Reverse-selective metal–organic framework materials for the efficient separation and purification of light hydrocarbons

Metal-organic frameworks with a sulfur-rich heterocycle: synthesis, gas adsorption properties, and metal exchange

Three new three-dimensional (3D) metal-organic frameworks [M2(ttdc)2(dabco)] (M = Zn(II), 1-Zn; Cu(II), 1-Cu; and Zn/Cu, 1-ZnCu) based on thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylate (ttdc2-) were synthesized and characterized by a combination of physicochemical methods (single crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, chemical and thermogravimetric analyses and IR spectroscopy). 1-Cu demonstrated permanent porosity (Vpore = 0.790 cm3 g-1 and SBET = 1725 m2 g-1) and significant CO2, CH4, C2H2, C2H4 and C2H6 gas uptakes under ambient conditions. The adsorption selectivities for gas mixtures, calculated by IAST, were 10.8 (10.7), 14.6 (9.4), 1.7 (1.6) and 1.5 (1.6) for the equimolar gas mixture compositions CO2/N2, C2H6/CH4, C2H6/C2H4 and C2H6/C2H2 at 1 bar and 273 K (298 K), respectively. The mixed-metal compound 1-ZnCu was prepared by a crystal-to-crystal ion exchange metathesis reaction from 1-Zn with a 52% degree of ion substitution, confirmed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, optical microscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

High-Pressure Molecular Sieving of High-Humidity C2H4/C2H6 Mixture by a Hydrophobic Flexible Metal-Organic Framework

Molecular sieving is an ideal separation mechanism, but controlling pore size, restricting framework flexibility, and avoiding strong adsorption are all very challenging. Here, we report a flexible adsorbent showing molecular sieving at ambient temperature and high pressure, even under high humidity. While typical guest-induced transformations are observed, a high transition pressure of 16.6 atm is observed for C2H4 at 298 K because of very weak C2H4 adsorption (~16 kJ mol-1). Also, C2H6 is completely excluded below the pore-opening pressure of 7.7 atm, giving single-component selectivity of ca. 300. Quantitative high-pressure column breakthrough experiments using 1 : 1 C2H4/C2H6 mixtures at 10 atm as input confirm molecular sieving with C2H4 adsorption of 0.73 mmol g-1 or 32 cm3(STP) cm-3 and negligible C2H6 adsorption of 0.001(2) mmol g-1, and the adsorbent can be completely regenerated by inert gas purging. Furthermore, it is highly hydrophobic with negligible water adsorption, and the C2H4/C2H6 separation performance is unaffected at high humidity.

Metal-organic framework-based adsorbents for blood purification: progress, challenges, and prospects

Blood purification, such as hemodialysis (HD), plasma exchange (PE), and hemoperfusion (HP), is widely applied in patients with organ failure (such as kidney and liver failure). Among them, HP mainly relies on porous adsorbents to efficiently adsorb accumulated metabolic wastes and toxins, thus improving purification efficiency. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), with a high porosity, large surface area, high loading capacity, and tailorable topology, are emerging as some of the most promising materials for HP. Compared with non-metal framework counterparts, the self-built metal centers of MOFs feature the intrinsic advantages of coordination with toxin molecules. However, research on MOFs in blood purification is insufficient, particularly in contrast to materials applied in other biomedical applications. Thus, to broaden this area, this review first discusses the essential characteristics, potential mechanisms, and structure-function relationship between MOFs and toxin adsorption based on porosity, topology, ligand functionalization, metal centers, and toxin types. Moreover, the stability, utilization safety, and hemocompatibility of MOFs are illustrated for adsorbent selection. The current development and progress in MOF composites for HD, HP, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) are also summarized to highlight their practicability. Finally, we propose future opportunities and challenges from materials design and manufacture to the computational prediction of MOFs in blood purification. It is anticipated that our review will expand the interest of researchers for more impact in this area.

