The association of social networks and depression in community-dwelling older adults: a systematic review

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

Depression is a globally prevalent mental condition, particularly among older adults. Previous research has identified that social networks have a buffering effect on depression. Existing systematic reviews have either limited their research to specific geographic areas or provided evidence from over a decade ago. The vast body of recent literature particularly from the last decade emphasizes the need for a comprehensive review. This systematic review aims to analyze the association of structural aspects of social networks and depression in older adults.

METHODS

The electronic databases APA PsycINFO, ProQuest, PSYINDEX, PubMed, Scopus, SocINDEX, and Web of Science were searched from date of data base inception until 11 July 2023. Studies were eligible for inclusion if they reported on community-dwelling older adults (defined as a mean age of at least 60 years old), had an acceptable definition for depression, referred to the term social network in the abstract, and were published in English. Quality was appraised using the Newcastle Ottawa Scale for cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. Outcome data were extracted independently from each study and analyzed by direction of the relationship, social network domain and cross-sectional or longitudinal study design.

RESULTS

In total, 127 studies were included. The study categorizes structural network aspects into seven domains and finds that larger and more diverse networks, along with closer social ties, help mitigate depression. The literature on the relationships between depression and network density, homogeneity, and geographical proximity is scarce and inconclusive. DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS: Despite inconsistent findings, this review highlights the importance of quantifying complex social relations of older adults. Limitations of this review include publication and language bias as well as the exclusion of qualitative research. Further research should use longitudinal approaches to further investigate the reciprocal relationship between social networks and depression. Following this review, interventions should promote the integration of older adults in larger and more diverse social settings. Men's Social Connectedness in Later Life: A Qualitative Study with Older Men

This qualitative study aimed to understand men's social connectedness in later life in Portugal focusing on their perceptions, obstacles, strategies, and impact on well-being. The sample included 104 older Portuguese men over 65 years of age (Mage = 70.76 years). The qualitative data were the direct transcriptions of the answers given by participants to the electronic interview using thematic analysis. Findings revealed six overarching themes encompassing 18 subcategories: definitions of social connectedness (social support, community identity, mental health promotion, use of community structures), difficulties/obstacles in maintaining social connectedness (ageism, lack of initiative, physical limitations, psychological traits, resources), strategies/actions or resources to establish social connections (use of technology, use of community groups, leisure and sport activities, church/religion), negative impact of difficulties in establishing relevant social connections (mental health, physical health, relationships), positive actions from being socially connected (positive prescriptions to promote social connectedness), and concerns from being socially disconnected (health risks). These findings indicate that the lack of social connectedness creates social vulnerability in later life, and social support is needed to ensure safer aging among older men.

Exploring factors influencing farmers' health self-assessment in China based on the LASSO method

As the main force and practice subject of rural revitalisation, farmers' health is intricately linked to agricultural production and the rural economy. This study utilizes open data from the 2015 China Nutrition and Health Survey and employs the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) method to explore the factors influencing farmers' self-assessment of health. The findings reveal that education level, proactive nutrition knowledge seeking, healthy dietary preferences and habits, and the use of clean cooking fuel positively impact farmers' health self-assessment. Conversely, age, history of illness or injury, and participation in medical insurance negatively affect their self-assessment. Furthermore, factors influencing farmers' health self-assessment exhibit heterogeneity across regions. Our findings suggest that promoting health education, disseminating nutritional dietary knowledge, and enhancing rural household infrastructure play an important role in improving farmers' self-evaluation of health. Therefore, policymakers should design more targeted health interventions and infrastructure improvement plans based on farmers' self-assessment of health and the level of regional economic development.

Rural urban differences in self-rated health among older adults: examining the role of marital status and living arrangements

BACKGROUND

The rural-urban gap in socioeconomic and morbidity status among older adults is prevalent in India. These disparities may impact the levels and factors of self-rated health (SRH). The objective of the study is to compare the levels and determinants of SRH between rural and urban areas by considering the moderating effects of marital status and living arrangements.

SUBJECTS AND METHODS

The present study used data from the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI) wave 1 (2017-18). A total sample of 30,633 older adults aged 60 years and above were selected for the study. Descriptive statistics, bivariate chi-square test, the interaction effect of living arrangements and marital status, and logistic estimation were applied to accomplish the study objectives.

RESULTS

The prevalence of poor SRH was found 7% higher in rural areas compared to urban counterparts. A substantial rural-urban disparity in the patterns of poor SRH was also observed. The interaction effect of marital status and living arrangement on self-rated health suggested that older adults who were currently unmarried and living alone were 38% more likely to report poor SRH than those who were currently married and co-residing in rural India. In addition to marital status and living situation, other factors that significantly influenced SRH include age, socio-cultural background (educational attainment and religion), economic background (employment status), health status (ADLs, IADLs, multi-morbidities), and geographic background (region).

CONCLUSION

The present study's findings demonstrated that, notwithstanding local variations, marital status and living circumstances significantly influenced SRH in India. In the present study, unmarried older people living alone were more susceptible to poor SRH in rural areas. The present study supports the importance of reinforcing the concepts of care and support for older individuals. There is a need for special policy attention to older individuals, particularly those unmarried and living alone. Although older individuals had difficulty performing ADLs and IADLs and had multi-morbidities, they reported poorer health. Therefore, offering them social support and top-notch medical assistance is crucial.
