A circle/sphere populating method to generate 2D/3D stochastic microstructures

A circle/sphere populating method is proposed to generate 2D/3D stochastic microstructures. The proposed method uses circles/spheres as the basic elements and generates microstructure features through the populating process of the circles/spheres. In the populating process, the cores are first generated randomly and circles/spheres start to populate around the cores or the previous generation's circles/spheres. The populating process is controlled by the input parameters including the volume fraction, core number, circle/sphere size distribution, circle/sphere populating distance distribution, circle/sphere populating number, and populating direction constraint angle. The proposed method was compared with the QSGS method and random circle/sphere method in 2-dimensional (2D) and 3-dimensional (3D) cases. The proposed method shows advantages in generating microstructures with clear feature geometries and boundaries. Furthermore, parametric studies are conducted in 2D and 3D to investigate the effect of input parameters on the generated microstructures. With the consideration of circle/sphere spatial distributions, the proposed method can achieve different degrees of feature clustering and agglomerating. A wide range of microstructure morphologies can be achieved by adjusting the input parameters. A more accurate description of the features in the microstructures can be achieved without the involvement of the annealing-based optimization process. As a case study, the proposed method was used to generate sandstone microstructures with different grain size distributions and spatial distributions, and the permeability of generated sandstone was analyzed. Furthermore, the proposed method was applied to generate the microstructure model with a target radial distribution function to demonstrate its computational efficiency by comparing it with the random sphere method and simulated annealing based method.

An Analytical Model for Hysteretic Pressure-Sensitive Permeability of Nanoporous Media

Hysteretic pressure-sensitive permeability of nanohybrids composed of substantial nanopores is critical to characterizing fluid flow through nanoporous media. Due to the nanoscale effect (gas slippage), complex and heterogeneous pore structures of nanoporous media, the essential controls on permeability hysteresis of nanohybrids are not determined. In this study, a hysteretic pressure sensitive permeability model for nitrogen flow through dry nanoporous media is proposed. The derived model takes into account the nanoscale effect and pore deformation due to effective stress. The model is validated by comparing it with the experimental data. The results show that the calculated permeability and porosity are consistent with the measured results with the maximum relative error of 6.08% and 0.5%, respectively. Moreover, the hysteretic pressure-sensitive permeability of nanohybrids is related to effective stress, gas slippage, pore microstructure parameters, grain quadrilateral angle, and the loss rate of grain quadrilateral angle. The nanoscale effect is crucial to the permeability of nanoporous media. In addition, as impacted by the comprehensive impact of multiple relevant influential parameters, permeability during the pressure unloading process is not a monotonous function but presents complicated shapes. The proposed model can explain, quantify, and predict the permeability hysteresis effect of nanoporous media reasonably well.

Investigating the effects of effective stress on pore-dependent permeability measurements of crushed coal

The accurate determination of permeability is one of the parameters essential for the study of fluid flow and transport state. However, a large number of fractured coal bodies are faced during the production of coal mines. The study of permeability of these special media composed of grains of a certain size, whose structure is different from that of raw coal, has been in the exploratory stage. In this paper, inspired by the calculation method of median particle size and the calculation principle of KC's equation, we calculate the permeability parameters of broken coal particles. It is considered that its permeability is closely related to the compaction and re-crushing process of skeletal grains. The lateral limit compression test of the crushed coal body was designed, and the pore-dominated permeability calculation method was given to reveal the mechanism of the action of the effective stress. The dependence relationship between the effective stress and the pore-correlation permeability is obtained by data analysis, and the force and deformation process of the crushed coal grain media is described. In contrast to the conventional Darcy series of permeability discussions, our approach excludes the influence of fluid factors on the permeability of porous media. The permeability of porous media is considered to be determined only by its own pore structure.
