Effect of the difference water amounts and hydrolysis times of silane coupling agent on the shear bond strength between lithium disilicate glass ceramic and composite resin

This study was to evaluate the effect of different water amounts and hydrolysis times of silane coupling agent on shear bond strength between lithium disilicate glass ceramic (LDS) and composite resin. Fourteen groups (n=7) of different water amounts (90, 50 and 10%v/v) and hydrolysis times (5, 19, 75 and 300 s) of experimental silane coupling agent that were prepared for silanization, non-silanization and commercial silane coupling agent (CSC) groups. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed no interaction between water amounts and hydrolysis times of ESC on shear bond strength between LDS and composite resin. One-way ANOVA exhibited the highest shear bond strength and the highest mean percentage in mixed failure mode in the 50%v/v group. Molecular analysis of 13C and 29Si indicated that nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of M2 and M3 hydrolysis species were found in 50%v/v group. The presenting of M2 and M3 which was predominant factor contributing to the highest shear bond strength.

Luting laminate veneers: Do resin-composites produce less polymerization stress than resin cements?

OBJECTIVES

Regular composites could produce less polymerization stress than resin cements when luting laminate veneers but there is no proper evidence to support this theory. The current study aimed to determine the degree of conversion, volumetric shrinkage, polymerization stress and the resultant elastic moduli of materials currently used for adhesive cementation and to determine possible correlations.

METHODS

The study considered (i) regular resin composites (Admira Fusion, Gradia, Grandioso, Palfique, Sirius Z, Viscalor and Z100) at room and pre-warmed (PW) at 69ºC, (ii) flowable composites (Sigma Flow and Grandioso Flow); (iii) solely light-activated cements (AllCem Veneer, Variolink Esthetic and RelyX Veneer); and (iv) one dual-activated resin cement (SpeedCEM). Degree of conversion (DC, n = 3) was accessed with FTIR 1 h after irradiation. Bonded-disk and Bioman II instruments were used to access polymerization shrinkage strain and shrinkage stress, respectively, for 60 min at 23 ± 1◦C (n = 3). The elastic modulus was determined by 3-point bending flexural test (n = 6). The results were submitted to analyse s of variance, Tukey's, and correlation tests.

RESULTS

For regular composites, the pre-warming did not affect DC, shrinkage and modulus but significantly increased the stress magnitude. Correlation tests indicated a significant relationship only between stress and polymerization shrinkage (r = 0.811343).

SIGNIFICANCE

Regular composites can produce less polymerization stress than resin cements when luting laminate veneers. Polymerization stress was dependent on the shrinkage magnitude, but not on the degree of conversion nor the elastic modulus.

Veneer crowns in anterior endodontically-treated teeth: A case report with 1-year follow-up

Veneer crowns can be used in anterior endodontically-treated teeth with light occlusal force and enamel substrate consideration as a more conservative approach instead of conventional all ceramic crowns.

Abstract

All-ceramic anterior crowns and veneers have been used widely in dentistry with high clinical success rate. The development of new reinforced ceramics in recent years has led to more use of extended defect-oriented preparation designs, that is, extended veneers, instead of full crown preparations which are less invasive. A veneer crown is simply a veneer that covers the entire tooth. The preparation preserves remaining enamel and uses a conservative preparation design. Its indication should be carefully raised taking into consideration various factors. The preparation design is crucial to ensure longevity of such restoration. The balance is between sufficient preparation for the material thickness and adequate strength against occlusal load and the enamel preservation. A 24-year-old man referred to the restorative department of the Dentistry School of Tehran University of Medical Sciences complaining from his poor esthetics in the maxillary incisors. In clinical and radiographic evaluation, he had open bite, composite discoloration due to corrosion of the pre-fabricated posts in all four incisors, a periapical lesion in tooth 21 and under-filled root canal therapy in tooth 22. All four posts and composite restorations were removed and teeth 21 and 22 were retreated. Although the amount of remaining tooth tissue was low, it had enough enamel thickness, especially in the buccal area. Taking into consideration this mixed enamel and dentin substrate, endodontics access, esthetics needs and canine guidance occlusion with no parafunction history, bonded lithium disilicate veneer crowns were selected to restore the maxillary incisors. A 12-month follow-up showed promising clinical (healthy gingival tissue and successful restorations) and radiographic (reduced periapical lesion) outcomes.

