Abstract
The widespread use of nuclear energy has raised concerns about nuclear safety and radioactive waste management, particularly due to the release of radioactive cesium. This study investigates the use of t-BAMBP (4-tert-butyl-2-(α-methylbenzyl) phenol) for the extraction and separation of cesium from simulate high concentration cesium containing wastewater, focusing on the selection of suitable diluents to enhance the efficiency of the process. We performed a systematic study using density functional theory (DFT) calculations to evaluate the intrinsic properties and interactions of various common diluents with t-BAMBP. The diluents studied include aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene, xylene), alkanes (cyclohexane, hexane, heptane), and alcohols (hexanol, octanol). Our computational results revealed that cyclohexane is the most suitable diluent due to its moderate solvation-free energy, high nonpolarity, and optimal balance between solubility and reactivity. Experimental validation confirmed the computational findings. The cyclohexane-diluted t-BAMBP system achieved the highest cesium extraction efficiency of over 94 %, with a separation factor (βCs/K) of 767.67. Cyclohexane demonstrated the lowest toxicity and cost among the diluents evaluated, making it a safer and more economical choice for practical applications. The results of this study provide a comprehensive theoretical and experimental basis for the selection of diluents in the t-BAMBP extraction system, offering insights for the sustainable utilization of cesium resources and effective management of radioactive waste.

Decorating Channel Walls in Metal-Organic Frameworks with Crown Ethers for Efficient and Selective Separation of Radioactive Strontium(II). Angew Chem Int Ed Engl 2023; 62:e202312894. Abstract
Nuclear accidents and the improper disposal of nuclear wastes have led to serious environmental radioactive pollutions. The rational design of adsorbents for the highly efficient separation of strontium(II) is essential in treating nuclear waste and recovering radioactive strontium resources. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are potential materials for the separation of aqueous metal ions owing to their designable structure and tunable functionality. Herein, a novel 3D MOF material MOF-18Cr6, in which 1D channels are formed using 18-crown-6-ether-containing ligands as channel walls, is fabricated for strontium(II) separation. In contrast to traditional MOFs designed by grafting functional groups in the framework pores, MOF-18Cr6 possesses regular 18-crown-6-ether cavities on the channel walls, which not only can transport and intake strontium(II) via the channels, but also prevent blockage of the channels after the binding of strontium(II). Consequently, the functional sites are fully utilized to achieve a high strontium(II) removal rate of 99.73 % in simulated nuclear wastewater. This study fabricates a highly promising adsorbent for the separation of aqueous radioactive strontium(II), and more importantly, can provide a new strategy for the rational design of high-performance MOF adsorbents for separating target substances from complex aqueous environments.

Abstract
A unique Pd-catalyzed approach for asymmetric (4+1) annulations via cascade allylation and transient σ-alkyl-Pd(II) initiated methylene Csp3 -H activation is reported. The enolate fragment derived from the decarboxylation of vinyl methylene carbonate is crucial to stabilize the key intermediate. These reactions enable the synthesis of various useful dihydrobenzofurans with excellent enantioselectivity, typically >95 : 5 er, and exclusive (Z)-stereoselectivity. Compared with the well-established annulations via Heck-type C-H activations, this protocol showcases a conceptually new way to generate σ-alkyl-Pd(II) species that could initiate challenging asymmetric Csp3 -H activations.

Abstract
Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) have been developed for use in a variety of diagnosis and analysis fields. However, conventional μPADs with an open-channel system have limitations for application as analytical platforms mainly because of the evaporation and contamination of the sample solution. This study demonstrates the design and fabrication of an enclosed three-dimensional(3D)-μPAD and its application as a primary early analysis platform for ionic contaminants. To generate the hydrophobic PDMS barrier, double-sided patterning is carried out using a PDMS blade-coated stamp mold that is fabricated using 3D printing. The selective PDMS patterning can be achieved with controlled PDMS permeation of the cellulose substrate using 3D-designed stamp molds. We find the optimal conditions enabling the formation of enclosed channels, including round shape pattern and inter-pattern distance of 10 mm of stamp design, contact time of 0.5 min, and spacer height of 300 µm of double-sided patterning procedure. As a proof of concept, this enclosed 3D-μPAD is used for the simultaneous colorimetric detection of heavy metal ions in a concentration range of 0.1-2000 ppm, including nickel (Ni2+), copper (Cu2+), mercury (Hg2+), and radioactive isotope cesium-137 ions (Cs+). We confirm that qualitative analysis and image-based quantitative analysis with high reliability are possible through rapid color changes within 3 min. The limits of detection (LOD) for 0.55 ppm of Ni2+, 5.05 ppm of Cu2+, 0.188 ppm of Hg2+, and 0.016 ppm of Cs+ are observed, respectively. In addition, we confirm that the analysis is highly reliable in a wide range of ion concentrations with CV values below 3% for Ni2+ (0.56%), Cu2+ (0.45%), Hg2+ (1.35%), and Cs+ (2.18%). This method could be a promising technique to develop a 3D-μPAD with various applications as a primary early analysis device in the environmental and biological industries.

