Modulation of single-chain magnet behaviour in a heterometallic Fe2Co cyanide-bridged 2D sheet

A cyanide-bridged Fe2Co 2D sheet exhibiting electron transfer coupled spin transition (ETCST) with co-existence of magnetic ordering below 50 K is reported. The complex exhibits single-chain magnet behaviour where the uncoordinated water molecules act as an exchange-breaking impurity by allowing only a fraction of the molecule to undergo a spin state change. The paramagnetic centres prevail throughout the chain on desolvation, thereby increasing the number of correlated units in the chain.

The influence of light on the field-induced magnetization dynamics of two Er(III) coordination polymers with different halogen substituents

Photocontrolled magnetic properties are fundamental for the applications of molecular magnets, which have the features of high time and space resolution; however, such magnetic properties are highly challenging to be achieved owing to the weak light-matter interactions. Herein, the influence of in situ light irradiation on the field-induced magnetization dynamics of two Er(III) coordination polymers 1 and 2 with the same coordination skeletons but different halogen substituents was studied. 1 and 2, and their in situ photoexcited products 1a and 2a, display field-induced magnetization dynamics based on Orbach and/or Raman processes. The magnetization dynamics are fine-modulated by the synergetic effect of light irradiation and a ligand substituent, due to the charge re-distribution of the excited states of the ligand.

Modulation of magnetization dynamics of an Er(III) coordination polymer by the conversion of a ligand to a radical using UV light

Light-induced substance conversion is highly promising for creating new radical-based compounds. Herein, we report an Er(III) coordination polymer [Er(CA)(ACA)(DMF)(H₂O)]_n (1) and its Y(III)-diluted analogue 1@Y (H₂CA = 2,5-dichloro-3,6-dihydroxy-p-quinone, HACA = 9-anthracene carboxylic acid) with the light-induced transformation of the ligand to a radical. The χ_MT values of light-transformed products 1a and 1a@Y are higher than those of 1 and 1@Y, respectively, due to the formation of radicals by ultraviolet light irradiation, confirmed by EPR measurement as well. The effective energy barriers for magnetization reversal (U_eff) decrease from 72 K for 1 to 67 K for 1a, and from 117 K for 1@Y to 94 K for 1a@Y. This work not only provides a new light-conversion system but also reveals the nature of photo-induced variation of magnetic properties.

Lattice Solvent Engineering Improves the Stability of a Cobalt Pyrenylnitronylnitroxide Ferrimagnetic Chain

Reaction of 2-(1'-pyrenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazole-3-oxide-1-oxyl (PyrNN) with [Co(hfac)₂(H₂O)₂] (hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate) in n-heptane solvent (hep) with a small amount of bromoform (CHBr₃ = bf) gives the 1D ferrimagnetic complex [Co(hfac)₂PyrNN]_n·0.5bf·0.5hep (Co-PyrNN·bf). This chain exhibits slow magnetic relaxation with magnetic blocking below 13.4 K, presenting a magnetic hysteresis with high coercive field (51 kOe at 5.0 K) as a hard magnet. It also shows frequency-dependent behavior consistent with one dominant relaxation process with an activation barrier of Δ_τ/k_B = (365 ± 24) K. The compound is an isomorphous variant of a previously reported ambient unstable chain made by using chloroform (CHCl₃ = cf), [Co(hfac)₂PyrNN]_n·0.5cf·0.5hep (Co-PyrNN·cf). This shows that the variation of a magnetically inactive lattice solvent can improve the stability of analogous, void space containing single-chain magnets.

