7][BF4] in CH3CN resulted in [Ru6C(CO)15(CH3CN)]2- (5), which was quantitatively converted into 1 after exposure to CO atmosphere. The reaction of 2 with a mild methylating agent such as CH3,I afforded the purported [Ru6C(CO)14(COCH3)]3- (6). By employing a stronger reagent, that is, CF3SO3CH3, a mixture of [HRu6C(CO)16]- (4), [H3Ru6C(CO)15]- (7), and [Ru6C(CO)15(CH3CNCH3)]- (8) was obtained. The molecular structures of 2-5, 7, and 8 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction as their [NEt4]4[2]·CH3CN, [NEt4]3[3], [NEt4][4], [NEt4]2[5], [NEt4][7], and [NEt4][8]·solv salts. The carbyne-carbide cluster 6 was partially characterized by IR spectroscopy and ESI-MS, and its structure was computationally predicted using DFT methods. The redox behavior of 2 and 3 was investigated by electrochemical and IR spectroelectrochemical methods. Computational studies were performed in order to unravel structural and thermodynamic aspects of these octahedral Ru-carbide carbonyl clusters displaying miscellaneous ligands and charges in comparison with related iron derivatives.

From M6 to M12, M19 and M38 molecular alloy Pt-Ni carbonyl nanoclusters: selective growth of atomically precise heterometallic nanoclusters

Heterometallic Chini-type clusters [Pt_6-xNi_x(CO)₁₂]^2- (x = 0-6) were obtained by reactions of [Pt₆(CO)₁₂]^2- with Ni-clusters such as [Ni₆(CO)₁₂]^2-, [Ni₉(CO)₁₈]^2- and [H₂Ni₁₂(CO)₂₁]^2-, or from [Pt₉(CO)₁₈]^2- and [Ni₆(CO)₁₂]^2-. The Pt/Ni composition of [Pt_6-xNi_x(CO)₁₂]^2- (x = 0-6) depended on the nature of the reagents employed and their stoichiometry. Reactions of [Pt₉(CO)₁₈]^2- with [Ni₉(CO)₁₈]^2- and [H₂Ni₁₂(CO)₂₁]^2-, as well as reactions of [Pt₁₂(CO)₂₄]^2- with [Ni₆(CO)₁₂]^2-, [Ni₉(CO)₁₈]^2- and [H₂Ni₁₂(CO)₂₁]^2-, afforded [Pt_9-xNi_x(CO)₁₈]^2- (x = 0-9) species. [Pt_6-xNi_x(CO)₁₂]^2- (x = 1-5) were converted into [Pt_12-xNi_x(CO)₂₁]^4- (x = 2-10) upon heating in CH₃CN at 80 °C, with almost complete retention of the Pt/Ni composition. Reaction of [Pt_12-xNi_x(CO)₂₁]^4- (x ≈ 8) with HBF₄·Et₂O afforded the [HPt_14+xNi_24-x(CO)₄₄]^5- (x ≈ 0.7) nanocluster. Finally, [Pt_19-xNi_x(CO)₂₂]^4- (x = 2-6) could be obtained by heating [Pt_9-xNi_x(CO)₁₈]^2- (x = 1-3) in CH₃CN at 80 °C, or [Pt_6-xNi_x(CO)₁₂]^2- (2-4) in DMSO at 130 °C. The molecular structures of these new alloy nanoclusters have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The site preference of Pt and Ni within their metal cages has been computationally investigated. The electrochemical and IR spectroelectrochemical behavior of [Pt_19-xNi_x(CO)₂₂]^4- (x = 3.11) has been studied and compared to the isostructural homometallic nanocluster [Pt₁₉(CO)₂₂]^4-.

From Small Metal Clusters to Molecular Nanoarchitectures with a Core-Shell Structure: The Synthesis, Redox Fingerprint, Theoretical Analysis, and Solid-State Structure of [Co38As12(CO)50]4

The cluster [Co₃₈As₁₂(CO)₅₀]^4- was obtained by pyrolysis of [Co₆As(CO)₁₆]^-. The metal cage features a closed-packed core inside a Co/As shell that progressively deforms from a cubic face-centered symmetry. The redox and acid-base reactivities were determined by cyclic voltammetry and spectrophotometric titrations. The calculated electron density revealed the shell-constrained distribution of the atomic charges, induced by the presence of arsenic.

Looking at platinum carbonyl nanoclusters as superatoms

Although the chemistry of carbonyl-protected platinum nanoclusters is well established, their bonding mode remains poorly understood. In most of them, the average Pt oxidation state is zero or slightly negative, leading to the apparent average configuration 5d¹⁰ 6s^ε (ε = 0 or very small) and the apparent conclusion that metal-metal bonding cannot arise from the completely filled 5d shell nor from the empty (or almost empty) 6s orbitals. However, DFT calculations show in fact that in these species the actual average configuration is 5d^10-x 6s^x, which provides to the whole cluster a significant total number of 6s electrons that ensures metal-metal bonding. This ("excited") average configuration is to be related to that of coinage metals in ligated group 11 nanoclusters (nd¹⁰ (n + 1)s^x). Calculations show that metal-metal bonding in most of these platinum nanoclusters can be rationalized within the concepts of superatoms and supermolecules, in a similar way as for group 11 nanoclusters. The "excited" 5d^10-x 6s^x configuration results from a level crossing between 5d combinations and 6s combinations, the former transferring their electrons to the latter. This level crossing, which does not exist in the bare Pt_n clusters, is induced by the ligand shell, the role of which being thus not innocent with respect to metal-metal bonding.