Abstract
In this study, we have undertaken the development of two fluorescent sensors based on calixarene compounds for the purpose of detecting cesium in water. By introducing the sulfonate functional groups, we have considerably improved the water solubility of sensors, enabling complete dissolution of products in aqueous media and direct analysis of polluted water samples. Through rigorous experiments, we have demonstrated that the complexation of Cs+ ions with sensors 1 and 2 in water leads to a remarkable enhancement of fluorescence. This fluorescence enhancement serves as a reliable indication of cesium presence and allows for sensitive detection. To further advance the practical application of our sensors, we have successfully integrated calixarene sensors 1 and 2 into a microfluidic sensor chip. This integration has enabled real-time, on-line measurements and has resulted in the development of a portable detection device capable of detecting cesium ions in water samples at parts per billion (ppb) levels. This device holds great promise for environmental monitoring and assessment, providing a convenient and efficient solution for cesium detection. Our work represents a significant advancement in the field of cesium detection, displaying the efficacy of calixarene-based fluorescent sensors and their integration into microfluidic systems. The enhanced water solubility, fluorescence response, and portability of our detection device offers tremendous potential for applications in environmental monitoring, water quality assessment, and emergency response scenarios where rapid and accurate cesium detection is crucial.

Abstract
Carbon-carbon bond formation, condensation or click chemistry reactions were used to synthesize novel bowl-shaped sumanene-ferrocene conjugates, along with the extended π-electron framework in good yields. For the first time, the present study uses sumanene derivatives tris-substituted at the benzylic positions as the materials to begin the study on the click chemistry or the metal-catalyzed coupling reactions, Suzuki-Miyaura or Sonogashira couplings. The synthesized conjugates exhibited the property of selective recognizing cesium cations. As a result, this led to the development of highly sensitive and selective fluorescent or electrochemical sensors dedicated to the recognition of cesium cations (Cs+) in water. We successfully designed the Cs+ electrochemical sensors, which exhibited an acceptable limit of detection (LOD) values at 0.05-0.38 μM. Spectrofluorimetry, voltammetry, and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) were used to perform the selectivity studies. The results revealed that the designed sensors are highly Cs+-selective. This work significantly contributes to the design of new methods of sumanene modification. It also provides further information on the electrochemical properties and innovative applications of metallocene-tethered sumanene derivatives.

Abstract
The feasibility of detecting a trace concentration of multivalent ions based on the ionic current rectification (ICR) of a nanopore when impurity ions might present is assessed. Adopting a bullet-shaped nanopore surface modified with tannic acid as an example, the detection of trace concentrations of Cu2+ (target ion) when Fe3+ (impurity) is present with K+ as background ions under various conditions is simulated. In particular, the influence of the reaction order of the association of target ions and tannic acid on the nanopore performance is examined. We show that the lower the background concentration the better the detection performance. For the examined background concentrations of 1, 10, 100, and 1000 mM, the optimal detection ranges are [0.5, 1000 μM] and [1, 1000 nM] for Cu2+ and Fe3+, respectively. The detection limits, 0.5 μM for Cu2+ and 1 nM for Fe3+, are lower than those that can be obtained from conventional instruments, suggesting the potential of applying the present nanopore-based approach. In addition, we also consider the presence of multiple ions, which can occur, for example, in detecting Cu2+ (target ion) when Fe3+ (impurity) might present or vice versa with K+ as background ions. The competitive adsorption of these three kinds of ions can yield complicated ICR behaviors.

