Abstract
OBJECTIVES Antroduodenal manometry (ADM) measures antral and small bowel motility and is clinically used to evaluate upper gastrointestinal (UGI) symptoms. We aimed to evaluate its utility in guiding treatment, predicting response, and association with clinical findings. METHODS Retrospective review of 200 children undergoing ADM. ADM interpretation and parameters were compared to outcomes (response to first therapy after ADM and overall response), predominant symptom (group A, abdominal distention and/or vomiting and group B, abdominal pain and/or nausea), etiology (idiopathic or with known comorbidity), and ADM indication [suspected chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIPO) or unexplained UGI symptoms]. RESULTS We found an association between a normal intestinal phase III of the migrating motor complex (MMC) and idiopathic etiology, group B symptoms and unexplained UGI symptoms. No variable was associated with initial successful response. However, normal small bowel phase III of the MMC and idiopathic etiology were associated with overall successful response to treatment (including feeding tolerance and weaning of parenteral nutrition). No antral ADM parameter was associated with outcomes or other comparisons. The time to overall successful treatment response was significantly shorter in patients with a normal ADM and presence of a normal phase III of the MMC. CONCLUSIONS The presence of the phase III of the MMC was the single ADM parameter predictive of overall treatment response, also associated to group B symptoms and idiopathic etiology. Our findings suggest that small bowel ADM parameters are more useful to predict outcomes and ADM should be performed primarily in patients presenting with abdominal distention and/or vomiting and those being evaluated for CIPO.

Abstract
Introduction Standard medical therapy (SMT) in children with functional abdominal pain disorders (FAPD) includes cyproheptadine and amitriptyline. While percutaneous electrical nerve field stimulation (PENFS) has shown benefit, no study has compared outcomes of PENFS to SMT. We aimed to examine changes in abdominal pain, nausea and disability before and after treatment and compare outcomes between treatments. Methods The records of FAPD patients ages 11-21 years, treated with 4 weeks of PENFS, cyproheptadine or amitriptyline were reviewed. Outcomes were evaluated using validated questionnaires [Abdominal Pain Index (API), Nausea Severity Scale (NSS), and the Functional Disability Inventory (FDI)] at baseline and follow-up within 3 months (FU). Result Of 101 patients, 48% received PENFS, 31% cyproheptadine and 21% received amitriptyline. Median ages were 17 (15-19), 16 (15-18) and 15 (11-16) years respectively and the majority were females (75%, 90% and 52% respectively). In the PENFS group, API (p = 0.001), NSS (p = 0.059) and FDI (p = 0.048) were significantly lower at FU. API (p = 0.034) but not NSS and FDI (p > 0.05) decreased significantly at FU in the amitriptyline group. API, NSS and FDI did not change significantly with cyproheptadine at FU (p > 0.05). FU API scores were lower in PENFS vs. cyproheptadine (p = 0.04) but not vs. amitriptyline (p = 0.64). The FDI scores were significantly lower in the amitriptyline vs. cyproheptadine group (p = 0.03). Conclusion Therapy with PENFS showed improvements in abdominal pain, nausea and disability while amitriptyline showed improvements in abdominal pain within 3 months of treatment. PENFS was more effective than cyproheptadine in improving abdominal pain. Amitriptyline improved disability scores more than cyproheptadine and showed promise for treatment. PENFS may be a good non-pharmacologic alternative for FAPD.

