Abstract
Hydrogel microspheres are biocompatible materials widely used in biological and medical fields. Emulsification and stirring are the commonly used methods to prepare hydrogels. However, the size distribution is considerably wide, the monodispersity and the mechanical intensity are poor, and the stable operation conditions are comparatively narrow to meet some sophisticated applications. In this paper, a T-shaped stepwise microchannel combined with a simple side microchannel structure is developed to explore the liquid-liquid dispersion mechanism, interfacial evolution behavior, satellite droplet formation mechanism and separation, and the eventual successful synthesis of dextran hydrogel microspheres. The effect of the operation parameters on droplet and microsphere size is comprehensively studied. The flow pattern and the stable operation condition range are given, and mathematical prediction models are developed under three different flow regimes for droplet size prediction. Based on the stable operating conditions, a microdroplet-based method combined with UV light curing is developed to synthesize the dextran hydrogel microsphere. The highly uniform and monodispersed dextran microspheres with good mechanical intensity are synthesized in the developed microfluidic platform. The size of the microsphere could be tuned from 50 to 300 μm with a capillary number in the range of 0.006-0.742. This work not only provides a facile method for functional polymeric microsphere preparation but also offers important design guidelines for the development of a robust microreactor.

Abstract
This study investigated the pore size dependence of the mass transfer of zinc myoglobin (ZnMb) in a single mesoporous silica particle through confocal fluorescence microspectroscopy. The ZnMb's fluorescence depth profile in the particle was analyzed by a spherical diffusion model, and the intraparticle diffusion coefficient was obtained. The intraparticle diffusion coefficient in the silica particle with various pore sizes (10, 15, 30, and 50 nm) was furthermore analyzed based on a pore and surface diffusion model. Although the mass transfer mechanism in all silica particles followed the pore and surface diffusion model, the adsorption and desorption of ZnMb affected the mass transfer depending on the pore size. The influence of the slow desorption of ZnMb became pronounced for large pore sizes (30 and 50 nm), which was revealed by simulation using a diffusion equation combined with the adsorption-desorption kinetics. The distribution of ZnMb was suppressed in small pore sizes (10 and 15 nm) owing to the adsorption of ZnMb onto the entrance of the pore. Thus, we revealed the mass transfer mechanism of ZnMb in the silica particle with different pore sizes.

Abstract
Magnetic ionic liquids (MILs) comprise a subcategory of ionic liquids (ILs) and contain a paramagnetic metal center allowing them to be readily manipulated by an external magnetic field. While MILs are popularly employed as solvents in catalysis, separations, and organic synthesis, most low viscosity combinations possess a hydrophilic character that limits their use in aqueous matrices. To date, no study has reported the synthesis and characterization of hydrophobic MILs with viscosities similar to those of hydrophilic MILs and organic solvents while simultaneously exhibiting enhanced magnetic and thermal properties. In this study, diglycolic acid esters are employed as ligands to chelate with paramagnetic metals to produce cations that are paired with metal chelates composed of hexafluoroacetylacetonate ligands to form MILs incorporating multiple metal centers in the cation and anion. Viscosity values below 31.6 cP were obtained for these solvents, the lowest ever reported for hydrophobic MILs. Solubilities in nonpolar solvents such as benzene were observed to be as high as 50% (w/v) MIL-to-solvent ratio while being insoluble in water at concentrations as low as 0.01% (w/v). Effective paramagnetic moment values for these solvents ranged from 5.33 to 15.56 Bohr magnetons (μB), with mixed metal MILs containing multiple lanthanides in the anion generally offering higher magnetic susceptibilities. MILs composed of ligands containing octyl substituents were found to possess thermal stabilities up to 190 °C. The synthetic strategies explored in this study exploit the highly tunable nature of the employed cation and anion pairs to design versatile ultra-low viscosity magnetoactive solvents that possess tremendous potential and applicability in liquid-liquid separation systems, catalysis, and microfluidics where the mechanical movement of the solvent can be easily facilitated using electromagnets.