Scalable Synthesis of Robust MOF for Challenging Ethylene Purification and Propylene Recovery with Record Productivity

Ethylene (C2H4) purification and propylene (C3H6) recovery are highly relevant in polymer synthesis, yet developing physisorbents for these industrial separation faces the challenges of merging easy scalability, economic feasibility, high moisture stability with great separation efficiency. Herein, we reported a robust and scalable MOF (MAC-4) for simultaneous recovery of C3H6 and C2H4. Through creating nonpolar pores decorated by accessible N/O sites, MAC-4 displays top-tier uptakes and selectivities for C2H6 and C3H6 over C2H4 at ambient conditions. Molecular modelling combined with infrared spectroscopy revealed that C2H6 and C3H6 molecules were trapped in the framework with stronger contacts relative to C2H4. Breakthrough experiments demonstrated exceptional separation performance for binary C2H6/C2H4 and C3H6/C2H4 as well as ternary C3H6/C2H6/C2H4 mixtures, simultaneously affording record productivities of 27.4 and 36.2 L kg-1 for high-purity C2H4 (≥99.9 %) and C3H6 (≥99.5 %). MAC-4 was facilely prepared at deckgram-scale under reflux condition within 3 hours, making it as a smart MOF to address challenging gas separations.

Separation of High-Purity C2H2 from Binary C2H2/CO2 Using Robust Al-Based MOFs Comprising Nitrogen-Containing Heterocyclic Dicarboxylate

In this study, three nitrogen-containing aluminum-based metal-organic frameworks (Al-MOFs), namely, CAU-10pydc, MOF-303, and KMF-1, were investigated for the efficient separation of a C2H2/CO2 gas mixture. Among these three Al-MOFs, KMF-1 demonstrated the highest selectivity for C2H2/CO2 separation (6.31), primarily owing to its superior C2H2 uptake (7.90 mmol g-1) and lower CO2 uptake (2.82 mmol g-1) compared to that of the other two Al-MOFs. Dynamic breakthrough experiments, using an equimolar binary C2H2/CO2 gas mixture, demonstrated that KMF-1 achieved the highest separation performance. It yielded 3.42 mmol g-1 of high-purity C2H2 (>99.95%) through a straightforward desorption process under He purging at 298 K and 1 bar. To gain insights into the distinctive characteristics of the pore surfaces of structurally similar CAU-10pydc and KMF-1, we conducted computational simulations using canonical Monte Carlo and dispersion-corrected density functional theory methods. These simulations revealed that the secondary amine (C2N-H) groups in KMF-1 played a more significant role in differentiating between C2H2 and CO2 compared to that of the N atoms in CAU-10pydc and MOF-303. Consequently, KMF-1 emerged as a promising adsorbent for the separation of high-purity C2H2 from binary C2H2/CO2 gas mixtures.

Efficient C2H6/C2H4 adsorption separation by a microporous heterometal-organic framework

Purification of ethylene (C2H4) is an essential and energy-intensive process in the petrochemical industry. Adsorption separation using ethane (C2H6)-selective porous adsorbents is a highly efficient and straightforward method for obtaining polymer-grade C2H4 from a binary C2H6/C2H4 mixture. However, the design and construction of C2H6-selective adsorbents are very challenging tasks. Herein, we demonstrate a microporous heterometal-organic framework, CuIn(ina)4, can preferentially enrich C2H6 than C2H4. Experimental results revealed that CuIn(ina)4 exhibited remarkable separation performance for the C2H6/C2H4 mixture with a high C2H6 loading capacity (3.3 mmol/g), high IAST selectivity (2.3) and separation potential (1578 mmol/L for equimolar C2H6/C2H4 mixture) under ambient conditions. The effectiveness of CuIn(ina)4 for C2H6/C2H4 adsorption separation was confirmed by theoretical calculations and breakthrough experiments.

