More hydra than Janus – Non-classical coordination modes in complexes of oligopyridine ligands

Cyclometalated and NNN Terpyridine Ruthenium Photocatalysts and Their Cytotoxic Activity

The cyclometalated terpyridine complexes [Ru(η2-OAc)(NC-tpy)(PP)] (PP = dppb 1, (R,R)-Skewphos 4, (S,S)-Skewphos 5) are easily obtained from the acetate derivatives [Ru(η2-OAc)2(PP)] (PP = dppb, (R,R)-Skewphos 2, (S,S)-Skewphos 3) and tpy in methanol by elimination of AcOH. The precursors 2, 3 are prepared from [Ru(η2-OAc)2(PPh3)2] and Skewphos in cyclohexane. Conversely, the NNN complexes [Ru(η1-OAc)(NNN-tpy)(PP)]OAc (PP = (R,R)-Skewphos 6, (S,S)-Skewphos 7) are synthesized in a one pot reaction from [Ru(η2-OAc)2(PPh3)2], PP and tpy in methanol. The neutral NC-tpy 1, 4, 5 and cationic NNN-tpy 6, 7 complexes catalyze the transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone (S/C = 1000) in 2-propanol with NaOiPr under light irradiation at 30 °C. Formation of (S)-1-phenylethanol has been observed with 4, 6 in a MeOH/iPrOH mixture, whereas the R-enantiomer is obtained with 5, 7 (50-52% ee). The tpy complexes show cytotoxic activity against the anaplastic thyroid cancer 8505C and SW1736 cell lines (ED50 = 0.31-8.53 µM), with the cationic 7 displaying an ED50 of 0.31 µM, four times lower compared to the enantiomer 6.

A Peptoid-Chelator Selective to Cu2+ That Can Extract Copper from Metallothionein-2 and Lead to the Production of ROS

Copper is an essential metal ion that is involved in critical cellular processes, but which can also exhibit toxic effects through its ability to catalyze reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation. Dysregulation of copper homeostasis has been implicated in the progression of several diseases, including cancer. A novel therapeutic approach, extensively studied in recent years, is to capitalize on the increased copper uptake and dependency exhibited by cancer cells and to promote copper-associated ROS production within the tumor microenvironment, leading to the apoptosis of cancer cells. Such an effect can be achieved by selectively chelating copper from copper-bearing metalloproteins in cancer cells, thereby forming a copper-chelator complex that produces ROS and, through this, induces oxidative stress and initiates apoptosis. Herein, we describe a peptoid chelator, TB, that is highly suitable to carry this task. Peptoids are N-substituted glycine oligomers that can be efficiently synthesized on a solid support and are also biocompatible; thus, they are considered promising drug candidates. We show, by rigorous spectroscopic techniques, that TB is not only selective for Cu(II) ions, but can also effectively extract copper from metallothionein-2, and the formed complex CuTB can promote ROS production. Our findings present a promising first example for the future development of peptoid-based chelators for applications in anti-cancer chelation therapy, highlighting the potential for the prospect of peptoid chelators as therapeutics.

The First Cu(I)-Peptoid Complex: Enabling Metal Ion Stability and Selectivity via Backbone Helicity

Stabilization of Cu(I) is ubiquitous within native copper proteins. Understanding how to stabilize Cu(I) within synthetic biomimetic systems is therefore desired towards biological applications. Peptoids are an important class of peptodomimetics, that can bind metal ions and stabilize them in their high oxidation state. Thus, to date, they were not used for Cu(I) binding. Here we show how the helical peptoid hexamer, having two 2,2'-bipyridine (Bipy) groups that face the same side of the helix, forms the intramolecular air stable Cu(I) complex. Further study of the binding site by rigorous spectroscopic techniques suggests that Cu(I) is tetracoordinated, binding to only three N atoms from the Bipy ligands and to the N-terminus of the peptoid's backbone. A set of control peptoids and experiments indicates that the Cu(I) stability and selectivity are dictated by the intramolecular binding, forced by the helicity of the peptoid, which can be defined as the second coordination sphere of the metal center.

