A bicarboxaminoquinoline-based ratiometric fluorescent sensor for the sequential detection of Zn2+ and PPi

A new ratiometric fluorescent sensor (LP) based on bicarboxaminoquinoline was designed and synthesized for sequentially recognizing Zn2+ and PPi. In aqueous solution, LP exhibited the ratiometric fluorescence response towards Zn2+, along with the about 4-folds enhancement of fluorescence quantum yield. Subsequently, the LP-Zn2+ complex displayed the fluorescence recovery upon adding PPi through the displacement strategy. And the LODs of LP and its Zn2+ complex for sensing Zn2+ and PPi were found to be 15 nM and 5.5 nM, respectively. Notably, the reversibility of LP for sequentially sensing Zn2+ and PPi had been employed to construct the INHIBIT logic gate. Moreover, LP and its Zn2+ complex had been successfully utilized for the detection of Zn2+ and PPi in two real water samples and cells imaging.

Green and sustainable smart wooden system integrated with cellulose nanowhiskers-supported polyvinyl alcohol and anthocyanin biomolecules to monitor food freshness

Smart packaging materials have been used to protect human health from environmental hazards by sending real-time colorimetric signals for changes in the food packaging environment. However, the colorimetric material sensors use synthetic sensor dyes, which are toxic, expensive, non-biodegradable, and difficult to prepare. Herein, a simple strategy is presented for the development of an environmentally-friendly halochromic wood able to change color upon exposure to spoilage of food. A combination of anthocyanin (Ac)/aluminum (Al) mordant (Ac/Al) nanoparticles and cellulose nanowhiskers (CNW)-reinforced polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was infiltrated into a delignified wood to produce a translucent wood with halochromic properties. CNW were employed as reinforcement agent to improve the mechanical performance of PVA. Additionally, CNW function as a dispersing agent to prevent agglomeration of Ac/Al nanoparticles. The diameters of CNW are in the range of 12-19 nm, whereas Ac/Al particles showed diameters of 9-22 nm. The smart wood changed color from purplish to colorless when exposed to food spoilage. A hypsochromic change from 539 nm to 370 nm was shown by the anthocyanin receptor when the spoilage level of food increased. This could be attributed to the pH-driven molecular switching of anthocyanin, leading to charge delocalization.

Anion-binding-induced selective aggregation and self-degradation: Influence of positional isomerism on the anion selectivity and mode of binding of an imine-based receptor

Imine based positional isomers (8E)-N-(4-((E)-(perfluorophenylimino)methyl)benzylidene)-2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorobenzenamine, L and (10E)-N-(3-(E-Perfluorophenylimino)methyl)benzylidene)-2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorobenzenamine, L1 have been designed, and synthesized by functionalizing two electron deficient aromatic moieties at the para-para'/ortho-ortho' positions in the phenyl core of the L and L1 respectively. The responses of L and L1 towards various anionic species are examined. The positional isomers L and L1 differs not only by showing distinguishable color change upon addition of anions but also differentiates themselves by the way of self-assembling together upon binding with cyanide anion. The naked-eye colorimetric experiments, UV-Vis, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, and Infra-Red spectroscopic analyses reveal that the isomer L binds fluoride anion through 2:1 stoichiometry ratio. Unlike fluoride complex, the isomer L form aggregates while binding with cyanide ion. On the other hand, isomer L1 does not show any instant color change upon additions of any anion. Interestingly, after thirty minutes, only the color of the cyanide complex is turned into dark brown. While analyzing the spectroscopic results of cyanide complex of L1, it is found that the cyanide complex begins to decompose and finally it is completely decomposed within 30 min. This unprecedented phenomenon about the colorimetric sensing of cyanide and destruction of cyanide complex with respect to time has not been reported in the literature yet. To the best of our knowledge this is the first example of study of sensing controlling the selectivity, mode of binding, self-aggregating and degradation properties of anionic complexes under the influence of positional isomeric effects. This present investigation provides simple and effective strategy to construct the sensor molecules with tunable binding properties in terms of easy to prepare as well as easy to use as a colorimetric sensor. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________.

Recognition of anion-water clusters by peptide-based supramolecular capsules

The biological and technological importance of anion-mediated processes has made the development of improved methods for the selective recognition of anions one of the most relevant research topics today. The hydration sphere of anions plays an important role in the functions performed by anions by forming a variety of cluster complexes. Here we describe a supramolecular capsule that recognizes hydrated anion clusters. These clusters are most likely composed of three ions that form hydrated C3 symmetry complexes that are entrapped within the supramolecular capsule of the same symmetry. The capsule is made of self-assembled α,γ-cyclic peptide containing amino acid with by five-membered rings and equipped with a tris(triazolylethyl)amine cap. To recognise the hydrated anion clusters, the hexapeptide capsule must disassemble to entrap them between its two subunits.

