Adsorptive recovery of precious metals from aqueous solution using nanomaterials – A critical review

Engineered E. coli for Long-Term Oral Enzyme Delivery

Intestinal flora shows excellent affinity in the gut, and the adhesive property is borrowed for oral drug delivery. A facile strategy for bacteria engineering has been successfully developed by introducing metal-organic framework (MOF) mineralization. The MOF exoskeleton serves as an extendable platform for accommodating various cargoes with good Escherichia coli morphology maintained. The artificial exoskeleton surrounding E. coli is employed for encapsulating macromolecules as a therapeutic cargo, maintaining good bioactivity with high immobilization efficiency (60%) after systematic optimization of the MOF precursor. Leveraging the natural affinity of E. coli in the gut, the in-vivo tracking of MOF-engineered E. coli in the gastrointestinal tract confirmed excellent adhesion to the GI mucosa and a 17.9-fold increase in the gut retention half-time, demonstrating significant advantages in retention capability. In comparison, the control group without E. coli equipment resulted in quick gut passage. Furthermore, the artificially engineered E. coli serves as an effective carrier for macromolecules without notable oral toxicity, as evidenced by biocompatibility evaluations in cells and animals. Overall, the MOF-engineered E. coli provides an extendable platform for loading on-demand cargoes in versatile therapeutic functions with promising clinical transnationality for long-term applications.

Covalent Organic Framework Nanoarchitectonics: Recent Advances for Precious Metal Recovery

The recovery of precious metals (PMs) from secondary resources has garnered significant attention due to environmental and economic considerations. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as promising adsorbents for this purpose, owing to their tunable pore size, facile functionalization, exceptional chemical stability, and large specific surface area. This review provides an overview of the latest research progress in utilizing COFs to recover PMs. Firstly, the design and synthesis strategies of chemically stable COF-based materials, including pristine COFs, functionalized COFs, and COF-based composites, are delineated. Furthermore, the application of COFs in the recovery of gold, silver, and platinum group elements is delved into, emphasizing their high adsorption capacity and selectivity as well as recycling ability. Additionally, various interaction mechanisms between COFs and PM ions are analyzed. Finally, the current challenges faced by COFs in the field of PM recovery are discussed, and potential directions for future development are proposed, including enhancing the recyclability and reusability of COF materials and realizing the high recovery of PMs from actual acidic wastewater. With the targeted development of COF-based materials, the recovery of PMs can be realized more economically and efficiently in the future.

One-step synthesis of functional slippery lubricated coating with substrate independence, anti-fouling property, fog collection, corrosion resistance, and icephobicity

Ranging from industrial facilities to residential infrastructure, functional surfaces encompassing functionalities such as anti-fouling, fog collection, anti-corrosion, and anti-icing play a critical role in the daily lives of humans, but creating these surfaces is elusive. Bionic dewetting and liquid-infused surfaces have inspired the exploitation of functional surfaces. However, practical applications of these existing surfaces remain challenging because of their inherent shortcomings. In this study, we propose a novel functional slippery lubricated coating (FSLC) based on a simple blend of polysilazane (PSZ), silicone oil, and nano silica. This simple, nonfluorine based, and low-cost protocol promotes not only hierarchical micro-nano structure but also favorable surface chemistry, which facilitates robust silicone oil adhesion and excellent slippery properties (sliding angle: ∼1.6°) on various solid materials without extra processing or redundant treatments. The highly integrated competence of FSLC, characterized by robustness, durability, strong adhesion to substrates, and the ability for large-area preparation, render them ideal for practical production and application. The proposed FSLC holds outstanding application potentials for anti-fouling, self-cleaning, fog collection, anti-corrosion, and anti-icing functionalities.

