High-nuclearity cobalt coordination clusters: Synthetic, topological and magnetic aspects

Synthesis, polymorphism, and shape complementarity-induced co-crystallization of hexanuclear Co(II) clusters capped by a flexible heteroligand shell

Polymorphism and co-crystallization have gradually gained attention as new tools in the development of modern crystalline functional materials. However, the study on the selective self-assembly of metal clusters into multicomponent crystals is still in its infancy. Herein, we present the synthesis and characterization of two new heteroleptic hydroxido-acetato and acetato Co(II) clusters [Co6(OH)2(OAc)4(pyret)6] (1) and [Co6(OAc)6(pyret)6] (2) incorporating auxiliary 2-pyrrolidinoethoxylate (pyret) ligands. On this occasion, we revealed that the commonly used thermal procedure for dehydration of cobalt(II) acetate leads to a reagent comprising substantial contamination by cobalt hydroxido moieties. Comprehensive structural analysis of new compounds demonstrated intriguing crystal structure diversity of hydroxido-acetato cluster 1, which represents a rare example of both conformational and packing polymorphism in one compound, originating from the flexibility of organic O,N-ligands in the secondary coordination sphere. Furthermore, both clusters exhibit an interesting propensity for the selective formation of co-crystals 1·2 driven mainly by van der Waals forces and specific shape complementarity between co-formers.

Heptanuclear Mixed-Valence Co4IIICo3II Molecular Wheel─A Molecular Analogue of Layered Double Hydroxides with Single-Molecule Magnet Behavior and Electrocatalytic Activity for Hydrogen Evolution Reactions

We present a bifunctional heptanuclear cobalt(II)/cobalt(III) molecular complex formulated as [Co7(μ3-OH)4(H2L1)2(HL2)2](NO3)6·6H2O (1) (where H5L1 is 2,2'-(((1E,1'E)-((2-hydroxy-5-methyl-1,3-phenylene)bis(methanylylidene))bis(azanylylidene))bis(propane-1,3-diol)) and H2L2 is 2-amino-1,3-propanediol). Compound 1 has been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis along with other spectral and magnetic measurements. Structural analysis indicates that 1 contains a mixed-valence Co7 cluster where a central Co(II) ion is connected to six different Co centers (four CoIII and two CoII ions) by four μ3-OH groups, giving rise to a planar heptanuclear cluster that resembles a molecular fragment of a layered double hydroxide (LDH). Two triply deprotonated (H2L1)3- ligands form the outer side of the cluster while two singly deprotonated (HL2)- ligands are located at the top and bottom of the central heptanuclear core. Variable temperature magnetic measurements indicate the presence of weak ferromagnetic CoII···CoII interactions (J = 3.53(6) cm-1) within the linear trinuclear CoII cluster. AC susceptibility measurements show that 1 is a field-induced single-molecule magnet (SMM) with τ0 = 8.2(7) × 10-7 s and Ueff = 11.3(4) K. The electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity of 1 in homogeneous phase shows an overpotential of 455 mV, with a Faradaic efficiency of 81% and a TOF of 8.97 × 104 μmol H2 h-1 mol-1.

A tetracobalt(II) cluster with a two vertex truncated dicubane topology endogenously supported by carboxylate-based (2-pyridyl)methylamine ligands: magneto-structural and DFT studies

A reaction between CoCl2 and L3-(CO2-)2 (2 : 1 stoichiometry) in CH3OH affords a discrete complex [CoII4-{L3-(CO2-)2}2(μ3-OCH3)2(CH3OH)2(H2O)2Cl2] (1) [L3-(CO2-)2 = 3-[N-{2-(pyridin-2-yl)methyl}amino]-bis(propionate)]. The structure of 1 reveals two terminal mononuclear CoII{L3-(CO2-)2}Cl units connected by a dimeric CoII2(μ3-OCH3)2(CH3OH)2(H2O) unit present in the centre through two methoxo (μ3-OCH3)- and two carboxylate (μ-1,1-OCO-) bridges affording a tetranuclear coordination cluster of Co(II) with a defective dicubane topology. In 1, Co1 (terminal) has distorted octahedral CoIIN2O3Cl and the central Co2 has CoIIO6 coordination. Such coordination arrangements afford the observed topology. Variable-temperature magnetic studies reveal anti-ferromagnetic coupling in 1. Three magnetic exchange interactions (one anti-ferromagnetic and two ferromagnetic: J1 = +3.3 cm-1 (Co⋯Co 3.176 Å; μ-1,1-OCO- and μ3-OCH3 bridges), J2 = -2.5 cm-1 (Co⋯Co 3.228 Å; μ-1-OCO- and μ3-OCH3 bridges) and J3 = +10.6 cm-1 (Co⋯Co 3.084 Å; two μ3-OCH3 bridges)) have been identified, with the inclusion of the orbital reduction parameter (α = Aκ = 1.38), spin-orbit coupling (λ = -158 cm-1) and axial distortion (energy gap Δ = -975 cm-1 between singlet and doublet levels), rationalized by density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Accurate binding of porous aluminum molecular ring catalysts with the substrate