A Halogen Bonding [2]Rotaxane Shuttle for Chloride-Selective Optical Sensing

The first example of a [2]rotaxane shuttle capable of selective optical sensing of chloride anions over other halides is reported. The rotaxane was synthesised via a chloride ion template-directed cyclisation of an isophthalamide macrocycle around a multi-station axle containing peripheral naphthalene diimide (NDI) stations and a halogen bonding (XB) bis(iodotriazole) based station. Proton NMR studies indicate the macrocycle resides preferentially at the NDI stations in the free rotaxane, where it is stabilised by aromatic donor-acceptor charge transfer interactions between the axle NDI and macrocycle hydroquinone moieties. Addition of chloride ions in an aqueous-acetone solvent mixture induces macrocycle translocation to the XB anion binding station to facilitate the formation of convergent XB⋅⋅⋅Cl- and hydrogen bonding HB⋅⋅⋅Cl- interactions, which is accompanied by a reduction of the charge-transfer absorption band. Importantly, little to no optical response was induced by addition of bromide or iodide to the rotaxane, indicative of the size discriminative steric inaccessibility of the interlocked cavity to the larger halides, demonstrating the potential of using the mechanical bond effect as a potent strategy and tool in chloride-selective chemo-sensing applications in aqueous containing solvent environments.

Anion Binding to Ammonium and Guanidinium Hosts: Implications for the Reverse Hofmeister Effects Induced by Lysine and Arginine Residues

Anions have a profound effect on the properties of soluble proteins. Such Hofmeister effects have implications in biologics stability, protein aggregation, amyloidogenesis, and crystallization. However, the interplay between the important noncovalent interactions (NCIs) responsible for Hofmeister effects is poorly understood. To contribute to improving this state of affairs, we report on the NCIs between anions and ammonium and guanidinium hosts 1 and 2, and the consequences of these. Specifically, we investigate the properties of cavitands designed to mimic two prime residues for anion-protein NCIs─lysines and arginines─and the solubility consequences of complex formation. Thus, we report NMR and ITC affinity studies, X-ray analysis, MD simulations, and anion-induced critical precipitation concentrations. Our findings emphasize the multitude of NCIs that guanidiniums can form and how this repertoire qualitatively surpasses that of ammoniums. Additionally, our studies demonstrate the ease by which anions can dispense with a fraction of their hydration-shell waters, rearrange those that remain, and form direct NCIs with the hosts. This raises many questions concerning how solvent shell plasticity varies as a function of anion, how the energetics of this impact the different NCIs between anions and ammoniums/guanidiniums, and how this affects the aggregation of solutes at high anion concentrations.

Voltammetric Sensing of Chloride Based on a Redox-Active Complex: A Terpyridine-Co(II)-Dipyrromethene Functionalized Anion Receptor Deposited on a Gold Electrode

A redox-active complex containing Co(II) connected to a terpyridine (TPY) and dipyrromethene functionalized anion receptor (DPM-AR) was created on a gold electrode surface. This host-guest supramolecular system based on a redox-active layer was used for voltammetric detection of chloride anions in aqueous solutions. The sensing mechanism was based on the changes in the redox activity of the complex observed upon binding of the anion to the receptor. The electron transfer coefficient (α) and electron transfer rate constant (k0) for the modified gold electrodes were calculated based on Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) experiments results. On the other hand, the sensing abilities were examined using Square Wave Voltammetry (SWV). More importantly, the anion receptor was selective to chloride, resulting in the highest change in Co(II) current intensity and allowing to distinguish chloride, sulfate and bromide. The proposed system displayed the highest sensitivity to Cl- with a limit of detection of 0.50 fM. The order of selectivity was: Cl- > SO42- > Br-, which was confirmed by the binding constants (K) and reaction coupling efficiencies (RCE).

Phenylboronic Acid Functionalized Calix[4]pyrrole-Based Solid-State Supramolecular Electrolyte

Solid-state polymer electrolytes (SPEs) suffer from the low ionic conductivity and poor capability of suppressing lithium (Li) dendrites, which limits their utility in the preparation of all solid-state Li-metal batteries (LMBs). It is reported here a flexible solid supramolecular electrolyte that incorporates a new anion capture agent, namely a phenylboronic acid functionalized calix[4]pyrrole (C4P), into a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) matrix. The resulting solid-state supramolecular electrolyte demonstrates high ionic conductivity (1.9 × 10-3  S cm-1 at 60 °C) and a high Li+ transference number (t Li + ${t}_{{\mathrm{Li}}^{\mathrm{ + }}}$  = 0.70). Furthermore, the assembled Li|C4P-PEO-LiTFSI|LiFePO4 cell allows for stable cycling over 1200 cycles at 1 C at 60 °C, as well as good rate performance. The favorable performance of the C4P-PEO-LiTFSI SPE leads to suggest it can prove useful in the creation of high energy density solid-state LMBs.

Anion-templated synthesis of a switchable fluorescent [2]catenane with sulfate sensing capability

Anion templation strategies have facilitated the synthesis of various catenane and rotaxane hosts capable of strong and selective binding of anions in competitive solvents. However, this approach has primarily relied on positively charged precursors, limiting the structural diversity and the range of potential applications of the anion-templated mechanically interlocked molecules. Here we demonstrate the synthesis of a rare electroneutral [2]catenane using a powerful, doubly charged sulfate template and a complementary diamidocarbazole-based hydrogen bonding precursor. Owing to the unique three-dimensional hydrogen bonding cavity and the embedded carbazole fluorophores, the resulting catenane receptor functions as a sensitive fluorescent turn-ON sensor for the highly hydrophilic sulfate, even in the presence of a large excess of water. Importantly, the [2]catenane exhibits enhanced binding affinity and selectivity for sulfate over its parent macrocycle and other acyclic diamidocarbazole-based receptors. We demonstrate also, for the first time, that the co-conformation of the catenane may be controlled by reversible acid/base induced protonation and deprotonation of the anionic template, SO42-. This approach pioneers a new strategy to induce molecular motion of interlocked components using switchable anionic templates.