A post-synthetic modification strategy for enhancing Pt adsorption efficiency in MOF/polymer composites

Growing polymers inside porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can allow incoming guests to access the backbone of otherwise non-porous polymers, boosting the number and/or strength of available adsorption sites inside the porous support. In the present work, we have devised a novel post-synthetic modification (PSM) strategy that allows one to graft metal-chelating functionality onto a polymer backbone while inside MOF pores, enhancing the material's ability to recover Pt(iv) from complex liquids. For this, polydopamine (PDA) was first grown inside of a MOF, known as Fe-BTC (or MIL-100 Fe). Next, a small thiol-containing molecule, 2,3-dimercapto-1-propanol (DIP), was grafted to the PDA via a Michael addition. After the modification of the PDA, the Pt adsorption capacity and selectivity were greatly enhanced, particularly in the low concentration regime, due to the high affinity of the thiols towards Pt. Moreover, the modified composite was found to be highly selective for precious metals (Pt, Pd, and Au) over common base metals found in electronic waste (i.e., Pb, Cu, Ni, and Zn). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) provided insight into the Pt adsorption/reduction process. Last, the PSM was extended to various thiols to demonstrate the versatility of the chemistry. It is hoped that this work will open pathways for the future design of novel adsorbents that are fine-tuned for the rapid, selective retrieval of high-value and/or critical metals from complex liquids.

Efficient recovery and recycling/upcycling of precious metals using hydrazide-functionalized star-shaped polymers

There is a growing demand for adsorption technologies for recovering and recycling precious metals (PMs) in various industries. Unfortunately, amine-functionalized polymers widely used as metal adsorbents are ineffective at recovering PMs owing to their unsatisfactory PM adsorption performance. Herein, a star-shaped, hydrazide-functionalized polymer (S-PAcH) is proposed as a readily recoverable standalone adsorbent with high PM adsorption performance. The compact chain structure of S-PAcH containing numerous hydrazide groups with strong reducibility promotes PM adsorption by enhancing PM reduction while forming large, collectable precipitates. Compared with previously reported PM adsorbents, commercial amine polymers, and reducing agents, S-PAcH exhibited significantly higher adsorption capacity, selectivity, and kinetics toward three PMs (gold, palladium, and platinum) with model, simulated, and real-world feed solutions. The superior PM recovery performance of S-PAcH was attributed to its strong reduction capability combined with its chemisorption mechanism. Moreover, PM-adsorbed S-PAcH could be refined into high-purity PMs via calcination, directly utilized (upcycled) as catalysts for dye reduction, or regenerated for reuse, demonstrating its high practical feasibility. Our proposed PM adsorbents would have a tremendous impact on various industrial sectors from the perspectives of environmental protection and sustainable development.

A comparative study of two thienopyrimidine Schiff base probes for sequential monitoring of Ga3+ and Pd2

Two Schiff base probes (S1 and S2) were prepared and synthesized by incorporating thienopyrimidine into salicylaldehyde or 3-ethoxysalicylaldehyde individually, with the aim of detecting Ga3+ and Pd2+ sequentially. Upon chelation with Ga3+, S1 and S2 exhibited fluorescence enhancement in DMSO/H2O buffer. Both S1-Ga3+ and S2-Ga3+ were quenched by Pd2+. The limit of detection for S1 in response to Ga3+ and Pd2+ was 2.86 × 10-7 and 4.4 × 10-9 M, respectively. For S2, the limit of detection for Ga3+ and Pd2+ was 4.15 × 10-8 and 3.0 × 10-9 M, respectively. Furthermore, the complexation ratios of both S1 and S2 with Ga3+ and Pd2+ were determined to be 1:2 through Job's plots, ESI-MS analysis, and theoretical calculations. Two molecular logic gates were constructed, leveraging the response behaviors of S1 and S2. Moreover, the potential utility of S1 and S2 for monitoring Ga3+ and Pd2+ in domestic water was verified.

A spherical adsorbent produced from a bagasse biochar chitosan assembly for selective adsorption of platinum-group metals from wastewater

This study addresses the challenge of platinum-group metal scarcity by exploring the adsorption of these metals from industrial wastewater. An inexpensive adsorbent with selective platinum-group metal adsorption capacity, named chitosan/citric acid@diatomaceous earth-sugarcane bagasse (CTS/CA@DE-SBS), was newly synthesized. The material features a double coating of chitosan and diatomite on bagasse biochar, and it exhibits an excellent adsorption performance for platinum-group metals due to the synergistic effects of the biochar and chitosan-diatomaceous earth intercross-linked coatings. CTS/CA@DE-SBS achieved an 81 % adsorption efficiency and a static saturated adsorption capacity of 217 mg/g for Pt (IV) in water. Notably, the material exhibited selective adsorption properties for platinum-group metals dissolved in diverse aqueous solutions. The potential for the secondary recovery of platinum-group metals in complex aqueous bodies further underscores the significance of this adsorbent. In conclusion, this research introduces a promising solution for platinum-group metal shortages, offering a cost-effective and selective adsorbent with potential applications in the secondary recovery of these metals from industrial wastewater.

