Analysis of immiscible liquid-liquid mixing in stirred tanks by Electrical Resistance Tomography

A Novel Experimental Apparatus for Characterizing Flow Regime in Mechanically Stirred Tanks through Force Sensors

Pressure fluctuations in a mixing tank can provide valuable information about the existing flow regime within the tank, which in turn influences the degree of mixing that can be achieved. In the present work, we propose a prototype for identifying the flow regime in mechanically stirred tanks equipped with four vertical baffles through the characterization of pressure fluctuations. Our innovative proposal is based on force sensors strategically placed in the baffles of the mixing tank. The signals coming from the sensors are transmitted to an electronic module based on an Arduino UNO development board. In the electronic module, the pressure signals are conditioned, amplified and sent via Bluetooth to a computer. In the computer, the signals can be plotted or stored in an Excel file. In addition, the proposed system includes a moving average filtering and a hierarchical bottom-up clustering analysis that can determine the real-time flow regime (i.e., the Reynolds number, Re) in which the tank was operated during the mixing process. Finally, to demonstrate the versatility of the proposed prototype, experiments were conducted to identify the Reynolds number for different flow regimes (static, laminar, transition and turbulent), i.e., 0≤Re≤ 42,955. Obtained results were in agreement with the prevailing consensus on the onset and developed from different flow regimes in mechanically stirred tanks.

Review of applications of electrical resistance tomography to chemical engineering

In spite of decades of study and investigation, the research on tomography and electrical resistance tomography (ERT) in particular, remains to be focus of immense scientific significance. ERT provides the ability to measure conductivity distribution inside a process plant and delivers time evolving multidimensional information. Such important and otherwise inaccessible information enhances critical process knowledge whilst improving the design and function of the process equipment. ERT has been employed in a variety of fields including chemical engineering. This paper reviews previous research carried out on the application of ERT within the chemical engineering arena. The applications are classified based on the objective of ERT measurements, the unit operations ERT has been utilized on, the media under examination, and also other technologies and data processing techniques used in combination with ERT. The objective of this taxonomy is to offer the reader with a broad insight into the current situation of ERT related research and developed applications in the chemical engineering field and to assist in the identification of research gaps for future investigation.

Data on the hydrodynamics and power consumption induced by modified anchor impellers in cylindrical tanks

In the present paper, the data assembled concerning the stirring of a viscous Newtonian fluid in cylindrical and unbaffled tanks is disclosed. The stirring is ensured by close-clearance impellers rotating at low speeds. This is a comparative study between three modified geometries of anchor impellers aiming to enhance the fluid circulation in the whole vessel volume, and especially at the lower part of the vessel. The suggested geometrical configurations aim also to keep the energy consumption at its minimum. The data summarized here provides an additional knowledge for the best selection of stirrers for a specified industrial application.

Real-Time Fault Detection and Diagnosis of CaCO3 Reactive Crystallization Process by Electrical Resistance Tomography Measurements

In the present research work, an electrical resistance tomography (ERT) system is utilized as a means for real-time fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) during a reactive crystallization process. The calcium carbonate crystallization is part of the carbon capture and utilization scheme where process monitoring and malfunction diagnostics strategies are presented. The graphical logic representation of the fault tree analysis methodology is used to develop the system failure states. The measurement consistency due to the use of a single electrode from a set of ERT electrodes for malfunction identification is experimentally and quantitatively investigated based on the sensor sensitivity and standard deviation criteria. Electrical current measurements are employed to develop a LabVIEW-based process automation program by using the process-specific knowledge and historical process data. Averaged electrical current is correlated to the mechanical failure of the stirrer through standard deviation evaluation, and slopes of the measured data are used to monitor the pump and concentrations status. The performance of the implemented methodology for detecting the induced faults and abnormalities is tested at different operating conditions, and a basic signal-based alarming technique is developed.

The Liquid–Liquid Dispersion Homogeneity in a Vessel Agitated by a High-Shear Sawtooth Impeller

The agitation of immiscible liquids or solid suspensions is a frequent operation in chemical and metallurgical industries. The product quality yield and economy of the processes are significantly affected by mixing conditions. Prediction of mean drop size distribution (DSD) during agitation is fundamental for processes in many branches of industry where the mass transfer is crucial. This contribution aims to analyze the homogeneity of a dispersed system in a vessel agitated by a high-shear sawtooth impeller. The homogeneity of liquid–liquid dispersion is determined by comparison of Sauter mean diameters and drop size distribution (DSD) from different measured regions and for various dispersion times. The experiments were carried out in a baffled vessel for various impeller speeds. The sizes of droplets were obtained by the in-situ measurement technique and by the image analysis (IA) method.