Recent applications of organic cages in sensing and separation processes in solution

Organic cages are three-dimensional polycyclic compounds of great interest in the scientific community due to their unique features, which generally include simple synthesis based on the dynamic covalent chemistry strategies, structural tunability and high selectivity. In this feature article, we present the advances over the last ten years in the application of organic cages as chemosensors or components in chemosensing devices for the determination of analytes (pollutants, analytes of biological interest) in complex aqueous media including wine, fruit juice, urine. Details on the recent applications of organic cages as selective (back-)extractants or masking agents for potential applications in relevant separation processes, such as the plutonium and uranium recovery by extraction, are also provided. Over the last ten years, organic cages with permanent porosity in the liquid and solid states have been highly appreciated as porous materials able to discriminate molecules of different sizes. These features, combined with good solvent processability and film-forming tendency, have proved useful in the fabrication of membranes for gas separation, solvent nanofiltration and water remediation processes. An overview of the recent applications of organic cages in membrane separation technologies is given.

2,4,5,7-Tetranitrofluorenone Oximate for the Naked-Eye Detection of H-Bond Donors and the Chiroptical Sensing of Enantiopure Reagents

Hydrogen bonding greatly influences rates and equilibrium positions of chemical reactions, conformations, and sometimes even stereochemistry. This study reports on tetranitrofluorenone oximate, a novel dye capable of naked-eye detection of hydrogen-bond donating species (HBDs) and of rapid determination of H-bond donation strength by hypsochromic shift monitoring. In addition, the molecule possesses atropisomeric conformations, of M and P configuration, as evidenced in solid and solution state studies by X-ray diffraction and electronic circular dichroism (ECD), respectively. In the latter case, enantiopure bis-thioureas were the most effective HBDs to promote a chiral induction (diastereoselective recognition, Pfeiffer effect); the ECD results being rationalized by time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations. Based on these experiments, bis-thioureas were used as chiral reagents in asymmetric 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions of structurally-related nitrones; the ECD sensing of the stereoinduction between bis-thioureas and the oximate serving as an indirect method of selection of the most effective HBD for asymmetric synthesis.

A Carbazole-1,8-Disulfonamide-Derived Cryptand Receptor for Anion Recognition

A novel cryptand-like anion receptor 1 was synthesized in reasonable yield by a one-step condensation reaction. The UV-vis spectroscopic titrations indicated that cryptand 1 bound AcO- in preference to other monovalent anions (including its competing F- and H2PO4-) in CH3CN, generating a 1:1 binding complex with Ka = 51,000 M-1. Moreover, the crystal structures revealed that the acetate ion was encapsulated inside the cryptand's cavity in a 1:1 manner, through multiple N-H···O hydrogen bonds (although having two different crystal forms).

Gas Permeation through Mechanically Resistant Self-Standing Membranes of a Neat Amorphous Organic Cage

The synthesis and characterization of a novel film-forming organic cage and of its smaller analogue are here described. While the small cage produced single crystals suitable for X-ray diffraction studies, the large one was isolated as a dense film. Due to its remarkable film-forming properties, this latter cage could be solution processed into transparent thin-layer films and mechanically stable dense self-standing membranes of controllable thickness. Thanks to these peculiar features, the membranes were also successfully tested for gas permeation, reporting a behavior similar to that found with stiff glassy polymers such as polymers of intrinsic microporosity or polyimides. Given the growing interest in the development of molecular-based membranes, for example for separation technologies and functional coatings, the properties of this organic cage were investigated by thorough analysis of their structural, thermal, mechanical and gas transport properties, and by detailed atomistic simulations.

Recent Advances in Organic Sensors for the Detection of Ag+ Ions: A Comprehensive Review (2019-2023)

Recently, organic sensors for the detection of Ag+ and other metal ions have experienced significant advancements. This is because there is a growing demand for reliable and sensitive tools to monitor various environmental pollutants. Organic sensors have O-, S-, and N-donor atoms, which can act as a ligand and coordinate with different metal ions, hence stabilizing them in a variety of oxidation states. This interaction gives colorimetric and fluorescence changes, which are used to monitor Ag+ and other metal ions. This comprehensive review highlights the latest developments in organic sensors for the recognition of Ag+. We present an in-depth analysis of the underlying principles and mechanisms governing Ag+ ion recognition. Various organic sensing platforms, such as fluorescent and colorimetric sensors, are discussed, shedding light on their unique advantages and limitations. Special attention is given to the diverse range of organic ligands, receptors, and functional materials used to achieve high sensitivity, selectivity, and quantification accuracy. Additionally, we delve into real-world applications of organic sensors for Ag+ ion detection, examining their performance in complex matrices such as biological, environmental, industrial and agricultural matrices.