Adsorption Behavior and Mechanism of Palladium on Diethylaminoethyl-Modified Polyglycidyl Methacrylate Macroporous Spheres

The recovery of precious metals, such as palladium (Pd), from wastewater, is an economically important field. The present study reports the application of polyglycidyl methacrylate (PGMA) macroporous spheres with diethylaminoethyl (DEAE) functional groups (PGMA-DEAE) for the adsorption of palladium ions [Pd(II)] from simulated wastewater solutions. The effects of pH, adsorption duration, and initial concentration of Pd(II) on the adsorption amount were evaluated systematically. The results revealed that within the experimental pH range, the adsorption efficiency of Pd(II) increased with increasing pH. In particular, between pH 4 and 6, the Pd(II) adsorption efficiencies were approximately 100%. At 298 K and pH ∼ 4, the adsorption capacity of PGMA-DEAE for Pd(II) was 1.22 mmol/g. The adsorption rates of PGMA-DEAE for Pd(II) were high, and the adsorption equilibrium was reached within 10 min. Ca(II), Mg(II), Co(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), and Fe(II) were selected as representative competitive adsorption metal ions. PGMA-DEAE had good separation selectivity for Pd(II) at pH 1-6 (all RPd/Me > 30), especially at pH ∼ 4 (all RPd/Me > 100). The SEM, TEM, EDS, TG, XRD, and XPS results indicated that in a high-acidity environment (CHCl ≥ 1 mol/L), Pd(II) was adsorbed on PGMA-DEAE through electrostatic attraction, while in a low-acidity environment (pH 1-6), Pd(II) was adsorbed on PGMA-DEAE through coordinated bonding between the Pd(II) ions and the N. PGMA-DEAE exhibited excellent stability and regeneration performance for five regeneration cycles.

Mining wastewater treatment technologies and resource recovery techniques: A review

Mining wastewater can have adverse effects on the ecosystem; thus, treatment before discharging into the environment is of utmost importance. This manuscript reports on the effect of mining wastewater on the environment. Moreover, the currently used, effective and commercialised mine wastewater treatment technologies such as SAVMIN®, SPARRO®, Biogenic sulphide, and DESALX® are reported in this study. These technologies integrate two or more separation processes, which have been proven to be effective for the high recovery of salts and water for reuse. Some of the technologies reported can significantly recover salts and >95% of water. Modern pilot-stage and laboratory-scale treatment systems used for the recovery and removal of metals are also reported herein. Since some treatment technologies can generate highly toxic sludge and other waste products, the management of the generated waste was also considered. Some studies have focused on the treatment of wastewater at the laboratory level using the adsorption process. Most adsorbents exhibit promising results; however, there is insufficient research on reusability, toxic sludge management, and the economic analysis of the systems. Moreover, the implementation of adsorption systems in wastewater is necessary. Furthermore, the integration of treatment systems to recover precious metals at low concentrations is desirable in addition to water reclamation to achieve circular mine water.

Rationally designed calcium carbonate multifunctional trap for contaminants adsorption

Adsorption technology has been widely developed to control environmental pollution, which plays an important role in the sustainable development of modern society. Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is characterized by its flexible pore design and functional group modification, which meet the high capacity and targeting requirements of adsorption. Therefore, its charm of "small materials for great use" makes it a suitable candidate for adsorption. Firstly, we comprehensively review the research progress of controlled synthesis and surface modification of CaCO3, and its application for adsorbing contaminants from water and air. Then, we systematically examine the structure-effect relationship between CaCO3 adsorbents and contaminants, while also intrinsic mechanism of remarkable capacity and targeted adsorption. Finally, from the perspective of material design and engineering application, we offer insightful discussion on the prospects and challenges of calcium carbonate adsorbents, providing a valuable reference for the further research in this field.