Metal molecular rings are a class of compounds with aesthetically pleasing symmetry and fundamentally useful properties. The reported work generally focuses on the ring center cavity, and there is little known about those on the ring waist. Herein, we report the discovery of porous aluminum molecular rings and their performance and contribution to the cyanosilylation reaction. We develop a facile ligand induced aggregation and solvent regulation strategy towards AlOC-58NC and AlOC-59NT with high purity, high yield (75% and 70%, respectively) and gram-level scale-up. These molecular rings exhibit a "two-tier" pore feature involving the general central cavity and newly observed equatorial semi-open cavities. AlOC-59NT with two types of one-dimensional channels showed good catalytic activity. The interaction of the aluminum molecular ring catalyst with the substrate has been crystallographically characterized and theoretically confirmed, showing a ring adaptability process that involves the capture and binding of the substrate. This work provides new ideas for the assembly of porous metal molecular rings and to understand the overall reaction pathway involving aldehydes and is expected to inspire the design of low-cost catalysts through structural modifications.

A dinuclear Co(iii)/Co(ii) complex based on the H2pmide ligand showing field-induced SMM behaviour

We report a combined computational and experimental study of the field-induced SMM behaviour of a Co(ii)/Co(iii) dinuclear complex with a pair-like H-bond intermolecular interaction.

Novel Co5 and Ni4 Metal Complexes and Ferromagnets by the Combination of 2-Pyridyl Oximes with Polycarboxylic Ligands

The use of 2-pyridyl oximes in metal complexes chemistry has been extensively investigated in the last few decades as a fruitful source of species with interesting magnetic properties. In this work, the initial combination of pyridine-2-amidoxime (pyaoxH₂) and 2-methyl pyridyl ketoxime (mpkoH) with isonicotinic acid (HINA) and 3,5-pyrazole dicarboxylic acid (H₃pdc) has provided access to three new compounds, [Ni₄(INA)₂(pyaox)₂(pyaoxH)₂(DMF)₂] (1), [Co₅(mpko)₆(mpkoH)₂(OMe)₂(H₂O)](ClO₄)₆ (2), and [Co₅(OH)(Hpdc)₅(H₂pdc)] (3). 1 displays a square-planar metal topology, being the first example that bears simultaneously HINA and pyaoxH₂ in their neutral or ionic form. The neighbouring Ni₄ units in 1 are held together through strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions, forming a three-dimensional supramolecular framework. 2 and 3 are mixed-valent Co₄^IIICo^II and Co₂^IIICo^II₃ compounds with a bowtie and trigonal bipyramidal metal topology, accordingly. Direct current and alternate current magnetic susceptibility studies revealed that the exchange interactions between the Ni^II ions in 1 are ferromagnetic (J = 1.79(4) cm⁻¹), while 2 exhibits weak AC signals in the presence of a magnetic field. The syntheses, crystal structures, and magnetic properties of 1–3 are discussed in detail.

Gd(OH)F2: A Promising Cryogenic Magnetic Refrigerant

Magnetic refrigerants with a large magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in a wide temperature range and low magnetic ordering temperature (T_o) in the sub-kelvin temperature region are not only crucial for adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration but also open up a broader parameter space for the optimal design of adiabatic demagnetization refrigerators. However, such magnetic refrigerants are extremely rare because they require magnetic materials to simultaneously satisfy three conditions: low T_o, weak magnetic interaction, and high magnetic density. Here, we report the syntheses, heat capacities, and magnetic properties of Gd(OH)_3-xF_x (1: x = 1, 2: x ≈ 1.5, and 3: x = 2), demonstrating for the first time that the introduction of fluoride anions into antiferromagnetic Gd(OH)₃ can effectively regulate its T_o. Significantly, 3 not only has a T_o of 0.5 K but also exhibits a large MCE in the temperature range from 0.5 to 4 K, representing the best magnetic refrigerant reported to date in the temperature range of 0.5-4 K from the viewpoint of the MCE.

Cyclodextrin-Templated Co(II) Grids: Symmetry Control over Supramolecular Topology and Magnetic Properties

While inherent complexation properties and propensity for self-organization of cyclodextrins (CDs) render them potentially promising scaffolds of magnetic materials, this research area is still at an embryonic stage. We report on the synthesis and structure characterization of a new sandwich-type complex, [(α-CD)₂Co₃Li₆(H₂O)₉] (α-1), which represents a smaller analogue of the previously characterized [(γ-CD)₂Co₄Li₈(H₂O)₁₂] (γ-1) cluster. A comprehensive structural analysis of α-1 and a careful reinvestigation of γ-1 reveal how the symmetry of CD ligands determines the molecular composition and supramolecular arrangements of Co/Li sandwich-type complexes. Furthermore, the first comparative studies of the magnetic properties in this type of system point to subtle differences in the magnetic behavior of both compounds. The sandwich-type complexes α-1 and γ-1 exhibit field-induced slow magnetic relaxation, defining a new family of magnetic materials with a pillared grid-like supramolecular structure composed of weakly interacting Co^II centers forming an SMM.

Furthermore, the first comparative studies of the magnetic properties in this type of system point to subtle differences in the magnetic behavior of both compounds.