Abstract
PURPOSE Nausea is a symptom that is often experienced but misunderstood. Its impact is amplified in pediatric oncology patients. Nausea assessments in pediatric oncology are few and not yet widely used. The Baxter Retching Faces (BARF) scale holds promise and is used in some pediatric oncology units. The purpose of this evidence-based practice project was to evaluate the impact of the BARF scale on nursing assessments in inpatient pediatric hematology/oncology and stem cell transplant settings. CONCLUSIONS Project work took place on one hematology/oncology unit and one stem cell transplant unit. Thirty nurses completed the acceptability of intervention measure (AIM), intervention appropriateness measure (IAM), and feasibility of intervention measure (FIM) to provide initial feedback on the BARF scale. Nurses used the BARF scale over an 8-week period. Patient demographics and BARF scores were collected during nausea assessments. Twenty nurses completed AIM/IAM/FIM scores postintervention. There were no significant changes in scores, though nurses stated that the tool was easy to use and provided valuable symptom feedback. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Symptom management will continue to be a challenge in the pediatric setting given developmental and disease-specific considerations inherent to the specialty. While this small-scale project did not achieve statistical significance, the evidence and feedback from nursing staff present a compelling case that efforts to investigate and integrate improved methods of assessing nausea and other problematic symptoms are needed to enhance nursing practice and impact patient-centered outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS The potential effectiveness of gut-directed hypnotherapy (HT) is unknown for pediatric chronic nausea. This randomized controlled trial compared HT with standard medical treatment (SMT). METHODS One hundred children (ages, 8-18 y) with chronic nausea and fulfilling functional nausea (FN) or functional dyspepsia (FD) criteria were allocated randomly (1:1) to HT or SMT, with a 3-month intervention period. Outcomes were assessed at baseline, at the halfway point, after treatment, and at the 6- and 12-month follow-up evaluation. Children scored nausea symptoms in a 7-day diary. The primary outcome was treatment success, defined as a reduction in nausea of 50% or more, at the 12-month follow-up evaluation. Secondary outcomes included adequate relief of nausea. RESULTS After treatment and at the 6-month follow-up evaluation, there was a trend toward higher treatment success in the HT group compared with the SMT group (45% vs 26%, P = .052; and 57% vs 40%, P = .099, respectively). At 12 months, treatment success was similar in both groups (60% in the HT group and 55% in the SMT group; P = .667). In the FN group, significantly higher success rates were found for HT, but no differences were found in patients with FD. Adequate relief was significantly higher in the HT group than in the SMT group at the 6-month follow-up evaluation (children: 81% vs 55%, P = .014; parents: 79% vs 53%; P = .016), but not at the 12-month follow-up evaluation. CONCLUSIONS HT and SMT were effective in reducing nausea symptoms in children with FN and FD. In children with FN, HT was more effective than SMT during and after the first 6 months of treatment. Therefore, HT and SMT, applied separately or in combination, should be offered to children with FN as a treatment option (Clinical trials registration number: NTR5814).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nausea is a common complaint among children and is particularly prevalent in children with functional abdominal pain (FAP), with nearly half of children with FAP also endorsing nausea. Dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system, which can be indexed by heart rate variability (HRV), leads to abnormalities in gastric electrical activity that are associated with GI symptoms. AIMS To evaluate that relationship between nausea severity and HRV in adolescents and young adults with a history of FAP and to assess for sex differences. METHODS Participants were pediatric patients with a diagnosis of FAP who were recruited from a pediatric GI clinic between 1993 and 2007 for a prospective study of the course of FAP. Study analyses focused on the cross-sectional relationship between HRV, indexed by standard deviation of the R-R interval (SDRRI) and high-frequency (HF) power, and nausea severity collected during a follow-up visit in late adolescence and young adulthood. RESULTS Controlling for age and BMI, a significant nausea by sex interaction emerged for both SDRRI and HF power. Tests of conditional effects of nausea by sex showed that the inverse relation between nausea severity and both SDRRI and HF was significant for females but not for males. CONCLUSIONS This is the first study to evaluate the relationship between nausea severity and HRV. Greater nausea severity was associated with lower HRV in females but not in males. Further validation of these results may provide insight into novel treatment approaches for females with nausea that target vagal tone.