Expanded Ligands Based upon Iron(II) Coordination Compounds of Asymmetrical Bis(terpyridine) Domains

The synthesis and characterization of two tritopic ligands containing a 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (tpy) metal binding domain and either a 3,2':6',3″- or a 4,2':6',4″-tpy domain are detailed. The synthetic routes to these ligands involved the [Pd(dppf)Cl₂]-catalyzed coupling of a boronic ester-functionalized 2,2':6',2″-tpy with bromo-derivatives of 3,2':6',3″-tpy or 4,2':6',4″-tpy. The 2,2':6',2″-tpy domains of the tritopic ligands preferentially bind Fe²⁺ in reactions with iron(II) salts leading to the formation of two homoleptic iron(II) complexes containing two peripheral 3,2':6',3″-tpy or 4,2':6',4″-tpy metal-binding sites, respectively. These iron(II) complexes are potentially tetratopic ligands and represent expanded versions of tetra(pyridin-4-yl)pyrazine.

Stars and stripes: hexatopic tris(3,2':6',3''-terpyridine) ligands that unexpectedly form one-dimensional coordination polymers

The hexatopic ligands 1,3,5-tris(4,2':6',4''-terpyridin-4'-yl)benzene (1), 1,3,5-tris(3,2':6',3''-terpyridin-4'-yl)benzene (2), 1,3,5-tris{4-(4,2':6',4''-terpyridin-4'-yl)phenyl}benzene (3), 1,3,5-tris{4-(3,2':6',3''-terpyridin-4'-yl)phenyl}benzene (4) and 1,3,5-trimethyl-2,4,6-tris{4-(3,2':6',3''-terpyridin-4'-yl)phenyl}benzene (5) have been prepared and characterized. The single crystal structure of 1·1.75DMF was determined; 1 exhibits a propeller-shaped geometry with each of the three 4,2':6',4''-tpy domains being crystallographically independent. Packing of molecules of 1 is dominated by face-to-face π-stacking interactions which is consistent with the low solubility of 1 in common organic solvents. Reaction of 5 with [Cu(hfacac)2]·H2O (Hhfacac = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoropentane-2,4-dione) under conditions of crystal growth by layering resulted in the formation of [Cu3(hfacac)6(5)] n ·2.8nC7H8·0.4nCHCl3. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals an unusual 1D-coordination polymer consisting of a series of alternating single and double loops. Each of the three crystallographically independent Cu atoms is octahedrally sited with cis-arrangements two N-donors from two different ligands 1 and, therefore, cis-arrangements of coordinated [hfacac]- ligands; this observation is unusual among compounds in the Cambridge Structural Database containing {Cu(hfacac)2N2} coordination units in which the two N-donors are in a non-chelating ligand.

Stoichiometrically Controlled Assembly of Lanthanide Molecular Complexes of the Heteroditopic Divergent Ligand 4'-(4-Pyridyl)-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine N-Oxide in Hypodentate or Bridging Coordination Modes. Structural, Magnetic, and Photoluminescence Studies

Mononuclear rare-earth tris-β-diketonato complexes RE(tta)₃dme [RE = Y (1), La (2), Dy (3), or Eu (4); Htta = 2-thenoylacetone; dme = 1,2-dimethoxyethane] react cleanly at room temperature in a 1:1 molar ratio with the heteroditopic divergent ligand 4'-(4-pyridyl)-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine N-oxide (pyterpyNO) to yield RE₂(tta)₆(pyterpyNO)_n, where n = 2 for RE = Y (5), Dy (6), or Eu (7) and n = 3 for RE = La (8). The crystal structure of 5 revealed a dinuclear compound with two pyterpyNO's bridging through the oxygen atom in a hypodentate mode leaving the terpyridine moieties uncoordinated. Using a metal:pyterpyNO molar ratio of 2 for RE = Y (9), Dy (10), or Eu (11), it was possible to isolate the molecular complexes RE₄(tta)₁₂(pyterpyNO)₂, while using a 5:3 molar ratio, the product La₅(tta)₁₂(pyterpyNO)₃ (12) can be obtained. ⁸⁹Y nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy revealed two different yttrium centers at room temperature for 9. An X-ray diffraction study of 10 showed a symmetrical tetranuclear structure resulting from the coordination of two Dy(tta)₃ fragments to the two hypodentate terpyridines of the dinuclear unit and presenting two different coordination sites for metals with coordination numbers of 8 and 9. Magnetic studies of 6 and 10 revealed the presence of an antiferromagnetic interaction between the two Dy(III) atoms bound by the NO bridges. These compounds displayed a slow relaxing magnetization through Orbach (6) and Raman (10) processes in the absence of an applied magnetic field; the rate increased upon application of a 1 kOe field. 7 and 11 showed a bright red emission typical of Eu³⁺. The two complexes have similar emission properties mainly determined by the employed β-diketonato ligands.