Influence of reaction temperature and stoichiometry on the coordination mode of a multidentate pyridylpyrazole ligand in Co(ii) complexes: from a 0D mononuclear structure to 3D frameworks

Three Co(ii) coordination polymers with different dimensionality have been successfully constructed under controlled conditions by changing the reaction temperature and stoichiometry.

Slow Magnetic Relaxation in {[CoCxAPy)] 2.15 H2O}n MOF Built from Ladder-Structured 2D Layers with Dimeric SMM Rungs

We present the magnetic properties of the metal-organic framework {[CoCxAPy]·2.15 H2O}n (Cx = bis(carboxypropyl)tetramethyldisiloxane; APy = 4,4`-azopyridine) (1) that builds up from the stacking of 2D coordination polymers. The 2D-coordination polymer in the bc plane is formed by the adjacent bonding of [CoCxAPy] 1D two-leg ladders with Co dimer rungs, running parallel to the c-axis. The crystal packing of 2D layers shows the presence of infinite channels running along the c crystallographic axis, which accommodate the disordered solvate molecules. The Co(II) is six-coordinated in a distorted octahedral geometry, where the equatorial plane is occupied by four carboxylate oxygen atoms. Two nitrogen atoms from APy ligands are coordinated in apical positions. The single-ion magnetic anisotropy has been determined by low temperature EPR and magnetization measurements on an isostructural compound {[Zn0.8Co0.2CxAPy]·1.5 CH3OH}n (2). The results show that the Co(II) ion has orthorhombic anisotropy with the hard-axis direction in the C2V main axis, lying the easy axis in the distorted octahedron equatorial plane, as predicted by the ab initio calculations of the g-tensor. Magnetic and heat capacity properties at very low temperatures are rationalized within a S* = 1/2 magnetic dimer model with anisotropic antiferromagnetic interaction. The magnetic dimer exhibits slow relaxation of the magnetization (SMM) below 6 K in applied field, with a tlf ≈ 2 s direct process at low frequencies, and an Orbach process at higher frequencies with U/kB = 6.7 ± 0.5 K. This compound represents a singular SMM MOF built-up of Co-dimers with an anisotropic exchange interaction.

Cu6- and Cu8-Cage Sil- and Germsesquioxanes: Synthetic and Structural Features, Oxidative Rearrangements, and Catalytic Activity

This study reports intriguing features in the self-assembly of cage copper(II) silsesquioxanes in the presence of air. Despite the wide variation of solvates used, a series of prismatic hexanuclear Cu₆ cages (1-5) were assembled under mild conditions. In turn, syntheses at higher temperatures are accompanied by side reactions, leading to the oxidation of solvates (methanol, 1-butanol, and tetrahydrofuran). The oxidized solvent derivatives then specifically participate in the formation of copper silsesquioxane cages, allowing the isolation of several unusual Cu₈-based (6 and 7) and Cu₆-based (8) complexes. When 1,4-dioxane was applied as a reaction medium, deep rearrangements occurred (with a total elimination of silsesquioxane ligands), causing the formation of mononuclear copper(II) compounds bearing oxidized dioxane fragments (9 and 11) or a formate-driven 1D coordination polymer (10). Finally, a "directed" self-assembly of sil- and germsesquioxanes from copper acetate (or formate) resulted in the corresponding acetate (or formate) containing Cu₆ cages (12 and 13) that were isolated in high yields. The structures of all of the products 1-13 were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, mainly based on the use of synchrotron radiation. Moreover, the catalytic activity of compounds 12 and 13 was evaluated toward the mild homogeneous oxidation of C₅-C₈ cycloalkanes with hydrogen peroxide to form a mixture of the corresponding cyclic alcohols and ketones.

A Mixed Valence CoIICoIII2 Field-Supported Single Molecule Magnet: Solvent-Dependent Structural Variation

One-pot reaction of the Schiff base N,N’-ethylene bis(salicylaldimine) (H₂L), CoCl₂.6H₂O, and [Ph₂SnCl₂] in acetone produces the mixed valence Co^IICo^III₂ compound [Co^IICo^III₂(μ-L)₂(Ph)₂(μ-Cl)₂]·(CH₃)₂CO·H₂O (1). Our recent study already revealed that the same reaction mixtures in methanol or ethanol produced a heterometallic Sn^IVCo^III (2) or monometallic Co^III complex (3), respectively. Comparison of these organometallic systems shows that the 2,1-intermetallic Ph shift occurs in any of those solvents, but their relevant structural features (mononuclear, dinuclear-heterometallic, and trinuclear mixed valence) are solvent dependent. Geometrical structural rotation is also discussed among the related organometallic Co^IICo^III₂ systems. The AC magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that 1 is a single molecule magnet (SMM), exhibiting a field-induced slow magnetic relaxation with two modes. The relaxation time for the low-frequency channel is as slow as τ~0.6 s at T = 2.0 K and B_DC = 1.0 T.