Abstract
Chronic abdominal pain is very common in children and adolescent and results in high personal and social costs. Most youth with chronic abdominal pain fulfill criteria for a functional abdominal pain disorder (FAPD) as defined by Rome criteria. These are complex conditions with a wide array of biological, psychological, and social factors contributing to the experience of pain. The purpose of the current review is to provide an overview of the pathophysiology of FAPDs and an up-to-date summary of the literature related to FAPDs in children and adolescents, with additional focus on several areas (eg, diet and probiotics) where patients and families frequently have questions or implement self-directed care. We also provide an approach to the assessment and treatment of pediatric FAPDs focusing on the robust literature regarding psychological interventions and much sparser literature regarding medication treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic nausea in adolescents with functional gastrointestinal disorders is an increasingly reported but poorly understood symptom that negatively affects quality of life. Functional gastrointestinal disorders are known to correlate closely with slow wave rhythm disturbances. The ability to characterize gastric electrophysiologic perturbations in functional nausea patients could provide potential diagnostic and therapeutic tools for nausea patients. METHODS We used high-resolution electrogastrograms (HR-EGG) to measure gastric slow wave parameters in pediatric chronic nausea patients and healthy subjects both pre- and postprandial. We computed the dominant frequency, percentage power distribution, gastric slow wave propagation direction, and speed from HR-EGG. KEY RESULTS We observed significant differences in the dominant frequency and power distributed in normal and bradyarrhythmia frequency ranges when comparing patients and healthy subjects. Propagation patterns in healthy subjects were predominantly anterograde, while patients exhibited a variety of abnormalities including retrograde, anterograde, and disrupted patterns. There was a significant difference in the preprandial mean slow wave direction between healthy subjects (222° ± 22°) and patients (103° ± 66°; p ˂ 0.01), although the postprandial mean direction between healthy subjects and patients was similar (p = 0.73). No significant difference in slow wave propagation speed was found between patients and healthy subjects in either pre- (p = 0.21) or postprandial periods (p = 0.75). CONCLUSIONS AND INFERENCES The spatiotemporal characterization of gastric slow wave activity using HR-EGG distinguishes symptomatic chronic nausea patients from healthy subjects. This characterization may in turn inform and direct clinical decision-making and lead to further insight into its pathophysiology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is an unmet need for a validated, test-specific symptom questionnaire to evaluate carbohydrate perception during breath tests. Our aim was to develop and validate a questionnaire for the assessment of symptoms after a provocative carbohydrate load. METHODS After a literature search and initial focus group-style interviews, five relevant complaints were identified. Responses were given on a Likert-type faces scale with a language children use and understand. Reliability, validity and responsiveness to change were established by the implementation of the questionnaire during breath tests in 215 pediatric subjects. Correlation between the questionnaire and a medical interview by a pediatrician who was blinded to the results of the questionnaire (n = 19) was determined. KEY RESULTS The questionnaire had good face and content validity (Lawshe ratio = 1). Intraclass correlation coefficients for test-retest reliability (n = 116) demonstrated good repeatability (P < .001), and effect sizes were small (Cohen's d < 0.15 for all symptoms). Convergent validity and discriminant validity were supported according to the multitrait-multimethod matrix method. The results obtained by the questionnaire correlated highly with the result of the medical interview (P < .001; Fisher's exact test). Cronbach's alpha was 0.81. Responsiveness was verified for the whole patient group and subgroups with medium to high effect sizes. CONCLUSIONS AND INFERENCES The paediatric Carbohydrate Perception Questionnaire (pCPQ) is a simple, test-specific questionnaire for a pediatric population. It is a valid instrument with excellent psychometric properties to assess gastrointestinal symptoms after carbohydrate ingestion. The pCPQ can replace non-validated symptom assessment during carbohydrate breath tests and allows a standardized diagnosis of carbohydrate intolerance.