Synthesis, molecular structure and fluxional behavior of the elusive [HRu4(CO)12]3- carbonyl anion

The elusive mono-hydride tri-anion [HRu₄(CO)₁₂]^3- (4) has been isolated and fully characterized for the first time. Cluster 4 can be obtained by the deprotonation of [H₃Ru₄(CO)₁₂]^- (2) with NaOH in DMSO. A more convenient synthesis is represented by the reaction of [HRu₃(CO)₁₁]^- (6) with an excess of NaOH in DMSO. The molecular structure of 4 has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) as the [NEt₄]₃[4] salt. It displays a tetrahedral structure of pseudo C_3v symmetry with the unique hydride ligand capping a triangular Ru₃ face. Variable temperature (VT) ¹H and ¹³C{¹H} NMR experiments indicate that 4 is fluxional in solution and reveal an equilibrium between the C_3v isomer found in the solid state and a second isomer with C_s symmetry. Protonation-deprotonation reactions inter-converting H₄Ru₄(CO)₁₂ (1), [H₃Ru₄(CO)₁₂]^- (2), [H₂Ru₄(CO)₁₂]^2- (3), [HRu₄(CO)₁₂]^3- (4) and the purported [Ru₄(CO)₁₂]^4- (5) have been monitored by IR and ¹H NMR spectroscopy. Whilst attempting the optimization of the synthesis of 4, crystals of [NEt₄]₂[Ru₃(CO)₉(CO₃)] ([NEt₄]₂[7]) were obtained. Anion 7 contains an unprecedented CO₃^2- ion bonded to a zero-valent Ru₃(CO)₉ fragment. Finally, the reaction of 6 as the [N(PPh₃)₂]⁺ ([PPN]⁺) salt with NaOH in DMSO affords [Ru₃(CO)₉(NPPh₃)]^- (9) instead of 4. Computational DFT studies have been carried out in order to support experimental evidence and the location of the hydride ligands as well as to shed light on possible isomers.

Structure-Property Relationships of Inorganic-Organic Hybrid Semiconducting Se-Fe-Cu-CO Polymers

A novel family of inorganic-organic-hybrid SeFe₃(CO)₉-dipyridyl two- and one-dimensional Cu polymers was synthesized via the three-component liquid-assisted grinding (LAG) of [Cu(MeCN)₄]⁺, inorganic cluster [SeFe₃(CO)₉]^2- (1), and rigid conjugated dipyridyls 4,4'-dipyridyl (dpy) and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpee) or flexible conjugation-interrupted dipyridyls 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpea) and 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane (bpp). They included a cluster-linked 2D polymer, [(μ₄-Se)Fe₃(CO)₉Cu₂(MeCN)(dpy)_1.5]_n (1-dpy-2D), a cluster-pendant 1D chain, [(μ₃-Se)Fe₃(CO)₉Cu₂(dpy)₃]_n (1-dpy-1D), cluster-blocked 1D polymers, [(μ₃-Se)Fe₃(CO)₉Cu₂(L)]_n (1-L-1D, L = bpee, bpea), and a cluster-linked 2D polymer, [(μ₄-Se)Fe₃(CO)₉Cu₂(bpp)₂]_n (1-bpp-2D). The reversible dimensionality transformations of these three types of polymers accompanied by the change in coordination modes of 1 were achieved by the LAG addition of 1/[Cu(MeCN)₄]⁺ or dipyridyl ligands. These polymers were found to possess tunable low-energy gaps (1.49-1.72 eV) that increased in the order regarding their structural features: cluster-linked 1-dpy-2D and 1-bpp-2D, cluster-blocked 1-bpea-1D and 1-bpee-1D, and cluster-pendant 1-dpy-1D and [(μ₃-Se)Fe₃(CO)₉Cu₂(L)_2.5]_n (L = bpee, 1-bpee-2D; bpea, 1-bpea-2D), indicative of the importance of the participation of cluster 1. The measured electrical conductivities of 1-bpp-2D, 1-bpea-1D, and 1-dpy-1D were 3.13 × 10^-7, 2.92 × 10^-7, and 2.30 × 10^-7 S·cm^-1, respectively, which were parallel for the trend in their energy gaps, revealing semiconducting behaviors, supported by XPS, XANES, and DFT calculations. The surprising semiconductivity of the conjugation-interrupted bpp-linked 1-bpp-2D was mainly ascribed to electron transport via C-H···O(carbonyl) hydrogen bonds and aromatic C-H···π contacts within its closely packed 2D layers. Water-/light-stable polymers 1-bpp-2D, 1-bpea-2D, and 1-dpy-1D were also demonstrated to exhibit excellent pseudo-first-order photodegradation toward nitroaromatics and organic dyes, where cluster-linked polymer 1-bpp-2D performed the best, as predicted by its structural features and narrow energy gap.