Hierarchical Construction and Magnetic Difference of {Co12M12} (M = Co2+/Cd2+) Aggregates from {Co14} Cluster-Based Precursors in the Presence of Homo/Heterometal Salts

The controllable construction and function expansion of some sophisticated aggregations represent a current hot topic in scientific research. In this paper, using a prefabricated {Co₁₄} cluster as a synthetic precursor, a homometallic {Co₂₄} and a heterometallic {Co₁₂Cd₁₂} giant cluster possessing similar dual-[M₁₂] (M = Co/Cd) skeletons was prepared by reacting the precursor with excess CoCl₂ and Cd(OAc)₂ salts, respectively. The detailed structural information on {Co₂₄} and {Co₁₂Cd₁₂} was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and further analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy in the solid state. Compared to the {Co₁₄} precursor, magnetic difference revealed that spin-canting and magnetic ordering had been enhanced in {Co₂₄} and suppressed in {Co₁₂Cd₁₂} when dotted with diamagnetic Cd²⁺ ions.

Anisotropic exchange interaction and field-induced SMM behaviour in a mixed valence {CoCo} complex

We are reporting the synthesis and structural characterization of a new hexanuclear Co(ii)/Co(iii) complex starting from a versatile pivalate cobalt precursor and the racemic mixture of a chelating Schiff base type ligand. The main [CoII4CoIII2(μ3-OH)2(μ-OR)2(μ-OR')2(μ-OR'')2]6+ core is unprecedented and exhibits an inversion center that affords only two unique Co(ii) sites. We performed DC and AC magnetic measurements and analysed them in terms of the anisotropic exchange of ground Kramers doublets at each Co(ii) site due to their unquenched angular orbital contribution to the magnetic moment. Quantum computations support the experimental data treatment. The interplay of dominant antiferromagnetic exchange, inversion symmetry and a non-collinear main quantization axis affords an exchange energy spectrum with mostly non-magnetic states. Nevertheless, field induced SMM behaviour is observed at 1500 Oe and below 3 K which might be explained by the relaxation of the first excited magnetic state (which is populated enough) through the next closest excited state. The Orbach and/or Raman mechanism could be operative from the experimental and quantum computed results.

The interesting luminescence behavior and rare nonlinear optical properties of the {Ag55Mo6} nanocluster

The reversible thermochromic luminescence and rare third-order NLO properties of the {Ag55Mo6} nanocluster reported were studied experimentally, and the contributions of Ag+, CC− and MoO42− groups to NLO properties were proved by DFT calculations.

New members of the polynuclear manganese family: MnMn single-molecule magnets and MnMn antiferromagnetic complexes. Synthesis and magnetostructural correlations

The synthesis, crystal structures and magnetic properties are reported for three novel mixed-valence tetranuclear [MnII2MnIII2(HBuDea)2(BuDea)2(EBA)4] (1), [MnII2MnIII2(HBuDea)2(BuDea)2(DMBA)4] (2) and undecanuclear [MnII3MnIII8O4(OH)2(BuDea)6(DMBA)8] (3) clusters, where H2BuDea is N-butyldiethanolamine, HEBA is 2-ethylbutyric acid and HDMBA is 2,2-dimethylbutyric acid. The compounds have been prepared through self-assembly reactions of manganese(ii) chloride with H2BuDea and respective carboxylic acid in methanol solution in air, affording 1 with HEBA, and 2 or 3 with HDMBA, depending on the experimental conditions. The single crystal X-ray analysis reveals that 1 and 2 have similar centrosymmetric structures based on the {M4(μ3-O)2(μ-O)4} core, while 3 discloses the unprecedented {M11(μ-O)4(μ3-O)12} one. The Mn4 complexes display single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior with a S = 9 spin ground state and a high energy barrier Ueff/kB of up to 51 K. The magnetic properties of 2 are successfully modeled with JMnIII-MnIII/hc = 25.7 cm-1 and two JMnIII-MnII/hc constants of 3.1 and -0.93 cm-1 (data correspond to the Ĥ = -Jŝ1·ŝ2 formalism). The Mn11 cluster exhibits a paramagnetic behavior with dominant antiferromagnetic coupling. A possible influence of intermolecular effects and of different peripheries of the magnetic cores designed by using 2-ethylbutyrate (in 1) or 2,2-dimethylbutyrate (in 2) on the magnetic properties of 1 and 2 is discussed. The experimental magnetostructural correlations for the {MnII2MnIII2(μ3-O)2(μ-O)4} cores, supported by broken symmetry DFT calculations, disclose the X-MnIIIMnIII angle and MnIII-O distance (where MnIII-X and MnIII-O are axial Jahn-Teller bonds) as the structural factors having the strongest influence on JMnIII-MnIII exchange coupling. It is shown that two JMnIII-MnII constants are necessary for the correct description of magnetic exchange couplings in the {MnII2MnIII2(μ3-O)2(μ-O)4} tetranuclear unit.