Dual-radical-based molecular anisotropy and synergy effect of semi-conductivity and valence tautomerization in a photoswitchable coordination polymer

Organic radicals are widely used as linkers or ligands to synthesize molecular magnetic materials. However, studies regarding the molecular anisotropies of radical-based magnetic materials and their multifunctionalities are rare. Herein, a photoisomerizable diarylethene ligand was used to form {[Co^III(3,5-DTSQ^·-)(3,5-DTCat^2-)]₂(6F-DAE-py₂)}·3CH₃CN·H₂O (o-1·3CH₃CN·H₂O, 6F-DAE-py₂ = 1,2-bis(2-methyl-5-(4-pyridyl)-3-thienyl)perfluorocyclopentene), a valence-tautomeric (VT) coordination polymer. We directly observed dual radicals for a single crystal using high-field/-frequency (∼13.3 T and ∼360 GHz) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy along the c-axis, which was further confirmed by angle-dependent Q-band EPR spectroscopy. Moreover, a conductive anomaly close to the VT transition temperature was observed only when probes were attached at the ab plane of the single crystal, indicative of synergy between valence tautomerism and conductivity. Structural anisotropy studies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that this synergy is due to electron transfer associated with valence tautomerism. This study presents the first example of dual-radical-based molecular anisotropy and charge-transfer-induced conductive anisotropy in a photoswitchable coordination polymer.

Lanthanide-radical single-molecule magnets: current status and future challenges

In the field of molecular magnetism, the lanthanide-radical (Ln-Rad) method has become one of the most appealing tactics for introducing strong magnetic interactions and has spurred on the booming development of heterospin single-molecule magnets (SMMs). The article is a timely retrospect on the research progress of Ln-Rad heterospin systems and special attention is invested on low dimensional Ln-Rad compounds with SMM behavior, primarily concerning with nitrogen-based radicals, semiquinone and nitroxide radicals. Rational design, molecular structures, magnetic behaviors and magneto-structural correlations are highlighted. Meanwhile, particular attention is focused on the influence of exchange couplings on the dynamic magnetic properties, with the purpose of helping to guide the design of prospective radical-based Ln-SMMs.

Magnetic and Luminescent Dual Responses of Photochromic Hexaazamacrocyclic Lanthanide Complexes

Herein, hexaazamacrocyclic ligand L^N6 was employed to construct a series of photochromic rare-earth complexes, [Ln(L^N6)(NO₃)₂](BPh₄) [1-Ln, Ln = Dy, Tb, Eu, Gd, Y; L^N6 = (3E,5E,10E,12E)-3,6,10,13-tetraaza-1,8(2,6)-dipyridinacyclotetradecaphane-3,5,10,12-tetraene]. The behavior of photogenerated radicals of hexaazamacrocyclic ligands was revealed for the first time. Upon 365 nm light irradiation, complexes 1-Ln exhibit photochromic behavior induced by photogenerated radicals according to EPR and UV-vis analyses. Static and dynamic magnetic studies of 1-Dy and irradiated product 1-Dy* indicate weak ferromagnetic interactions among Dy^III ions and photogenerated L^N6 radicals, as well as slow magnetization relaxation behavior under a 2 kOe applied field. Further fitting analyses show that the magnetization relaxation in 1-Dy* is markedly different from 1-Dy. Time-dependent fluorescence measurements reveal the characteristic luminescence quenching dynamics of lanthanide in the photochromic process. Especially for irradiated product 1-Eu*, the luminescence is almost completely quenched within 5 min with a quenching efficiency of 98.4%. The results reported here provide a prospect for the design of radical-induced photochromic lanthanide single-molecule magnets and will promote the further development of multiresponsive photomagnetic materials.

A single-ion magnet building block strategy toward Dy2 single-molecule magnets with enhanced magnetic performance