A Modular Strategy for Expanding Electron-Sink Capacity in Noncanonical Cluster Assemblies

A modular synthetic strategy is described whereby organometallic complexes exhibiting considerable electron-sink capacity may be assembled by using only a few simple molecular components. The Fe₂(PPh₂)₂(CO)₅ fragment was selected as a common electroactive component and was assembled around aromatic cores bearing one, two, or three isocyanide functional groups, with the resultant complexes possessing electron-sink capacities of two, four, and six electrons, respectively. The latter complex is noteworthy in that its electron-sink capacity was found to rival that of large multinuclear clusters (e.g., [Ni₃₂C₆(CO)₃₆]^6– and [Ni₃₈Pt₆(CO)₄₈]^6–), which are often considered as benchmarks of electron-sink behavior. Moreover, the modular assembly bearing three Fe₂(PPh₂)₂(CO)₅ fragments was observed to undergo reduction to a hexaanionic state over a potential window of about −1.4 to −2.1 V (vs Fc/Fc⁺), the relatively compressed range being attributed to potential inversions operative during the addition of the second, fourth, and sixth electrons. Such complexes may be designated noncanonical clusters because they exhibit redox properties similar to those of large multinuclear clusters yet lack the extensive network of metal–metal bonds and the condensed metallic cores that typify the latter.

By use of a modular synthetic strategy and relatively few molecular components, organometallic complexes exhibiting considerable electron-sink capacity have been characterized. Complexes bearing one, two, or three Fe₂(PPh₂)₂(CO)₅ fragments bound to aromatic isocyanide cores were found to possess electron-sink capacities of two, four, and six electrons, respectively, the latter rivaling the electron-sink capacity of large polynuclear cluster benchmarks.

Atomically Precise Ni-Pd Alloy Carbonyl Nanoclusters: Synthesis, Total Structure, Electrochemistry, Spectroelectrochemistry, and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy

The molecular nanocluster [Ni36-xPd5+x(CO)46]6- (x = 0.41) (16-) was obtained from the reaction of [NMe3(CH2Ph)]2[Ni6(CO)12] with 0.8 molar equivalent of [Pd(CH3CN)4][BF4]2 in tetrahydrofuran (thf). In contrast, [Ni37-xPd7+x(CO)48]6- (x = 0.69) (26-) and [HNi37-xPd7+x(CO)48]5- (x = 0.53) (35-) were obtained from the reactions of [NBu4]2[Ni6(CO)12] with 0.9-1.0 molar equivalent of [Pd(CH3CN)4][BF4]2 in thf. After workup, 35- was extracted in acetone, whereas 26- was soluble in CH3CN. The total structures of 16-, 26-, and 35- were determined with atomic precision by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Their metal cores adopted cubic close packed structures and displayed both substitutional and compositional disorder, in light of the fact that some positions could be occupied by either Ni or Pd. The redox behavior of these new Ni-Pd molecular alloy nanoclusters was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and in situ infrared spectroelectrochemistry. All three compounds 16-, 26-, and 35- displayed several reversible redox processes and behaved as electron sinks and molecular nanocapacitors. Moreover, to gain insight into the factors that affect the current-potential profiles, cyclic voltammograms were recorded at both Pt and glassy carbon working electrodes and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy experiments performed for the first time on molecular carbonyl nanoclusters.

Structural Chemistry of Giant Metal Based Supramolecules

The review presents a bird-eye view on the state of research in the field of giant nonbiological discrete metal complexes and ions of nanometer size, which are structurally characterized by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction, using the crystal structure as a common key feature. The discussion is focused on the main structural features of the metal clusters, the clusters containing compact metal oxide/hydroxide/chalcogenide core, ligand-based metal-organic cages, and supramolecules as well as on the aspects related to the packing of the molecules or ions in the crystal and the methodological aspects of the single-crystal neutron and X-ray diffraction of these compounds.

Heterometallic rhodium clusters as electron reservoirs: Chemical, electrochemical, and theoretical studies of the centered-icosahedral [Rh12E(CO)27]n- atomically precise carbonyl compounds

In this paper, we present a comparative study of the redox properties of the icosahedral [Rh₁₂E(CO)₂₇]^n- (n = 4 when E = Ge or Sn and n = 3 when E = Sb or Bi) family of clusters through in situ infrared spectroelectrochemistry experiments and density functional theory computational studies. These clusters show shared characteristics in terms of molecular structure, being all E-centered icosahedral species, and electron counting, possessing 170 valence electrons as predicted by the electron-counting rules, based on the cluster-borane analogy, for compounds with such metal geometry. However, in some cases, clusters of similar nuclearity, and beyond, may show multivalence behavior and may be stable with a different electron counting, at least on the time scale of the electrochemical analyses. The experimental results, confirmed by theoretical calculations, showed a remarkable electron-sponge behavior for [Rh₁₂Ge(CO)₂₇]^4- (1), [Rh₁₂Sb(CO)₂₇]^3- (3), and [Rh₁₂Bi(CO)₂₇]^3- (4), with a cluster charge going from -2 to -6 for 1 and 3 and from -2 to -7 for cluster 4, making them examples of molecular electron reservoirs. The [Rh₁₂Sn(CO)₂₇]^4- (2) derivative, conversely, presents a limited ability to exist in separable reduced cluster species, at least within the experimental conditions, while in the gas phase it appears to be stable both as a penta- and hexa-anion, therefore showing a similar redox activity as its congeners. As a fallout of those studies, during the preparation of [Rh₁₂Sb(CO)₂₇]^3-, we were able to isolate a new species, namely, [Rh₁₁Sb(CO)₂₆]^2-, which presents a Sb-centered nido-icosahedral metal structure possessing 158 cluster valence electrons, in perfect agreement with the polyhedral skeletal electron pair theory.