Tuning electronic structure of the carbon skeleton to accelerate electron transfer for promoting the capture of gold

The efficient and selective recovery of gold from secondary sources is key to sustainable development. However, the complexity of the recovery environment can significantly complicate the compositions of utilized sorbents. Here, we report a straw-derived mesoporous carbon as an inexpensive support material. This mesoporous carbon is modified by anions (sulfur modulation, C-S-180) to improve its electron-transfer efficiency and tune the electronic structure of its skeleton toward enhanced gold reduction. The high surface area of C-S-180 (989.4 m2/g), as well as the presence of abundant C-S in the porous structure of the adsorbent, resulted in an outstanding Au3+-uptake capacity (3422.75 mg/g), excellent resistance to interference, and favorable Au3+ selectivity. Dissimilar to most existing carbon-based adsorbents, electrochemistry-based studies on the electron-transfer efficiencies of adsorbents reveal that sulfur modulation is crucial to optimizing their adsorption performances. Furthermore, the density functional theory reveals that the optimization mechanism is attributable to the adjustment of the electronic structure of the carbon skeleton by C-S, which optimizes the band-gap energy for enhanced Au3+ reduction. These findings offer a strategy for constructing green and efficient adsorbents, as well as a basis for extending the applications of inexpensive carbon materials in gold recovery from complex environments.

Material Design Strategies for Recovery of Critical Resources from Water

Population growth, urbanization, and decarbonization efforts are collectively straining the supply of limited resources that are necessary to produce batteries, electronics, chemicals, fertilizers, and other important products. Securing the supply chains of these critical resources via the development of separation technologies for their recovery represents a major global challenge to ensure stability and security. Surface water, groundwater, and wastewater are emerging as potential new sources to bolster these supply chains. Recently, a variety of material-based technologies have been developed and employed for separations and resource recovery in water. Judicious selection and design of these materials to tune their properties for targeting specific solutes is central to realizing the potential of water as a source for critical resources. Here, the materials that are developed for membranes, sorbents, catalysts, electrodes, and interfacial solar steam generators that demonstrate promise for applications in critical resource recovery are reviewed. In addition, a critical perspective is offered on the grand challenges and key research directions that need to be addressed to improve their practical viability.

Turning precious metal-loaded e-waste to useful catalysts: Investigation into supercilious recovery and catalyst viability for peroxymonosulfate activation

Here, the key tasks to be accomplished are selective precious metal recovery from e-wastewater and their conversion into valuable catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. In this regard, we developed a hybrid material using 3D functional graphene foam and copper para-phenylenedithol (Cu-pPDT) MOF. The prepared hybrid showed a supercilious recovery of 92-95% even up to five cycles for Au(III) and Pd(II), which can be viewed as a reference for both the 2D graphene and the MOFs family. The outstanding performance has been attributed principally to the impact of diverse functionality as well as the unique morphology of 3D graphene foam, which provided a wide range of surface area and additional active sites in the hybrid frameworks. To prepare the surface-loaded metal nanoparticle catalysts, the sorbed samples recovered after precious metal extraction were calcined at 800 °C. The viability of the developed catalysts for the breakdown of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) via PMS activation was investigated. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR) and experiments with radical scavengers suggest that sulfate and hydroxyl radicals are the main reactive species involved in the breakdown of 4-NP. This is because the active graphitic carbon matrix and the exposed precious metal and copper active sites work together in a way that is more effective.

Graphene oxide-based dendritic adsorbent for the excellent capturing of platinum group elements

Herein, we report amino functionalized thermally stable graphene oxide-based dendritic adsorbent (GODA) with the highest sorption capacity ever recorded for platinum group elements (PGEs), including platinum (Pt(IV), PtCl₆^2-) and palladium (Pd(II), PdCl₄^2-), from highly acidic aqueous solutions. The GODA was designed and synthesized to have fully ionized amine binding sites and was characterized in detail. The detail batch adsorption experiment along with kinetic, isotherm, and thermodynamic studies were carried out to investigate the adsorption efficacy of GODA. For both Pt(IV) and Pd(II), the experimental data are more accurately fitted with the pseudo-second-order and the intraparticle diffusion kinetic models and Langmuir isotherm model as compared to the pseudo-first-order kinetic model and Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models, respectively. The material showed the highest ever adsorption capacities of 827.8 ± 27.7 mg/g (4.24 ± 0.00 mmol/g) and 890.7 ± 29.1 mg/g (8.37 ± 0.00 mmol/g) for Pt(IV) and Pd(II), respectively, at pH 1. The adsorption equilibriums were achieved within 70 min and 65 min for Pt(IV) and Pd(II), respectively. The thermodynamic parameters indicate that the adsorptions of both metals are spontaneous. The binding mechanisms are considered to be electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, cationic-π bonding, and surface complexation between the sorbent and the sorbates. Furthermore, the as-prepared GODA exhibited high thermal stability and significant acid-resistance at pH 1. The GODA demonstrated excellent regeneration and reusability for Pt(IV) and Pd(II) over five adsorption/desorption cycles, indicating its excellence in practical applications.