Abstract
Paediatric functional abdominal pain disorders, currently referred to as disorders of gut-brain interaction, comprise irritable bowel syndrome, functional dyspepsia, abdominal migraine and functional abdominal pain not otherwise specified, as defined by the Rome IV diagnostic criteria. Functional abdominal pain disorders are common disorders with a prevalence of 3-16% depending on country, age and sex. A greater understanding of aetiopathogenesis and pathophysiology is emerging and includes intestinal components (inflammation, motility and the microbiota), central factors (psychological aspects, sensitization and/or differences in connectivity or activity of certain brain regions) as well as extrinsic factors (infections). In particular, the timing of disruption of the microbiota-gut-brain axis seems to be important. Diagnosis is challenging but is primarily based on clinical symptoms and exclusion of other organic causes, with an emphasis on avoiding unnecessary invasive diagnostic procedures. The available pharmacological interventions are limited in children and, therefore, management has focused on combined approaches, including mind-targeted interventions (hypnotherapy and cognitive behavioural therapy), diet (probiotics) and percutaneous electrical nerve field stimulation. The evidence for their clinical efficacy, although limited, is favourable, with positive impacts on symptoms and overall quality of life. The coming decades hold promise for improved understanding and management of these enigmatic disorders.

Abstract
Abdominal pain-predominant functional gastrointestinal disorders encompass a group of chronic conditions featuring abdominal pain where no serious gastrointestinal or intra-abdominal pathology is present. The Rome IV classification system defines and categorises this group based on symptomatology as: functional dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome, functional abdominal pain - not otherwise specified and abdominal migraine. These conditions can impact the functioning of the child and family significantly and are challenging to manage. Although the causes of these conditions are not clear, recent years have seen an improved understanding of underlying pathophysiology and identification of effective management options for these conditions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To detail common comorbidities and procedures performed to evaluate functional nausea in children. STUDY DESIGN In total, 63 children age 7-18 years seen in a tertiary care pediatric clinic who met Rome IV criteria for functional nausea prospectively completed an Intake Questionnaire, the Pediatric and Parent-Proxy PROMIS-25 Profile v 2.0, the Pediatric and Parent-Proxy Pediatric Sleep Disturbance-Short Form 4a, and the COMPASS 31 orthostatic intolerance scale to assess comorbidities. Medical records were reviewed for diagnostic tests performed to evaluate nausea and for additional comorbidities. Summary statistics were used to determine the most common comorbidities and diagnostic yield of the procedures. Intraclass correlation coefficients assessed agreement between parent and child reports on the PROMIS scales. RESULTS Patients with functional nausea experienced multisystem comorbidities. A majority reported abdominal pain, headache, orthostatic intolerance, fatigue, disturbed sleep, anxiety, constipation, allergies, and vomiting. Agreement between parent-proxy and child report of symptoms on PROMIS scales was good to excellent (intraclass correlation coefficients = .78-.83; all P < .001). Patients underwent extensive diagnostic testing: 96 endoscopic procedures, 199 radiologic tests, and 4 cholecystectomies. Most of the procedures were not diagnostically informative. CONCLUSIONS Children with functional nausea have comorbidities outside the gastrointestinal tract that warrant evaluation. Gastrointestinal diagnostic tests were of low-yield in identifying a cause. Understanding the relationship with comorbidities may provide insight into etiologies for the nausea and define clinical phenotypes to better tailor care.

Abstract
Nausea is a somatic sensation typically associated with the need to vomit in order to remove a toxin from the body. When nausea occurs in the absence of a specific structural cause or toxin, it is classified as a functional gastrointestinal disorder (FGID). Functional nausea was newly recognized in 2016 as a FGID in children and little is known about its prevalence, course or patient experiences. Nausea co-occurring with functional abdominal pain in childhood has been associated with long-term risk for anxiety and ongoing somatic symptoms into young adulthood. However, few studies have focused uniquely on the experience and impact of nausea on youth. The present study aimed to qualitatively understand the experiences of adolescent girls with functional nausea and their parents. Five mother-daughter dyads were recruited from a specialized pediatric gastroenterology clinic focused on nausea and completed semi-structured interviews. Interviews were transcribed and coded using interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA). Four main themes emerged: nausea interference, body frustration, misunderstanding of symptoms, and maternal helplessness and guilt. These themes were similar to prior studies on the experiences of youth with chronic pain but also indicated unique challenges due to nausea, such as significant food restriction and subsequent weight loss.

