A systematic review on 2D materials for volatile organic compound sensing

Enhanced Sensitivity in Photovoltaic 2D MoS2/Te Heterojunction VOC Sensors

Volatile organic compound (VOC) sensors have a broad range of applications including healthcare monitoring, product quality control, and air quality management. However, many such applications are demanding, requiring sensors with high sensitivity and selectivity. 2D materials are extensively used in many VOC sensing devices due to their large surface-to-volume ratio and fascinating electronic properties. These properties, along with their exceptional flexibility, low power consumption, room-temperature operation, chemical functionalization potential, and defect engineering capabilities, make 2D materials ideal for high-performance VOC sensing. Here, a 2D MoS2/Te heterojunction is reported that significantly improves the VOC detection compared to MoS2 and Te sensors on their own. Density functional theory (DFT) analysis shows that the MoS2/Te heterojunction significantly enhances the adsorption energy and therefore sensing sensitivity of the sensor. The sensor response, which denotes the percentage change in the sensor's conductance upon VOC exposure, is further enhanced under photo-illumination and zero-bias conditions to values up to ≈7000% when exposed to butanone. The MoS2/Te heterojunction is therefore a promising device architecture for portable and wearable sensing applications.

Designing State-of-the-Art Gas Sensors: From Fundamentals to Applications

Gas sensors are crucial in environmental monitoring, industrial safety, and medical diagnostics. Due to the rising demand for precise and reliable gas detection, there is a rising demand for cutting-edge gas sensors that possess exceptional sensitivity, selectivity, and stability. Due to their tunable electrical properties, high-density surface-active sites, and significant surface-to-volume ratio, nanomaterials have been extensively investigated in this regard. The traditional gas sensors utilize homogeneous material for sensing where the adsorbed surface oxygen species play a vital role in their sensing activity. However, their performance for selective gas sensing is still unsatisfactory because the employed high temperature leads to the poor stability. The heterostructures nanomaterials can easily tune sensing performance and their different energy band structures, work functions, charge carrier concentration and polarity, and interfacial band alignments can be precisely designed for high-performance selective gas sensing at low temperature. In this review article, we discuss in detail the fundamentals of semiconductor gas sensing along with their mechanisms. Further, we highlight the existed challenges in semiconductor gas sensing. In addition, we review the recent advancements in semiconductor gas sensor design for applications from different perspective. Finally, the conclusion and future perspectives for improvement of the gas sensing performance are discussed.

A novel flexible CO2 gas sensor based on polyvinyl alcohol/yttrium oxide nanocomposite films

Polyvinyl alcohol/yttrium oxide (PVA/Y2O3) nanocomposite films with five different weight ratios of PVA and Y2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared using a simple solution casting method. The prepared polymer nanocomposite (PNC) films were examined using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). FTIR spectra exhibited a strong interaction between the PVA matrix and Y2O3 NPs. SEM results indicated that Y2O3 NPs were properly dispersed in the PVA matrix. The thermal stability of the PVA/Y2O3 nanocomposite films was found to be dependent on Y2O3 NP loading (wt%) in the nanocomposite films. Furthermore, chemiresistive gas sensing properties of the PVA/Y2O3 nanocomposite films were evaluated and the sensing parameters including sensing response, operating temperature, selectivity, stability, response/recovery time, and repeatability were systematically investigated based on the change in electrical resistance of the nanocomposite film in the presence of carbon dioxide (CO2) gas. The maximum sensing response (S) of 92.72% at a concentration of 100 ppm under an optimized operating temperature of 100 °C with a fast response/recovery time of ∼15/11 s towards CO2 gas detection was observed for the PVA/Y2O3 nanocomposite film with 5 wt% loading of Y2O3 NPs in the PVA matrix. The finding in this work suggest that Y2O3 NPs are sufficiently fast as a CO2 gas sensing material at a relatively low operating temperature. Moreover, the key role of the Y2O3 NPs in modulating the electrical and gas sensing properties of the PVA matrix is discussed here.