Abstract
Public anxiety and concern from cesium pollution in oceans have been back on the agenda since tons of nuclear waste water were announced to be poured into oceans. Cesium ion can easily enter organisms and bioaccumulate in animals and plants, thus its harm is chronic to humans through food chains. Here we showed a kind of hybrid ionic liquid membrane (HILM) for detection of cesium ion in seawater through CsPbBr3 perovskite fluorescence. With sustainability in mind, HILM was built frugally. The lowest cost of HILM is below 3 cents per piece. The HILM can detect cesium ion quickly with eye-readable fluorescence signal. Ultracheap, portable, easy-to-use on-site detection device could offer benefit for personal security and applications in environment science and ecology in the future decades.

Abstract
Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) synthesized from biological sources play a significant role in biomedical and environmental applications, including bioimaging, biosensing, metal ions detection and electrocatalytic oxidations. Herein, we synthesized blue-emitting carbon quantum dots using maple tree leaves via a one-step hydrothermal process to detect Cesium ions selectively. The synthesized CQDs' functional group composition, morphology, and pH stability was analytical and morphologically investigated. The maple leaves derived carbon quantum dots (M-CQDs) exhibited blue fluorescence, and their sizes ranged from 1 to 10 nm. They exhibited emission at 445 nm upon excitation at 360 nm. M-CQDs PL intensity was highly stable for about 100 d without any changes and confirmed that the as-prepared CQDs could be used as a probe for Cesium ion sensing. M-CQDs were effectively used as Cesium sensing probes based on the electron transfer process and simultaneously used as a catalyst for glycerol electrooxidation. The PL intensity of M-CQDs was quenched while adding the varies concentration of Cesium ions in the linear range from 100 μM to 100 nM with the detection limit of (LOD) 160 nM, simultaneously electrocatalytic oxidation of glycerol showed an onset potential of 1.32 V at a current density of 10 mA/cm2.

Abstract
This study focuses on the self-assembly of a new flavin compound and its scaffolding function for a Cs+ ion. 7,8-Dimethyl-10-[4'-(methoxycarbonyl)phenyl]-isoalloxazine (FlH-MB) displays self-assembly in a DMSO solution and has strong dependence on the solvent. In the DMSO solution, both the resulting scaffold and the deprotonation of FlH-MB were demonstrated to induce complex formation with a Cs+ ion, which was investigated by UV-vis, 1H NMR, and fluorescence titrations. This complex formation involves both Coulombic and cation-π interactions through the Fl- site in an Fl--MB dimer.

Abstract
Upon mixing of aqueous solutions of the freely soluble building blocks cucurbit[7]uril (Q[7]) and 4-sulfocalix[4]arene (SC[4]A), white microcrystals instantly separate in near-quantitative yield. The driving force for this assembly is suggested to be the outer-surface interaction of the Q[n]. Dynamic light scattering, scanning electron microscopy, and NMR (diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy) analyses have confirmed the supramolecular aggregation of Q[7] and SC[4]A. Titration 1H NMR spectroscopy and isothermal titration calorimetry have shown that the interaction ratio of Q[7] and SC[4]A is close to 3:1. Moreover, the Q[7]/SC[4]A-based supramolecular assembly can accommodate molecules of some volatile compounds or luminescent dyes. Thus, this work offers a simple and highly efficient means of preparing adsorbent or solid fluorescent materials.

Abstract
We demonstrate experimentally and theoretically a nanofluidic device for the selective recognition of the cesium ion by exploiting host-guest interactions inside confined geometry. For this purpose, a host molecule, i.e., the amine-terminated p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene-crown (t-BuC[4]C-NH2), is successfully synthesized and functionalized on the surface of a single conical nanopore fabricated in a poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) membrane through carbodiimide coupling chemistry. On exposure to the cesium cation, the t-BuC[4]C-Cs+ complex is formed through host-guest interaction, leading to the generation of positive fixed charges on the pore surface. The asymmetrical distribution of these groups along the conical nanopore leads to the electrical rectification observed in the current-voltage (I-V) curve. On the contrary, other alkali cations are not able to induce any significant change in the rectification characteristics of the nanopore. The success of the chemical modification is monitored from the changes in the electrical readout of the nanopore. Theoretical results based on the Nernst-Planck and Poisson equations further demonstrate the validity of the experimental approach to the cesium-induced ionic conduction of the nanopore.

Abstract
The metal-organic framework (MOF) complex (H3 O)2 [Zn4 (ur)(Hfdc)2 (fdc)4 ] (1, ur=urotropine, H2 fdc=furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid) incorporates cryptand-like cavities, which can be used to separate and detect Rb+ and Cs+ optically. This is the first example of the effective employment of a MOF material for optical detection of these cations.