Metal carbonyl clusters of groups 8-10: synthesis and catalysis

In this review article, we discuss advances in the chemistry of metal carbonyl clusters (MCCs) spanning the last three decades, with an emphasis on the more recent reports and those involving groups 8-10 elements. Synthetic methods have advanced and been refined, leading to higher-nuclearity clusters and a wider array of structures and nuclearities. Our understanding of the electronic structure in MCCs has advanced to a point where molecular chemistry tools and other advanced tools can probe their properties at a level of detail that surpasses that possible with other nanomaterials and solid-state materials. MCCs therefore advance our understanding of structure-property-reactivity correlations in other higher-nuclearity materials. With respect to catalysis, this article focuses only on homogeneous applications, but it includes both thermally and electrochemically driven catalysis. Applications in thermally driven catalysis have found success where the reaction conditions stabilise the compounds toward loss of CO. In more recent years, MCCs, which exhibit delocalised bonding and possess many electron-withdrawing CO ligands, have emerged as very stable and effective for reductive electrocatalysis reactions since reduction often strengthens M-C(O) bonds and since room-temperature reaction conditions are sufficient for driving the electrocatalysis.

Synthesis, Structural Characterization, and DFT Investigations of [MxM'5-xFe4(CO)16]3- (M, M' = Cu, Ag, Au; M ≠ M') 2-D Molecular Alloy Clusters

Miscellaneous 2-D molecular alloy clusters of the type [M_xM'_5-xFe₄(CO)₁₆]^3- (M, M' = Cu, Ag, Au; M ≠ M') have been prepared through the reactions of [Cu₃Fe₃(CO)₁₂]^3-, [Ag₄Fe₄(CO)₁₆]^4- or [M₅Fe₄(CO)₁₆]^3- (M = Cu, Ag) with M'(I) salts (M' = Cu, Ag, Au). Their formation involves a combination of oxidation, condensation, and substitution reactions. The total structures of several [M_xM'_5-xFe₄(CO)₁₆]^3- clusters with different compositions have been determined by means of single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) and their nature in solution elucidated by electron spray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and IR and UV-visible spectroscopy. Substitutional and compositional disorder is present in the solid state structures, and ESI-MS analyses point out that mixtures of isostructural clusters differing by a few M/M' coinage metals are present. SC-XRD studies indicate some site preferences of the coinage metals within the metal cores of these clusters, with Au preferentially in corner sites and Cu in the central site. DFT studies give theoretical support to the experimental structural evidence. The site preference is mainly dictated by the strength of the Fe-M bonds that decreases in the order Fe-Au > Fe-Ag > Fe-Cu, and the preferred structure is the one that maximizes the number of stronger Fe-M interactions. Overall, the molecular nature of these clusters allows their structures to be fully revealed with atomic precision, resulting in the elucidation of the bonding parameters that determine the distribution of the different metals within their metal cores.

Theoretical Analysis of the Mackay Icosahedral Cluster Pd55 (PiPr3 )12 (μ3 -CO)20 : An Open-Shell 20-Electron Superatom

The electronic structure of the spherical Mackay icosahedral nanosized cluster Pd₅₅ (PiPr₃ )₁₂ (μ₃ -CO)₂₀ is analyzed by using DFT calculations. Results reveal that it can be considered as a regular superatom with a "magic" electron count of 20, characterized by a 1S² 1P⁶ 1D¹⁰ 2S² jellium configuration. Its open shell nature is associated with partial occupation of non-jellium, 4d-type, levels located on the interior of the Pd₅₅ kernel. This shows that the superatom model can be used to rationalize the bonding and stability of spherical ligated group 10 clusters, despite their apparent 0-electron count.

