Ferrocenyl-triazole complexes and their use in heavy metal cation sensing

Complexes tris((1-ferrocenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methyl)amine (3), bis((1-ferrocenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methyl)amine (6), bis((1-ferrocenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methyl)ether (7), and 1-ferrocenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methanamine (9) were synthesized using the copper-catalyzed click reaction. Complexes 3, 6, 7, and 9 were characterized using NMR (1H and 13{1H}) and IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and mass spectrometry. Structures of 3, 7, and 9 in the solid state were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It was found that the triazole rings were planar and slightly twisted with respect to the cyclopentadienyl groups attached to them. Chains and 3D network structures were observed due to the presence of π⋯π and C-H⋯N interactions between the cyclopentadienyl and triazole ligands. A reversible redox behavior of the Fc groups between 239 and 257 mV with multicycle stability was characteristic for all the compounds, revealing that the electrochemically generated species Fc+ remained soluble in dichloromethane. Electrochemical sensor tests demonstrated the applicability of all the complexes to enhance the quantification sensing behavior of the screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) toward Cd2+, Pb2+, and Cu2+ ions.

Electrochemical C-H Mono-/Multi-Bromination Regulation of N-Sulfonylanilines on a Cost-Effective Carbon Fiber Electrode and Its Prospective Electroactive Molecule Screening

Electrochemical C-H mono/multi-bromination regulation of N-sulfonylanilines on the cost-effective CF electrode is described. This reaction proceeds smoothly under mild conditions with a broad substrate scope, affording diverse mono/multi-brominated anilines in moderate to good yields. Mechanism study reveals that this transformation involves anodic oxidation, aromatic electrophilic substitution, and deprotonation. Preliminary electroactive molecule screening results in its prospective application in electroactive MBs for electrochemical biosensors.

The Renaissance of Ferrocene-Based Electrocatalysts: Properties, Synthesis Strategies, and Applications

The fascinating electrochemical properties of the redox-active compound ferrocene have inspired researchers across the globe to develop ferrocene-based electrocatalysts for a wide variety of applications. Advantages including excellent chemical and thermal stability, solubility in organic solvents, a pair of stable redox states, rapid electron transfer, and nontoxic nature improve its utility in various electrochemical applications. The use of ferrocene-based electrocatalysts enables control over the intrinsic properties and electroactive sites at the surface of the electrode to achieve specific electrochemical activities. Ferrocene and its derivatives can function as a potential redox medium that promotes electron transfer rates, thereby enhancing the reaction kinetics and electrochemical responses of the device. The outstanding electrocatalytic activity of ferrocene-based compounds at lower operating potentials enhances the specificity and sensitivity of reactions and also amplifies the response signals. Owing to their versatile redox chemistry and catalytic activities, ferrocene-based electrocatalysts are widely employed in various energy-related systems, molecular machines, and agricultural, biological, medicinal, and sensing applications. This review highlights the importance of ferrocene-based electrocatalysts, with emphasis on their properties, synthesis strategies for obtaining different ferrocene-based compounds, and their electrochemical applications.

Catalytic Undirected Meta-Selective C-H Borylation of Metallocenes

Metallocenes are privileged backbones in the fields of synthetic chemistry, catalysis, polymer science, etc. Direct C-H functionalization is undoubtedly the simplest approach for tuning the properties of metallocenes. However, owing to the presence of multiple identical C(sp2 )-H sites, this protocol often suffers from low reactivity and selectivity issues, especially for the regioselective synthesis of 1,3-difunctionalized metallocenes. Herein, an efficient iridium-catalyzed meta-selective C-H borylation of metallocenes is reported. With no need of preinstalled directing groups, this approach enables a rapid synthesis of various boronic esters based on benzoferrocenes, ferrocenes, ruthenocene, and related half sandwich complex. A broad range of electron-deficient and -rich functional groups are all compatible with the process. Notably, C-H borylation of benzoferrocenes takes place exclusively at the benzene ring, which is likely ascribed to the shielding effect of pentamethylcyclopentadiene. The synthetic utility is further demonstrated by easy scalability to gram quantities, the conversion of boron to heteroatoms including N3 , SePh, and OAc, as well as diverse cross-coupling reactions.