Expedient synthesis and luminescence sensing of the inositol pyrophosphate cellular messenger 5-PP-InsP5

Inositol pyrophosphates are important biomolecules associated with apoptosis, cell growth and kinase regulation, yet their exact biological roles are still emerging and probes do not exist for their selective detection. We report the first molecular probe for the selective and sensitive detection of the most abundant cellular inositol pyrophosphate 5-PP-InsP5, as well as an efficient new synthesis. The probe is based on a macrocyclic Eu(iii) complex bearing two quinoline arms providing a free coordination site at the Eu(iii) metal centre. Bidentate binding of the pyrophosphate group of 5-PP-InsP5 to the Eu(iii) ion is proposed, supported by DFT calculations, giving rise to a selective enhancement in Eu(iii) emission intensity and lifetime. We demonstrate the use of time-resolved luminescence as a bioassay tool for monitoring enzymatic processes in which 5-PP-InsP5 is consumed. Our probe offers a potential screening methodology to identify drug-like compounds that modulate the activity of enzymes of inositol pyrophosphate metabolism.

A New Family of Macrocyclic Polyamino Biphenolic Ligands: Acid-Base Study, Zn(II) Coordination and Glyphosate/AMPA Binding

In this study, the ligands 23,24-dihydroxy-3,6,9,12-tetraazatricyclo[17.3.1.1(14,18)]eicosatetra-1(23),14,16,18(24),19,21-hexaene, L1, and 26,27-dihidroxy-3,6,9,12,15-pentaazatricyclo[20.3.1.1(17,21)]eicosaepta-1(26),17,19,21(27),22,24-hexaene, L2, were synthesized: they represent a new class of molecules containing a biphenol unit inserted into a macrocyclic polyamine fragment. The previously synthesized L2 is obtained herein with a more advantageous procedure. The acid-base and Zn(II)-binding properties of L1 and L2 were investigated through potentiometric, UV-Vis, and fluorescence studies, revealing their possible use as chemosensors of H⁺ and Zn(II). The new peculiar design of L1 and L2 afforded the formation in an aqueous solution of stable Zn(II) mono (LogK 12.14 and 12.98 for L1 and L2, respectively) and dinuclear (LogK 10.16 for L2) complexes, which can be in turn exploited as metallo-receptors for the binding of external guests, such as the popular herbicide glyphosate (N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine, PMG) and its primary metabolite, the aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA). Potentiometric studies revealed that PMG forms more stable complexes than AMPA with both L1- and L2-Zn(II) complexes, moreover PMG showed higher affinity for L2 than for L1. Fluorescence studies showed instead that the L1-Zn(II) complex could signal the presence of AMPA through a partial quenching of the fluorescence emission. These studies unveiled therefore the utility of polyamino-phenolic ligands in the design of promising metallo-receptors for elusive environmental targets.

Selective Luminescence Turn-On-Based Sensing of Phosphate in the Presence of Other Interfering Anions Using a Heterobimetallic (3d-4d) MOF with an Acidic Pocket

A luminescent metal-organic framework with the molecular formula [YMn_1.5(C₇N₁H₃O₅)₃(H₂O)₆]·11H₂O, 1 {where C₇N₁H₃O₅ = chelidamate}, was synthesized by a hydrothermal method by employing chelidamic acid as an organic ligand and Y(III) and Mn(II) as metal ions. A two-dimensional heterobimetallic structure with phenolic hydroxyl-functionalized pockets was revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of compound 1. PXRD, TGA, IR, BET analysis, and UV-vis spectroscopy were used for the thorough characterization of compound 1. Upon excitation at 280 nm, compound 1 shows bright blue emission, which was utilized for the selective and sensitive turn-on detection of the PO₄^3- ion. Based on Bronsted-Lowry acid-base interactions, the photoluminescence of compound 1 was enhanced in the presence of very low concentrations of the aforementioned anion. The mechanism behind the detection of the phosphate ion has been explored in detail. It was seen that the PO₄^3- anion entered the hydroxyl-functionalized pockets of compound 1 and stabilized the aromatic portion of compound 1 via molecular-level interactions through acid-base interactions. These molecular-level interactions are responsible for the enhancement of the photoluminescence intensity of compound 1 after the incorporation of phosphate ions by reducing the nonradiative transitions. These phenomena were also confirmed by time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) measurement, which shows that the excited-state lifetime increased with the increase in addition of phosphate anions. The calculated limit of detection (LOD) of 1 was 19.55 ppb for phosphate (PO₄^3-), which was significantly lesser than the recommended level for the PO₄^3-anion toward the human body. The luminescence enhancement coefficient, K_SV, value was also much higher than those of other reported metal-organic frameworks.

