Metal-containing nanofibers via coordination chemistry

Lewis Acidic Zinc(II) Complexes of Tetradentate Ligands as Building Blocks for Responsive Assembled Supramolecular Structures

This review presents representative examples illustrating how the Lewis acidic character of the Zn(II) metal center in Zn(salen)-type complexes, as well as in complexes of other tetradentate ligands, and the nature of the medium govern their supramolecular aggregation, leading to the formation of a variety of supramolecular structures, either in solution or in the solid state. Stabilization of these Lewis acidic complexes is almost always reached through an axial coordination of a Lewis base, leading to a penta-coordinated square-pyramidal geometry around the metal center. The coverage is not exhaustive, mainly focused on their crystallographic structures, but also on their aggregation and sensing properties in solution, and on their self-assembled and responsive nanostructures, summarizing their salient aspects. The axial ligands can easily be displaced, either in solution or in the solid state, with suitable Lewis bases, thus being responsive supramolecular structures useful for sensing. This contribution represents the first attempt to relate some common features of the chemistry of different families of Zn(II) complexes of tetradentate ligands to their intrinsic Lewis acidic character.

Protonation-induced self-assembly of bis-phenanthroline macrocycles into nanofibers arrayed with tetrachloroaurate, hexachloroplatinate or phosphomolybdate ions

One-dimensional self-assembly of macrocycles is one of the important strategies for constructing fibrous nanomaterials with anisotropic functions such as one-dimensional transport and accumulation of molecules and ions. Herein we report on the synthesis and properties of self-assembled nanofibers using macrocycles to develop a multipurpose template for one-dimensional array of noble metal ions. The nanofibers were prepared by protonation-induced self-assembly of bis-phenanthroline macrocycles, which have enabled the accumulation of some metal-containing anions, such as tetrachloroaurate, hexachloroplatinate and phosphomolybdate. Microscopic observations have demonstrated that the supramolecular nanofibers were reproducibly formed in a similar way, regardless of the structures and charge numbers of the anions. Moreover, the resulting nanofibers, arrayed with several metal ions, were chemically reduced, producing dispersible gold nanoparticles and mixed-valence nanofibers.

On the Aggregation and Sensing Properties of Zinc(II) Schiff-Base Complexes of Salen-Type Ligands

The zinc(II) ion forms stable complexes with a wide variety of ligands, but those related to Schiff-bases are among the most largely investigated. This review deals with the peculiar aggregation characteristics of Zn(II) Schiff-base complexes from tetradentate N2O2 salen-type ligands, L, derivatives from salicylaldehydes and 1,2-diamines, and is mostly focused on their spectroscopic properties in solution. Thanks to their Lewis acidic character, ZnL complexes show interesting structural, nanostructural, and aggregation/deaggregation properties in relation to the absence/presence of a Lewis base. Deaggregation of these complexes is accompanied by relevant changes of their spectroscopic properties that can appropriately be exploited for sensing Lewis bases. Thus, ZnL complexes have been investigated as chromogenic and fluorogenic chemosensors of charged and neutral Lewis bases, including cell imaging, and have shown to be selective and sensitive to the Lewis basicity of the involved species. From these studies emerges that these popular, Lewis acidic bis(salicylaldiminato)Zn(II) Schiff-base complexes represent classical coordination compounds for modern applications.

Crisscrossing coordination networks: ligand doping to control the chemomechanical properties of stimuli-responsive metallogels

Metallogels respond to external stimuli by changing their mechanical properties. To gain a fine control over this phase-shifting event, we have designed and introduced intentional structural mismatches into the otherwise tightly knit metal-organic networks. Built using biphenolate-derived multidirectional/multidentate ligands, these soft materials display markedly different rheological properties depending on the level of "ligand doping", as well as the type of metal ion serving as a key structural support. A zinc metallogel optimized through this process responds to acids, both in the gas stream and liquid phase, by a rapid gel-sol transition and visually discernible colour change.

Supramolecular birefringent metallogels formed by trinuclear copper(ii) complexes with myo-inositol and bipyridyl ligands

Rapid production of cadmium infinite coordination polymer nanofiber via solvent induced precipitation method

The precipitation synthesis of cadmium infinite coordination polymer (Cd-ICP) nanofibers with a high degree of uniformity is reported. The elemental analyses (CHN and ICP-OES), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) show that thermally robust monodisperse solid consists of bi-carboxylic acid linker and cadmium ion. The coordination between the Cd²⁺ ion and bi-carboxylic acid linker was investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The photoluminescence (PL) properties of the Cd-ICP were studied in comparison with those of the bi-carboxylic acid linker. It was shown that the emission intensity of the Cd-ICP is much stronger than linker due to the structural rigidity after the coordination of linker to Cd ions. The field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) results show that after calcination of the Cd-ICP the morphology changed from fiber to hexagonal-like disc. Furthermore, the results of UV-Vis spectroscopy show larger band gap for obtained CdO relative to the bulk counterpart.