Fluorescent and chromogenic organic probes to detect group 10 metal ions: design strategies and sensing applications

Group 10 metals including Ni, Pd and Pt have been extensively applied in various essential aspects of human social life, material science, industrial manufactures, medicines and biology. The ionic forms of these metals are involved in several biologically important processes due to their strong binding capability towards different biomolecules. However, the mishandling or overuse of such metals has been linked to serious contamination of our ecological system, more specifically in soil and water bodies with acute consequences. Therefore, the detection of group 10 metal ions in biological as well as environmental samples is of huge significance from the human health point of view. Related to this, considerable efforts are underway to develop adequately efficient and facile methods to achieve their selective detection. Optical sensing of metal ions has gained increasing attention of researchers, particularly in the environmental and biological settings. Innovatively designed optical probes (fluorescent or colorimetric) are usually comprised of three basic components: an explicitly tailored receptor unit, a signalling unit and a clearly defined reporter unit. This review deals with the recent progress in the design and fabrication of fluorescent or colorimetric organic sensors for the detection of group 10 metal ions (Ni(II), Pd(II) and Pt(II)), with attention to the general aspects for design of such sensors.

Magnetically Induced Binary Ferrocene with Oxidized Iron

Ferrocene is perhaps the most popular and well-studied organometallic molecule, but our understanding of its structure and electronic properties has not changed for more than 70 years. In particular, all previous attempts of chemically oxidizing pure ferrocene by binding directly to the iron center have been unsuccessful, and no significant change in structure or magnetism has been reported. Using a metal organic framework host material, we were able to fundamentally change the electronic and magnetic structure of ferrocene to take on a never-before observed physically stretched/bent high-spin Fe(II) state, which readily accepts O2 from air, chemically oxidizing the iron from Fe(II) to Fe(III). We also show that the binding of oxygen is reversible through temperature swing experiments. Our analysis is based on combining Mößbauer spectroscopy, extended X-ray absorption fine structure, in situ infrared, SQUID, thermal gravimetric analysis, and energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy measurements with ab initio modeling.

Development of highly selective fluorescent ferrocenyl-iminopyridine chemosensor for biologically relevant Fe3

Design, synthesis, characterization, and ion detection studies of two ferrocene-appended Schiff bases namely N-(2-[ferrocenylamino]ethyl)-5-nitropyridin-2-amine (1) and ferrocenylamino-1H-imidazole-4-carboxamide (2) been reported. Both the chemosensors have been thoroughly characterized using Fourier transfer infrared, 1 H and 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance, high resolution mass spectrometry, and ultraviolet/visible (UV/visible) and fluorescence spectral techniques. Probes 1 and 2 were designed with the aim of appending the ferrocenyl group with pyridine ring having an amine substitution (for 1) and imidazole ring with an amide substitution (for 2). Interaction of these probes with a series of cations and anions was examined through UV/vis and fluorescence spectral techniques. Probe 2 exhibited an insignificant response towards anions and loss of selectivity for cations, whereas 1 displayed highly selective detection towards biologically important Fe3+ in 2:1 (probe:cation) stoichiometry. Notably, none of the cations and anions could interfere the selectivity of Fe3+ ensured by 1 in aqueous medium. The limit of detection for Fe3+ detection using 1 was determined to be 0.2 ppm. The results strongly suggest that 1 could find promising future application as a chemosensor for Fe3+ in biological systems for quantification and qualitative analysis.