Redox active Ni-Pd carbonyl alloy nanoclusters: syntheses, molecular structures and electrochemistry of [Ni22-xPd20+x(CO)48]6- (x = 0.62), [Ni29-xPd6+x(CO)42]6- (x = 0.09) and [Ni29+xPd6-x(CO)42]6- (x = 0.27)

A redox active Ni-Pd alloy nanocluster [Ni_22-xPd_20+x(CO)₄₈]^6- (x = 0.62) ([1]^6-) was obtained from the redox condensation of [NBu₄]₂[Ni₆(CO)₁₂] with 0.7-0.8 equivalents of Pd(Et₂S)₂Cl₂ in CH₂Cl₂. Conversely, [Ni_29-xPd_6+x(CO)₄₂]^6- (x = 0.09) ([2]^6-) and [Ni_29+xPd_6-x(CO)₄₂]^6- (x = 0.27) ([3]^6-) were obtained by employing [NEt₄]₂[Ni₆(CO)₁₂] and 0.6-0.7 equivalents of Pd(Et₂S)₂Cl₂ in CH₃CN. The molecular structures of these high nuclearity Ni-Pd carbonyl clusters were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD). [1]^6- adopted an M₄₀ccp structure comprising five close-packed ABCAB layers capped by two additional Ni atoms. Conversely, [2]^6- and [3]^6- displayed an hcp M₃₅ metal core composed of three compact ABA layers. [1]^6-, [2]^6- and [3]^6- showed nanometric sizes, with the maximum lengths of their metal cores being 1.3 nm ([1]^6-) and 1.0 nm ([2]^6- and [3]^6-), which increased up to 1.9 and 1.5 nm, after including also the CO ligands. Ni-Pd distribution within their metal cores was achieved by avoiding terminal Pd-CO bonding and minimizing Pd-CO coordination. As a consequence, site preference and partial metal segregation were observed, as well as some substitutional and compositional disorders. Electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical studies revealed that [1]^6- and [2]^6- were redox active and displayed four and three stable oxidation states, respectively. Even though several redox active high nuclearity metal carbonyl clusters have been previously reported, the nanoclusters described herein represent the first examples of redox active Ni-Pd carbonyl alloy nanoclusters.

Rh-Sb Nanoclusters: Synthesis, Structure, and Electrochemical Studies of the Atomically Precise [Rh20Sb3(CO)36]3- and [Rh21Sb2(CO)38]5- Carbonyl Compounds

The reactivity of [Rh₇(CO)₁₆]^3– with SbCl₃ has been deeply investigated with the aim of finding a new approach to prepare atomically precise metalloid clusters. In particular, by varying the stoichiometric ratios, the reaction atmosphere (carbon monoxide or nitrogen), the solvent, and by working at room temperature and low pressure, we were able to prepare two large carbonyl clusters of nanometer size, namely, [Rh₂₀Sb₃(CO)₃₆]^3– and [Rh₂₁Sb₂(CO)₃₈]^5–. A third large species composed of 28 metal atoms was isolated, but its exact formulation in terms of metal stoichiometry could not be incontrovertibly confirmed. We also adopted an alternative approach to synthesize nanoclusters, by decomposing the already known [Rh₁₂Sb(CO)₂₇]^3– species with PPh₃, willing to generate unsaturated fragments that could condense to larger species. This strategy resulted in the formation of the lower-nuclearity [Rh₁₀Sb(CO)₂₁PPh₃]^3– heteroleptic cluster instead. All three new compounds were characterized by IR spectroscopy, and their molecular structures were fully established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. These showed a distinct propensity for such clusters to adopt an icosahedral-based geometry. Their characterization was completed by ESI-MS and NMR studies. The electronic properties of the high-yield [Rh₂₁Sb₂(CO)₃₈]^5– cluster were studied through cyclic voltammetry and in situ infrared spectroelectrochemistry, and the obtained results indicate a multivalent nature.

The reactivity of [Rh₇(CO)₁₆]³⁻ with SbCl₃ has been deeply investigated as a new approach to prepare atomically precise metal nanoparticles. By varying the reaction conditions, we obtained three large carbonyl nanoclusters, [Rh₂₀Sb₃(CO)₃₆]³⁻, [Rh₂₁Sb₂(CO)₃₈]⁵⁻, and [Rh_28−xSb_x(CO)₄₄]⁶⁻, and the lower-nuclearity [Rh₁₀Sb(CO)₂₁PPh₃]³⁻ species. They have all been characterized through X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, and other techniques based on their specific nature. Spectroelectrochemical studies on [Rh₂₁Sb₂(CO)₃₈]⁵⁻ unravelled its multivalent nature.

Polymerization Isomerism in [{MFe(CO)4} n] n- (M = Cu, Ag, Au; n = 3, 4) Molecular Clusters Supported by Metallophilic Interactions

Triangular clusters [{MFe(CO)₄}₃]^3- (M = Cu, 4; Ag, 5; Au, 6) were selectively obtained by heating Fe(CO)₄(MIMes)₂ (M = Cu, 1; Ag, 2; Au, 3; IMes = C₃N₂H₂(C₆H₂Me₃)₂). 1-3 were synthesized by reacting Na₂[Fe(CO)₄]·2thf with 2 equiv of M(IMes)Cl. As previously described, the direct reactions of Na₂[Fe(CO)₄]·2thf with one equivalent of M(I) salts resulted in the triangular cluster [{CuFe(CO)₄}₃]^3- for Cu, whereas the square clusters [{MFe(CO)₄}₄]^4- were formed for Ag and Au. Thus, depending on the synthetic protocol adopted, both the triangular [{MFe(CO)₄}₃]^3- and square [{MFe(CO)₄}₄]^4- polymerization isomers can be selectively obtained, at least for Ag and Au. Polymerization isomerism, that is two compounds having the same elemental compositions but different molecular weights, was investigated in [{MFe(CO)₄} _n] ^n- ( n = 3, 4; M = Cu, Ag, Au) by means of structural and theoretical methods and the role of metallophilic interactions was computationally studied by means of the atoms-in-molecules (AIM) approach.