A molecular dysprosium(III) complex [Dy(DClQ)₃(H₂O)₂] (1) was used as a building unit for the construction of lanthanide SMMs, leading to the isolation of two dinuclear Dy(III) complexes, namely [Dy₂(DClQ)₆(MeOH)₂] (2) and [Dy₂(DClQ)₆(bpmo)₂]·6MeCN (3) (DClQ = 5,7-dichloro-8-hydroxyquinoline, bpmo = 4,4'-dipyridine-oxide). Structural analyses revealed the same N₃O₅ coordination environment of the Dy(III) centers with a distorted biaugmented trigonal prism (C_2V symmetry) and triangular dodecahedron (D_2d symmetry) for 2 and 3, respectively. Magnetic studies revealed the presence of ferromagnetic and weak antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between the Dy³⁺ centers in 2 and 3, respectively. Interestingly, slow relaxation of magnetization at zero fields was evidenced with an U_eff of 51.4 K and 159.0 K for complexes 2 and 3, respectively. The detailed analysis of relaxation dynamics discloses that the Orbach process is dominant for 2 whereas Raman and QTM play an important role in 3. Theoretical calculations were carried out to provide insight into the magnetic exchange interactions and relaxation dynamics for the complexes. Due to a single-ion magnet (SIM) of 1, the foregoing results demonstrate a SIM modular synthetic route for the preparation of dinuclear lanthanide SMMs.

Numerical Interchain Mean-Field Theory for the Specific Heat of the Bimetallic Ferromagnetically Coupled Chain Compound MnNi(NO2)4(en)2 (en = Ethylenediamine)

We present a detailed study of the field-dependent specific heat of the bimetallic ferromagnetically coupled chain compound MnNi(NO2)4(en)2, en = ethylenediamine. For this material, which in zero field orders antiferromagnetically below TN=2.45 K, small fields suppress magnetic order. Instead, in such fields, a double-peak-like structure in the temperature dependence of the specific heat is observed. We attribute this behavior to the existence of an acoustic and an optical mode in the spin-wave dispersion as a result of the existence of two different spins per unit cell. We compare our experimental data to numerical results for the specific heat obtained by exact diagonalization and Quantum Monte Carlo simulations for the alternating spin-chain model, using parameters that have been derived from the high-temperature behavior of the magnetic susceptibility. The interchain coupling is included in the numerical treatment at the mean-field level. We observe remarkable agreement between experiment and theory, including the ordering transition, using previously determined parameters. Furthermore, the observed strong effect of an applied magnetic field on the ordered state of MnNi(NO2)4(en)2 promises interesting magnetocaloric properties.

Ferromagnetic 2p-2p and 4f-2p Couplings in a Macrocycle from Two Biradicals and Two Gadolinium(III) Ions

A new ground triplet biradical 2′,4′,6′-triisopropylbiphenyl-3,5-diyl bis(tert-butyl nitroxide) (iPr3BPBN) was prepared and characterized by means of room-temperature ESR spectroscopy displaying a zero-field splitting pattern together with a half-field signal. Complex formation with gadolinium(III) 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoropentane-2,4-dionate (hfac) afforded a macrocycle [{Gd(hfac)3(μ-iPr3BPBN)}2]. As the X-ray crystallographic analysis clarified, the biradical serves as a bridging ligand, giving a 16-membered ring, where each nitroxide radical oxygen atom is directly bonded to a Gd3+ ion. The magnetic study revealed that the iPr3BPBN bridge behaved as a practically triplet biradical and that the Gd3+-radical magnetic coupling was weakly ferromagnetic. The exchange parameters were estimated as 2jrad-rad/kB > 300 K and 2JGd-rad/kB = 1.2 K in the H = −2J S1•S2 convention. The DFT calculation based on the atomic coordinates clarified the ground triplet nature in metal-free iPr3BPBN and the enhanced triplet character upon coordination. The calculation also suggests that ferromagnetic coupling would be favorable when the Gd-O-N-C(sp2) torsion comes around 100°. The present results are compatible with the proposed magneto-structure relationship on the nitroxide-Gd compounds.