New Highly Charged Iron(III) Metal-Organic Cube Stabilized by a Bulky Amine

In this work, we report a new octanuclear cluster based on Fe^III and the ligand 1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid, [Et₃NH]₁₂[Fe₈(IDC)₁₂]·10DMF·13H₂O (1), with a metal core containing eight Fe^III connected by only one type of organic ligand. A peak at 573 m/z in the mass spectra of the compound suggests the adduct species {[Fe₈(IDC)₁₂]+8H}^4-. By X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the oxidation state of the iron cation was confirmed to be 3+, also identifying the presence of a quaternary nitrogen species, which act as a countercation of the anionic metal core [Fe₈(IDC)₁₂]^12-. Mössbauer spectra recorded at different temperatures show an isomer shift and quadrupole splitting parameters that confirm the existence of only Fe^III-HS in the structure of 1. X-ray analysis reveals that compound 1 crystallizes in the orthorhombic system space group Ibam, confirming a molecular cluster structure with an almost regular cube as geometry, with the Fe^III atoms located at the corners of the cube and connected by μ-1κ² N,O:2κ² N',O‴-IDC^3- bridges. Additionally, the magnetic measurements reveal a weak antiferromagnetic coupling in the Fe₈ ^III coordination cluster (J = -3.8 cm^-1). To the best of our knowledge, 1 is the first member of the family of cubes assembled with 1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid and Fe^III cation, exhibiting high pH stability over a broad pH range, making it an ideal candidate for the design of supramolecular structures and metal-organic frameworks.

Structural characterization and magnetic property studies of a mixed-valence {CoIIICo} complex with a μ4-oxo tetrahedral {Co} motif

We have synthesized and structurally characterized a new mixed valence pentanuclear Co complex, bearing a rare μ4-O-tetrahedral CoII4 unit, by employing a pyridine-like Schiff base ligand. We have performed DC magnetic susceptibility and magnetization measurements over polycrystalline samples and chemical quantum computations in order to understand the exchange interaction pattern within Co(ii) sites and ground state magnetic anisotropy. This new complex shows an overall antiferromagnetic exchange interaction whose strength strongly depends on the local symmetry of Co(ii) sites. Also, local ion magnetic anisotropy reveals a strongly axial behaviour with the lowest Kramers doublet (KD) at each Co(ii) ion sufficiently isolated from excited states at low temperatures. Two Co(ii) sites show tetrahedral symmetry and the spin only formalism including axial zero-field splitting (ZFS) term properly described them; on the other hand, the other two Co(ii) sites have distorted octahedral and square base pyramidal coordination spheres, and a strong orbital contribution leads to a failure of the spin only formalism. A model of four Seff = 1/2 exchange interacting sites is necessary in order to account for low temperature magnetization behaviour. In view of the strongly anisotropic KD states, the exchange interactions are forced to be modelled as anisotropic ones. Overall, experimental data and quantum chemical computations are in good agreement, supporting the proposed model for magnetic behaviour.

Tetrahedral μ4-chloride and in situ generated octahedral μ6-sulfide templating Co8 complexes with different distortions of the cube

Herein two unprecedented octanuclear Co8 clusters are presented, [Cl@Co8 (TEOA)4(CH3CN)Cl3] (1) and [S@Co8(DEOA)6(NCS)2] (2) (H3TEOA = triethanolamine, H2DEOA = diethanolamine), in which tetrahedral μ4-chloride and in situ generated octahedral μ6-sulfide are used as templates. In spite of them being derivatives of cubes, eight Co atoms in 1 consist of two co-centered tetrahedra of different sizes, whereas in 2 they appear as a rhombohedron formed via elongating a cube along the C3-axis direction. Strong intra-cluster antiferromagnetic interactions were found.

Solvent-Induced Structural Diversity and Magnetic Research of Two Cobalt(II) Complexes

The solvent-induced topological and structural diversities of two Co(II) complexes, namely, [Co(L)₂(SCN)₂] (Co1) and [Co₂(L)₂(SCN)(OAc)₃] (Co2) (L = 8-methoxyquinoline), were comparatively analyzed. Certain proportions of L, Co(OAc)₂·4H₂O, and NaSCN were mixed and dissolved in CH₃OH at 60 °C to obtain complex Co1. Complex Co2, an asymmetric dinuclear compound, was obtained by simply replacing CH₃OH with CH₃CN as the solvent. The Co(II) ion in complex Co1 was coordinated by the N₄O₂ mode provided by two L ligands and two SCN^- anions. The two Co(II) ions in Co2 were in the N₂O₄ and NO₅ coordination environment and were linked by two μ₂-OAc^- bridges and one rare μ₃-OAc^- bridge. Weak interaction analysis revealed that complexes Co1 and Co2 exhibited 6-connected shp and 14-connected fcu nets, respectively. Magnetic studies showed that Co1 demonstrated single-ion magnet behavior under 2000 Oe. These behaviors are indicative of clearly field-induced single-ion magnetic behavior with U _eff = 34.7(2) K and τ₀ = 2.7(2) × 10^-7 s under 2000 Oe dc field, respectively. By contrast, Co2 lacked frequency dependence under zero-field conditions. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry indicated that two complexes were stable in N,N-dimethylformamide.