Switching Adsorbent Layered Material that Enables Stepwise Capture of C8 Aromatics via Single-Crystal-to-Single-Crystal Transformations

Separation of the C8 aromatic isomers, xylenes (PX, MX, and OX) and ethylbenzene (EB), is important to the petrochemical industry. Whereas physisorptive separation is an energy-efficient alternative to current processes, such as distillation, physisorbents do not generally exhibit strong C8 selectivity. Herein, we report the mixed-linker square lattice (sql) coordination network [Zn2(sba)2(bis)]n·mDMF (sql-4,5-Zn, H2sba or 4 = 4,4'-sulfonyldibenzoic acid, bis or 5 = trans-4,4'-bis(1-imidazolyl)stilbene) and its C8 sorption properties. sql-4,5-Zn was found to exhibit high uptake capacity for liquid C8 aromatics (∼20.2 wt %), and to the best of our knowledge, it is the first sorbent to exhibit selectivity for PX, EB, and MX over OX for binary, ternary, and quaternary mixtures from gas chromatography. Single-crystal structures of narrow-pore, intermediate-pore, and large-pore phases provided insight into the phase transformations, which were enabled by flexibility of the linker ligands and changes in the square grid geometry and interlayer distances. This work adds to the library of two-dimensional coordination networks that exhibit high uptake, thanks to clay-like expansion, and strong selectivity, thanks to shape-selective binding sites, for C8 isomers.

Discriminatory Gate-Opening Effect in a Flexible Metal-Organic Framework for Inverse CO2 /C2 H2 Separation

Considering the significant application of acetylene (C2 H2 ) in the manufacturing and petrochemical industries, the selective capture of impurity carbon dioxide (CO2 ) is a crucial task and an enduring challenge. Here, a flexible metal-organic framework (Zn-DPNA) accompanied by a conformation change of the Me2 NH2 + ions in the framework is reported. The solvate-free framework provides a stepped adsorption isotherm and large hysteresis for C2 H2 , but type-I adsorption for CO2 . Owing to their uptakes difference before gate-opening pressure, Zn-DPNA demonstrated favorable inverse CO2 /C2 H2 separation. According to molecular simulation, the higher adsorption enthalpy of CO2 (43.1 kJ mol-1 ) is due to strong electrostatic interactions with Me2 NH2 + ions, which lock the hydrogen-bond network and narrow pores. Furthermore, the density contours and electrostatic potential verifies the middle of the cage in the large pore favors C2 H2 and repels CO2 , leading to the expansion of the narrow pore and further diffusion of C2 H2 . These results provide a new strategy that optimizes the desired dynamic behavior for one-step purification of C2 H2 .

Immobilization of the Polar Group into an Ultramicroporous Metal-Organic Framework Enabling Benchmark Inverse Selective CO2/C2H2 Separation with Record C2H2 Production

One-step harvest of high-purity light hydrocarbons without the desorption process represents an advanced and highly efficient strategy for the purification of target substances. The separation and purification of acetylene (C₂H₂) from carbon dioxide (CO₂) by CO₂-selective adsorbents are urgently demanded yet are very challenging owing to their similar physicochemical properties. Here, we employ the pore chemistry strategy to adjust the pore environment by immobilizing polar groups into an ultramicroporous metal-organic framework (MOF), achieving one-step manufacture of high-purity C₂H₂ from CO₂/C₂H₂ mixtures. Embedding methyl groups into prototype stable MOF (Zn-ox-trz) not only changes the pore environment but also improves the discrimination of guest molecules. The methyl-functionalized Zn-ox-mtz thus exhibits the benchmark reverse CO₂/C₂H₂ uptake ratio of 12.6 (123.32/9.79 cm³ cm^-3) and an exceptionally high equimolar CO₂/C₂H₂ selectivity of 1064.9 at ambient conditions. Molecular simulations reveal that the synergetic effect of pore confinement and surfaces decorated with methyl groups provides high recognition of CO₂ molecules through multiple van der Waals interactions. The column breakthrough experiments suggest that Zn-ox-mtz dramatically achieved the one-step purification capacity of C₂H₂ from the CO₂/C₂H₂ mixture with a record C₂H₂ productivity of 2091 mmol kg^-1, surpassing all of the CO₂-selective adsorbents reported so far. In addition, Zn-ox-mtz exhibits excellent chemical stability under different pH values of aqueous solutions (pH = 1-12). Moreover, the highly stable framework and excellent inverse selective CO₂/C₂H₂ separation performance showcase its promising application as a C₂H₂ splitter for industrial manufacture. This work paves the way to developing reverse-selective adsorbents for the challenging gas separation process.