Abstract
A simple and versatile strategy for controlled production of monodisperse ethyl cellulose (EC) microcapsules by a single-stage emulsification method has been developed. Monodisperse oil-in-water emulsions, obtained by a microfluidic device, are used as templates for preparing EC microcapsules. Oil-soluble ethyl acetate (EA) is miscible with water, so the interfacial mass transfer between EA and water occurs sufficiently, which leads to water molecules pass through the phase interface and diffuse into emulsion interior. Water molecules aggregate at the interface, and some merge into a large water drop in the central position of the emulsion. After evaporation of EA solvent, monodisperse EC microcapsules create large numbers of pits on the surface with a hollow structure. Curcumin is used as a model drug and embedded in the hollow structure. EC microcapsules have good, sustained drug release efficacy in a simulated intestinal environment, and the release process of EC microcapsules containing 6.14% drug-loaded capacity is fully consistent with the vitro drug release model. Such simple techniques for making EC microcapsules may open a window to the controlled preparation of other multifunctional microcapsules. Besides, it offers theoretical guidance for the study of EC microcapsules as drug carriers and expanding clinical application of curcumin.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) are widely used in the extraction of phenolic compounds from low-temperature coal tar (LTCT). However, both ILs and LTCT contain a certain amount of water. The existence of water may have a remarkable impact on the phenol separation performance of ILs with different structures. In this work, the capacity and selectivity for m-cresol, as well as the solubility of cumene and dodecane in different IL-H2O mixtures, were firstly calculated by the conductor-like screening model for real solvents (COSMO-RS) at infinite dilution. The calculation covers ILs with different anionic and anionic structures and different water contents. To explore the effect of water in IL on separation performance, 1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium acetate ([C2mim][Ac]) was selected as the representative IL, and then the molecular interactions between the [C2mim][Ac]-H2O mixture solvent and solute (including m-cresol, cumene, and dodecane) were analyzed by COSMO-RS. The results indicated that both water and m-cresol could form hydrogen bonds with [C2mim][Ac]. The competition between them leads to decreasing separation performance for m-cresol of the [C2mim][Ac]-H2O mixture with increasing water content. Moreover, through analyses of m-cresol extraction efficiency, distribution coefficient, selectivity, and entrainment of cumene and dodecane, the experimental results confirmed that the presence of water in [C2mim][Ac] had a negative effect on the separation of m-cresol. The viscosity and UV-vis spectra of the [C2mim][Ac]-H2O mixture were also measured. Water in ILs should be removed as much as possible to ensure a better dephenolization effect and avoid phenol containing wastewater.

Abstract
This work aims to synthesize S-(4-chlorophenyl)-(pyridin-2-yl) methanol (S-CPMA) in a green, economic, and efficient way. In the water-cyclohexane liquid-liquid system, recombinant Escherichia coli (E. coli) was used as a whole-cell catalyst and retained > 60% of its catalytic activity after five reuse cycles. In situ accumulation of the substrate/product in the organic phase effectively improves substrate tolerance and reduces product inhibition and toxicity. Meanwhile, a microreaction system consisting of membrane dispersion and three-dimensional (3D) bending-microchannel was developed to successfully generate droplet swarms with an average diameter of 30 μm. Large specific surface area provided high mass transfer efficiency between phases. While the analogous reaction in a traditional stirred tank required > 270 min to achieve a yield of > 99%, in this biphasic microreaction system, the yield reached 99.6% with a high enantiomeric excess (ee) of > 99% in only 80 min. Efficient synthesis was achieved by reducing the time by 70%.

Abstract
Immiscible liquid–liquid flows in microchannels are used extensively in various chemical and biological lab-on-a-chip systems when it is very important to predict the expected flow pattern for a variety of fluids and channel geometries. Commonly, biological and other complex liquids express non-Newtonian properties in a dispersed phase. Features and behavior of such systems are not clear to date. In this paper, immiscible liquid–liquid flow in a T-shaped microchannel was studied by means of high-speed visualization, with an aim to reveal the shear-thinning effect on the flow patterns and slug-flow features. Three shear-thinning and three Newtonian fluids were used as dispersed phases, while Newtonian castor oil was a continuous phase. For the first time, the influence of the non-Newtonian dispersed phase on the transition from segmented to continuous flow is shown and quantitatively described. Flow-pattern maps were constructed using nondimensional complex We0.4·Oh0.6 depicting similarity in the continuous-to-segmented flow transition line. Using available experimental data, the proposed nondimensional complex is shown to be effectively applied for flow-pattern map construction when the continuous phase exhibits non-Newtonian properties as well. The models to evaluate an effective dynamic viscosity of a shear-thinning fluid are discussed. The most appropriate model of average-shear-rate estimation based on bulk velocity was chosen and applied to evaluate an effective dynamic viscosity of a shear-thinning fluid. For a slug flow, it was found that in the case of shear-thinning dispersed phase at low flow rates of both phases, a jetting regime of slug formation was established, leading to a dramatic increase in slug length.

Abstract
Time evolution of the microscopic wetting velocity of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (EMI-TFSI) or water on a micrometer-scale line-patterned surface with a poly(3-sulfopropyl methacrylate) brush and a hydrophobic perfluoroalkyl monolayer was precisely measured by direct observation using optical microscopy and a selective dyeing method over a long period (178 days). When a liquid droplet was placed on the dyed line-patterned brush surface, the liquid penetrated and spread into the polymer brush layer, forming a precursor thin film that extended beyond the macroscopic contact line. The elongation proceeded in two stages by an adiabatic process followed by a diffusive process. The elongation distance X increased with time in proportion to t2.6 for water and t0.81 for EMI-TFSI during the adiabatic process. In a diffusive process, the advancing velocity of the precursor film was markedly reduced to be expressed as X ∝ t0.66 for water and X ∝ t0.21 for EMI-TFSI, indicating that the diffusive process was affected by the energy dissipation of the wetting system. The high viscosity and the strong molecular interaction of EMI-TFSI with the polymer brush gave a large entropy change during the wetting process to result in a slower spreading velocity.