Can 2-Pyridyl-1,2,3-triazole "Click" Ligands be Used to Develop Cu(I)/Cu(II) Molecular Switches?

Molecular switching processes are important in a range of areas including the development of molecular machines. While there are numerous organic switching systems available, there are far less examples that exploit inorganic materials. The most common inorganic switching system remains the copper(I)/copper(II) switch developed by Sauvage and co-workers over 20 years ago. Herein, we examine if bidentate 2-(1-benzyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)pyridine (pytri) and tridentate 2,6-bis[(4-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)methyl]pyridine (tripy) moieties can be used to replace the more commonly exploited polypyridyl ligands 2,2'-bypyridine (bpy)/1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and 2,2';6',2″-terpyridine (terpy) in a copper(I)/(II) switching system. Two new ditopic ligands that feature bidentate (pytri, L1 or bpytri, L2) and tridentate tripy metal binding pockets were synthesized and used to generate a family of heteroleptic copper(I) and copper(II) 6,6'-dimesityl-2,2'-bipyridine (diMesbpy) complexes. Additionally, we synthesized a series of model copper(I) and copper(II) diMesbpy complexes. A combination of techniques including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and UV-vis spectroscopies, high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and X-ray crystallography was used to examine the behavior of the compounds. It was found that L1 and L2 formed [(diMesbpy)Cu(L1 or L2)]²⁺ complexes where the copper(II) diMesbpy unit was coordinated exclusively in the tridenate tripy binding site. However, when the ligands (L1 and L2) were complexed with copper(I) diMesbpy units, a complex mixture was obtained. NMR and MS data indicated that a 1:1 stoichiometry of [Cu(diMesbpy)]⁺ and either L1 or L2 generated three complexes in solution, the dimetallic [(diMesbpy)₂Cu₂(L1 or L2)]²⁺ and the monometallic [(diMesbpy)Cu(L1 or L2)]⁺ isomers where the [Cu(diMesbpy)]⁺ unit is coordinated to either the bidentate or tridentate tripy binding sites of the ditopic ligands. The dimetallic [(diMesbpy)₂Cu₂(L1 or L2)](PF₆)₂ complexes were structurally characterized using X-ray crystallography. Both complexes feature a [Cu(diMesbpy)]⁺ coordinated to the bidentate (pytri or bpytri) pocket of the ditopic ligands (L1 or L2), as expected. They also feature a second [Cu(diMesbpy)]⁺ coordinated to the nominally tridentate tripy binding site in a four-coordinate hypodentate κ²-fashion. Competition experiments with model complexes showed that the binding strength of the bidentate pytri is similar to that of the κ²-tripy ligand, leading to the lack of selectivity. The results suggest that the pytri/tripy and bpytri/tripy ligand pairs cannot be used as replacements for the more common bpy/phen-terpy partners due to the lack of selectivity in the copper(I) state.

Isomers of Terpyridine as Ligands in Coordination Polymers and Networks Containing Zinc(II) and Cadmium(II)

The use of divergent 4,2′:6′,4″- and 3,2′:6′,3″-terpyridine ligands as linkers and/or nodes in extended coordination assemblies has gained in popularity over the last decade. However, there is also a range of coordination polymers which feature 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine metal-binding domains. Of the remaining 45 isomers of terpyridine, few have been utilized in extended coordination arrays. Here, we provide an overview of coordination polymers and networks containing isomers of terpyridine and either zinc(II) and cadmium(II). Although the motivation for investigations of many of these systems is their luminescent behavior, we have chosen to focus mainly on structural details, and we assess to what extent assemblies are reproducible. We also consider cases where there is structural evidence for competitive product formation. A point that emerges is the lack of systematic investigations.

Terpyridine-Based 3D Metal-Organic-Frameworks: A Structure-Property Correlation

Design, synthesis, and applications of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are among the most salient fields of research in modern inorganic and materials chemistry. As the structure and physical properties of MOFs are mostly dependent on the organic linkers or ligands, the choice of ligand system is of utmost importance in the design of MOFs. One such crucial organic linker/ligand is terpyridine (tpy), which can adopt various coordination modes to generate an enormous number of metal-organic frameworks. These frameworks generally carry physicochemical characteristics induced by the π-electron-rich (basically N-electron-rich moiety) terpyridines. In this minireview, the construction of 3D MOFs associated with symmetrical terpyridines is discussed. These ligands can be easily derivatized at the lateral phenyl (4'-phenyl) position and incorporate additional organic functionalities. These functionalities lead to some different binding modes and form higher dimensional (3D) frameworks. Therefore, these 3D MOFs can carry multiple features along with the characteristics of terpyridines. Some properties of these MOFs, like photophysical, chemical selectivity, photocatalytic degradation, proton conductivity, and magnetism, etc. have also been discussed and correlated with their frameworks.