Facile synthesis of MOF-derived Mn2O3 hollow microspheres as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries

In this article, we report a facile and scalable route for the fabrication of Mn₂O₃ hollow microspheres by direct pyrolysis of Mn-based metal–organic frameworks at 450 °C with a heating rate of 10 °C min⁻¹ in air.

Strategies to create hierarchical self-assembled structures via cooperative non-covalent interactions

Cooperative phenomena are common processes involved in the hierarchical self-assembly of multiple systems in nature, such as the tobacco mosaic virus and a cell's cytoskeleton. Motivated by the high degree of order exhibited by these systems, a great deal of effort has been devoted in the past two decades to design hierarchical supramolecular polymers by combining different classes of cooperative interactions. In this review, we have classified the field of supramolecular polymers depending on the cooperative non-covalent forces driving their formation, with particular emphasis on recent examples from literature. We believe that this overview would help scientists in the field to design novel self-assembled systems with improved complexity and functionalities.

Temperature dependent coordinating self-assembly

Self-assemblies dominated by coordination interaction are hardly responsive to thermal stimuli. We show that in case the coordinating mode changes with temperature, the resultant assemblies also exhibit temperature dependence. The self-assemblies are constructed with perylene tetracarboxylate and metal ions. Compounds containing a perylene skeleton often self-assemble into micro-belts, which is also true for the combination of perylene tetracarboxylate and metal ions. However, a unique pinecone structure was observed upon increasing the temperature of the coordinating system. The structural transition is triggered by the change of coordinating mode between the carboxylate group and the metal ion. At low temperature, intermolecular coordination occurs which favours the growth of the coordinating self-assembly along the long axis of the perylene. However, upon the elevation of temperature, the coordination is overwhelmed by intra-molecular mode. This is against the extension of the coordinating assembly due to the loss of connection between neighbouring perylenes. As a result, the pinecone structure is observed. We expect that the cases introduced in this work may inspire the design of structurally controllable temperature-dependent soft materials based on coordinating self-assembly.

Self-assembly of functional molecules into 1D crystalline nanostructures

Self-assembled functional nanoarchitectures are employed as important nanoscale building blocks for advanced materials and smart miniature devices to fulfill the increasing needs of high materials usage efficiency, low energy consumption, and high-performance devices. One-dimensional (1D) crystalline nanostructures, especially molecule-composed crystalline nanostructures, attract significant attention due to their fascinating infusion structure and functionality which enables the easy tailoring of organic molecules with excellent carrier mobility and crystal stability. In this review, we discuss the recent progress of 1D crystalline self-assembled nanostructures of functional molecules, which include both a small molecule-derived and a polymer-based crystalline nanostructure. The basic principles of the molecular structure design and the process engineering of 1D crystalline nanostructures are also discussed. The molecular building blocks, self-assembly structures, and their applications in optical, electrical, and photoelectrical devices are overviewed and we give a brief outlook on crucial issues that need to be addressed in future research endeavors.

Gd–Si oxide mesoporous nanoparticles with pre-formed morphology prepared from a Prussian blue analogue template

Self-assembled nanostructures of amphiphilic zinc(II) salophen complexes: role of the solvent on their structure and morphology

This contribution explores the effect of several solvent properties, such as volatility, polarity, and Lewis basicity on the formation of molecular self-assembled nanostructures in the solid state, obtained either by casting of related solutions or by complete solvent evaporation, using seven solvents representative of common classes of coordinating organic solvents, of an amphiphilic Zn(II) Schiff-base complex. In all cases, the existence of well-defined X-ray diffraction patterns, for both the cast and powder samples, indicates a strong tendency towards the molecular self-assembly of such complexes. While nanostructures formed in acetone, THF, pyridine, and DMF have a lamellar organization, those formed in ACN, ethanol, and DMSO exhibit a 2D columnar square structure. Field emission scanning electron microscopy analysis indicates that nanostructures formed in volatile acetone, THF, ACN, and ethanol solvents show a fibrous morphology, while those formed in less volatile pyridine, DMF, and DMSO have a ribbon appearance. Overall, the results indicate that while the formation of such nanostructures is independent of the Lewis basicity of the solvent, the solvent polarity affects their structure - more polar solvents favour higher symmetry structures - and the solvent volatility influences their morphology and ordering in the cast films - lower volatility of the solvent parallels the formation of much more ordered structures. Therefore, the appropriate choice of solvent allows control of the structure, morphology, and ordering of these molecular assemblies.