Effect of Repressing Lithium Disilicate Glass Ceramics on The Shear Bond Strength of Resin Cements

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of repeated pressing of lithium disilicate ceramic on the shear bond strength (SBS) of three types of resin cement.

METHODOLOGY

A lithium disilicate ceramic (IPS e.max® Press) was first heat-pressed to form rectangular disk specimens. Then, leftovers were used for the second and third presses. A total of 90 specimens were prepared and separated, according to the number of pressing cycles, into three groups: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd presses (n = 30). Each group was further subdivided into three groups (n = 10) according to the type of resin cement used, as follows: Multilink N (MN), Variolink Esthetic DC (VDC), and Variolink Esthetic LC (VLC). All the cement was bonded to the ceramic surface, which was etched with hydrofluoric acid and primed with Monobond Plus. All samples were light-cured and stored for 24 h. Shear bond strength was tested on a universal testing machine.

RESULTS

A two-way ANOVA was used to evaluate the influence of repeated pressing cycles and cement type as well as their interaction. The results indicated that cement type has a significant impact (p < 0.001) but not the number of pressing cycles (p = 0.970) or their interaction (p = 0.836). The Bonferroni post-hoc test showed that the SBS of MN was significantly higher than that of VDC and VLC in the first press and second press cycles, respectively. The SBS of MN was significantly higher than that of VDC and VLC cements in the third pressing cycle. There was no significant difference in the SBS between VLC and VDC in all three pressing cycles.

CONCLUSION

The results of the current study did not report a detrimental effect of repeated pressing up to three cycles on the shear bond strength of the IPS e.max® Press. Multilink resin cement showed the highest SBS to IPS e.max® Press at the third pressing cycle. For all types of cement and heat pressing cycles, the majority of cement failures were adhesive. No cohesive failures occurred in any of the tested resin cements, regardless of the cement type or the number of heat pressing cycles tested.

Research on Integrated 3D Printing of Microfluidic Chips

Microfluidic chips have the advantages of miniaturization, integration, and portability, and are widely used in the early diagnosis of major diseases, personalized medical treatment, environmental detection, health quarantine, and other fields. The existing microfluidic chip manufacturing process is difficult to operate because of complex three-dimensional channels, complicated manufacturing steps, limited printing materials, the difficulty of operating the bonding process, and the need to purchase expensive new equipment. In this paper, an integrated molding method for microfluidic chips that integrates 3D printing and polymer dissolution technology is proposed. First, the channel mold of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) or high impact polystyrene (HIPS) is dissolved to complete the manufacturing of the microfluidic chip channel. The integrated 3D-forming method of microfluidic chips proposed in this paper can manufacture microchannels inside the microfluidic chip, avoid the bonding process, and eliminate the need for rapid alignment of microchannels, material modification, and other operations, thus improving the stability of the process. Finally, by comparing the microchannels made by PVA and HIPS, it is concluded that the quality of the microchannels made by HIPS is obviously better than that made by PVA. This paper provides a new idea for the fabrication of microfluidic chips and the application of HIPS.

Lithium disilicate occlusal surfaces on acrylic resin denture teeth in a mandibular implant-retained overdenture opposed by a maxillary removable complete denture: A clinical report

Decreased masticatory efficiency, loss of vertical dimension of occlusion, and loss of maxillomandibular relationships are common in relation to the wear experienced by the artificial teeth in removable complete dentures and implant-retained overdentures. To prevent early surface loss, the occlusal surfaces of acrylic resin denture teeth were replaced with adhesively luted lithium disilicate onlays in this patient's prostheses.