Turn-on fluorescent capsule for selective fluoride detection and water purification

It has been a long-standing challenge to develop organic molecular capsules for selective anion binding in water. Here, selective recognition of aqueous fluoride was achieved through triple protonation of a hemicryptophane (L), which is composed of a fluorescent cyclotriveratrylene (CTV) cap and tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (tren) as the anion binding site. Fluoride encapsulation by [3H-L]³⁺ was evidenced by ¹H NMR, ¹⁹F NMR, LC-MS, and X-ray crystallography. In addition, [3H-L]³⁺ exhibited a 'turn-on' fluorescence signal (λ _em = 324 nm) upon fluoride addition. An apparent association constant K _A = (7.5 ± 0.4) × 10⁴ M^-1 and a detection limit of 570 nM fluoride were extracted from the fluorescence titration experiments in citrate buffer at pH 4.1. To the best of our knowledge, [3H-L]³⁺ is the first example of a metal-free molecular capsule that reports on fluoride binding in purely aqueous solutions with a fluorescence response. Finally, the protonated capsule was supported on silica gel, which enabled adsorptive removal of stoichiometric fluoride from water and highlights real-world applications of this organic host-guest chemistry.

Probing Intermolecular H-Bonding Interactions in Cyanuric Acid Networks: Quenching of the N K-Edge Sigma Resonances

The electronic characterization of the cyanuric acid both in gas phase and when embedded within an H-bonded scheme forming a monolayer on the Au(111) surface has been performed by means of X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Near Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. The experimental spectra at the N, O, and C K-edges have been assigned with the support of DFT calculations, and the combination between theory and experiment has allowed to us investigate the effect of the H-bonding intermolecular interaction on the spectra. In particular, the H-bond formation in the monolayer leads to a quenching of the N 1s NEXAFS resonances associated with transitions to the sigma empty orbitals localized on the N–H portion of the imide group. On the other hand, the π* empty states remain substantially unperturbed. From a computational point of view, it has been shown that the DFT-TP scheme is not able to describe the N 1s NEXAFS spectra of these systems, and the configuration mixing has to be included, through the TDDFT approach in conjunction with the range-separated XC CAM-B3LYP functional, to obtain a correct reproduction of the N 1s core spectra.

Efficient fluorescent recognition of ATP/GTP by a water-soluble bisquinolinium pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide compound. Crystal structures, spectroscopic studies and interaction mode with DNA

The new dicationic pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide-based compound 1 bearing two N-alkylquinolinium units was synthesized, structurally determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and studied in-depth as a fluorescent receptor for nucleotides and inorganic phosphorylated anions in pure water. The addition of nucleotides to 1 at pH = 7.0 quenches its blue emission with a selective affinity towards adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) and guanosine 5'-tripohosphate (GTP) over other nucleotides such CTP, UTP, ADP, AMP, dicarboxylates and inorganic anions. On the basis of the spectroscopic tools (1H, 31P NMR, UV-vis, fluorescence), MS measurements and DFT calculations, receptor 1 binds ATP with high affinity (log K = 5.04) through the simultaneous formation of strong hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions between the adenosine fragment and quinolinium ring with binding energy calculated in 8.7 kcal mol-1. High affinity for ATP/GTP is attributed to the high acidity of amides and preorganized rigid structure of 1. Receptor 1 is an order of magnitude more selective for ATP than GTP. An efficient photoinduced electron transfer quenching mechanism with simultaneous receptor-ATP complexation in both the excited and ground states is proposed. Additionally, multiple spectroscopic studies and molecular dynamics simulations showed that 1 can intercalate into DNA base pairs.

Schiff Base Aggregation-Induced Emission Luminogens for Sensing Applications: A Review

Fluorescence sensing can not only identify a target substrate qualitatively but also achieve the purpose of quantitative detection through the change of the fluorescence signal. It has the advantages of immense sensitivity, rapid response, and excellent selectivity. The proposed aggregation-induced emission (AIE) concept solves the problem of the fluorescence of traditional fluorescent molecules becoming weak or quenched in high concentration or aggregated state conditions. Schiff base fluorescent probes have the advantages of simple synthesis, low toxicity, and easy design. They are often used for the detection of various substances. In this review we cover late developments in Schiff base compounds with AIE characteristics working as fluorescence sensors.

Calix[4]pyrrole-Based Azo-Bridged Porous Organic Polymer for Bromine Capture

The toxicity, corrosiveness, and volatility of elemental bromine presents challenges for its safe storage and transportation. Purification from other halogens is also difficult. Here, we report an easy-to-prepare calix[4]pyrrole-based azo-bridged porous organic polymer (C4P-POP) that supports efficient bromine capture. C4P-POP was found to capture bromine as a vapor and from a cyclohexane source phase with maximum uptake capacities of 3.6 and 3.4 g·g^-1, respectively. Flow-through adsorption experiments revealed that C4P-POP removes 80% of the bromine from a 4.0 mM cyclohexane solution at a flow rate of 45 mL·h^-1. C4P-POP also allowed the selective capture of bromine from a 1:1 mixture of bromine and iodine in cyclohexane.

Modulation of the Naked‐Eye and Fluorescence Color of a Protonated Boron‐Doped Thiazolothiazole by Anion‐Dependent Hydrogen Bonding

The reaction of a cyclic alkyl(amino)carbene (CAAC)‐stabilized thiazaborolo[5,4‐d]thiazaborole (TzbTzb) with strong Brønsted acids, such as HCl, HOTf (Tf=O₂SCF₃) and [H(OEt₂)₂][BAr^F₄] (Ar^F=3,5‐(CF₃)₂C₆H₃), results in the protonation of both TzbTzb nitrogen atoms. In each case X‐ray crystallographic data show coordination of the counteranions (Cl⁻, OTf⁻, BAr^F₄⁻) or solvent molecules (OEt₂) to the doubly protonated fused heterocycle via hydrogen‐bonding interactions, the strength of which strongly influences the ¹H NMR shift of the NH protons, enabling tuning of both the visible (yellow to red) and fluorescence (green to red) colors of these salts. DFT calculations reveal that the hydrogen bonding of the counteranion or solvent to the protonated nitrogen centers affects the intramolecular TzbTzb‐to‐CAAC charge transfer character involved in the S₀→S₁ transition, ultimately enabling fine‐tuning of their absorption and emission spectral features.