First-principles insights into the C6N7 monolayer as a highly efficient sensor and scavenger for the detection of selective volatile organic compounds

The design of new gas sensors and scavengers of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is desirable for VOC enriching, separation and utilization. Herein, first-principles methods were performed to investigate the potential of C6N7 monolayers as highly efficient sensors and scavengers for selective VOCs (toluene, benzene, vinyl chloride, ethane, methanal, acetone, ethanol, and acetaldehyde). The physisorption of toluene, benzene, acetone, ethanol, acetaldehyde, and methanal has relatively high adsorption strength and can significantly tune the electronic properties and work function (Φ) of the C6N7, indicating that the C6N7 monolayer is highly sensitive and selective to these VOC gases. In addition, the desorption time of benzene, acetone, ethanol, acetaldehyde, and methanal is about 3, 0.4, 2.0 × 10-2, 3.0 × 10-2, and 3.6 × 10-5 s at 300 K, respectively, indicating that the C6N7-based sensor has high reusability at room temperature. The recovery time of toluene was about 7.8 × 102 s at 300 K, showing disposable toluene gas sensing of the monolayer. Our work confirms that the C6N7 monolayer as a resistance-type and Φ-type gas sensor and scavenger is highly sensitive, selective and reusable for VOCs (benzene, acetone, ethanol, acetaldehyde, and methanol), but is a disposable toluene gas sensor and scavenger at room temperature.

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4)-assisted materials for the detection and remediation of hazardous gases and VOCs

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4)-based materials are attracting attention for their unique properties, such as low-cost, chemical stability, facile synthesis, adjustable electronic structure, and optical properties. These facilitate the use of g-C3N4 to design better photocatalytic and sensing materials. Environmental pollution by hazardous gases and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be monitored and controlled using eco-friendly g-C3N4- photocatalysts. Firstly, this review introduces the structure, optical and electronic properties of C3N4 and C3N4 assisted materials, followed by various synthesis strategies. In continuation, binary and ternary nanocomposites of C3N4 with metal oxides, sulfides, noble metals, and graphene are elaborated. g-C3N4/metal oxide composites exhibited better charge separation that leads to enhancement in photocatalytic properties. g-C3N4/noble metal composites possess higher photocatalytic activities due to the surface plasmon effects of metals. Ternary composites by the presence of dual heterojunctions improve properties of g-C3N4 for enhanced photocatalytic application. In the later part, we have summarised the application of g-C3N4 and its assisted materials for sensing toxic gases and VOCs and decontaminating NOx and VOCs by photocatalysis. Composites of g-C3N4 with metal and metal oxide give comparatively better results. This review is expected to bring a new sketch for developing g-C3N4-based photocatalysts and sensors with practical applications.

Enabling High Activity Catalyst Co3O4@CeO2 for Propane Catalytic Oxidation via Inverse Loading

Propane catalytic oxidation is an important industrial chemical process. However, poor activity is frequently observed for stable C-H bonds, especially for non-noble catalysts in low temperature. Herein, we reported a controlled synthesis of catalyst Co3O4@CeO2-IE via inverse loading and proposed a strategy of oxygen vacancy for its high catalytic oxidation activity, achieving better performance than traditional supported catalyst Co3O4/CeO2-IM, i.e., the T50 (temperature at 50% propane conversion) of 217 °C vs. 235 °C and T90 (temperature at 90% propane conversion) of 268 °C vs. 348 °C at the propane space velocity of 60,000 mL g-1 h-1. Further investigations indicate that there are more enriched oxygen vacancies in Co3O4@CeO2-IE due to the unique preparation method. This work provides an element doping strategy to effectively boost the propane catalytic oxidation performance as well as a bright outlook for efficient environmental catalysts.