Thermodynamic and voltammetric study on carnosine and ferrocenyl-carnosine

A potentiometric study on the interactions of L-carnosine (CAR) (2-[(3-aminopropanoyl)amino]-3-(1H-imidazol-5-yl)propanoic acid) with two toxic metal cations, Hg²⁺ and Cd²⁺, is reported here. The elucidation of the metal (M²⁺)-CAR interactions in aqueous solution highlighted the speciation model for each system, the dependence of the formation constants of the complex species on ionic strength (0.15 ≤ I/mol L^-1 ≤ 1) and temperature (288.15 ≤ T/K ≤ 310.15) and changes in enthalpy and entropy. The sequestering ability of CAR towards the two metal ions was quantified and compared with that with Pb²⁺, previously determined. Considering the complexing ability of CAR and its unclear electrochemical properties, a more electroactive derivative, the ferrocenyl-carnosine (FcCAR), was synthesized and its complexing ability was evaluated by UV-vis spectroscopy. FcCAR electrochemical properties were investigated by Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) and Differential Pulse Voltammetry (DPV) on Screen-Printed Electrodes (SPEs), to evaluate its sensing properties. Electrochemical responses in the presence of Hg²⁺ and Pb²⁺ have been shown to be promising for the electrochemical detection of these metal cations in aqueous environment.

The Phosphinate Group in the Formation of 2D Coordination Polymer with Sm(III) Nodes: X-ray Structural, Electrochemical and Mössbauer Study

A coordination polymer has been synthesized using ferrocene-based ligand-bearing phosphinic groups of 1,1'-ferrocene-diyl-bis(H-phosphinic acid)), and samarium (III). The coordination polymer's structure was studied by both single-crystal and powder XRD, TG, IR, and Raman analyses. For the first time, the Mössbauer effect studies were performed on ferrocenyl phosphinate and the polymer based on it. Additionally, the obtained polymer was studied by the method of cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry. It is shown that it has the most positive potential known among ferrocenyl phosphinate-based coordination polymers and metal-organic frameworks. Using the values of the oxidation potential, the polymer was oxidized and the ESR method verified the oxidized Fe(III) form in the solid state. Additionally, the effect of the size of the phosphorus atom substituent of the phosphinate group on the dimension of the resulting coordination compounds is shown.

Modeling Absolute Redox Potentials of Ferrocene in the Condensed Phase

Absolute thermodynamic quantities for critical chemical reactions are needed to determine the role of solvents and reactive environments in catalysis and electrocatalysis. Theoretical methods can provide such quantification but are often hindered by the innate complexity of electron correlation and dynamic relaxation of solvent environments. We present and validate a protocol for calculating the redox potentials of the ferrocene/ferrocenium redox pair in acetonitrile. Equation-of-motion and effective fragment potential (EFP) methods are used to characterize the adiabatic and vertical ionization potentials as well as the electron affinity processes. We benchmark molecular mechanics against the EFP model to show the differences in the ferrocene electronic polarizability in two redox states. Our best estimate of the redox potential (4.94 eV) agrees well with the experimental value (4.93 eV). This demonstrates the ability of modern computational methods to predict absolute redox potentials quantitatively and to quantify the correlation of dynamic effects, which underlie their origin.

Advanced Application of Planar Chiral Heterocyclic Ferrocenes

This manuscript is reviewing the superior catalytic activity and selectivity of ferrocene ligands in a wide range of reactions: reduction of ketones, hydrogenation of olefins, hydroboration, cycloaddition, enantioselective synthesis of biaryls, Tsuji–Trost allylation. Moreover, the correlation between a ligand structure and its catalytic activity is discussed in this review.

The design of fluorescein-ferrocene derivatives as HOCl-triggered turn-on fluorescent probes and anticancer prodrugs

