Dynamics of pH on the oxidation of HS- with iron(III) chelates in anoxic conditions

Regenerative one-stage catalytic absorption process with cupric ions for removal of reduced sulfur compounds in polluted air

Reduced volatile sulfur compounds emitted from e.g. livestock production and biogas production facilities contribute to general air pollution and local odour nuisance. Improved technologies are required to mitigate the emissions of both hydrogen sulfide and organic sulfur compounds. The present study examines the oxidative absorption of reduced sulfur compounds, i.e. hydrogen sulfide, methanethiol and dimethyl sulfide in a wet oxidation process with cupric chloride. It was found that this process efficiently removes both hydrogen sulfide and methanethiol with removal efficiencies >94% under all process conditions tested, while the removal of dimethyl sulfide was in the range 20-40%. The main products determined were dimethyl disulfide, dimethyl trisulfide and elemental sulfur. It was shown that the process was more efficient than the similar process with ferric ions and higher removal could be obtained with lower residence times. Furthermore, though employing cupric ion as metal catalysts results in the production of gaseous sulfur compounds, it is estimated that this process is efficient for deodorization due to the higher odour threshold values of the product compounds and the pH range is optimal for gas streams containing CO2.

Nanocrystalline erdite from iron-rich sludge: Green synthesis, characterization and utilization as an efficient adsorbent of hexavalent chromium

A low-temperature hydrothermal process was developed to synthesize erdite adsorbent from a solid waste sludge contained 10.2% Fe, 6.2% Al and 1.4% Si, alongside 59.5% water content. At 90℃, adding Na₂S and NaOH could convert it into erdite nanorods with a diameter of 80 nm and a length of 100 nm. In the sludge, only Fe oxyhydroxide was involved in the formation of erdite, and the other Al/Si-bearing compounds were dissolved in an alkaline medium. The dissolved Al/Si-bearing compounds were further removed, forming faujasite so that the used medium was purified and then entirely recycled into the next conversion stage. No secondary waste was generated in the pilot-scale conversion, and the adsorption efficiency of the prepared products to wastewater with a high initial Cr(VI) concentration of 1000 mg/L was more than 99.5%. The adsorption data complied with the pseudo-second-order kinetics. During the wastewater treatment, hexavalent chromium anion diffused to erdite surface and replaced OH/SH groups of adjacent structural Fe to form a stable complex ligand. In addition, the redox reaction between hexavalent chromium and the -SH group occurred to generate a trivalent chromium complex on the Fe/S-bearing flocs surface.

Effect of Water Content on Properties of Homogeneous [bmim]Fe(III)Cl4–H2O Mixtures and Their Application in Oxidative Absorption of H2S

The potential of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrachloroferrate ([bmim]Fe(III)Cl4) for replacing an iron(III) chelate catalytic solution in the catalytic oxidation of H2S is attributed to its no side reaction and no degradation of the chelating agent. The catalytic oxidation product of water in non-aqueous [bmim]Fe(III)Cl4 possibly has an influence on the oxidative absorption of H2S. Water and hydrophobic [bmim]Fe(III)Cl4 mixtures at water volume percents from 40% to 70% formed separate phases after srirring, without affecting the oxidative absorption of hydrogen sulfide. Then, studies on the properties of homogeneous [bmim]Fe(III)Cl4–H2O mixtures at water volume percents in the range of 5.88–30% and above 80% reveal that these mixtures are both Brønsted and Lewis acids at vol % (H2O) ≤ 30%, and only Lewis acids at vol % (H2O) ≥ 80%. Raman spectra showed that [bmim]Fe(III)Cl4 was the dominating species at vol % (H2O) ≤ 30%, in contrast, [bmim]Fe(III)Cl4 decomposed into FeCl3·2H2O and [bmim]Cl at vol % (H2O) ≥ 80%. Further research on oxidative absorption of H2S by homogeneous [bmim]Fe(III)Cl4–H2O mixtures demonstrated that [bmim]Fe(III)Cl4 was reduced by H2S to [bmim]Fe(II)Cl4H and FeCl3·2H2O was reduced to FeCl2, at the same time, H2S was oxidized to S8. In addition, the decrease in acidity caused by increasing the water content increased the weight percent of absorbed H2S, and decreased volatile HCl emissions. However, it is difficult to prevent the suspended S8 generated at vol % (H2O) ≥ 80% from the formation of sulfur blockage. Therefore, oxidative absorption of H2S by [bmim]Fe(III)Cl4–H2O mixtures is feasible at vol % (H2O) < 80% without sulfur blockage.

Hydrosulfide oxidation pathways in oxic solutions containing iron(III) chelates

The role of dissolved oxygen (DO2) on the oxidation of hydrosulfide ions (HS-; C(HS-)0 = 50-150 micromol/L) into polysulfides (S(n)2-; n = 2-9), colloidal sulfur, and oxysulfur species with iron(III) trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexanetetraacetate (iron(III)-cdta; C(Fe(III)0 = 50-300 micromol/L) complexes in alkaline solutions (pH 9-10.2) was investigated at 25 +/- 1 degree C. At higher pH, oxygen was seen to slow down the hydrosulfide conversion rate. For instance, the HS- half-life was 24.8 min in a DO2-saturated iron(III)-cdta solution compared to 11.3 min in the corresponding anoxic solution (pH 10.2, C(HS-)0 = 80 micromol/L, C(Fe(III))0 = 200 micromol/L). In anoxia, HS- oligomerizes into chain-like polysulfides which behave as autocatalysts on the HS- conversion rates. The presence of DO2 disrupts the HS- oligomerization process by generating thiosulfate precursors from polysulfides, a pathway that impedes the HS- uptake. At lower alkaline pH where the hydroxide-free Fe(3+)cdta(4-) is the prevailing iron(III)-cdta species, the "iron(II)-cdta + DO2" oxidative reaction becomes crucial. Oxidative regeneration of iron(III) as Fe(3+)cdta(4-) (being more reactive than Fe(3+)OH(-)cdta(4-)) offsets to some extent the restrictive role of oxygen on the accumulation of polysulfides. Thiosulfate and sulfate were the main end-products for the current experimental conditions to the detriment of colloidal sulfur, which did not form in DO2-saturated solutions.
