Collaborative behavior, performance and engagement with visual analytics tasks using mobile devices

Interactive visualizations are external tools that can support users’ exploratory activities. Collaboration can bring benefits to the exploration of visual representations or visualizations. This research investigates the use of co-located collaborative visualizations in mobile devices, how users working with two different modes of interaction and view (Shared or Non-Shared) and how being placed at various position arrangements (Corner-to-Corner, Face-to-Face, and Side-by-Side) affect their knowledge acquisition, engagement level, and learning efficiency. A user study is conducted with 60 participants divided into 6 groups (2 modes $$\times$$ × 3 positions) using a tool that we developed to support the exploration of 3D visual structures in a collaborative manner. Our results show that the shared control and view version in the Side-by-Side position is the most favorable and can improve task efficiency. In this paper, we present the results and a set of recommendations that are derived from them.

Technology-Enhanced Learning: An Optimal CPS Learning Application

Collaborative problem-solving (CPS) is highly valued in the sustainability of learning to foster the key soft power of talent for the future. In this study, a CPS learning application was built to train and assess individuals with the aim of increasing CPS skills. For effective learning to take place, several issues need to be carefully considered, and these were investigated while testing the proposed application. This study examined the impact of collaborative interactions (CIs) (human–computer agent (HCA) and human–human (HH) interactions) on the CPS performance of students. Gender and learning styles, which may have interaction effects with CIs on CPS performance, were also explored. The results show that the students’ CPS performance in HCA was significantly greater than that in HH. The interaction effect between gender and CI was not significant. The impact of learning style on CPS performance in HH was not significant. In contrast, in HCA, students with verbal, global, and reflective learning styles performed significantly better on CPS tasks than did students with visual, sequential, and active learning styles. Finally, we discussed the optimal ways to teach CPS and the practical effects of a CPS learning application.

Investigating the individual trust and school performance in semi-virtual collaboration groups

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between individual trust of students in computer supported semi-virtual collaboration groups and student’s performance in school.

Design/methodology/approach

Longitudinal questionnaires and interviews are conducted during the case study. By analyzing the data from the questionnaires and the grade earned by the students, the sample students are ranked with respect to the trust level and individual performance. Furthermore, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test is used to compare individual trust level and performance in the computer supported semi-virtual collaborative environment.

Findings

The distribution of an individual’s trust level is roughly consistent with the distribution of the individual’s performance in the collaboration. Besides, the relationship between a student’s trust level and the student’s performance is positively correlated.

Research limitations/implications

This study integrates the issues of trust, school performance, and collaboration in an educational context. Furthermore, the conclusions drawn from this paper extend the literature of multiple disciplines including education, management, and psychology.

Practical implications

The conclusions could apply in the fields of education and management since the analysis revealed the relationship between an individual’s trust level and their performance.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the field of trust and collaboration research with a link to trust development and performance. The study also provides an insight into how to successfully improve the performance of student semi-virtual collaboration groups.

Use of tablet (iPad®) as a tool for teaching anesthesiology in an orthopedic rotation

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

The goal of this study was to compare scores on house staff evaluations of "overall teaching quality" during a rotation in anesthesia for orthopedics in the first six months (n=11 residents were provided with curriculum in a printed binder) and in the final six months (n=9 residents were provided with the same curriculum in a tablet computer (iPad, Apple®, Inc, Cupertino, Ca)).

METHODS

At the beginning of the two-week rotation, the resident was given an iPad containing: a syllabus with daily reading assignments, rotation objectives according to the ACGME core competencies, and journal articles. Prior to the study, these curriculum materials had been distributed in a printed binder. The iPad also provided peer reviewed internet sites and direct access to online textbooks, but was not linked to the electronic medical record. At the end of the rotation, residents anonymously answered questions to evaluate the rotation on an ordinal scale from 1 (unsatisfactory) to 5 (outstanding). All residents were unaware that the data would be analyzed retrospectively for this study.

RESULTS

The mean global rating of the rotation as assessed by "overall teaching quality of this rotation" increased from 4.09 (N=11 evaluations before intervention, SD 0.83, median 4, range 3-5) to 4.89 (N=9 evaluations after intervention, SD 0.33, median 5, range 4-5) p=0.04.

CONCLUSIONS

Residents responded favorably to the introduction of an innovative iPad based curriculum for the orthopedic anesthesia rotation. More studies are needed to show how such mobile computing technologies can enhance learning, especially since residents work at multiple locations, have duty hour limits, and the need to document resident learning in six ACGME core competencies.