A Heteropolynuclear Pt-Ag System Having Cycloplatinated Rollover Bipyridyl Units

The synthesis and photophysical properties of the heteropolynuclear Pt-Ag complex having cyclometalated rollover bipyridine ligands (bpy*) and bridging pyrazolato ligands are reported. The Pt₂Ag₂ complex was synthesized by two step reactions from a Pt(II) complex precursor having the rollover bpy* ligand, [Pt(bpy*)(dmso)Cl], with 3,5-dimethylpyrazole (Me₂pzH) and a subsequent replacement of NH protons in the Me₂pzH moieties with the Ag(I) ion. The Pt₂Ag₂ complex exists as a mixture of U- and Z-shaped isomers in solution, whose structures were clearly determined by single-crystal X-ray structural analyses. NMR studies using the single crystals revealed rapid isomerization of the Pt₂Ag₂ complexes in solution, although the Pt₂Ag₂ structures were supported effectively by the multiple metal-metal interactions. Furthermore, the Pt₂Ag₂ framework can capture a Ag(I) ion during the U-Z isomerization to afford a Pt₂Ag₃ core with the formation of Pt → Ag dative bonds. The Pt₂Ag₃ complex showed further aggregation to form a dimer structure in the presence of coordinating solvent via the crystallization process. The formation of Pt → Ag dative bonds significantly changes the emission energy from the Pt₂Ag₂ complex, while the emission spectra of U- and Z-isomers of Pt₂Ag₂ complex almost coincide with each other and their emissive properties are very similar. The density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations revealed the effects of additional Ag(I) ion on the photophysical properties of the heteropolynuclear Pt-Ag complexes bearing the rollover bpy* ligands.

The terpyridine isomer game: from chelate to coordination network building block

The first 4,2':6',4''-terpyridine (4,2':6',4''-tpy) containing coordination polymer was reported over 20 years ago and in the last decade, there has been increased interest in the use of ditopic 4,2':6',4''-tpy ligands as linkers in coordination polymers and 2D-networks. Functionalization in the 4'-position of 4,2':6',4''-tpy is synthetically straightforward, giving access to a large suite of building blocks. Less well explored is the coordination chemistry of 3,2':6',3''-tpy ligands which exhibit greater conformational flexibility than 4,2':6',4''-tpy. One approach to making the transition from 2D- to 3D-networks is to utilize tetratopic bis(4,2':6',4''-tpy) and bis(3,2':6',3''-tpy) ligands which act as 4-connecting nodes. In this highlight, we survey recent progress towards a better understanding of the design principles associated with the use of ditopic and tetratopic 4,2':6',4''-tpy and 3,2':6',3''-tpy containing ligands and their roles both as linkers and nodes in coordination assemblies.

Zinc(II) complexes with aromatic nitrogen-containing heterocycles as antifungal agents: Synergistic activity with clinically used drug nystatin

Three novel Zn(II) complexes, [ZnCl₂(qz)₂] (1), [ZnCl₂(1,5-naph)]_n (2) and [ZnCl₂(4,7-phen)₂] (3), where qz is quinazoline, 1,5-naph is 1,5-naphthyridine and 4,7-phen is 4,7-phenanthroline, were synthesized by the reactions of ZnCl₂ and the corresponding N-heterocyclic ligand in 1:2 molar ratio in ethanol at ambient temperature. The characterization of these complexes was done by NMR, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy, and their crystal structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Complexes 1 and 3 are mononuclear species, in which Zn(II) ion is tetrahedrally coordinated by two nitrogen atoms belonging to two qz or 4,7-phen ligands, respectively, and by two chloride anions, while complex 2 is a 1D coordination polymer that contains 1,5-naph as bridging ligand between two metal ions. In agar disc-diffusion assay, complexes 1-3 manifested good inhibitory activity against two investigated Candida strains (C. albicans and C. parapsilosis), while not inducing toxic effects on the healthy human fibroblast cell line (MRC-5). This activity was not fungicidal, as revealed by the broth microdilution assay, however complex 3 showed the ability to modulate Candida hyphae formation, which is an important process during infection and showed significant synergistic effect with clinically used antifungal polyene nystatin.