Abstract
Background Nausea is a common symptom in youth with chronic abdominal pain. The aims of the current study were to assess: 1) the frequency of nausea in patients with functional dyspepsia (FD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), respectively, as defined by Rome IV criteria; and, 2) relationships between nausea and mucosal inflammation as defined by antral and duodenal eosinophil and mast cell densities. A secondary aim was to assess relationships between nausea and other gastrointestinal symptoms, non-gastrointestinal somatic symptoms, and psychological dysfunction. Methods Records from patients with pain associated functional gastrointestinal disorders were retrospectively reviewed for gastrointestinal and somatic symptoms and anxiety, depression, and somatizations scores as assessed by the Behavior Assessment System for Children (BASC-2). In addition, previous gastric and mucosal biopsies were assessed for mast cell and eosinophil densities, respectively. Results 250 patients, ages 8 to 17 years, were assessed. Nausea was reported by 78% and was equally prevalent in those with FD alone, those with IBS alone, and those with both FD and IBS. Nausea was associated with increased mean (21.4 vs. 17.5) and peak (26.2 vs. 22.9) duodenal mast cell densities as compared those without nausea. Nausea was also associated with a wide variety of individual gastrointestinal symptoms, as well as headaches, fatigue, and dizziness. Lastly, nausea was associated with elevated self-report scores for anxiety (55.2 vs. 50.0), depression (50.2 vs. 46.1), and somatization (70.3 vs. 61.8). Conclusions Nausea is common in children and adolescents with pain-associated FGIDs as defined by Rome IV and is not unique to either FD or IBS. Nausea is associated with increased mucosal mast cell density, non-gastrointestinal somatic symptoms, and psychologic dysfunction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Functional abdominal pain disorders (FAPDs) and functional defecation disorders (FDDs) are common in children and adolescents, but prevalence rates from the Caribbean are lacking. Therefore, our aim was to determine the prevalence of FAPDs and FDDs in adolescents in Curacao and to assess the influence of psychosocial factors on the prevalence of FAPDs and FDDs. METHODS The prevalence of FAPDs and FDDs in children and adolescents living in Curacao, ages 11 to 18 years, was assessed using the Rome IV Questionnaire on Pediatric Gastrointestinal Disorders (RIV-QPGD). FAPDs and FDDs were diagnosed according to the Rome IV criteria. Sociodemographic characteristics, somatic symptoms, early adverse life events, stressful life events, and physical and emotional abuse were evaluated as associated factors. RESULTS Out of 946 questionnaires distributed, 783 were included for further analysis. The mean age of adolescents was 14.7 years (±1.6) with 61.7% being girls. A total of 266 adolescents (34%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 30.7-37.5) met Rome IV criteria for at least 1 FAPD or FDD. Twenty-nine adolescents (3.7%) qualified for 2 functional gastrointestinal disorders. Functional constipation (18.6%) and irritable bowel syndrome (12.3%) were the most prevalent disorders. After multivariate logistic regression analyses, dizziness (odds ratio [OR] 1.84, 95% CI 1.28-2.64) was significantly associated with having a FAPD or FDD. CONCLUSIONS FAPDs and FDDs are common in adolescents in Curacao. Dizziness is associated with the presence of a FAPD or FDD.