Recent advances in the functional applications of conducting metallopolymers

CO2 Electroreduction on Carbon-Based Electrodes Functionalized with Molecular Organometallic Complexes—A Mini Review

Heterogeneous electrochemical CO2 reduction has potential advantages with respect to the homogeneous counterpart due to the easier recovery of products and catalysts, the relatively small amounts of catalyst necessary for efficient electrolysis, the longer lifetime of the catalysts, and the elimination of solubility problems. Unfortunately, several disadvantages are also present, including the difficulty of designing the optimized and best-performing catalysts by the appropriate choice of the ligands as well as a larger heterogeneity in the nature of the catalytic site that introduces differences in the mechanistic pathway and in electrogenerated products. The advantages of homogeneous and heterogeneous systems can be preserved by anchoring intact organometallic molecules on the electrode surface with the aim of increasing the dispersion of active components at a molecular level and facilitating the electron transfer to the electrocatalyst. Electrode functionalization can be obtained by non-covalent or covalent interactions and by direct electropolymerization on the electrode surface. A critical overview covering the very recent literature on CO2 electroreduction by intact organometallic complexes attached to the electrode is summarized herein, and particular attention is given to their catalytic performances. We hope this mini review can provide new insights into the development of more efficient CO2 electrocatalysts for real-life applications.

Electrocatalytic Reduction of CO2 in Water by a Palladium-Containing Metallopolymer

The palladium–salen complex was immobilized by electropolymerization onto a Pt disc electrode and applied as an electrocatalyst for the reduction of CO2 in an aqueous solution. Linear sweep voltammetry measurements and rotating disk experiments were carried out to study the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide. The onset overpotential for carbon dioxide reduction was approximately −0.22 V vs. NHE on the poly-Pd(salen) modified electrode. In addition, by combining the electrochemical study with a kinetic study, the rate-determining step of the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) was found to be the radial reduction of carbon dioxide to the CO adsorbed on the metal.

Metal-containing organic compounds for memory and data storage applications

With the upcoming trend of Big Data era, some new types of memory technologies have emerged as substitutes for the traditional Si-based semiconductor memory devices, which are encountering severe scaling down technical obstacles. In particular, the resistance random access memory (RRAM) and magnetic random access memory (MRAM) hold great promise for the in-memory computing, which are regarded as the optimal strategy and pathway to solve the von Neumann bottleneck by high-throughput in situ data processing. As far as the active materials in RRAM and MRAM are concerned, organic semiconducting materials have shown increasing application perspectives in memory devices due to their rich structural diversity and solution processability. With the introduction of metal elements into the backbone of molecules, some new properties and phenomena will emerge accordingly. Consequently, the RRAM and MRAM devices based on metal-containing organic compounds (including the small molecular metal complexes, metallopolymers, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and organic-inorganic-hybrid perovskites (OIHPs)) have been widely explored and attracted intense attention. In this review, we highlight the fundamentals of RRAM and MRAM, as well as the research progress of the applications of metal-containing organic compounds in both RRAM and MRAM. Finally, we discuss the challenges and future directions for the research of organic RRAM and MRAM.

Highly efficient carbazolylgold(iii) dendrimers based on thermally activated delayed fluorescence and their application in solution-processed organic light-emitting devices

A new class of C^C^N ligand-containing carbazolylgold(iii) dendrimers has been designed and synthesized. High photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 82% in solid-state thin films and large radiative decay rate constants in the order of 10⁵ s⁻¹ are observed. These gold(iii) dendrimers are found to exhibit thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), as supported by variable-temperature emission spectroscopy, time-resolved photoluminescence decay and computational studies. Solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on these gold(iii) dendrimers have been fabricated, which exhibit a maximum current efficiency of 52.6 cd A⁻¹, maximum external quantum efficiency of 15.8% and high power efficiency of 41.3 lm W⁻¹. The operational stability of these OLEDs has also been recorded, with the devices based on zero- and second-generation dendrimers showing maximum half-lifetimes of 1305 and 322 h at 100 cd m⁻², respectively, representing the first demonstration of operationally stable solution-processed OLEDs based on gold(iii) dendrimers.

A Novel Cobalt Metallopolymer with Redox-Matched Conjugated Organic Backbone via Electropolymerization of a Readily Available N4 Cobalt Complex

Fast and reversible cobalt-centered redox reactions in metallopolymers are the key to using these materials in energy storage, electrocatalytic, and sensing applications. Metal-centered electrochemical activity can be enhanced via redox matching of the conjugated organic backbone and cobalt centers. In this study, we present a novel approach to redox matching via modification of the cobalt coordination site: a conductive electrochemically active polymer was electro-synthesized from [Co(Amben)] complex (Amben = N,N′-bis(o-aminobenzylidene)ethylenediamine) for the first time. The poly-[Co(Amben)] films were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM), in situ UV-vis-NIR spectroelectrochemistry, and in situ conductance measurements between −0.9 and 1.3 V vs. Ag/Ag⁺. The polymer displayed multistep redox processes involving reversible transfer of the total of 1.25 electrons per repeat unit. The findings indicate consecutive formation of three redox states during reversible electrochemical oxidation of the polymer film, which were identified as benzidine radical cations, Co(III) ions, and benzidine di-cations. The Co(II)/Co(III) redox switching is retained in the thick polymer films because it occurs at potentials of high polymer conductivity due to the optimum redox matching of the Co(II)/Co(III) redox pair with the organic conjugated backbone. It makes poly-[Co(Amben)] suitable for various practical applications based on cobalt-mediated redox reactions.

Fluorescence-Based Sensing of Pesticides Using Supramolecular Chemistry

The detection of pesticides in real-world environments is a high priority for a broad range of applications, including in areas of public health, environmental remediation, and agricultural sustainability. While many methods for pesticide detection currently exist, the use of supramolecular fluorescence-based methods has significant practical advantages. Herein, we will review the use of fluorescence-based pesticide detection methods, with a particular focus on supramolecular chemistry-based methods. Illustrative examples that show how such methods have achieved success in real-world environments are also included, as are areas highlighted for future research and development.

Fluorescent chemosensors based on conjugated polymers with N-heterocyclic moieties: two decades of progress

A brief summary of representative fluorescent chemosensors based on conjugated polymers with N-heterocyclic moieties, followed by a discussion on the limitations and challenges of current systems, as well as possible future research directions.

Recent advances in metallopolymer-based drug delivery systems

Metallopolymers (MPs) or metal-containing polymers have shown great potential as new drug delivery systems (DDSs) due to their unique properties, including universal architectures, composition, properties and surface chemistry. Over the past few decades, the exponential growth of many new classes of MPs that deal with these issues has been demonstrated. This review presents and assesses the recent advances and challenges associated with using MPs as DDSs. Among the most widely used MPs for these purposes, metal complexes based on synthetic and natural polymers, coordination polymers, metal-organic frameworks, and metallodendrimers are distinguished. Particular attention is paid to the stimulus- and multistimuli-responsive metallopolymer-based DDSs. Of considerable interest is the use of MPs for combination therapy and multimodal systems. Finally, the problems and future prospects of using metallopolymer-based DDSs are outlined. The bibliography includes articles published over the past five years.