High-Frequency EPR Studies of New 2p-3d Complexes Based on a Triazolyl-Substituted Nitronyl Nitroxide Radical: The Role of Exchange Anisotropy in a Cu-Radical System

Using the 1-(m-tolyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazole-4-(4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide) (TlTrzNIT) radical and metal β-diketonate complexes [M(hfac)₂(H₂O)₂], where hfac is hexafluoroacetylacetonato, three new 2p-3d heterospin complexes were synthesized. Their structures were solved using single crystal X-ray diffraction data, and magnetic investigation was performed by DC and AC measurements and multifrequency EPR spectroscopy. Compounds 1 and 2 are isostructural complexes with molecular formula [M₃(TlTrzNIT)₂(hfac)₆] (M^II = Mn or Cu) while compound 3 is the mononuclear [Co(TlTrzNIT)(hfac)₂] complex. In all complexes, the radical acts as a bidentate ligand through the oxygen atom of the nitroxide moiety and the nitrogen atom from the triazole group. Furthermore, in compounds 1 and 2, the TlTrzNIT is bridge-coordinated between two metal centers, leading to the formation of trinuclear complexes. The fitting of the static magnetic behavior reveals antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic intramolecular interactions for complexes 1 and 2, respectively. The EPR spectra of 1 are well described by an isolated ferrimagnetic S = ¹³/₂ (= ⁵/₂ - ¹/₂ + ⁵/₂ - ¹/₂ + ⁵/₂) ground state with a biaxial zero-field splitting (ZFS) interaction characterized, respectively, by 2nd order axial and rhombic parameters, D and E, such that E/D is close to the maximum of 0.33. Meanwhile, EPR spectra for 2 are explained in terms of a ferromagnetic model with weakly anisotropic Cu-radical exchange interactions, giving rise to an isolated S = ⁵/₂ (= 5 × ¹/₂) ground state with both an anisotropic g tensor and a weak ZFS interaction. Complex 2 represents one of only a few examples of Cu-radical moieties with measurable exchange anisotropy.

Rare-Earth (RE = Y, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er) Chains Bridged with a Triplet Biradical and Magnetic Hysteresis Recorded for RE = Tb

Complex formation of 5-tert-butyl-1,3-phenylene bis(tert-butyl nitroxide) and rare-earth (RE) metal ions gave a linear chain where each nitroxide O atom is directly bonded to the RE ion. The bridge was proven to be a ground triplet molecule in the complexes. A hysteresis loop was recorded below 2.8 K as a single-chain magnet for the RE = Tb derivative.

Achieving large thermal hysteresis in an anthracene-based manganese(II) complex via photo-induced electron transfer

Achieving magnetic bistability with large thermal hysteresis is still a formidable challenge in material science. Here we synthesize a series of isostructural chain complexes using 9,10-anthracene dicarboxylic acid as a photoactive component. The electron transfer photochromic Mn²⁺ and Zn²⁺ compounds with photogenerated diradicals are confirmed by structures, optical spectra, magnetic analyses, and density functional theory calculations. For the Mn²⁺ analog, light irradiation changes the spin topology from a single Mn²⁺ ion to a radical-Mn²⁺ single chain, further inducing magnetic bistability with a remarkably wide thermal hysteresis of 177 K. Structural analysis of light irradiated crystals at 300 and 50 K reveals that the rotation of the anthracene rings changes the Mn1–O2–C8 angle and coordination geometries of the Mn²⁺ center, resulting in magnetic bistability with this wide thermal hysteresis. This work provides a strategy for constructing molecular magnets with large thermal hysteresis via electron transfer photochromism.

Achieving magnetic bistability with large thermal hysteresis is still a challenge in material science. Here, the authors report a Mn(II) chain complex that enables light-induced magnetic bistability with a 177 K thermal hysteresis loop.

Hetero-tri-spin systems: an alternative stairway to the single molecule magnet heaven?