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW To evaluate the impact of the implementation of the Rome IV criteria on pediatric gastrointestinal practice. RECENT FINDINGS In 2016, the Rome IV criteria were published, providing an update of symptom-based criteria to diagnose children with functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs). For neonates and toddlers, Wessel's criteria for diagnosing infant colic were abandoned, and a differentiation was made between toilet-trained and non-toilet-trained children in the diagnosis of functional constipation. For children and adolescents, two new disorders (functional nausea and functional vomiting) are described, and in the diagnosis of functional dyspepsia, pain does not have to be the chief complaint anymore. This change has made functional dyspepsia the most common functional abdominal pain disorder, exceeding the prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Lastly, the diagnosis of abdominal migraine was narrowed, causing an appropriate drop in its prevalence.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Vomiting can be a primary symptom or associated with various other functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs). The purpose of this review was to discuss the evidence for psychological treatments for vomiting in pediatric FGID. RECENT FINDINGS Vomiting of functional origin is an increasingly recognized symptom among children and adolescents. It is highly aversive and associated with disability and poor quality of life. Cognitive behavioral therapy, lifestyle modification (especially sleep), diaphragmatic breathing, and hypnosis can be helpful in preventing vomiting episodes and reducing disability. However, no randomized clinical trials have been performed. An evidence base for psychological treatments in children with vomiting of functional origin is highly needed. SUMMARY Increased evidence is demonstrating value and efficacy of incorporating psychogastroenterology practices into ongoing treatment plans for digestive conditions. Current psychological treatments are focused on prevention of vomiting through stress reduction and lifestyle modification, reduction of disability by limiting avoidance behaviours, as well as counteracting biological factors. However, psychological treatments have not been shown to be helpful during an acute vomiting episode. More research is needed to build an evidence base for psychological treatments in vomiting disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nausea frequently co-exists with functional abdominal pain disorders (FAPDs) and may be linked to a higher disease burden. This study aimed to prospectively compare multisystem symptoms, quality of life, and functioning in FAPDs with and without nausea. METHODS Adolescents ages 11-18 years fulfilling Rome III criteria for a FAPD were grouped by the presence or absence of chronic nausea. Subjects completed validated instruments assessing nausea (Nausea Profile Questionnaire = NPQ), quality of life (Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement Information System), functioning (Functional Disability Inventory), and anxiety (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children). Group comparisons were performed for instruments, multisystem symptoms, school absences, and clinical diagnoses. KEY RESULTS A total of 112 subjects were included; 71% reported chronic nausea. Patients with Nausea compared to No Nausea had higher NPQ scores (P ≤ 0.001), worse quality of life (P = 0.004), and greater disability (P = 0.02). State and trait anxiety scores were similar (P = 0.57, P = 0.25). A higher NPQ score correlated with poorer quality of life, more disability, and higher anxiety. Specific comorbidities were more common in Nausea vs No Nausea group: dizziness (81% vs 41%; P ≤ 0.001), concentrating difficulties (68% vs 27%; P ≤ 0.001), chronic fatigue (58% vs 20%; P = 0.01), and sleep disturbances (73% vs 48%; P = 0.02). The Nausea group reported more school absences (P = 0.001) and more commonly met criteria for functional dyspepsia (P = 0.034). CONCLUSION AND INFERENCES Nausea co-existing with FAPDs is associated with a higher extra-intestinal symptom burden, worse quality of life, and impaired functioning in children. Assessing and targeting nausea therapeutically is essential to improve outcomes in FAPDs.