Phosphonate Decomposition-Induced Polyoxomolybdate Dumbbell-Type Cluster Formation: Structural Analysis, Proton Conduction, and Catalytic Sulfoxide Reduction

The reaction of MoO₄^2- with a number of phosphonic acids [bis(phosphonomethyl)glycine, R,S-hydroxyphosphonoacetic acid, 1-hydroxyethane-1,1-diphosphonic acid, phenylphosphonic acid, aminotris(methylene phosphonic acid), and 1,2-ethylenediphosphonic acid] under oxidizing (H₂O₂) hydrothermal conditions at low pH leads to rupture of the P-C bond, release of orthophosphate ions, and generation of the octanuclear, phosphate-bridged, polyoxometalate molybdenum cluster (NH₄)₅[Mo₈(OH)₂O₂₄(μ₈-PO₄)](H₂O)₂ (POMPhos). This cluster has been fully characterized and its structure determined. It was studied as a proton conductor, giving moderate values of σ = 2.13 × 10^-5 S·cm^-1 (25 °C) and 1.17 × 10^-4 S·cm^-1 (80 °C) at 95% relative humidity, with E_a = 0.27 eV. The POMPhos cluster was then thermally treated at 310 °C, yielding (NH₄)_2.6(H₃O)_0.4(PO₄Mo₁₂O₃₆) together with an amorphous impurity containing phosphate and molybdenum oxide. This product was also studied for its proton conductivity properties, giving rise to an impressively high value of σ = 2.43 × 10^-3 S·cm^-1 (25 °C) and 6.67 × 10^-3 S·cm^-1 (80 °C) at 95% relative humidity, 2 orders of magnitude higher than those corresponding to the "as-synthesized" solid. The utilization of POMPhos in catalytic reduction of different sulfoxides was also evaluated. POMPhos acts as an efficient homogeneous catalyst for the reduction of diphenyl sulfoxide to diphenyl sulfide, as a model reaction. Pinacol was used as a low-cost, environmentally friendly, and highly efficient reducing agent. The effects of different reaction parameters were investigated, namely the type of solvent and reducing agent, presence of acid promoter, reaction time and temperature, loading of catalyst and pinacol, allowing to achieve up to 84-99% yields of sulfide products under optimized conditions. Substrate scope was tested on the examples of diaryl, alkylaryl, dibenzyl, and dialkyl sulfoxides and excellent product yields were obtained.

New Cu4Na4- and Cu5-Based Phenylsilsesquioxanes. Synthesis via Complexation with 1,10-Phenanthroline, Structures and High Catalytic Activity in Alkane Oxidations with Peroxides in Acetonitrile

Self-assembly of copper(II)phenylsilsesquioxane assisted by the use of 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) results in isolation of two unusual cage-like compounds: (PhSiO1,5)12(CuO)4(NaO0.5)4(phen)4 1 and (PhSiO1,5)6(PhSiO1,5)7(HO0.5)2(CuO)5(O0.25)2(phen)3 2. X-Ray diffraction study revealed extraordinaire molecular architectures of both products. Namely, complex 1 includes single cyclic (PhSiO1,5)12 silsesquioxane ligand. Four sodium ions of 1 are additionally ligated by 1,10-phenanthrolines. In turn, “sodium-less” complex 2 represents coordination of 1,10-phenanthrolines to copper ions. Two silsesquioxane ligands of 2 are: (i) noncondensed cubane of a rare Si6-type and (ii) unprecedented Si7-based ligand including two HOSiO1.5 fragments. These silanol units were formed due to removal of phenyl groups from silicon atoms, observed in mild conditions. The presence of phenanthroline ligands in products 1 and 2 favored the π–π stacking interactions between neighboring cages. Noticeable that in the case of 1 all four phenanthrolines participated in such supramolecular organization, unlike to complex 2 where one of the three phenanthrolines is not “supramolecularly active”. Complexes 1 and 2 were found to be very efficient precatalysts in oxidations with hydroperoxides. A new method for the determination of the participation of hydroxyl radicals has been developed.

Synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of copper(ii) azide

A novel azide-bridged copper compound without an auxiliary ligand has been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal diffraction analysis. The compound consists of 1D double chains with end-on (EO) azide bridges. Furthermore, the neighboring chains are connected by weak coordination bonds, which leads to the formation of a 3D architecture. Low-temperature magnetic measurements reveal that antiferromagnetic interactions are dominant, with concomitant spin-canted antiferromagnetism.

A Chiral and Polar Single-Molecule Magnet: Synthesis, Structure, and Tracking of Its Formation Using Mass Spectrometry

The solvothermal reaction of cobalt(II) sulfate with S, S-1,2- bis(1-methyl-1 H-benzo[ d]imidazol-2-yl)ethane-1,2-diol, (H₂L), neutralized with triethylamine (Et₃N) in a mixture of methanol and water (2:1), resulted in triangular red crystals of [Co^II₇(L)₃(SO₄)₃(OH)₂(H₂O)₉]·4H₂O·3CH₃OH (Co₇). It is formed of chiral and polar clusters crystallizing in the R₃ space group. Co₇ consists of apex-shared asymmetric dicubane units where all of the metals adopt an octahedral coordination and the three ligands wrap diagonally around the unit. One end of the cluster is bonded by six water molecules and the other end by three monodentate sulfates. The head-to-tail packing through extended H-bonds leads to polar chains. The ligand has lost two protons, adopts a cis-conformation, and is coordinated to five metals around the waist of the dicubane. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) of solutions of the reaction as a function of time reveals the possible step-by-step assembly process of the cluster: the initial product [Co^II(HL)(SO₄)]^2- combines with CoSO₄, forming [Co^II₂(HL)(SO₄)₂]^2-, and then, upon addition of Et₃N, dimerizes through a [OH]^- bridge to [Co^II₄(HL)₂(OH)(CH₃OH)₂(SO₄)₃]^- followed by capture of one Co²⁺ and one CoSO₄ to form [Co^II₆(L)₂(OH)(CH₃O)(SO₄)₄]^2- before eventually binding to CoL to form [Co^II₇(L)₃(OH)₂(SO₄)₄]^2-. These results allow us to propose a possible process for the formation of Co₇, which is a good example for chiral multidentate chelating ligand-controlled assembly of clusters. Magnetization measurements as a function of the temperature, field, and ac-frequency reveal ferromagnetic coupled moments and single-molecule magnetism (SMM).