Assessment of physicochemical properties of sorbent materials in passive and active sampling systems towards gaseous nitrogen-containing compounds

The adsorption and desorption behavior of volatile nitrogen-containing compounds in vapor phase by solid-phase microextraction Arrow (SPME-Arrow) and in-tube extraction (ITEX) sampling systems, were investigated experimentally using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Three different SPME-Arrow coating materials, DVB/PDMS, MCM-41, and MCM-41-TP and two ITEX adsorbents, TENAX-GR and MCM-41-TP were compared to clarify the selectivity of the sorbents towards nitrogen-containing compounds. In addition, saturated vapor pressures for these compounds were estimated, both experimentally and theoretically. In this study, the adsorption of nitrogen-containing compounds on various adsorbents followed the Elovich model well, while a pseudo-first-order kinetics model best described the desorption kinetics. Pore volume and pore sizes of the coating sorbents were essential parameters for the determination of the adsorption performance for the SPME-Arrow sampling system. MCM-41-TP coating with the smallest pore size gave the slowest adsorption rate compared to that of DVB/PDMS and MCM-41 in the SPME-Arrow sampling system. Both adsorbent and adsorbate properties, such as hydrophobicity and basicity, affected the adsorption and desorption kinetics in SPME-Arrow system. The adsorption and desorption rates of studied C₆H₁₅N isomers in the MCM-41 and MCM-41-TP sorbent materials of SPME-Arrow system were higher for dipropylamine and triethylamine (branched amines) than for hexylamine (linear chain amines). DVB/PDMS-SPME-Arrow gave fast adsorption rates for the aromatic-ringed pyridine and o-toluidine. All studied nitrogen-containing compounds demonstrated high desorption rates with DVB/PDMS-SPME-Arrow. Chemisorption and physisorption were the sorption mechanisms in MCM-41- and MCM-41-TP- SPME-Arrow, but additional experiments are needed to confirm this. An active sampling technique ITEX gave comparable adsorption and desorption rates on the selective MCM-41-TP and universal TENAX-GR sorbent materials for all the compounds studied. Vapor pressures of nitrogen-containing compounds were experimentally estimated by using retention index approach and these values were compared with the theoretical ones, calculated using the COnductor-like Screening MOdel for Real Solvent (COSMO-RS) model. Both values agreed well with those found in the literature proving that these methods can be successfully used in predicting VOC's vapor pressures, e.g. for the formation of secondary organic aerosols.

Defective SO3H-MIL-101(Cr) for capturing different cationic metal ions: Performances and mechanisms

For broad-spectrum adsorption and capture toward cationic metal ions, a facile strategy was adopted to fabricate defective SO₃H-MIL-101(Cr) (SS-SO₃H-MIL-101(Cr)-X, X = 2, 3, 4) with enhanced vacancies using seignette salt (SS) as the modulating agent. The boosted adsorption performances of SS-SO₃H-MIL-101(Cr)-X toward eight different ions, including Ag⁺, Cs⁺, Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺, Ba²⁺, Sr²⁺, Eu³⁺ and La³⁺ in both individual component and mixed component systems, could be ascribed to the effective mass transfer resulting from the exposure of defective sites. Especially, the optimal SS-SO₃H-MIL-101(Cr)-3 could remove all the selected metal cations to below the permissible limits required by the World Health Organization (WHO) in the continuous-flow water treatment system. Furthermore, SS-SO₃H-MIL-101(Cr)-3 exhibited good adsorption capacity (189.6 mg·g^-1) toward Pb²⁺ under neutral condition and excellent desorption recirculation performance (removal efficiency > 95% after 5 cycles). Moreover, the adsorption mechanism involved the electrostatic adsorption and coordinative interactions resulting from complexation between the adsorption active sites and targeted cations (like Cr-O-M and S-O-M), which were explored systematically via both X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) determination and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Overall, this work provided guidance for modulating SS-SO₃H-MIL-101(Cr)-X to promote its potential application in widespread metal cations removal from wastewater.