Directing 2D-Coordination Networks: Combined Effects of a Conformationally Flexible 3,2':6',3″-Terpyridine and Chain Length Variation in 4'-(4-n-Alkyloxyphenyl) Substituents

The synthesis and characterization of 4'-(4-n-propoxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3″-terpyridine is described. Five 2D-coordination networks have been isolated by crystal growth at room temperature from reactions of Co(NCS)2 with 4'-(4-n-alkyloxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3″-terpyridines in which the n-alkyl group is ethyl, n-propyl, n-butyl, n-pentyl and n-hexyl in ligands 2-6, respectively. The single-crystal structures of [{Co(2)2(NCS)2}.0.6CHCl3]n, [{Co(3)2(NCS)2}.4CHCl3.0.25H2O]n, [{Co(4)2(NCS)2}.4CHCl3]n, [Co2(5)4(NCS)4]n and [Co(6)2(NCS)2]n have been determined, and powder X-ray diffraction has demonstrated that the single-crystal structures are representative of the bulk materials. Each compound possesses a (4,4) net with Co centres as 4-connecting nodes. For the assemblies containing 2, 3 and 4, the (4,4) net comprises two geometrically different rhombuses, and the nets pack in an ABAB... arrangement with cone-like arrangements of n-alkyloxyphenyl groups being accommodated in a similar unit in an adjacent net. An increase in the n-alkyloxy chain length has two consequences: there is a change in the conformation of the 3,2':6',3″-tpy metal-binding domain, and the (4,4) net comprises identical rhombuses. Similarities and differences between the assemblies with ligands 2-6 and the previously reported [{Co(1)2(NCS)2}.3MeOH]n and [{Co(1)2(NCS)2}.2.2CHCl3]n in which 1 is 4'-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3″-terpyridine are discussed. The results demonstrate the effects of combining a variable chain length in the 4'-(4-n-alkyloxyphenyl) substituents of 3,2':6',3″-tpy and a conformationally flexible 3,2':6',3″-tpy metal-binding domain.

Coordination Chemistry of Ru(II) Complexes of an Asymmetric Bipyridine Analogue: Synergistic Effects of Supporting Ligand and Coordination Geometry on Reactivities

The reactivities of transition metal coordination compounds are often controlled by the environment around the coordination sphere. For ruthenium(II) complexes, differences in polypyridyl supporting ligands affect some types of reactivity despite identical coordination geometries. To evaluate the synergistic effects of (i) the supporting ligands, and (ii) the coordination geometry, a series of dicarbonyl-ruthenium(II) complexes that contain both asymmetric and symmetric bidentate polypyridyl ligands were synthesized. Molecular structures of the complexes were determined by X-ray crystallography to distinguish their steric configuration. Structural, computational, and electrochemical analysis revealed some differences between the isomers. Photo- and thermal reactions indicated that the reactivities of the complexes were significantly affected by both their structures and the ligands involved.

Metal Complexes Containing Redox-Active Ligands in Oxidation of Hydrocarbons and Alcohols: A Review

Ligands are innocent when they allow oxidation states of the central atoms to be defined. A noninnocent (or redox) ligand is a ligand in a metal complex where the oxidation state is not clear. Dioxygen can be a noninnocent species, since it exists in two oxidation states, i.e., superoxide (O2−) and peroxide (O22−). This review is devoted to oxidations of C–H compounds (saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons) and alcohols with peroxides (hydrogen peroxide, tert-butyl hydroperoxide) catalyzed by complexes of transition and nontransition metals containing innocent and noninnocent ligands. In many cases, the oxidation is induced by hydroxyl radicals. The mechanisms of the formation of hydroxyl radicals from H2O2 under the action of transition (iron, copper, vanadium, rhenium, etc.) and nontransition (aluminum, gallium, bismuth, etc.) metal ions are discussed. It has been demonstrated that the participation of the second hydrogen peroxide molecule leads to the rapture of O–O bond, and, as a result, to the facilitation of hydroxyl radical generation. The oxidation of alkanes induced by hydroxyl radicals leads to the formation of relatively unstable alkyl hydroperoxides. The data on regioselectivity in alkane oxidation allowed us to identify an oxidizing species generated in the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide: (hydroxyl radical or another species). The values of the ratio-of-rate constants of the interaction between an oxidizing species and solvent acetonitrile or alkane gives either the kinetic support for the nature of the oxidizing species or establishes the mechanism of the induction of oxidation catalyzed by a concrete compound. In the case of a bulky catalyst molecule, the ratio of hydroxyl radical attack rates upon the acetonitrile molecule and alkane becomes higher. This can be expanded if we assume that the reactions of hydroxyl radicals occur in a cavity inside a voluminous catalyst molecule, where the ratio of the local concentrations of acetonitrile and alkane is higher than in the whole reaction volume. The works of the authors of this review in this field are described in more detail herein.