Experimental Studies of Droplet Formation Process and Length for Liquid–Liquid Two-Phase Flows in a Microchannel. ENERGIES 2021. Abstract
In this study, changes in the droplet formation mechanism and the law of droplet length in a two-phase liquid–liquid system in 400 × 400 μm standard T-junction microchannels were experimentally studied using a high-speed camera. The study investigated the effects of various dispersed phase viscosities, various continuous phase viscosities, and two-phase flow parameters on droplet length. Two basic flow patterns were observed: slug flow dominated by the squeezing mechanism, and droplet flow dominated by the shear mechanism. The dispersed phase viscosity had almost no effect on droplet length. However, the droplet length decreased with increasing continuous phase viscosity, increasing volume flow rate in the continuous phase, and the continuous-phase capillary number Cac. Droplet length also increased with increasing volume flow rate in the dispersed phase and with the volume flow rate ratio. Based on the droplet formation mechanism, a scaling law governing slug and droplet length was proposed and achieved a good fit with experimental data.

Abstract
This study demonstrates the possibility of “contactless” mass transfer between two aqueous slugs (droplets) separated by an oil slug in Taylor flow inside milli-channels. Separation of the alternating aqueous slugs at the outlet was performed by switching a couple of solenoid valves at branched outlets according to signals obtained by an optical sensor at the branch. Transfer of bromothymol blue (BTB) from acidic to basic aqueous slugs was performed for demonstration. In some cases, aqueous slugs separated by oil, merged catching on each other due to the velocity difference. Interfacial tension which was affected by the solute concentration was responsible for the velocity difference. Position-specific mass transfer activity at the rear end of the aqueous slugs was found on the course of the experiment. A meandering channel decreased the velocity difference and enhanced mass transfer. Almost complete (93%) transfer of BTB was achieved within a short residence time of several minutes under optimized conditions. The presented system opens a way for advanced separation using minimum amounts of the oil phase and allows concentrating the solute by altering relative lengths of the sender and receiver slugs.

Abstract
The effect of the slip lengths of both continuous and dispersed phases on droplet formation in microfluidic T-junctions is investigated by a volume of fluid method. Results reveal that, in a dripping regime, the droplet size is mainly influenced by the slip length of the continuous phase and increases with it. In a squeezing regime, the droplet size decreases with the slip lengths of both phases. The effects of the slip lengths of both phases on droplet generation are systematically discussed and summarized. The elongation rate of the thread can be decreased with an increase of slip lengths in both dripping and squeezing regimes, which is beneficial to improve droplet monodispersity. The monodispersity of droplets can deteriorate when the slip length of either phase is small and can be improved by increasing the slip length of the other phase.

Role of Solid Wall Properties in the Interface Slip of Liquid in Nanochannels. MICROMACHINES 2018; 9:mi9120663. Abstract
A two-dimensional molecular dynamics model of the liquid flow inside rough nanochannels is developed to investigate the effect of a solid wall on the interface slip of liquid in nanochannels with a surface roughness constructed by rectangular protrusions. The liquid structure, velocity profile, and confined scale on the boundary slip in a rough nanochannel are investigated, and the comparison of those with a smooth nanochannel are presented. The influence of solid wall properties, including the solid wall density, wall-fluid coupling strength, roughness height and spacing, on the interfacial velocity slip are all analyzed and discussed. It is indicated that the rough surface induces a smaller magnitude of the density oscillations and extra energy losses compared with the smooth solid surface, which reduce the interfacial slip of liquid in a nanochannel. In addition, once the roughness spacing is very small, the near-surface liquid flow dominates the momentum transfer at the interface between liquid and solid wall, causing the role of both the corrugation of wall potential and wall-fluid coupling strength to be less obvious. In particular, the slip length increases with increasing confined scales and shows no dependence on the confined scale once the confined scale reaches a critical value. The critical confined scale for the rough channel is larger than that of the smooth scale.

Abstract
Mixed-mode phases have become very popular in the last decade, and the number of new mixed/multi-mode sorbents is growing fast. Unlike single-mode stationary phases, perfectly suited for the separation of the analytes possessing similar physicochemical properties, for instance reversed-phase chromatography for hydrophobic solutes, mixed-mode sorbents providing multimodal interactions can render better separation selectivity for complex mixtures of solutes differing significantly in their physicochemical characteristics. The most frequent modern mixed-mode stationary phases are di/tri-mode sorbents embracing the following interactions, hydrophobic, electrostatic (coulombic), and hydrophilic. According to their structures, it is possible to distinguish silica-based, polymer-based, hybrid, and monolithic mixed-mode stationary phases. Herewith, newly synthesized mixed-mode sorbents developed within the last two and half years are categorized, discussed, and summarized. The main attention is devoted to the description of the synthetic routes and characterization methods applied for the new stationary phases.