Overexpressed HOCl in tumors can behave as an activator for imaging-guided precision therapy. Herein, a new kind of HOCl-activated molecular platform has been developed aiming at the integration of detection, imaging, and anticancer functions. The design strategy uses a five-membered heterocyclic ring to bridge the fluorescent fluorescein part (FL) and the anticancer ferrocene part (Fc). Three derivatives, namely FL-Fc, FL-NP-Fc and FL-TEG-Fc, were designed with different grafted chains on the fluorescein mother to modulate the hydrophilic and biocompatible capacity. In these molecular platforms, the ferrocene unit serves as the fluorescence emission quencher and masked prodrug. These three could respond to HOCl with good selectivity and sensitivity, showing a turn-on fluorescence signal and anticancer efficacy. FL-TEG-Fc with the highest sensitivity (6.5 × 10^-6 M) was successfully used for imaging endogenous HOCl in AGS cells, in which it presented strong toxicity IC₅₀ = 9.5 ± 0.3 μM. The mechanistic study revealed that the five-membered heterocyclic ring of FL-TEG-Fc was broken specifically and effectively by HOCl to release strongly fluorescent fluorescein and a bioactive ferrocene derivative; the obtained ferrocene derivative further generated cytotoxic ˙OH through a Fenton-like reaction. This study provides a potential theranostic strategy against HOCl-overexpressing cancers.

Recent Advances in Transition-Metal-Catalyzed C-H Functionalization of Ferrocene Amides

During the past decades, in synthetic organic chemistry, directing-group-assisted C-H functionalization is found to be a key tool for the expedient and site-selective construction of C-C and hybrid bonds. Among C-H functionalization of ferrocene derivatives, the directed group strategy is undoubtedly the most commonly used method. Compared to the other directing groups, ferrocene amides can be synthesized easily and are now recognized as one of the most efficient devices for the selective functionalization of certain positions because its metal centre permits fine, tuneable and reversible coordination. The family of amide directing groups mainly comprises monodentate and bidentate directing groups, which are categorized on the basis of coordination sites. In this review, various C-H bond functionalization reactions of ferrocene using amide directing groups are broadly discussed.

Ferrocene-Doped Polystyrene Nanoenzyme and DNAzyme Cocatalytic SERS Quantitative Assay of Ultratrace Pb2+

A new, stable and high-catalytic activity ferrocene-doped polystyrene nanosphere (PN_Fer) sol was prepared by the hydrogel procedure and characterized by electron microscopy and molecular spectroscopy. Results show that the nanosol exhibits excellent catalysis of the new indicator nanoreaction between AgNO₃ and sodium formate to generate nanosilver with strong surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS) and surface plasmon resonance absorption (Abs) trimode molecular spectral signals. This new nanocatalytic amplification trimode indicator reaction was coupled with the G-quadruplex DNAzyme catalytic amplification of Pb²⁺ aptamer to fabricate a new SERS quantitative/RRS/Abs assay platform for the determination of ultratrace amounts of Pb²⁺. The Pb²⁺ content in water samples was analyzed with satisfactory results.

Inorganic Ferrocene Analogue [Fe(P4)2]2

Inorganic metallocene derivatives containing only cyclo-P_n ligands have been targeted for more than 20 years, but their syntheses have never been achieved by pursuing the conventional route of using P₄ phosphorus except for the generation of [Ti(η⁵-P₅)₂]^2-. Herein, we report a facile one-step method for the synthesis of the homoleptic iron complex [Fe(P₄)₂]^2- by the Zintl-phase-type precursor KP. ³¹P NMR analyses indicate that upon dissolving the KP phase in ethylenediamine P₄^2- was generated only in the presence of 2,2,2-crypt. The amounts of cation-sequestering agents, the type of iron precursor, and their consuming ratio have a decisive impact on the yield of [Fe(P₄)₂]^2-. Both the Fe^II and the Fe^III precursors can oxidize P₄^2- to give a concomitant product [(P₇)Fe(P₄)]^3-, which can be partially inhibited by the addition of potassium to produce relatively pure crystalline [K(2,2,2-crypt)]₂[Fe(P₄)₂].