Nonplanar porphyrins: synthesis, properties, and unique functionalities

Porphyrins are variously substituted tetrapyrrolic macrocycles, with wide-ranging biological and chemical applications derived from metal chelation in the core and the 18π aromatic surface. Under suitable conditions, the porphyrin framework can deform significantly from regular planar shape, owing to steric overload on the porphyrin periphery or steric repulsion in the core, among other structure modulation strategies. Adopting this nonplanar porphyrin architecture allows guest molecules to interact directly with an exposed core, with guest-responsive and photoactive electronic states of the porphyrin allowing energy, information, atom and electron transfer within and between these species. This functionality can be incorporated and tuned by decoration of functional groups and electronic modifications, with individual deformation profiles adapted to specific key sensing and catalysis applications. Nonplanar porphyrins are assisting breakthroughs in molecular recognition, organo- and photoredox catalysis; simultaneously bio-inspired and distinctly synthetic, these molecules offer a new dimension in shape-responsive host-guest chemistry. In this review, we have summarized the synthetic methods and design aspects of nonplanar porphyrin formation, key properties, structure and functionality of the nonplanar aromatic framework, and the scope and utility of this emerging class towards outstanding scientific, industrial and environmental issues.

A Benzimidazolium-Based Organic Cage with Antimicrobial Activity

Considering the wide interest in (benz)imidazolium-based drugs, we here report our study on a benzimidazolium-based organic cage as potential antimicrobial and antifungal agent. Cytotoxicity studies on a human derived cell line, SH-SY5Y, showed that the cage is not cytotoxic at all at the investigated concentrations. Anion binding studies demonstrated that the cage can bind anions (chloride and nitrate, in particular) both in organic solvent and 20%v D2O/CD3CN mixture. The cage was also tested as anionophore, showing a weak but measurable transport of chloride and nitrate across LUVs vesicles. Nonetheless, the compounds have antimicrobial activity towards Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive bacteria). This is probably the first organic cage studied as anionophore and antimicrobial agent.

Imidazolium-Modified Bispyrene-Based Fluorescent Aggregates for Discrimination of Multiple Anions in Aqueous Solution

A great number of anions exist in biological systems and natural environment, and are highly relevant to human health and environment quality. It is necessary to develop simple and effective sensors to differentiate and identify those similar or different anions. Here, an imidazolium-modified bispyrene-based fluorescent amphiphilic probe DPyDIM was synthesized and its aggregates were applied to detect and discriminate various anions. The fluorescent aggregates exhibit ratiometric responses to different types of anions. Moreover, the ratiometric responses to different types of anions are featured with multiple-wavelength cross-reactivity. The collection of fluorescence variation at four typical wavelengths can generate distinct recognition patterns to specific anions. The heat map and principal component analysis results verify that this single fluorescent sensor system can effectively and sensitively identify 16 kinds of anions that belong to phosphorus-containing, sulfur-containing anions, and anionic surfactants. The cross-reactive sensing of the amphiphilic fluorescent aggregates was attributed to the different influences on the aggregation behaviors of the probes by different anions. The present work provides a promising strategy for effective detection and discrimination of multiple anions by employing dynamic fluorescent aggregates as a sensing platform.

Dynamic Covalent Self-Assembly of Chloride- and Ion-Pair-Templated Cryptates

While supramolecular hosts capable of binding and transporting anions and ion pairs are now widely available, self‐assembled architectures are still rare, even though they offer an inherent mechanism for the release of the guest ion(s). In this work, we report the dynamic covalent self‐assembly of tripodal, urea‐based anion cryptates that are held together by two orthoester bridgeheads. These hosts exhibit affinity for anions such as Cl⁻, Br⁻ or I⁻ in the moderate range that is typically advantageous for applications in membrane transport. In unprecedented experiments, we were able to dissociate the Cs⋅Cl ion pair by simultaneously assembling suitably sized orthoester hosts around the Cs⁺ and the Cl⁻ ion.