The Early Years of 2,2'-Bipyridine-A Ligand in Its Own Lifetime

The first fifty years of the chemistry of 2,2′-bipyridine are reviewed from its first discovery in 1888 to the outbreak of the second global conflict in 1939. The coordination chemistry and analytical applications are described and placed in the context of the increasingly sophisticated methods of characterization which became available to the chemist in this time period. Many of the “simple” complexes of 2,2′-bipyridine reported in the early literature have been subsequently shown to have more complex structures.

Trinodal Self-Penetrating Nets from Reactions of 1,4-Bis(alkoxy)-2,5-bis(3,2’:6’,3’’-terpyridin-4’-yl)benzene Ligands with Cobalt(II) Thiocyanate

The tetratopic ligands 1,4-bis(2-ethylbutoxy)-2,5-bis(3,2’:6’,3’’-terpyridin-4’-yl)benzene (1) and 1,4-bis(3-methylbutoxy)-2,5-bis(3,2’:6’,3’’-terpyridin-4’-yl)benzene (2) have been prepared and characterized by 1H and 13C{1H} NMR, IR, and absorption spectroscopies and mass spectrometry. Reactions of 1 and 2 with cobalt(II) thiocyanate under conditions of crystal growth at room temperature result in the formation of [{Co(1)(NCS)2}·MeOH·3CHCl3]n and [{Co(2)(NCS)2}·0.8MeOH·1.8CHCl3]n. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that each crystal lattice consists of a trinodal self-penetrating (62.84)(64.82)(65.8)2 net. The nodes are defined by two independent cobalt centres and the centroids of two crystallographically independent ligands which are topologically equivalent.

2,2':6',2''-Terpyridine switches from tridentate to monodentate coordination in a gold(iii) terpy complex upon reaction with sodium azide

Reaction of [AuCl(terpy-κ³-N^1,1',1'')]Cl₂ with an excess of sodium azide did not result in the expected exchange of the chlorido by an azido ligand to give [Au(N₃)(terpy-κ³-N^1,1',1'')]²⁺. Instead, X-ray structure analysis showed that the isolated product is [Au(N₃)₃(terpy-κ¹-N¹)], in which the terpyridine ligand is in a very rare monodentate coordination mode. This is also the dominant species in solution, together with a minor amount of [Au(N₃)₂(terpy-κ²-N^1,1')]⁺. The stability of the tris(azido)gold(iii) moiety relative to other possible species was also confirmed by DFT calculations.

Self-assembly of heteroleptic dinuclear silver(i) complexes bridged by bis(diphenylphosphino)ethyne

We present a study of the self-assembling behaviour in solution of Ag[PF₆] with one equivalent of an N^N ligand (N^N = 6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine (6,6'-Me₂bpy) or 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (tpy)), together with either 0.5 or one equivalent of the bridging ligand bis(diphenylphosphino)ethyne (dppa). Each product contains a dinuclear cation, with one or two dppa ligands bridging the two Ag⁺ centres; 6,6'-Me₂bpy and tpy, respectively, act as chelating ligands. The compounds have been analysed in solution using NMR spectroscopic methods (¹H, ¹H{³¹P}, COSY, NOESY, ¹³C, HMQC and HMBC), including room and low temperature measurements. ³¹P{¹H} NMR spectra recorded at different temperatures allow a deeper insight into the dynamic equilibrium processes. In addition, solution ³¹P-¹⁰⁹Ag HSQC spectroscopic measurements were performed and show, inter alia, the ratio of the splitting in the F1 dimension and the ¹J_{³¹P-¹⁰⁹Ag} coupling constant in the fully coupled HSQC. Single crystal X-ray diffraction yielded two pseudo-polymorphic structures for the doubly-bridged [Ag₂(dppa)₂(tpy)₂][PF₆]₂ and one for the singly-bridged [Ag₂(dppa)(6,6'-Me₂bpy)₂][PF₆]₂.
