Exploring the association between phase angle of bioimpedance at 50 kHz and cardiovascular risk

BACKGROUND

Cardiovascular diseases are characterized by chronic inflammation, leading to increased inflammatory markers that can cause cell damage and death. Phase angle has emerged as a marker of cellular health. It is considered a prognostic factor in various acute and chronic conditions. However, few studies have examined its association with cardiovascular disease risk measures. This study aims to investigate the relationship between phase angle, the general Framingham risk score, and the HEARTS cardiovascular risk score.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study included a convenience sample of adult patients of 2 primary health care services. Phase angle was measured using multifrequency bioimpedance analysis at 50 kHz. The risk of cardiovascular events was calculated using the Framingham and HEARTS risk scores. Statistical analysis included generalized linear regression models, unadjusted and adjusted according to sex and age, to determine the association between scores, risk factors, and phase angle.

RESULTS

The study included 164 individuals with a mean age 52.2 (SD 17.9). According to the HEARTS score, low-risk patients had higher phase angle values than those with high or very high risk [ß = -0.57 (95% CI -0.95; -0.19), P = 0.003]. Framingham scores showed a trend toward significance for higher mean phase angle values in low-risk than high-risk patients [ß = -0.43 (95% CI -0.88 to 0.02), P = 0.06].

CONCLUSION

Phase angle values were lower in high and very high-risk patients than in low-risk patients, which shows that phase angle is a promising risk predictor for patients with cardiovascular diseases.

Research progress on the improvement of cardiovascular diseases through the autonomic nervous system regulation of the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway

Cardiovascular disease stands as a leading global cause of mortality. Nucleotide-binding Oligomerization Domain-like Receptor Protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome is widely acknowledged as pivotal factor in specific cardiovascular disease progression, such as myocardial infarction, heart failure. Recent investigations underscore a close interconnection between autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction and cardiac inflammation. It has been substantiated that sympathetic nervous system activation and vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) assumes critical roles withinNLRP3 inflammasome pathway regulation, thereby contributing to the amelioration of cardiac injury and enhancement of prognosis in heart diseases. This article reviews the nexus between NLRP3 inflammasome and cardiovascular disorders, elucidating the modulatory functions of the sympathetic and vagus nerves within the ANS with regard to NLRP3 inflammasome. Furthermore, it delves into the potential therapeutic utility of NLRP3 inflammasome to be targeted by VNS. This review serves as a valuable reference for further exploration into the potential mechanisms underlying VNS in the modulation of NLRP3 inflammasome.

Protective effect of naringin against radiation-induced heart disease in rats via Sirt1/NF-κB signaling pathway and endoplasmic reticulum stress

This study was designed to explore the protective effect and mechanism of naringin (NG) on radiation-induced heart disease (RIHD) in rats. Rats were divided into four x-ray (XR) irradiation groups with different absorbed doses (0/10/15/20 Gy), or into three groups (control, XR, and XR + NG groups). Subsequently, the ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus was adopted to assess and compare the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), left ventricular fractional shortening (LVFS), left ventricular internal diameter at end diastole (LVIDd), and left ventricular internal diameter at end systole (LVIDs) in rats. Hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining and Masson staining were applied to detect the pathological damage and fibrosis of heart tissue. Western blot was used to measure the expression levels of myocardial fibrosis-related proteins, endoplasmic reticulum stress-related proteins, and Sirt1 (silent information regulator 1)/NF-κB (nuclear factor kappa-B) signaling pathway-related proteins in cardiac tissues. Additionally, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was utilized to detect the activities of pro-inflammatory cytokines, malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) in cardiac tissue. The results showed that NG treatment significantly attenuated the 20 Gy XR-induced decline of LVEF and LVFS and the elevation of LVIDs. Cardiac tissue damage and fibrosis caused by 20 Gy XR were significant improved after NG treatment. Meanwhile, in rats irradiated by XR, marked downregulation was identified in the expressions of fibrosis-related proteins (Col I, collagen type I; α-SMA, α-smooth muscle actin; and TGF-β1, transforming growth factor-beta 1) and endoplasmic reticulum stress-related proteins (GRP78, glucose regulatory protein 78; CHOP, C/EBP homologous protein; ATF6, activating transcription factor 6; and caspase 12) after NG treatment. Moreover, NG treatment also inhibited the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines [interleukin-6, interleukin-1β, and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1)], reduced the expression of MDA, and promoted the activities of SOD and CAT. Also, NG treatment promoted Sirt1 expression and inhibited p65 phosphorylation. Collectively, XR irradiation induced cardiac injury in rats in a dose-dependent manner. NG could improve the cardiac injury induced by XR irradiation by inhibiting endoplasmic reticulum stress and activating Sirt1/NF-κB signaling pathway.

In silico analysis and verification of critical genes related to vascular calcification in multiple diseases

Identifying a functional molecular therapeutic target of vascular calcification (VC) that will not affect normal osteogenic differentiation is a challenge. To address this aim, we screened the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in different VC conditions, including endothelial-osteogenic transition (EOT) (GSE167962), chronic kidney disease (CKD), and atherosclerosis (AS) (GSE159832). KEGG pathways, protein-protein interactions, and hub genes were also analyzed. The intersecting DEGs among the EOT, CKD, and AS groups were verified by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry in a DOCA-salt hypertension mouse model. The phosphoinositide 3-kinase-protein kinase B signaling pathway, ECM-receptor interaction, chemokine signaling pathway, and focal adhesion were enriched in EOT and AS-induced VC. ECM-receptor interaction, PPAR signaling pathway, apelin signaling pathway, AMPK signaling pathway, adipocytokine signaling pathway, and cholesterol metabolism were enriched in CKD and AS-induced VC. C4b, Cebpa, Lyz2, and Spp1 were also upregulated in EOT, CKD, AS, and hypertension. This study identified promising molecular targets for VC therapy.
