Bimetallic Coordination Polymers: Synthesis and Applications in Biosensing and Biomedicine

Bimetallic coordination polymers (CPs) have two different metal ions as connecting nodes in their polymer structure. The synthesis methods of bimetallic CPs are mainly categorized into the one-pot method and post-synthesis modifications according to various needs. Compared with monometallic CPs, bimetallic CPs have synergistic effects and excellent properties, such as higher gas adsorption rate, more efficient catalytic properties, stronger luminescent properties, and more stable loading platforms, which have been widely applied in the fields of gas adsorption, catalysis, energy storage as well as conversion, and biosensing. In recent years, the study of bimetallic CPs synergized with cancer drugs and functional nanomaterials for the therapy of cancer has increasingly attracted the attention of scientists. This review presents the research progress of bimetallic CPs in biosensing and biomedicine in the last five years and provides a perspective for their future development.

Electrochemically enhanced iron oxide-modified carbon cathode toward improved heterogeneous electro-Fenton reaction for the degradation of norfloxacin

In this work, different iron-based cathode materials were prepared using two different approaches: a novel one-step approach, which involved the incorporation of iron oxide with Printex® L6 carbon/PTFE (PL6C/PTFE) on bare carbon felt (CF) and a two-step approach, where iron oxide is deposited onto CF previously modified with PL6C/PTFE. The results obtained from the physical characterization indicated that the presence of iron oxide homogeneously dispersed on the felt fibers with the CF 3-D network kept intact in the one-step approach; whereas the formation of iron oxide aggregates between the felt fibers for material obtained using the two-step approach. Among the iron oxide-based cathodes investigated, the iron-incorporated electrode exhibited the greatest efficiency in terms of the removal and mineralization of norfloxacin (NOR) under neutral pH (complete NOR removal in less than 30 min with around 50% mineralization after 90 min). The findings of this study show that the low cost and simple-to-prepare iron-modified carbon-based materials in HEF process led to the enhanced degradation of organic contaminants in aqueous solutions.

Efficient Activation of Peroxymonosulfate by Biochar-Loaded Zero-Valent Copper for Enrofloxacin Degradation: Singlet Oxygen-Dominated Oxidation Process

The removal of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) has become a hot research topic in the field of environmental engineering in recent years. In this work, a simple pyrolysis method was designed to prepare a high-performance biochar-loaded zero-valent copper (CuC) material for the catalytic degradation of antibiotics ENR by PMS. The results showed that 10 mg/L of ENR was completely removed within 30 min at an initial pH of 3, CuC 0.3 g/L, and PMS 2 mmol/L. Further studies confirmed that the reactive oxygen species (ROS) involved in ENR degradation are ·OH, SO4-·, ¹O₂, and O2-. Among them, ¹O₂ played a major role in degradation, whereas O2-· played a key role in the indirect generation of ¹O₂. On the one hand, CuC adsorbed and activated PMS to generate ·OH, SO4-· and O2-·. O2-· was unstable and reacted rapidly with H₂O and ·OH to generate large amounts of ¹O₂. On the other hand, both the self-decomposition of PMS and direct activation of PMS by C=O on biochar also generated ¹O₂. Five byproducts were generated during degradation and eventually mineralized to CO₂, H₂O, NO3-, and F^-. This study provides a facile strategy and new insights into the biochar-loaded zero-valent transition-metal-catalyzed PMS degradation of CECs.

A state of the art review on electrochemical technique for the remediation of pharmaceuticals containing wastewater

Pharmaceutical wastewater is a frequent kind of wastewater with high quantities of organic pollutants, although little research has been done in the area. Pharmaceutical wastewaters containing antibiotics and high salinity may impair traditional biological treatment, resulting in the propagation of antibiotic resistance genes. The potential for advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) to break down hazardous substances instead of present techniques that essentially transfer contaminants from wastewater to sludge, a membrane filter, or an adsorbent has attracted interest. Among a variety of AOPs, electrochemical systems are a feasible choice for treating pharmaceutical wastewater. Many electrochemical approaches exist now to remediate rivers polluted by refractory organic contaminants, like pharmaceutical micro-pollutants, which have become a severe environmental problem. The first part of this investigation provides the bibliometric analysis of the title search from 1970 to 2021 for keywords such as wastewater and electrochemical. We have provided information on relations between keywords, countries, and journals based on three fields plot, inter-country co-authorship network analysis, and co-occurrence network visualization. The second part introduces electrochemical water treatment approaches customized to these very distinct discarded flows, containing how processes, electrode materials, and operating conditions influence the results (with selective highlighting cathode reduction and anodic oxidation). This section looks at how electrochemistry may be utilized with typical treatment approaches to improve the integrated system's overall efficiency. We discuss how electrochemical cells might be beneficial and what compromises to consider when putting them into practice. We wrap up our analysis with a discussion of known technical obstacles and suggestions for further research.