Thiacalixarene-Supported Irregular Co26 and Ni28 High-Nuclearity Clusters with Pyridyl-Diphosphonates: Strategies to Create Active Metal Sites and Fabricate Multicomponent Materials

Two new irregularity high-nuclearity clusters [Co₂₆(TC4A)₆(HL)₄Cl₄(HCOO)₄(CH₃O)₂(OH)₂(DMF)₁₀(H₂O)₅] (+ solvent) (Co₂₆) and [Ni₂₈(TC4A)₆(HL)₆(PO₄)₂(μ₃-O)₂Cl₂(CH₃OH)₁₄(H₂O)₂(DMF)₈][(CH₃NH₂CH₃)₄] (+ solvent) (Ni₂₈) have been solvothermally synthesized by p- tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene (H₄TC4A), transition metals (CoCl₂·6H₂O/NiCl₂·6H₂O), and 1-hydroxy-2-(3-pyridinyl)ethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (H₅L). The clusters were structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, PXRD, TGA, and FT-IR spectrum and Raman spectrum. Co₂₆ features a rodlike Co₂₆ core constructed by six Co₄-TC4A secondary building units (SBUs) and four HL^4- with two extra cobalt ions. Ni₂₈ cluster represents a flowerlike Ni₂₈ core built from six Ni₄-TC4A SBUs, six HL^4-, and four additional nickel ions. The multidentate risedronic acid displaying various new coordination mode bonds with SBUs to assemble two nanoclusters that enable high density possible coordinatively unsaturated metal sites (PCUMSs). Co₂₆ and Ni₂₈ clusters can be directly dispersed on carbon paper (CP) and showed extraordinary oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity due to the larger exposed liable coordination active metal sites. The thermodecomposition of both nanoclusters at different temperatures afforded serial multicomponent complexes.

Single-chain magnets assembled in cobalt(ii) metal–organic frameworks

This feature article discusses the advantages, progress and prospects of constructing single-chain magnets in metal–organic frameworks.

Merohedral icosahedral M48 (M = CoII, NiII) cage clusters supported by thiacalix[4]arene

Cage clusters are a discrete chemically and topologically diverse family of molecule-based functional materials. Presented here are two isostructural M48 (M = CoII for LSHU01, NiII for LSHU02) cage clusters with a merohedral icosahedral cage structure featuring 12 M4-TC4A (H4TC4A, p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene) second building units as vertices and 18 asymmetric 5-(1H-tetrazol-1-yl)isophthalate ligands as faces. They are the highest-nuclearity cage compounds of CoII and NiII. The activated Co48 cage exhibited high selectivity in the sorption of C3H8 over CH4 under ambient conditions. Frequency response experiments indicated that the extrinsic voids and matrix interface of the activated crystalline samples are primarily responsible for the observed gas adsorption performance.

Cobalt complexes of the chelating dicarboxylate ligand "esp": a paddlewheel-type dimer and a heptanuclear coordination cluster

The coordination chemistry of Co(ii) with the chelating dicarboxylate ligand esp (esp = α,α,α',α'-tetramethyl-1,3-benzenedipropionate) is explored. We report here the bimetallic paddlewheel-type dimer, Co2(esp)2(EtOH)2 (1), and a bowl-shaped, heptanuclear coordination cluster, Co7(OH)4(Hesp)2(esp)4(MeCN)2·4MeCN (2). Crystal structures of both complexes are reported as well as their magnetic properties, which indicate antiferromagnetic interactions among the Co(ii) ions.

Coordination Clusters of 3d-Metals That Behave as Single-Molecule Magnets (SMMs): Synthetic Routes and Strategies

The area of 3d-metal coordination clusters that behave as Single-Molecule Magnets (SMMs) is now quite mature within the interdisciplinary field of Molecular Magnetism. This area has created a renaissance in Inorganic Chemistry. From the synthetic Inorganic Chemistry viewpoint, the early years of "try and see" exercises (1993-2000) have been followed by the development of strategies and strict approaches. Our review will first summarize the early synthetic efforts and routes for the preparation of polynuclear 3d-metal SMMs, and it will be then concentrated on the description of the existing strategies. The former involve the combination of appropriate 3d-metal-containing starting materials (simple salts with inorganic anions, metal cardoxylates, and pre-formed carboxylate clusters, metal phosphonates) and one or two primary organic ligands; the importance of the end-on azido group as a ferromagnetic coupler in 3d-metal SMM chemistry will be discussed. The utility of comproportionation reactions and the reductive aggregation route for the construction of manganese SMMs will also be described. Most of the existing strategies for the synthesis of SMMs concern manganese. These involve substitution of carboxylate ligands in pre-formed SMMs by other carboxylate or non-carboxylate groups, reduction procedures for the {Mn 8 III Mn 4 IV } SMMs, spin "tweaking," "switching on" SMM properties upon conversion of low-spin clusters into high-spin ones, ground-state spin switching and enhancing SMM properties via targeted structural distortions, the use of radical bridging ligands and supramolecular approaches. A very useful strategy is also the "switching on" of SMM behavior through replacement of bridging hydroxide groups by end-on azido or isocyanato ligands in clusters. Selected examples will be mentioned and critically discussed. Particular emphasis will be given on the criteria for the choice of ligands.