Order-order assembly transition-driven polyamines detection based on iron-sulfur complexes

Innovative modes of response can greatly push forward chemical sensing processes and subsequently improve sensing performance. Classical chemical sensing modes seldom involve the transition of a delicate molecular assembly during the response. Here, we display a sensing mode for polyamine detection based on an order-order transition of iron-sulfur complexes upon their assembly. Strong validation proves that the unique order-order transition of the assemblies is the driving force of the response, in which the polyamine captures the metal ion of the iron-sulfur complex, leading it to decompose into a metal-polyamine product, accompanied by an order-order transition of the assemblies. This mechanism makes the detection process more intuitive and selective, and remarkably improves the detection efficiency, achieving excellent polyamines specificity, second-level response, convenient visual detection, and good recyclability of the sensing system. Furthermore, this paper also provides opportunities for the further application of the iron-sulfur platform in environment-related fields.

Ultrasensitive Room-Temperature NO2 Detection Using SnS2/MWCNT Composites and Accelerated Recovery Kinetics by UV Activation

High performance with lower power consumption is one among the essential features of a sensing device. Minute traces of hazardous gases such as NO₂ are difficult to detect. Tin disulfide (SnS₂) nanosheets have emerged as a promising NO₂ sensor. However, their poor room-temperature conductivity gives rise to inferior sensitivity and sluggish recovery rates, thereby hindering their applications. To mitigate this problem, we present a low-cost ultrasensitive NO₂ gas sensor with tin disulfide/multiwalled carbon nanotube (SnS₂/MWCNT) nanocomposites, prepared using a single-step hydrothermal method, as sensing elements. Relative to pure SnS₂, the conductivity of nanocomposites improved significantly. The sensor displayed a decrease in resistance when exposed to NO₂, an oxidizing gas, and exhibited p-type conduction, also confirmed in separate Mott-Schottky measurements. At a temperature of 20 °C, the sensor device has a relative response of about ≈5% (3%) for 25 ppb (1 ppb) of NO₂ with complete recovery in air (10 min) and excellent recovery rates with UV activation (0.3 min). A theoretical lower limit of detection (LOD) of 7 ppt implies greater sensitivity than all previously reported SnS₂-based gas sensors, to the best of our knowledge. The improved sensing characteristics were attributed to the formation of nano p-n heterojunctions, which enhances the charge transport and gives rise to faster response. The composite sensor also demonstrated good NO₂ selectivity against a variety of oxidizing and reducing gases, as well as excellent stability and long-term durability. This work will provide a fresh perspective on SnS₂-based composite materials for practical gas sensors.

Recent Advances in Sensing Materials Targeting Clinical Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) Biomarkers: A Review

In general, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have a high vapor pressure at room temperature (RT). It has been reported that all humans generate unique VOC profiles in their exhaled breath which can be utilized as biomarkers to diagnose disease conditions. The VOCs available in exhaled human breath are the products of metabolic activity in the body and, therefore, any changes in its control level can be utilized to diagnose specific diseases. More than 1000 VOCs have been identified in exhaled human breath along with the respiratory droplets which provide rich information on overall health conditions. This provides great potential as a biomarker for a disease that can be sampled non-invasively from exhaled breath with breath biopsy. However, it is still a great challenge to develop a quick responsive, highly selective, and sensitive VOC-sensing system. The VOC sensors are usually coated with various sensing materials to achieve target-specific detection and real-time monitoring of the VOC molecules in the exhaled breath. These VOC-sensing materials have been the subject of huge interest and extensive research has been done in developing various sensing tools based on electrochemical, chemoresistive, and optical methods. The target-sensitive material with excellent sensing performance and capturing of the VOC molecules can be achieved by optimizing the materials, methods, and its thickness. This review paper extensively provides a detailed literature survey on various non-biological VOC-sensing materials including metal oxides, polymers, composites, and other novel materials. Furthermore, this review provides the associated limitations of each material and a summary table comparing the performance of various sensing materials to give a better insight to the readers.