Metal carbonyl cluster-based coordination polymers: diverse syntheses, versatile network structures, and special properties

This highlight surveys recent progress in groups 6–10 metal carbonyl cluster-based coordination polymers, focusing on diverse synthetic strategies, versatile structures, structural transformations, and semiconducting as well as magnetic properties.

Cluster Core Isomerism Induced by Crystal Packing Effects in the [HCo15Pd9C3(CO)38]2- Molecular Nanocluster

This article describes a rare case of cluster core isomerism in a large molecular organometallic nanocluster. In particular, two isomers of the [HCo15Pd9C3(CO)38]2- nanocluster, referred as TP-Pd9 and Oh-Pd9, have been structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography as their [NMe3(CH2Ph)]2[HCo15Pd9C3(CO)38]·CH2Cl2 (ca. 1:1 TP-Pd9 and Oh-Pd9 mixture), [NMe3(CH2Ph)]2[HCo15Pd9C3(CO)38]·2CH2Cl2 (mainly TP-Pd9), [NEt3(CH2Ph)]2[HCo15Pd9C3(CO)38]·CH2Cl2 (mainly TP-Pd9), [MePPh3]2[HCo15Pd9C3(CO)38]·2.5CH2Cl2 (mainly TP-Pd9), and [MePPh3]2[HCo15Pd9C3(CO)38] (Oh-Pd9) salts. The cluster core of TP-Pd9 is a tricapped trigonal prism, whereas this is a tricapped octahedron in Oh-Pd9. The presence in the solid state of the Oh-Pd9 or TP-Pd9 isomers depends on the cation employed and/or the number and type of co-crystallized solvent molecules. Often, mixtures of the two isomers, within the same single crystal or as mixtures of different crystals within the same crystallization batch, are obtained. Structural isomerism in organometallic nanoclusters is discussed and compared to that in Au-thiolate nanoclusters.

Uniaxial magnetic anisotropy energy of bimetallic Co-Ni clusters from a first-principles perspective

Along with the growing precision in the control of matter at increasingly smaller size scales, a field of research, based onto magnetic materials of technical interest, such as bimetallic clusters, has been developed in very recent years. Thereby, here, we report on a complete study of bimetallic clusters composed of cobalt and nickel with up to 7 atoms using ab initio methods in the GGA approach. We applied an unrestricted search method based on the tensor of inertia eigenvalues to find the most stable configurations of the clusters, obtaining a diverse set of structures with different geometric properties. We explored the effect of composition on the structural properties, the chemical stability, the magnetization and the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) of the so-obtained systems. Our results indicate that the behavior of the clusters is mainly governed by the Co-Co interaction and to a lesser extent by the Co-Ni and Ni-Ni interactions. Furthermore, for a given cluster size the magnetic moment increases by 2 μB/Co-substitution plus 1 μB/Ni-substitution coming from the cobalt and nickel core d-states, while in some cases unpaired hybrid s-electrons can also give rise to itinerant magnetism. These features have been analyzed with the help of a Jellium model and have important consequences for the magnetism and the magnetic anisotropy of the clusters. The magnetic behavior and MAE present complex and intriguing landscapes, which suggests the possibility of finely controlling the magnetic states, by tuning the cluster composition, aiming at technical implementation in fields such as molecular magnetism or quantum computation. In particular, cases such as Co6Ni, Co4Ni3, CoNi6 Co2Ni5 and Co3Ni3 present high relative stability and enhanced magnetic moments (around 10 μB), what makes them promising candidates for applications such as subnanometer magnetic information storage.

Synthesis of [Pt12(CO)20(dppm)2]2- and [Pt18(CO)30(dppm)3]2- Heteroleptic Chini-type Platinum Clusters by the Oxidative Oligomerization of [Pt6(CO)12(dppm)]2