Metal-organic frameworks-based microtrapper for real-time monitoring of targeted analyte and mechanism study

Interstitial fluid (ISF) provides important information of clinical value and physiological significance beyond blood tests for obtaining more precise health information and disease theranostics. Generally, current strategies are limited to simple extraction with time-consuming follow-up procedures. Facing challenges in efficient and real-time monitoring of target analytes in transdermal ISF, we develop metal-organic framework (MOF)-functionalized microneedle (MN) patches to achieve efficient antibiotics sampling, coupling direct analysis in real time mass spectrometry (DART-MS). The MOF MN microtrapper is constructed in a double-layered structure with a hard core and a better tissue penetration was accomplished. The MOF-based microtrapper manifests good in-vitro and in-vivo antibiotics tracking capability with a semi-quantitative method established. Moreover, the hydrogen-bond driven interaction is clarified by using molecular dynamics simulations (MDS) and related computational analysis. Good penetration safety is confirmed by histological analysis with promising clinical transnationality. We anticipate MOF MN-based microdevices provide a versatile minimally invasive strategy for transdermal ISF extraction and an extendable platform for a range of target molecules monitoring, including drugs, metabolites, biomarkers, et c, with promising clinical transnationality.

Bioinspired construction of magnetic nano stirring rods with radially aligned dual mesopores and intrinsic rapid adsorption of palladium

Quick and precise recovery of palladium (Pd) from electronic waste remains a serious task, owing to the strong acid and complexity of chemical compounds in leachate. Here, bioinspired construction of magnetic nano stirring rod with radially aligned dual mesopores and abundant 8-aminoquinoline (MNSR-DM-AQ) is proposed for selective and rapid extraction of Pd(II) from highly acidic sample solutions. Benefit from the unique dual mesoporous (12.4 nm and 3.6 nm) and the stirring motion under an external magnetic field, MNSR-DM-AQ possesses enhanced adsorption capacity and kinetics, achieving 11.62 mg g^-1 (97.2 % of the maximum adsorption capacity) in 15 min. Distribution coefficient (K_D = 299.0 mL g^-1), separation factor (α above 25.54) and concentration factor (CF = 230.2 mL g^-1) reveal the excellent selectivity of MNSR-DM-AQ towards Pd(II) when comparing with the coexisting ions (Ca(II), Co(II), Cu(II), Fe(II), Mg(II), Ni(II), Pb(II), Zn(II)). The adsorption mechanisms of MNSR-DM-AQ are ion exchange and chelation due to a strong affinity between Pd(II) and N. Meanwhile, 96.82 % of the captured Pd(II) can be easily eluted within 15 min, and the adsorption capacity remains stable after five adsorption-desorption cycles. It is worthwhile to mention that MNSR-DM-AQ exhibits a high adsorption capacity of 8.39 mg g^-1 from leachate of abandoned high-voltage patch capacitor, which is greatly desired in Pd(II) extraction from electronic waste.

ZIF-8 metal organic framework materials as a superb platform for the removal and photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants: a review

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are attracting significant attention for applications including adsorption, chemical sensing, gas separation, photocatalysis, electrocatalysis and catalysis. In particular, zeolitic imidazolate framework 8 (ZIF-8), which is composed of zinc ions and imidazolate ligands, have been applied in different areas of catalysis due to its outstanding structural and textural properties. It possesses a highly porous structure and chemical and thermal stability under varying reaction conditions. When used alone in the reaction medium, the ZIF-8 particles tend to agglomerate, which inhibits their removal efficiency and selectivity. This results in their mediocre reusability and separation from aqueous conditions. Thus, to overcome these drawbacks, several well-designed ZIF-8 structures have emerged by forming composites and heterostructures and doping. This review focuses on the recent advances on the use of ZIF-8 structures (doping, composites, heterostructures, etc.) in the removal and photodegradation of persistent organic pollutants. We focus on the adsorption and photocatalysis of three main organic pollutants (methylene blue, rhodamine B, and malachite green). Finally, the key challenges, prospects and future directions are outlined to give insights into game-changing breakthroughs in this area.