The search for molecule-based magnetic materials has stimulated over the years the development of extremely rich coordination chemistry. Various combinations of spin carriers have been investigated and illustrated by a plethora of hetero-spin complexes: 3d-nd, 3d-4f, 2p-3d, and 2p-4f. More recently, two other classes of hetero-spin complexes have grown rapidly: compounds containing three different paramagnetic metal ions, or one radical and two different paramagnetic metal ions (all within the same molecular entity). Such new classes of systems represent a challenge both from a synthetic and theoretical point of view. Indeed, the synthetic control and the understanding of the spin topology effect on the overall magnetic behavior from first-principles is a difficult problem to be solved. The presence of different spin carriers in a single molecule makes such compounds particularly interesting because they offer the possibility of developing new magnetic properties, different from those of hetero-bi-spin or homo-spin systems. A critical overview taking the case of 2p-3d-4f complexes is the focus of this perspective paper. An original organic picture of the state-of-art in this field and new hints about the main directions that should be pursued to achieve hetero-tri-spin systems with large anisotropy barriers, low quantum tunneling of magnetization and, possibly, large blocking temperatures are provided in this article through an analysis based on numerically revisiting already published data and a critical survey of the literature reported so far. The reasons for the limited success obtained for the largely used 3d-2p-4f topology are given along with the ones explaining the failure for the 2p-4f-3d case. The still never synthesized linear 2p-3d-4f spin topology seemed to be the most promising one based on the results obtained for the unique closed hetero-tri-spin closed triangular system synthesized so far.

Photo-induced variation of magnetism in coordination polymers with ligand-based electron transfer

Photo-induced variation of magnetism from ligand-based electron transfer has been extensively studied because of its potential applications in magneto-optical memory devices, light-responsive switches, and high-density information storage materials. In this review, we discussed the progress in the photo-induced variation of magnetism in coordination polymers with ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT), ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (LLCT) and internal ligand charge transfer (ILCT), which provides fundamentals for the rational design of multi-functional materials. We also discussed the design and synthetic strategy of such molecule-based materials and gave views on the current challenges and growth trends in this field.

Investigation of Various Organic Radicals Dispersed in Polymethylmethacrylate Matrices Using the Electron Spin Resonance Spectroscopy Technique

The electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy technique was used to study various organic radicals, such as 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxyl (TEMPO), 4-hydroxy-TEMPO (TEMPOL), 2-X-nitronylnitroxide (2-X-NN, X = Ph, NO₂Ph, or cyclohexyl), 4-Y-benzonitronylnitroxide (4-Y-PhBzNN, Y = Ph or NO₂Ph), and 2-Z-iminonitroxide (2-Z-IN, Z = Ph or NO₂Ph) dispersed in a polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) matrix. The experiments were conducted at room temperature. The complex nature of the recorded ESR spectra could be attributed to the superposition of the rotational diffusion component of TEMPO (or TEMPOL) in the nanospace of the PMMA matrix with the rigid-limit component. A single component of the rigid-limit was observed for 2-X-NN and 4-Y-PhBzNN radicals dispersed in the PMMA matrix. The isotropic components of g and hyperfine ( A ) tensor, estimated by analyzing the solution spectra, were used to determine the g and A components of 4-Y-PhBzNN. Only the rotational diffusion component was observed for the 2-Z-IN radical. These results demonstrated that the PMMA matrix contains cylindrical nanospaces. Various radicals other than TEMPO derivatives could be used in the ESR spin probe technique as probe molecules for determining the structures, sizes, and shapes of the nanospaces.

Single-chain magnet behavior in a finite linear hexanuclear molecule

The careful monitoring of crystallization conditions of a mixture made of a TbIII building block and a substituted nitronyl-nitroxide that typically provides infinite coordination polymers (chains), affords a remarkably stable linear hexanuclear molecule made of six TbIII ions and five NIT radicals. The hexanuclear units are double-bridged by water molecules but ab initio calculations demonstrate that this bridge is inefficient in mediating any magnetic interaction other than a small dipolar antiferromagnetic coupling. Surprisingly the hexanuclears, despite being finite molecules, show a single-chain magnet (SCM) behavior. This results in a magnetic hysteresis at low temperature whose coercive field is almost doubled when compared to the chains. We thus demonstrate that finite linear molecules can display SCM magnetic relaxation, which is a strong asset for molecular data storage purposes because 1D magnetic relaxation is more robust than the relaxation mechanisms observed in single-molecule magnets (SMMs) where under-barrier magnetic relaxation can operate.