Derivatives of metal-organic frameworks for heterogeneous Fenton-like processes: From preparation to performance and mechanisms in wastewater purification - A mini review

Organic pollution is an ever-growing issue in aquatic environment, Fenton-like processes have gained widespread acceptance due to their high oxidative potential and environmental compatibility. Derivatives of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysts, which have advantages of large surface area, diversity of structures, and abundant active sites. This work focuses on the recent advances in MOFs derivatives including metal compounds and metal incorporated carbons for Fenton-like processes. First, preparation strategies, structures and compositions are introduced. And then, the removal of organic pollutant in Fenton, electro-Fenton, and photo-Fenton process catalyzed by MOFs derivative is summarized, respectively. The contents particularly devote efforts to build connections among preparation, structures, compositions, and performance. Furthermore, the mechanisms of improving performance are discussed in detail. Finally, the perspectives of MOFs derivatives toward Fenton-like applications are proposed.

A High Flux Electrochemical Filtration System Based on Electrospun Carbon Nanofiber Membrane for Efficient Tetracycline Degradation

In this work, an electrochemical filter using an electrospun carbon nanofiber membrane (ECNFM) anode fabricated by electrospinning, stabilization and carbonization was developed for the removal of antibiotic tetracycline (TC). ECNFM with 2.5 wt% terephthalic acid (PTA) carbonized at 1000 °C (ECNFM-2.5%-1000) exhibited higher tensile stress (0.75 MPa) and porosity (92.8%), more graphitic structures and lower electron transfer resistance (23.52 Ω). Under the optimal condition of applied voltage 2.0 V, pH 6.1, 0.1 mol L−1 Na2SO4, initial TC concentration 10 ppm and membrane flux 425 LMH, the TC removal efficiency of the electrochemical filter of ECNFM-2.5%-1000 reached 99.8%, and no obvious performance loss was observed after 8 h of continuous operation. The pseudo-first-order reaction rate constant in flow-through mode was 2.28 min−1, which was 10.53 times higher than that in batch mode. Meanwhile, the energy demand for 90% TC removal was only 0.017 kWh m−3. TC could be converted to intermediates with lower developmental toxicity and mutagenicity via the loss of functional groups (-CONH2, -CH3, -OH, -N(CH3)2) and ring opening reaction, which was mainly achieved by direct anodic oxidation. This study highlights the potential of ECNFM-based electrochemical filtration for efficient and economical drinking water purification.

Bifunctional nickel foam composite cathode co-modified with CoFe@NC and CNTs for electrocatalytic degradation of atrazine over wide pH range

Bifunctional cathodes have attracted widespread interest in the heterogeneous electro-Fenton (hetero-EF) process. In this study, the bifunctional composite cathode co-modified with N-doped carbon CoFe alloy (CoFe@NC) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), designated as CoFe@NC-CNTs/CNTs/NF, integrating hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) synthesis and catalysis, was prepared for efficient degradation of atrazine (ATZ) under the near-neutral condition (pH_i = 5.9). The morphology properties, crystal structure, microstructures, and elemental composition were determined. The influences of current density, initial pH value, different anions, and water matrix on the removal of ATZ were systematically studied. In the hetero-EF process, high removal efficiencies of ATZ can be achieved over the broad pH range (3-9) under the current density of 4.5 mA cm^-2. The removal efficiency of ATZ remained at 90.2 ± 0.3% after 8 cycles under the near-neutral condition (pH_i = 5.9). Radical quenching tests and EPR spectra have verified that both free radical pathways such as superoxide anion (O₂·^-) and hydroxyl radical (·OH) and non-radical pathway such as singlet oxygen (¹O₂) contributed to ATZ removal. The degradation pathways and catalytic mechanism were proposed. Toxicity evaluation and Escherichia coli growth test showed that the toxicity gradually decreased during the degradation process. This work provided a new thought for developing an efficient and stable bifunctional cathode to construct an in-situ hetero-EF system for pollutants removal over the wide pH range.

Enhanced oxygen reduction and methanol oxidation reaction over self-assembled Pt-M (M = Co, Ni) nanoflowers

Herein, we introduce a facile approach to synthesize a unique class of Pt-M (M = Ni, Co) catalysts with a nanoflower structure for boosting both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). By controlling the surface-active agents, we modified the functional groups surrounding the Pt atoms, tuned the alloying of Pt and the transition metals Ni and Co, and prepared two different kinds of nanodendrites. Their successful synthesis depends on the selection and amount of surfactants (hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)). Besides, by controlling reaction time, we also explored the forming procedures for Pt-Co globularia nanodendrite (Pt-Co GND) and Pt-Ni petalody nanodendrite (Pt-Ni PND). Our investigation highlights the importance of complex nanoarchitecture, which enables surface and interface modification to achieve excellent catalytic performance in fuel cell electrocatalysis. The characterization of the as-prepared catalysts reveals a high electrochemical surface area and mass activity (2041 mAmg_Pt^-1and 950 mAmg_Pt^-1 for Pt-Co GND and Pt-Ni PND, respectively, for ORR). Furthermore, Pt-Co GND showed a high MOR activity, with a mass activity value recorded at 1615 mAmg_Pt^-1 which is far superior to that for Pt/C. Moreover, both catalysts retain high activity after accelerated durability tests (ADTs). The electron transfer number was calculated by performing the rotating ring-disk electrode (RRDE) measurements. Due to abundant active sites of Pt, both Pt-Co GND and Pt-Ni PND exhibit a 4e^- pathway for ORR with electron transfer number of >3.95.