Magnetically induced ring currents in metallocenothiaporphyrins

The magnetically induced current-density susceptibility tensor (CDT) of the lowest singlet and triplet states of the metallocenothiaporphyrins, where the metal is V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Mo, Tc, Ru, or Rh, have been studied with the gauge-including magnetically induced currents (GIMIC) method. The compounds containing V, Mn, Co, Tc or Rh were studied as cations because the neutral molecules have an odd number of electrons. The calculations show that the aromatic nature of most of the studied molecules follows the Hückel and Baird rules of aromaticity. CDT calculations on the high-spin states of the neutral metallocenothiaporphyrins with V, Mn, Co, Tc or Rh also shows that these molecules follow a unified extended Hückel and Baird aromaticity orbital-count rule stating that molecules with an odd number of occupied conjugated valence orbitals are aromatic, whereas molecules with an even number of occupied conjugated orbitals are antiaromatic.

Assembly, structure and thermoelectric properties of 1,1′-dialkynylferrocene ‘hinges’

Dialkynylferrocenes exhibit attractive electronic and rotational features that make them ideal candidates for use in molecular electronic applications. However previous works have primarily focussed on single-molecule studies, with limited opportunities to translate these features into devices. In this report, we utilise a variety of techniques to examine both the geometric and electronic structure of a range of 1,1′-dialkynylferrocene molecules, as either single-molecules, or as self-assembled monolayers. Previous single molecule studies have shown that similar molecules can adopt an ‘open’ conformation. However, in this work, DFT calculations, STM-BJ experiments and AFM imaging reveal that these molecules prefer to occupy a ‘hairpin’ conformation, where both alkynes point towards the metal surface. Interestingly we find that only one of the terminal anchor groups binds to the surface, though both the presence and nature of the second alkyne affect the thermoelectric properties of these systems. First, the secondary alkyne acts to affect the position of the frontier molecular orbitals, leading to increases in the Seebeck coefficient. Secondly, theoretical calculations suggested that rotating the secondary alkyne away from the surface acts to modulate thermoelectric properties. This work represents the first of its kind to examine the assembly of dialkynylferrocenes, providing valuable information about both their structure and electronic properties, as well as unveiling new ways in which both of these properties can be controlled.

Dialkynylferrocenes are interesting candidates for molecular electronics. Herein, numerous experiments are applied to probe their properties both as single-molecules and in monolayers, demonstrating unique geometric and thermoelectric properties.

Fluorescent chemosensors containing redox-active ferrocene: a review

The redox-active ferrocene containing two cyclopentadienyl rings and iron was extensively employed in the field of sensing, catalysis, medicine, biotechnology etc., due to the structural stability, solubility in common solvents and easy structural modification to make a wide variety of ferrocene derivatives. The ferrocene moiety can be linked suitably with fluoro-chromogenic units and applied for the multichannel (fluorescent, chromogenic and redox) sensing of various bioactive and toxic analytes. This review was narrated to compile some important ferrocene based fluorescent chemosensors developed for the detection of metal ions, anions and neutral analytes. The analytical novelty and sensing mechanisms of the summarized chemosensors are discussed to open new scopes for future research.

Ferrocenylated 1,3,5-triphenylbenzenes for the electrochemical detection of various cations or anions

Three diverse 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene derivatives bearing three ferrocene units (Fc1-Fc3) were used for the construction of electrochemical sensors for the detection of various cations or anions. The obtained derivatives contained imine (Fc1 and Fc2) or amide bonds (Fc3) between 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene and ferrocene skeletons, which further influenced the ability of the as-synthesized ferrocenylated molecules to recognize cations (Cu(ii), Pb(ii), Cr(iii) and Fe(iii); compounds Fc1 and Fc2) or monovalent anions (Br-, I-, ClO4-, NO3-, CH3COO-, and H2PO4-; compound Fc3). In the case of cation recognition, differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) experiments revealed that the Fc1 receptor was characterized by much better sensitivity compared to the Fc2 receptor and the limit of detection (LOD) values ranged from 0.5 to 1.8 μM. Similarly, such very low LOD values (0.7-1.5 μM) were also found in the case of anion recognition by the Fc3 receptor. Importantly, the advantage of the tested Fc receptors is also their long-term stability (sensors were stable at least for 2 months).