Halogen bonding and chalcogen bonding mediated sensing

Sigma-hole interactions, in particular halogen bonding (XB) and chalcogen bonding (ChB), have become indispensable tools in supramolecular chemistry, with wide-ranging applications in crystal engineering, catalysis and materials chemistry as well as anion recognition, transport and sensing. The latter has very rapidly developed in recent years and is becoming a mature research area in its own right. This can be attributed to the numerous advantages sigma-hole interactions imbue in sensor design, in particular high degrees of selectivity, sensitivity and the capability for sensing in aqueous media. Herein, we provide the first detailed overview of all developments in the field of XB and ChB mediated sensing, in particular the detection of anions but also neutral (gaseous) Lewis bases. This includes a wide range of optical colorimetric and luminescent sensors as well as an array of electrochemical sensors, most notably redox-active host systems. In addition, we discuss a range of other sensor designs, including capacitive sensors and chemiresistors, and provide a detailed overview and outlook for future fundamental developments in the field. Importantly the sensing concepts and methodologies described herein for the XB and ChB mediated sensing of anions, are generically applicable for the development of supramolecular receptors and sensors in general, including those for cations and neutral molecules employing a wide array of non-covalent interactions. As such we believe this review to be a useful guide to both the supramolecular and general chemistry community with interests in the fields of host-guest recognition and small molecule sensing. Moreover, we also highlight the need for a broader integration of supramolecular chemistry, analytical chemistry, synthetic chemistry and materials science in the development of the next generation of potent sensors.

Anion-Sensing Properties of Cyclopentaphenylalanine

Cyclic pentaphenylalanine was studied as an efficient anion sensor for halides, thiocyanate and oxoanions in acetonitrile and methanol. Stability constants of the corresponding complexes were determined by means of fluorimetric, spectrophotometric, ¹H NMR, and microcalorimetric titrations. A detailed structural overview of receptor–anion complexes was obtained by classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The results of ¹H NMR and MD studies indicated that the bound anions were coordinated by the amide groups of cyclopeptide, as expected. Circular dichroism (CD) titrations were also carried out in acetonitrile. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of the detection of anion binding by cyclopeptide using CD spectroscopy. The CD spectra were calculated from the structures obtained by MD simulations and were qualitatively in agreement with the experimental data. The stoichiometry of almost all complexes was 1:1 (receptor:anion), except for dihydrogen phosphate where the binding of dihydrogen phosphate dimer was observed in acetonitrile. The affinity of the cyclopeptide receptor was correlated with the structure of anion coordination sphere, as well as with the solvation properties of the examined solvents.

Preorganized Homochiral Pyrrole-Based Receptors That Display Enantioselective Anion Binding

Herein, a new scaffold for anion recognition based on a tripodal tris(pyrrolamide) motif is presented. The receptors were able to bind to a variety of anions with high affinity. Using density functional theory methods, the three-dimensional geometry of the receptor-anion complex was calculated. These calculations show that the receptors bind anions via a preorganized cavity of amide and pyrrole hydrogen bond donor groups. Based on these findings, homochiral tris(pyrrolamide) receptors were prepared, which produced as much as a 1.6-fold greater affinity for (S)-(+)-mandelate over (R)-(-)-mandelate, demonstrating the ability to differentiate between these enantiomeric anions. The interaction of (S)-(+)-mandelate and (R)-(-)-mandelate within the homochiral receptor was examined by solution NMR spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. These findings indicate that the preorganized positioning of the pyrrole groups and subsequent sterics allows to differentiate between the stereoisomeric anions.

Fluorescence "Turn-Off" and Colorimetric Sensor for Fe2+, Fe3+, and Cu2+ Ions Based on a 2,5,7-Triarylimidazopyridine Scaffold

Two cyanoimidazopyridine-based sensors (SS1 and SS2) were explored for the colorimetric and fluorometric detection of Fe²⁺, Fe³⁺, and Cu²⁺ ions in the semi-aqueous medium. The "turn-off" fluorescence response of both sensors to these ions was due to the restriction in internal charge transfer. Job's plot and semi-empirical calculations revealed that SS1 and SS2 complexed with Cu²⁺ ions in a 1:1 ratio and Fe^2+/3+ ions in a 2:1 ratio, respectively. The sensors were found to have high binding constant (K _a) values and low detection limit values. FMO analysis using the semi-empirical quantum mechanics method revealed the decrease in energy gap after complexation with metal ions. Sensor-coated filter paper strips were prepared and analyzed, where the color changes in the strips could be utilized for the real-time detection of Fe²⁺, Fe³⁺, and Cu²⁺ ions.

Red-Emitting Polymerizable Guanidinium Dyes as Fluorescent Probes in Molecularly Imprinted Polymers for Glyphosate Detection

The development of methodologies to sense glyphosate has gained momentum due to its toxicological and ecotoxicological effects. In this work, a red-emitting and polymerizable guanidinium benzoxadiazole probe was developed for the fluorescence detection of glyphosate. The interaction of the fluorescent probe and the tetrabutylammonium salt of glyphosate was studied via UV/vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy in chloroform and acetonitrile. The selective recognition of glyphosate was achieved by preparing molecularly imprinted polymers, able to discriminate against other common herbicides such as 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and 3,6-dichloro-2-methoxybenzoic acid (dicamba), as thin layers on submicron silica particles. The limits of detection of 4.8 µM and 0.6 µM were obtained for the sensing of glyphosate in chloroform and acetonitrile, respectively. The reported system shows promise for future application in the sensing of glyphosate through further optimization of the dye and the implementation of a biphasic assay with water/organic solvent mixtures for sensing in aqueous environmental samples.