The reactions of [Pt₆(CO)₁₂]^2- with CH(PPh₂)₂ (dppm), CH₂═C(PPh₂)₂ (P^P), and Fe(C₅H₄PPh₂)₂ (dppf) proceed via nonredox substitution and result in the heteroleptic Chini-type clusters [Pt₆(CO)₁₀(dppm)]^2-, [Pt₆(CO)₁₀(P^P)]^2-, and [Pt₆(CO)₁₀(dppf)]^2-, respectively. Conversely, the reactions of [Pt₆(CO)₁₂]^2- with Ph₂P(CH₂)₄PPh₂ (dppb) and Ph₂PC≡CPPh₂ (dppa) can be described as redox fragmentation that afford the neutral complexes Pt(dppb)₂, Pt₂(CO)₂(dppa)₃, and Pt₈(CO)₆(PPh₂)₂(C≡CPPh₂)₂(dppa)₂. The oxidation of [Pt₆(CO)₁₀(dppm)]^2- results in its oligomerization to yield the larger heteroleptic Chini-type clusters [Pt₁₂(CO)₂₀(dppm)₂]^2-, [Pt₁₈(CO)₃₀(dppm)₃]^2-, and [Pt₂₄(CO)₄₀(dppm)₄]^2- (for the latter there is only IR spectroscopic evidence). All the clusters were characterized by means of IR and ³¹P NMR spectroscopies and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Moreover, the crystal structures of [NEt₄]₂[Pt₆(CO)₁₀(dppm)]·CH₃CN, [NEt₄]₂[Pt₁₂(CO)₂₀(dppm)₂]·2CH₃CN·2dmf, [NEt₄]₂[Pt₁₂(CO)₂₀(dppm)₂]·4dmf, [NEt₄]₂[Pt₆(CO)₁₀(dppf)]·2CH₃CN, Pt₂(CO)₂(dppa)₃·0.5CH₃CN, Pt₈(CO)₆(PPh₂)₂(C≡CPPh₂)₂(dppa)₂·2thf, and Pt(dppb)₂ were determined by single-crystal diffraction (dmf = dimethylformamide; thf = tetrahydrofuran).

Molecular Nickel Phosphide Carbonyl Nanoclusters: Synthesis, Structure, and Electrochemistry of [Ni11P(CO)18]3- and [H6-nNi31P4(CO)39]n- (n = 4 and 5)

The reaction of [NEt₄]₂[Ni₆(CO)₁₂] in thf with 0.5 equiv of PCl₃ affords the monophosphide [Ni₁₁P(CO)₁₈]^3- that in turn further reacts with PCl₃ resulting in the tetra-phosphide carbonyl cluster [HNi₃₁P₄(CO)₃₉]^5-. Alternatively, the latter can be obtained from the reaction of [NEt₄]₂[Ni₆(CO)₁₂] in thf with 0.8-0.9 equiv of PCl₃. The [HNi₃₁P₄(CO)₃₉]^5- penta-anion is reversibly protonated by strong acids leading to the [H₂Ni₃₁P₄(CO)₃₉]^4- tetra-anion, whereas deprotonation affords the [Ni₃₁P₄(CO)₃₉]^6- hexa-anion. The latter is reduced with Na/naphthalene yielding the [Ni₃₁P₄(CO)₃₉]^7- hepta-anion. In order to shed light on the polyhydride nature and redox behavior of these clusters, electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical studies were carried out on [Ni₁₁P(CO)₁₈]^3-, [HNi₃₁P₄(CO)₃₉]^5-, and [H₂Ni₃₁P₄(CO)₃₉]^4-. The reversible formation of the stable [Ni₁₁P(CO)₁₈]^4- tetra-anion is demonstrated through the spectroelectrochemical investigation of [Ni₁₁P(CO)₁₈]^3-. The redox changes of [HNi₃₁P₄(CO)₃₉]^5- show features of chemical reversibility and the vibrational spectra in the ν_CO region of the nine redox states of the cluster [HNi₃₁P₄(CO)₃₉]^n- (n = 3-11) are reported. The spectroelectrochemical investigation of [H₂Ni₃₁P₄(CO)₃₉]^4- revealed the presence of three chemically reversible reduction processes, and the IR spectra of [H₂Ni₃₁P₄(CO)₃₉]^n- (n = 4-7) have been recorded. The different spectroelectrochemical behavior of [HNi₃₁P₄(CO)₃₉]^5- and [H₂Ni₃₁P₄(CO)₃₉]^4- support their formulations as polyhydrides. Unfortunately, all the attempts to directly confirm their poly hydrido nature by ¹H NMR spectroscopy failed, as previously found for related large metal carbonyl clusters. Thus, the presence and number of hydride ligands have been based on the observed protonation/deprotonation reactions and the spectroelectrochemical experiments. The molecular structures of the new clusters have been determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis. These represent the first examples of structurally characterized molecular nickel carbonyl nanoclusters containing interstitial phosphide atoms.

Interstitial Bismuth Atoms in Icosahedral Rhodium Cages: Syntheses, Characterizations, and Molecular Structures of the [Bi@Rh12(CO)27]3-, [(Bi@Rh12(CO)26)2Bi]5-, [Bi@Rh14(CO)27Bi2]3-, and [Bi@Rh17(CO)33Bi2]4- Carbonyl Clusters

The reaction of [Rh₇(CO)₁₆]^3- with BiCl₃ under N₂ and at room temperature results in the formation of the new heterometallic [Bi@Rh₁₂(CO)₂₇]^3- cluster in high yields. Further controlled addition of BiCl₃ leads first to the formation of the dimeric [(Bi@Rh₁₂(CO)₂₆)₂Bi]^5- and the closo-[Bi@Rh₁₄(CO)₂₇Bi₂]^3- species in low yields, and finally, to the [Bi@Rh₁₇(CO)₃₃Bi₂]^4- cluster. All clusters were spectroscopically characterized by IR and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and their molecular structures were fully determined by X-ray diffraction studies. Notably, they represent the first examples of Bi atoms interstitially lodged in metallic cages that, in this specific case, are all based on an icosahedral geometry. Moreover, [Bi@Rh₁₄(CO)₂₇Bi₂]^3- forms an exceptional network of infinite zigzag chains in the solid state, thanks to intermolecular Bi-Bi distances.

