Reactor conceptual design by optimization for hydrogen production through intensified sorption- and membrane-enhanced water-gas shift reaction

New insights into mechanism of emerging pollutant polybrominated diphenyl ether inhibiting sludge dark fermentation

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), derived from electronics, furniture, etc., are detected with high level in excess sludge (ES). In this work, the influence of PBDEs on ES dark fermentation (ESDF) hydrogen production and the related key mechanisms were explored. The result shows PBDEs exposure reduced hydrogen production, and hydrogen accumulation decreased from 17.6 mL/g in blank to 12.3 mL/g with 12.0 mg/Kg PBDEs. PBDEs induced the reactive oxygen species production, which directly led to cell inactivation and reduced hydrogen production. Furthermore, PBDEs decreased ES disintegration, hydrolysis, acidification and homoacetogenic processes and inhibited the activities of enzymes related to hydrogen production. PBDEs also affected the diversity and richness of microbial communities in dark fermentation systems, especially high doses of PBDEs reduced the relative abundance of microorganisms associated with hydrogen production. In conclusion, PBDEs reduce hydrogen generation from ES.

Evaluating the effect of fluoxetine on mesophilic anaerobic dark biohydrogen fermentation of excess sludge

Recently, the influence behavior of new pollutants in the environment has been widely concerned. However, the effect of antidepressants widely detected in excess sludge (ES) on biohydrogen production from anaerobic dark fermentation has never been explored. To fill this gap, fluoxetine (FLX), a typical antidepressant, was selected to evaluate its effect on ES mesophilic anaerobic dark biohydrogen fermentation. The results showed that FLX reduced biohydrogen production even at low content (0.1 mg/Kg). The biohydrogen yield was only 12.8 mL/g in the 1.8 mg/Kg (based on total suspended solids) FLX group, decreased by about 34.7%, compared with the control group (without FLX). Further mechanism investigation implied that high levels (more than 0.6 mg/Kg) of FLX reduced every step associated with the biohydrogen production. FLX reduced the concentration of ammonia nitrogen and phosphate in fermentation broth. FLX also had a significant negative effect on enzyme activity in ES dark fermentation.

The Effect of the Temperature and Moisture to the Permeation Properties of PEO-Based Membranes for Carbon-Dioxide Separation

An increased demand for energy in recent decades has caused an increase in the emissions of combustion products, among which carbon-dioxide is the most harmful. As carbon-dioxide induces negative environmental effects, like global warming and the greenhouse effect, a decrease of the carbon-dioxide emission has emerged as one of the most urgent tasks in engineering. In this work, the possibility for the application of the polymer-based, dense, mixed matrix membranes for flue gas treatment was tested. The task was to test a potential decrease in the permeability and selectivity of a mixed-matrix membrane in the presence of moisture and at elevated temperature. Membranes are based on two different poly(ethylene oxide)-based polymers filled with two different zeolite powders (ITR and IWS). An additive of detergent type was added to improve the contact properties between the zeolite and polymer matrix. The measurements were performed at three different temperatures (30, 60, and 90 °C) under wet conditions, with partial pressure of the water equal to the vapor pressure of the water at the given temperature. The permeability of carbon-dioxide, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen was measured, and the selectivity of the carbon-dioxide versus other gases was determined. Obtained results have shown that an increase of temperature and partial pressure of the vapor slightly increase both the selectivity and permeability of the synthesized membranes. It was also shown that the addition of the zeolite powder increases the permeability of carbon-dioxide while maintaining the selectivity, compared to hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen.

Rapid Multi-Objective Optimization of Periodically Operated Processes Based on the Computer-Aided Nonlinear Frequency Response Method

The dynamic optimization of promising forced periodic processes has always been limited by time-consuming and expensive numerical calculations. The Nonlinear Frequency Response (NFR) method removes these limitations by providing excellent estimates of any process performance criteria of interest. Recently, the NFR method evolved to the computer-aided NFR method (cNFR) through a user-friendly software application for the automatic derivation of the functions necessary to estimate process improvement. By combining the cNFR method with standard multi-objective optimization (MOO) techniques, we developed a unique cNFR–MOO methodology for the optimization of periodic operations in the frequency domain. Since the objective functions are defined with entirely algebraic expressions, the dynamic optimization of forced periodic operations is extraordinarily fast. All optimization parameters, i.e., the steady-state point and the forcing parameters (frequency, amplitudes, and phase difference), are determined rapidly in one step. This gives the ability to find an optimal periodic operation around a sub-optimal steady-state point. The cNFR–MOO methodology was applied to two examples and is shown as an efficient and powerful tool for finding the best forced periodic operation. In both examples, the cNFR–MOO methodology gave conditions that could greatly enhance a process that is normally operated in a steady state.