Anion-Responsive Fluorescent Supramolecular Gels

Three novel bis-urea fluorescent low-molecular-weight gelators (LMWGs) based on the tetraethyl diphenylmethane spacer—namely, L1, L2, and L3, bearing indole, dansyl, and quinoline units as fluorogenic fragments, respectively, are able to form gel in different solvents. L2 and L3 gel in apolar solvents such as chlorobenzene and nitrobenzene. Gelator L1 is able to gel in the polar solvent mixture DMSO/H₂O (H₂O 15% v/v). This allowed the study of gel formation in the presence of anions as a third component. An interesting anion-dependent gel formation was observed with fluoride and benzoate inhibiting the gelation process and H₂PO₄⁻, thus causing a delay of 24 h in the gel formation. The interaction of L1 with the anions in solution was clarified by ¹H-NMR titrations and the differences in the cooperativity of the two types of NH H-bond donor groups (one indole NH and two urea NHs) on L1 when binding BzO⁻ or H₂PO₄⁻ were taken into account to explain the inhibition of the gelation in the presence of BzO⁻. DFT calculations corroborate this hypothesis and, more importantly, demonstrate considering a trimeric model of the L1 gel that BzO⁻ favours its disruption into monomers inhibiting the gel formation.

Sterically demanding macrocyclic Eu(iii) complexes for selective recognition of phosphate and real-time monitoring of enzymatically generated adenosine monophosphate

The design of molecular receptors that bind and sense anions in biologically relevant aqueous solutions is a key challenge in supramolecular chemistry. The recognition of inorganic phosphate is particularly challenging because of its high hydration energy and pH dependent speciation. Adenosine monophosphate (AMP) represents a valuable but elusive target for supramolecular detection because of its structural similarity to the more negatively charged anions, ATP and ADP. We report two new macrocyclic Eu(iii) receptors capable of selectively sensing inorganic phosphate and AMP in water. The receptors contain a sterically demanding 8-(benzyloxy)quinoline pendant arm that coordinates to the metal centre, creating a binding pocket suitable for phosphate and AMP, whilst excluding potentially interfering chelating anions, in particular ATP, bicarbonate and lactate. The sensing selectivity of our Eu(iii) receptors follows the order AMP > ADP > ATP, which represents a reversal of the order of selectivity observed for most reported nucleoside phosphate receptors. We have exploited the unique host–guest induced changes in emission intensity and lifetime for the detection of inorganic phosphate in human serum samples, and for monitoring the enzymatic production of AMP in real-time.

We present two new europium-based anion receptors that selectively bind to inorganic phosphate and AMP in aqueous media. Their sensing selectivity follows the order AMP > ADP > ATP, representing a reversal of the selectivity order observed for most nucleoside phosphate receptors.

2-(4-(Dimethylamino)phenyl)-3,3-difluoro-4,6-diphenyl-3,4-dihydro-1,2,4,5,3-tetrazaborinin-2-ium-3-ide

Reaction of 1-(4-(dimethylamino)phenyl)-3,5-diphenylformazane with boron trifluoride diethyl etherate (5 equiv) in the presence of triethylamine (3 equiv) in toluene medium gave “boratetrazine”—2-(4-(dimethylamino)phenyl)-3,3-difluoro-4,6-diphenyl-3,4-dihydro -1,2,4,5,3-tetrazaborinin-2-ium-3-ide in a 58% yield.

Fluorescence Recognition of Anions Using a Heteroditopic Receptor: Homogenous and Two-Phase Sensing

In contrast to monotopic receptor 3, the anthracene functionalized squaramide dual-host receptor 1 is capable of selectively extracting sulfate salts, as was evidenced unambiguously by DOSY, mass spectrometry, fluorescent and ion chromatography measurements. The receptors were investigated in terms of anion and ion pair binding using the UV-vis and 1H NMR titrations method in acetonitrile. The reference anion receptor 3, lacking a crown ether unit, was found to lose the enhancement in anion binding induced by the presence of cations. Besides the ability to bind anions in an enhanced manner exhibited by ion pair receptors 2 and 4, changing the 1-aminoanthracene substituent resulted in their exhibiting a lower anion affinity than receptor 1. By using receptor 1 and adjusting the water content in organic phase it was possible to selectively detect sulfates both by "turn-off" and "turn-on" fluorescence, and to do so homogenously and under interfacial conditions. Such properties of receptor 1 have allowed the development of a new type of sensor capable of recognizing and extracting potassium sulfate from the aqueous medium across a phase boundary, resulting in an appropriate fluorescent response in the organic solution.

Nonporous Adaptive Calix[4]pyrrole Crystals for Polar Compound Separations

The use of molecular crystalline materials for the separation and purification of chemical raw materials, particularly polar compounds with similar physical and chemical properties, represents an ongoing challenge. This is particularly true for volatile feedstocks that form binary azeotropes. Here we report a new cavity-extended version of calix[4]pyrrole (C4P) that readily forms nonporous adaptive crystals (NACs). These C4P-based NACs allow pyridine to be separated from toluene/pyridine mixtures with nearly 100% purity, as well as the removal of 1,4-dioxane from 1,4-dioxane/water mixtures with high adsorption capacity. Removal of the polar guest (pyridine or 1,4-dioxane) from the guest-loaded NACs by heating under vacuum produces the guest-free crystalline form. In the case of both guests, the C4P material could be reused as demonstrated through 10 uptake and release cycles without apparent performance loss.