Magnetic Zr-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks: A Highly Efficient Au (III) Trapper for Gold Recycling

In this work, the magnetic Zr-based MOF composites with excellent retrievability were prepared using Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ as the core and UiO-66-NH₂ as the shell. Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ core could introduce mesopores and result in capillary condensation in MOF composites, which aggravated with the dosage of Fe₃O₄@SiO₂. The as-synthesized MOF composites could be rapidly retrieved from aqueous solution via magnetic separation in 10 seconds. pH imposed an important effect on Au (III) adsorption by governing the ion exchange and electrostatic interaction between Au (III) anions and adsorbents, and the optimal adsorption happened at pH 7. The adsorption process fitted well with the pseudo-second order kinetics model and Langmuir adsorption model. The maximum adsorption capacity of Au (III) by FSUN-10 and FSUN-50 at 298 K were determined to be 611.18 mg∙g^-1 and 463.85 mg∙g^-1, respectively. Additionally, Au (III) uptakes increased with temperature. Beyond experiments, the adsorption mechanisms were thoroughly studied through systematic characterization, molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) and density functional theory (DFT) study. It was verified that Au (III) was adsorbed via coordination to hydroxyl and amino groups and was reduced to Au (I) and Au (0) by amino groups. The diffusion coefficient of Au (III) along UiO-66-NH₂ was calculated to be 5.8 × 10^-5 cm²∙s^-1. Moreover, the magnetic Zr-based MOF composites exhibit great industrial value in gold recycling with high adsorption selectivity and good recyclability.

Hydroxypicolinic acid tethered on magnetite core-silica shell (HPCA@SiO2@Fe3O4) as an effective and reusable adsorbent for practical Co(II) recovery

The soaring demand and future supply risk for cobalt (Co) necessitate more efficient adsorbents for its recycling from electronic wastes, as a cheaper and less hazardous option for its production. Herein, a magnetic adsorbent covalently tethered with 5-hydroxypicolinic acid (HPCA) as Co(II) ligand was developed. The magnetic component (Fe₃O₄) was protected with silica (SiO₂), then silanized with chloroalkyl linker and subsequently functionalized with HPCA via S_N2 nucleophilic substitution (HPCA@SiO₂@Fe₃O₄). Results from FTIR, TGA, EA, and XPS confirm the successful adsorbent preparation with high HPCA loading of 2.62 mmol g^-1. TEM-EDS reveal its imperfect spherical morphology with ligands well-distributed on its surface. HPCA@SiO₂@Fe₃O₄ is hydrophilic, water-dispersible and magnetically retrievable, which is highly convenient for its recovery. The Co(II) capture on HPCA@SiO₂@Fe₃O₄ involves monodentate coordination with carboxylate (COO^-) and lone pair acceptance from pyridine (aromatic -N = ) moiety of HPCA, with minor interaction from acidic silanols (Si-O^-). The binding occurs at 2 HPCA: 1 Co(II) ratio, that follows the Sips isotherm model with competitive Q_max = 92.35 mg g^-1 and pseudo-second order kinetics (k₂ = 0.0042 g mg^-1 min^-1). In a simulated LIB liquid waste, HPCA@SiO₂@Fe₃O₄ preferentially captures Co(II) over Li(I) with α_Li(I)^Co(II)=166 and Mn(II) with α_Mn(II)^Co(II)=55, which highlights the importance of HPCA for Co(II) recovery. Silica protection of Fe₃O₄ rendered the adsorbent chemically stable in acidic thiourea solution for its regeneration by preventing the deterioration of the magnetic component. Covalent functionalization averted ligand loss, which allowed HPCA@SiO₂@Fe₃O₄ to deliver consistent and reversible adsorption/desorption performance. Overall results demonstrate the potential of HPCA@SiO₂@Fe₃O₄ as a competitive and practical adsorbent for Co(II) recovery in liquid waste sources.