Tuning the Trade-Off between Ethane/Ethylene Selectivity and Adsorption Capacity within Isoreticular Microporous Metal-Organic Frameworks by Linker Fine-Fluorination

The pore dimension and surface property directly dictate the transport of guests, endowing diverse gas selective adsorptions to porous materials. It is highly relevant to construct metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with designable functional groups that can achieve feasible pore regulation to improve their separation performances. However, the role of functionalization in different positions or degrees within framework on the separation of light hydrocarbon has rarely been emphasized. In this context, four isoreticular MOFs (TKL-104-107) bearing dissimilar fluorination are rationally screened out and afforded intriguing differences in the adsorption behavior of C₂ H₆ and C₂ H₄ . Ortho-fluoridation of carboxyl allows TKL-105-107 to exhibit enhanced structural stabilities, impressive C₂ H₆ adsorption capacities (>125 cm³ g^-1 ) and desirable inverse selectivities (C₂ H₆ over C₂ H₄ ). The more modified ortho-fluorine group and meta-fluorine group of carboxyl have improved the C₂ H₆ /C₂ H₄ selectivity and adsorption capacity, respectively, and the C₂ H₆ /C₂ H₄ separation potential can be well optimized via linker fine-fluorination. Meanwhile, dynamic breakthrough experiments proved that TKL-105-107 can be used as highly efficient C₂ H₆ -selective adsorbents for C₂ H₄ purification. This work highlights that the purposeful functionalization of pore surfaces facilitates the assembly of highly efficient MOF adsorbents for specific gas separation.

Methane Oxidation over the Zeolites-Based Catalysts

Zeolites have ordered pore structures, good spatial constraints, and superior hydrothermal stability. In addition, the active metal elements inside and outside the zeolite framework provide the porous material with adjustable acid–base property and good redox performance. Thus, zeolites-based catalysts are more and more widely used in chemical industries. Combining the advantages of zeolites and active metal components, the zeolites-based materials are used to catalyze the oxidation of methane to produce various products, such as carbon dioxide, methanol, formaldehyde, formic acid, acetic acid, and etc. This multifunction, high selectivity, and good activity are the key factors that enable the zeolites-based catalysts to be used for methane activation and conversion. In this review article, we briefly introduce and discuss the effect of zeolite materials on the activation of C–H bonds in methane and the reaction mechanisms of complete methane oxidation and selective methane oxidation. Pd/zeolite is used for the complete oxidation of methane to carbon dioxide and water, and Fe- and Cu-zeolite catalysts are used for the partial oxidation of methane to methanol, formaldehyde, formic acid, and etc. The prospects and challenges of zeolite-based catalysts in the future research work and practical applications are also envisioned. We hope that the outcome of this review can stimulate more researchers to develop more effective zeolite-based catalysts for the complete or selective oxidation of methane.