Dynamic Motion of Organic Ligands in Polar Layered Cobalt Phosphonates

By introducing the polar methoxy group into phenyl- or benzyl-phosphonate ligands, four cobalt phosphonates with layered structures are obtained, namely, [Co(4-mopp)(H₂ O)] (1), [Co(4-mobp)(H₂ O)] (2), [Co(3-mopp)(H₂ O)] (3), and [Co(3-mobp)(H₂ O)] (4), where 4- or 3-moppH₂ is (4- or 3-methoxyphenyl)phosphonic acid and 4- or 3-mobpH₂ is (4- or 3-methoxybenzyl)phosphonic acid. Compounds 1, 2, and 4 crystallize in the polar space groups Pmn2₁ or Pna2₁ , whereas compound 3 crystallizes in the centrosymmetric space group P2₁ /n. The layer topologies in the four structures are similar and can be viewed as perovskite type, where the edge-sharing [Co₄ O₄ ] rhombi are capped by the PO₃ C groups. The phenyl and MeO groups in compounds 1-3 are heavily disordered, whereas that in 4 is ordered. Structural comparison based on the data at 296 and 123 K reveals distinct dynamic motion of the organic groups in compounds 1 and 2. The fluctuation of the polar MeO groups in these two compounds is confirmed by dielectric relaxation measurements. In contrast, the fluctuation of polar groups in compounds 3 and 4 is not evident. Interestingly, the dehydrated samples of 3 and 4 (i.e., 3-de and 4-de) exhibit one-step and two-step phase transitions associated with the motion of polar organic groups, as proven by DSC and dielectric measurements. The magnetic properties of compounds 1-4 are investigated, and strong antiferromagnetic interactions are found to mediate between the magnetic centers through μ-O(P) and O-P-O bridges.

Assembly of thiacalix[4]arene-supported high-nuclearity Cd24 cluster with enhanced photocatalytic activity

A high-nuclearity nanoscale Cd24 cluster has been hydrothermally synthesized by assembly of Cd4-TC4A (H4TC4A = p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene) second building units (SBUs) and in situ generated peroxy(mono)phosphate PO53- groups and peroxyphenoxide groups of TC4A. The cluster was structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffractions. Photocatalytic studies revealed that the highest nuclearity Cd,S-co-rich Cd24 cluster exhibits enhanced photocatalytic water splitting activities compared to the sandwich Cd4(TC4A)2 (Cd4) cluster under the same conditions in the absence of a co-catalyst. The nanostructure of Cd24 incorporated both peroxyphosphate and peroxyphenoxide groups, which increased the metal coordination numbers to give more labile Cd-O/S bonds and is believed to be the key feature that enables the significant photocatalytic water splitting activities.

MnIII-FeIII Heterometallic Compounds within Hydrogen-Bonded Supramolecular Networks Promoted by an [Fe(CN)5(CNH)]2- Building Block: Structural and Magnetic Properties

The reaction of [Fe(CN)₆]^3- and [Mn(acacen)]⁺ (H₂acacen = N, N'-bis(acetylacetone)ethylenediamine) building units in the presence of supramolecular cations, [(F-Anil)(18-crown-6)]⁺ (F-Anil⁺ = 3-fluoroanilinium) or [(Me-F-Anil)(18-crown-6)]⁺ (Me-F-Anil⁺ = 3-fluoro-4-methylanilinium), affords two new bimetallic compounds, [(F-Anil)(18-crown-6)][Mn(acacen)Fe(CN)₅(CNH)]·MeOH (1) and [(Me-F-Anil)(18-crown-6)][Mn(acacen)(MeOH)Fe(CN)₅(CNH)]·MeOH (2), respectively. Compound 1 exhibits a one-dimensional topology, while compound 2 is a dinuclear discrete system due to the coordination of a MeOH molecule at the axial position of the [Mn(acacen)]^- unit. For both systems, the acidity of the corresponding supramolecular cation triggers the protonation of the Fe^III moiety as [Fe(CN)₅(CNH)]^2-. Moreover, the resulting -CNH ligand induces hydrogen bonding interactions connecting the chains for 1 or the molecules for 2 into higher dimensional supramolecular networks. Magnetic properties of compounds incorporating these [Fe(CN)₅(CNH)]^2- building blocks were, for the first time, thoroughly investigated, indicating a three-dimensional antiferromagnetic order of single-chain magnets for 1 and an antiferromagnetically interacting S = 3/2 spin ground state for 2.