A high-spin diradical dianion and its bridged chemically switchable single-molecule magnet

Triplet diradicals have attracted tremendous attention due to their promising application in organic spintronics, organic magnets and spin filters. However, very few examples of triplet diradicals with singlet–triplet energy gaps (ΔE_ST) over 0.59 kcal mol⁻¹ (298 K) have been reported to date. In this work, we first proved that the dianion of 2,7-di-tert-butyl-pyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone (2,7-tBu₂-PTO) was a triplet ground state diradical in the magnesium complex 1 with a singlet–triplet energy gap ΔE_ST = 0.94 kcal mol⁻¹ (473 K). This is a rare example of stable diradicals with singlet–triplet energy gaps exceeding the thermal energy at room temperature (298 K). Moreover, the iron analog 2 containing the 2,7-tBu₂-PTO diradical dianion was isolated, which was the first single-molecule magnet bridged by a diradical dianion. When 2 was doubly reduced to the dianion salt 2K2, single-molecule magnetism was switched off, highlighting the importance of diradicals in single-molecule magnetism.

We report a triplet diradical dianion in magnesium complex with ΔE_ST = 0.94 kcal mol⁻¹ (473 K). Its iron analog is the first single-molecule magnet bridged by a diradical dianion, and the SMM property is switched off through two-electron reduction.

Enhancing the magnetic performance of pyrazine-N-oxide bridged dysprosium chains through controlled variation of ligand coordination modes

While assembling superparamagnetic units in a controlled manner is crucial for future applications of molecular nanomagnets, optimizing their magnetic properties while achieving directional assembly of these units still remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we demonstrate how the assembly of two dysprosium chain complexes, namely, [Dy₂(L)₂Cl₂(CH₃OH)₃]_n·nCH₃OH (1) and [Dy(L)Cl(DMF)]_n (2) (H₂L = N'-(5-bromo-2-hydroxybenzylidene)pyrazine-N-oxide-carbohydrazide), can be successfully manipulated using an appropriate bridging ligand design. Both complexes contain similar dimeric units bridged by two alkoxido oxygens from an L^2- ligand, but extended by its pyrazine-N-oxide group exhibiting two distinct coordination modes, namely, single and double pyrazine-N-oxide bridges, respectively. Magnetic studies reveal that both complexes display typical slow magnetic relaxation under zero direct-current field; however, the anisotropy barrier and the coercive field at 2 K for complex 2 are twice as much as that of 1. A further theoretical study indicates that switching the coordination mode from a single pyrazine-N-oxide bridge to double bridges can enhance both the magnetic anisotropy of dysprosium ions and magnetic coupling within the dimeric cores. The synergistic effect between the magnetic anisotropy of dysprosium ions and magnetic interactions among them directly contributes to the overall better performance of complex 2.

Molecular S = 2 High-Spin, S = 0 Low-Spin and S = 0 ⇄ 2 Spin-Transition/-Crossover Nickel(II)-Bis(nitroxide) Coordination Compounds