Insights into the thermodynamic-kinetic synergistic separation of propyne/propylene in anion pillared cage MOFs with entropy-enthalpy balanced adsorption sites

Propyne/propylene (C3H4/C3H6) separation is an important industrial process yet challenged by the trade-off of selectivity and capacity due to the molecular similarity. Herein, record C3H4/C3H6 separation performance is achieved by fine tuning the pore structure in anion pillared MOFs. SIFSIX-Cu-TPA (ZNU-2-Si) displays a benchmark C3H4 capacity (106/188 cm3 g-1 at 0.01/1 bar and 298 K), excellent C3H4/C3H6 IAST selectivity (14.6-19.3) and kinetic selectivity, and record high C3H4/C3H6 (10/90) separation potential (36.2 mol kg-1). The practical C3H4/C3H6 separation performance is fully demonstrated by breakthroughs under various conditions. 37.8 and 52.9 mol kg-1 of polymer grade C3H6 can be produced from 10/90 and 1/99 C3H4/C3H6 mixtures. 4.7 mol kg-1 of >99% purity C3H4 can be recovered by a stepped desorption process. Based on the in situ single crystal analysis and DFT calculation, an unprecedented entropy-enthalpy balanced adsorption pathway is discovered. MD simulation further confirmed the thermodynamic-kinetic synergistic separation of C3H4/C3H6 in ZNU-2-Si.

Substituent Engineering-Enabled Structural Rigidification and Performance Improvement for C2/CO2 Separation in Three Isoreticular Coordination Frameworks

Construction of porous solid materials applied to the adsorptive removal of CO₂ from C₂ hydrocarbons is highly demanded thanks to the important role C₂ hydrocarbons play in the chemical industry but quite challenging owing to the similar physical parameters between C₂ hydrocarbons and CO₂. In particular, the development of synthetic strategies to simultaneously enhance the uptake capacity and adsorption selectivity is very difficult due to the trade-off effect frequently existing between both of them. In this work, a combination of the dicopper paddlewheel unit and 4-pyridylisophthalate derivatives bearing different substituents afforded an isoreticular family of coordination framework compounds as a platform. Their adsorption properties toward C₂ hydrocarbons and CO₂ were systematically investigated, and subsequent IAST and density functional theory calculations combined with column breakthrough experiments verified their promising potential for C₂/CO₂ separations. Furthermore, the substituent engineering endowed the resulting compounds with simultaneous enhancement of uptake capacity and adsorption selectivity and thus better C₂/CO₂ separation performance compared to their parent compound. The substituent introduction not only mitigated the framework distortion via fixing the ligand conformation for establishment of better permanent porosity required for gas adsorption but also polarized the framework surface for host-guest interaction improvement, thus resulting in enhanced separation performance.

Customizing Pore System in a Microporous Metal–Organic Framework for Efficient C2H2 Separation from CO2 and C2H4

Selective-adsorption separation is an energy-efficient technology for the capture of acetylene (C2H2) from carbon dioxide (CO2) and ethylene (C2H4). However, it remains a critical challenge to effectively recognize C2H2 among CO2 and C2H4, owing to their analogous molecule sizes and physical properties. Herein, we report a new microporous metal–organic framework (NUM-14) possessing a carefully tailored pore system containing moderate pore size and nitro-functionalized channel surface for efficient separation of C2H2 from CO2 and C2H4. The activated NUM-14 (namely NUM-14a) exhibits sufficient pore space to acquire excellent C2H2 loading capacity (4.44 mmol g−1) under ambient conditions. In addition, it possesses dense nitro groups, acting as hydrogen bond acceptors, to selectively identify C2H2 molecules rather than CO2 and C2H4. The breakthrough experiments demonstrate the good actual separation ability of NUM-14a for C2H2/CO2 and C2H2/C2H4 mixtures. Furthermore, Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations indicate that the pore surface of the NUM-14a has a stronger affinity to preferentially bind C2H2 over CO2 and C2H4 via stronger C-H···O hydrogen bond interactions. This article provides some insights into customizing pore systems with desirable pore sizes and modifying groups in terms of MOF materials toward the capture of C2H2 from CO2 and C2H4 to promote the development of more MOF materials with excellent properties for gas adsorption and separation.