Reactions of Platinum Carbonyl Chini Clusters with Ag(NHC)Cl Complexes: Formation of Acid-Base Lewis Adducts and Heteroleptic Clusters

The reactions of anionic platinum carbonyl Chini clusters [Pt_3n(CO)_6n]^2- [n = 2 (1), 3 (2), 4 (3)] with Ag(IPr)Cl [IPr = C₃N₂H₂(C₆H₃ⁱPr₂)₂] afford the neutral acid-base Lewis adducts [Pt₉(CO)₁₈(AgIPr)₂] (4) and [Pt₆(CO)₁₂(AgIPr)₂] (5). These are thermally transformed into the homometallic heteroleptic neutral cluster [Pt₃(CO)₄(IPr)₂] (6). Alternatively, 6 can be obtained from the reactions of 1-3 with an excess of the free IPr carbene ligand. The formation of 6 is sometimes accompanied by trace amounts of [Pt₄(CO)₄(IPr)₃] (7). The reaction of 6 with free IPr affords the closely related [Pt₃(CO)₃(IPr)₃] (8) heteroleptic cluster by substitution of the unique terminal CO ligand with a third IPr ligand. The reactions of 1-3 with Ag(IMes)Cl [IMes = C₃N₂H₂(C₆H₂Me₃)₂] proceed differently from those involving Ag(IPr)Cl. Indeed, the only product isolated after workup is the bimetallic tetranuclear cluster [Pt₃(CO)₃(IMes)₃(AgCl)] (9). 9 slowly reacts under a CO atmosphere, resulting in the pentanuclear [Pt₅(CO)₇(IMes)₃] (10) complex. All of the new clusters 4-10 have been spectroscopically characterized and their molecular structures determined by X-ray crystallography. 4 and 5 retain the original trigonal-prismatic structures of the parent anionic Chini clusters, which are capped by two [Ag(IPr)]⁺ moieties. Conversely, 6-9 are based on a Pt₃ triangular core decorated by CO and N-heterocyclic carbene ligands as well as Pt(CO) (in the case of 7) and AgCl (9) moieties. 10 displays an edge-bridged tetrahedral geometry.

Effect of ligand on particle size and morphology of nanostructures synthesized by thermal decomposition of coordination compounds

Thermal decomposition of organometallic and various coordination compounds are known as general method to synthesize a wide range of nanostructures including metals, metal oxides and sulfides. Herein, in order to coordinate metals and prepare suitable precursor - due to the efficient role of precursor on the particle size and morphology of products - appropriate ligands will be introduced.

Heteroleptic Chini-Type Platinum Clusters: Synthesis and Characterization of Bis-Phospine Derivatives of [Pt3n(CO)6n]2- (n = 2-4)

The reactions of [Pt_3n(CO)_6n]^2- (n = 2-4) homoleptic Chini-type clusters with stoichiometric amounts of Ph₂PCH₂CH₂PPh₂ (dppe) result in the heteroleptic Chini-type clusters [Pt₆(CO)₁₀(dppe)]^2-, [Pt₉(CO)₁₆(dppe)]^2-, and [Pt₁₂(CO)₂₀(dppe)₂]^2-. Their formation is accompanied by slight amounts of neutral species such as Pt₄(CO)₄(dppe)₂, Pt₆(CO)₆(dppe)₃, and Pt(dppe)₂. A similar behavior was observed with the chiral ligand R-Ph₂PCH(Me)CH₂PPh₂ (R-dppp), and two isomers of [Pt₉(CO)₁₆(R-dppp)]^2- were identified. All the new species were spectroscopically characterized by means of IR and ³¹P NMR, and their structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The results obtained are compared to those previously reported for monodentate phosphines, that is, PPh₃, as well as more rigid bidentate ligands, that is, CH₂═C(PPh₂)₂ (P^P), CH₂(PPh₂)₂ (dppm), and o-C₆H₄(PPh₂)₂ (dppb). From a structural point of view, functionalization of anionic platinum Chini clusters preserves their triangular Pt₃ units, whereas the overall trigonal prismatic structures present in the homoleptic clusters are readily deformed and transformed upon functionalization. Such transformations may be just local deformations, as found in [Pt₉(CO)₁₆(dppe)]^2-, [Pt₉(CO)₁₆(R-dppp)]^2-, [Pt₁₂(CO)₂₂(PPh₃)₂]^2-, and [Pt₉(CO)₁₆(PPh₃)₂]^2-; an inversion of the cage from trigonal prismatic to octahedral, as observed in [Pt₆(CO)₁₀(dppe)]^2- and [Pt₆(CO)₁₀(PPh₃)₂]^2-; the reciprocal rotation of two trigonal prismatic units with the loss of a Pt-Pt contact as found in [Pt₁₂(CO)₂₀(dppe)₂]^2-.