Abstract
Nausea is a bothersome symptom that is commonly seen in the pediatric population. The pathophysiology of nausea is complex and involves the central nervous system, the enteric nervous system, gastrointestinal tract motility, and psychologic influences. Pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic therapies are available for treating nausea. Mind-body interventions (hypnosis, biofeedback), botanicals and supplements (ginger, enteric-coated peppermint oil), aromatherapy, and acupuncture have emerging evidence for effectively treating pediatric nausea. Abstract
BACKGROUND Pediatric functional abdominal pain disorders (FAPDs) are disorders of brain-gut dysregulation. Psychological factors are known to be related to etiology, maintenance, and exacerbation of pediatric FAPDs. With the evolving literature in the past two decades, a better understanding has emerged of precisely which psychological factors are associated with childhood FAPDs. PURPOSE This narrative literature review summarizes the literature of both child and parent psychological factors in pediatric FAPD. Where anxiety and depression were major targets in the older literature, present-day focus is increasingly on pain-specific cognitions and coping strategies including disease threat and catastrophizing. In addition, parental reaction to a child's pain is increasingly recognized as an important moderator of a child's outcomes and has become an area for clinical intervention. Screening for these factors and integrative treatment approaches are recommended in childhood FAPD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND An increasing number of studies have suggested adverse effects of air pollution on mental health. Given the potentially negative impacts of ozone exposure on the immune and nervous system driven from animal experiments, ozone might also affect mental health. However, no systematic synthesis of the relevant literature has been conducted yet. This paper reviews the studies that assessed the link between ozone exposure and mental health thus far. METHODS We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis (PRISMA). PubMed, Web of Science, and EMBASE were systematically searched for epidemiological studies on ambient ozone exposure and mental or behavioral disorders according to the International Classification of Disease. The period was from January 1st, 1960 to December 14st, 2017. We evaluated the risk of bias by the Office of Health Assessment and Translation (OHAT) Approach and Navigation Guide for each included study. RESULTS The keyword search yielded 567 results. 31 papers met the selection criteria and were included in the review. We found only inconclusive evidence that ozone affects autism spectrum disorders, impairment of cognitive functions and dementia, depression, and suicide. The large heterogeneity of study designs, outcome definitions and study quality in general prevented us from conducting meta-analyses. CONCLUSIONS Current evidence for an association between ambient ozone exposure and mental health outcomes is inconclusive and further high quality studies are needed to assess any potential links given the strong biologic plausibility.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to develop a pediatric measure of chronic nausea severity, the Nausea Severity Scale (NSS), and evaluate its reliability and validity in youth with abdominal pain-related functional gastrointestinal disorders (AP-FGID). Pediatric patients (aged 11–17 years-old, n = 236) presenting to an outpatient clinic for evaluation of abdominal pain completed the NSS, Children’s Somatization Inventory (CSI), Functional Disability Inventory (FDI), Abdominal Pain Index (API), Patient-Report Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS), Anxiety and Depression Scales and the Pediatric Rome III Questionnaire for FGIDs. The NSS demonstrated good concurrent, discriminant, and construct validity, as well as good internal consistency. One-third (34%) of AP-FGID patients reported experiencing nausea “most” or “every day” in the previous two weeks. The severity of nausea was higher in females than males and correlated significantly with the severity of somatic symptoms, functional disability, anxiety, and depression. The NSS is a valid and reliable measure of nausea in children with AP-FGID.

Abstract
AIM Lactobacillus reuteri is a Gram-positive bacterium that naturally inhabits the human intestinal tract. This study assessed how effectively the probiotic L. reuteri DSM 17938 managed childhood functional abdominal pain (FAP). METHODS We recruited 54 children with a mean age 9.1 ± 3.8 years, who were diagnosed with FAP in the outpatient clinics of three university hospitals in Greece, Slovenia and Poland, according to the Rome III criteria, from January 2013 to December 2015. They were randomly assigned to receive either 2 × 108 colony-forming units of L. reuteri (n = 27) or a placebo (n = 27) for four weeks. RESULTS Both L. reuteri and the placebo significantly reduced the frequency and intensity of abdominal pain episodes at four and eight weeks compared to baseline (all p < 0.001). L. reuteri decreased the use of pain relieving drugs at four weeks and the number of child school and adult work absences at four and eight weeks, unlike the placebo, which achieved nonsignificant results. However, the difference between the groups did not reach significance. No side effects were recorded. CONCLUSION Both L. reuteri and the placebo were effective in alleviating pain in children with FAP, but only L. reuteri improved the child's and family's normal activities.