Heterospin systems have a great advantage in frontier orbital engineering since they utilize a wide diversity of paramagnetic chromophores and almost infinite combinations and mutual geometries. Strong exchange couplings are expected in 3d–2p heterospin compounds, where the nitroxide (aminoxyl) oxygen atom has a direct coordination bond with a nickel(II) ion. Complex formation of nickel(II) salts and tert-butyl 2-pyridyl nitroxides afforded a discrete 2p–3d–2p triad. Ferromagnetic coupling is favored when the magnetic orbitals, nickel(II) dσ and radical π*, are arranged in a strictly orthogonal fashion, namely, a planar coordination structure is characterized. In contrast, a severe twist around the coordination bond gives an orbital overlap, resulting in antiferromagnetic coupling. Non-chelatable nitroxide ligands are available for highly twisted and practically diamagnetic complexes. Here, the Ni–O–N–Csp2 torsion (dihedral) angle is supposed to be a useful metric to describe the nickel ion dislocated out of the radical π* nodal plane. Spin-transition complexes exhibited a planar coordination structure in a high-temperature phase and a nonplanar structure in a low-temperature phase. The gradual spin transition is described as a spin equilibrium obeying the van’t Hoff law. Density functional theory calculation indicates that the energy level crossing of the high- and low-spin states. The optimized structures of diamagnetic and high-spin states well agreed with the experimental large and small torsions, respectively. The novel mechanism of the present spin transition lies in the ferro-/antiferromagnetic coupling switch. The entropy-driven mechanism is plausible after combining the results of the related copper(II)-nitroxide compounds. Attention must be paid to the coupling parameter J as a variable of temperature in the magnetic analysis of such spin-transition materials. For future work, the exchange coupling may be tuned by chemical modification and external stimulus, because it has been clarified that the parameter is sensitive to the coordination structure and actually varies from 2J/kB = +400 K to −1400 K.

A Hidden Coordination-Bond Torsional Deformation as a Sign of Possible Spin Transition in Nickel(II)-Bis(nitroxide) Compounds

Complex formation of nickel(II) tetrafluoroborate and tert-butyl 5-phenyl-2-pyridyl nitroxide (phpyNO) in the presence of sodium cyanate gave a discrete molecule [Ni(phpyNO)2(X)2] (X = NCO). The Ni-O-N-Csp2 torsion angles were reduced on heating; 33.5(5)° and 36.2(4)° at 100 K vs. 25.7(10)° and 32.3(11)° at 400 K. The magnetic behavior was almost diamagnetic below ca. 100 K, and the χmT value reached 1.04 cm3 K mol-1 at 400 K. An analysis using the van't Hoff equation indicates a possible spin transition at T1/2 >> 400 K. Density functional theory calculation shows that the singlet-quintet energy gap decreases as the structural change from 100 to 400 K. The geometry optimization results suggest that the diamagnetic state has the Ni-O-N-Csp2 torsion angles of 32.7° while the Stotal = 2 state has those of 11.9°. The latter could not be experimentally observed even at 400 K. After overviewing the results on the known X = Br, Cl, and NCS derivatives, the magnetic behavior is described in a common phase diagram. The Br and Cl compounds undergo the energy level crossing of the high-/low-spin states, but the NCS and NCO compounds do not in a conventional experimental temperature range. The spin transition mechanism in this series involves the exchange coupling switch between ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions, corresponding to the high- and low-spin phases, respectively.

Coercive Fields Above 6 T in Two Cobalt(II)-Radical Chain Compounds

Lanthanide permanent magnets are widely used in applications ranging from nanotechnology to industrial engineering. However, limited access to the rare earths and rising costs associated with their extraction are spurring interest in the development of lanthanide-free hard magnets. Zero- and one-dimensional magnetic materials are intriguing alternatives due to their low densities, structural and chemical versatility, and the typically mild, bottom-up nature of their synthesis. Here, we present two one-dimensional cobalt(II) systems Co(hfac)₂ (R-NapNIT) (R-NapNIT=2-(2'-(R-)naphthyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide, R=MeO or EtO) supported by air-stable nitronyl nitroxide radicals. These compounds are single-chain magnets and exhibit wide, square magnetic hysteresis below 14 K, with giant coercive fields up to 65 or 102 kOe measured using static or pulsed high magnetic fields, respectively. Magnetic, spectroscopic, and computational studies suggest that the record coercivities derive not from three-dimensional ordering but from the interaction of adjacent chains that compose alternating magnetic sublattices generated by crystallographic symmetry.
