Radiology Technologists' Perspective on Medical Imaging Device Use and Related Technologies: a Cross-sectional Survey with Respect to Hospital Type

This study aimed to evaluate radiology technicians' view on the use of medical imaging devices and related technology. A total of 142 radiology technicians from Turkey were included on a voluntary basis in this cross-sectional questionnaire-based study. The questionnaire form elicited items on sociodemographic and occupational characteristics and personal opinions regarding the use of medical imaging devices and related technology. Majority of technicians agreed or strongly agreed that they prefer the latest technology medical imaging devices (32.4 and 54.2%) and there is an increase in the number of medical imaging devices (36.6 and 35.9%) and medical imaging examinations (32.4 and 43.7%), while the growing societal demands in field of health have a role in the increase in the number of medical imaging devices (34.5 and 32.4%). However, a relatively lower percentage of technicians agreed or strongly agreed that the latest technology medical imaging devices should be purchased no matter how much it costs (31.7 and 33.8%) and the yearly increase in the number of imaging examinations indicates provision of an improved healthcare (21.1 and 23.2%). A higher agreement was reported by private hospital (3.9 ± 1.1, p = 0.035) and university hospital (4.1 ± 1.1, p = 0.009) employees vs. state hospital employees (3.4 ± 1.3) on the growing societal demands in field of health to have a role in the increase in the number of medical imaging devices. Apart from this, no significant difference was noted in opinions of technicians on the use of medical imaging devices and related technology with respect to hospital types. Our findings indicate that radiology technicians report a considerable imaging workload volume and a preference for working with higher number of medical imaging devices particularly those with the latest technology, whereas they also emphasize that the yearly increase in the number of imaging examinations does not indicate provision of an improved healthcare, and the cost should always be a criterion when purchasing the latest technology devices.

Cultivar-specific response of rhizosphere bacterial community to uptake of cadmium and mineral elements in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Toxic metal-contaminated farmland from Cadmium (Cd) can enhance the accumulation of Cd and impair the absorption of mineral elements in brown rice. Although several studies have been conducted on Cd exposure on rice, little has been reported on the relationship between Cd and mineral elements in brown rice and the regulatory mechanism of rhizosphere microorganisms during element uptake. Thus, a field study was undertaken to screen japonica rice cultivars with low Cd and high mineral elements levels, analyze the quantitative relationship between Cd and seven mineral elements, and investigate the cultivar-specific response of rice rhizosphere bacterial communities to differences in Cd and mineral uptake in japonica rice. Results showed that Huaidao-9 and Xudao-7 had low Cd absorption and high amounts of mineral nutrient elements (Fe, Zn, Mg, and Ca, LCHM group), whereas Zhongdao-1 and Xinkedao-31 showed opposite accumulation characteristics (HCLM group). Stepwise regression analysis showed that zinc, iron, and potassium are the key minerals that affect Cd accumulation in japonica rice and zinc was the most important factor, accounting for 68.99 %. The accumulation of Cd and mineral elements is potentially associated with rhizosphere soil bacteria. Taxa enriched in the LCHM rhizosphere (phyla Acidobacteriota and MBNT15) indicated the high nutrient characteristics of the soil and reduced activity of Cd in soil. The HCLM rhizosphere was highly colonized by metal-activating bacteria (Actinobacteria), lignin-degrading bacteria (Actinobacteria and Chlorofexi), and bacteria scavenging nutrients and trace elements (Anaerolinea and Ketobacter). Moreover, the differences in the uptake of Cd and mineral elements affected predicted functions of microbial communities, including sulfur oxidation and sulfur derivative formation, human or plant pathogen, and functions related to the iron oxidation and nitrate reduction. The results indicate a potential association of Cd and mineral elements uptake and accumulation with rhizosphere bacteria in rice, thus providing theoretical basis and a new perspective on the maintenance of rice security and high quality simultaneously.

Research Trends in Artificial Intelligence Applications in Human Factors Health Care: Mapping Review

BACKGROUND

Despite advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) to develop prediction and classification models, little research has been devoted to real-world translations with a user-centered design approach. AI development studies in the health care context have often ignored two critical factors of ecological validity and human cognition, creating challenges at the interface with clinicians and the clinical environment.

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this literature review was to investigate the contributions made by major human factors communities in health care AI applications. This review also discusses emerging research gaps, and provides future research directions to facilitate a safer and user-centered integration of AI into the clinical workflow.

METHODS

We performed an extensive mapping review to capture all relevant articles published within the last 10 years in the major human factors journals and conference proceedings listed in the "Human Factors and Ergonomics" category of the Scopus Master List. In each published volume, we searched for studies reporting qualitative or quantitative findings in the context of AI in health care. Studies are discussed based on the key principles such as evaluating workload, usability, trust in technology, perception, and user-centered design.

RESULTS

Forty-eight articles were included in the final review. Most of the studies emphasized user perception, the usability of AI-based devices or technologies, cognitive workload, and user's trust in AI. The review revealed a nascent but growing body of literature focusing on augmenting health care AI; however, little effort has been made to ensure ecological validity with user-centered design approaches. Moreover, few studies (n=5 against clinical/baseline standards, n=5 against clinicians) compared their AI models against a standard measure.

CONCLUSIONS

Human factors researchers should actively be part of efforts in AI design and implementation, as well as dynamic assessments of AI systems' effects on interaction, workflow, and patient outcomes. An AI system is part of a greater sociotechnical system. Investigators with human factors and ergonomics expertise are essential when defining the dynamic interaction of AI within each element, process, and result of the work system.

Oppositional Gravitational Search Algorithm and Artificial Neural Network-based Classification of Kidney Images

Ultrasound (US) imaging has been broadly utilized as part of kidney diagnosis because of its ability to show structural abnormalities like cysts, stones, and infections as well as information about kidney function. The main aim of this research is to effectively classify normal and abnormal kidney images through US based on the selection of relevant features. In this study, abnormal kidney images were classified through gray-scale conversion, region-of-interest generation, multi-scale wavelet-based Gabor feature extraction, probabilistic principal component analysis-based feature selection and adaptive artificial neural network technique. The anticipated method is executed in the working platform of MATLAB, and the results were analyzed and contrasted. Results show that the proposed approach had 94% accuracy and 100% specificity. In addition, its false-acceptance rate is 0%, whereas that of existing methods is not <27%. This shows the precise prediction level of the proposed approach, compared with that of existing methods.

Regional disparities in medical equipment distribution in the Slovak Republic - a platform for a health policy regulatory mechanism

BACKGROUND

This study aims to examine the localisation of selected parameters in the deployment and use of medical equipment in the Slovak Republic and to verify potential regional disparities. The study evaluates the benefits of an analytical platform for regulatory mechanisms in the healthcare system.

METHODS

The correspondence analysis is applied to the entire data set containing information regarding medical equipment distribution and mortality.

RESULTS

The results highlight regional differences in the use of medical equipment throughout the analysed period from 2008 to 2014. The total amount of medical equipment increased slightly to 9192 devices during the time span. In 2014, there was a significant decrease of 16.44%. Disparities are found in the frequencies and structure of medical equipment. In some regions, medical equipment is not present or is present in low numbers.

CONCLUSIONS

The results regarding regional disparities demonstrate the regional development of the amount of medical equipment. The deployment of medical equipment is not proportional, and not all of the analysed devices are available in each region. The tests also indicate the appropriateness of the amount of medical equipment and create a platform for further investigation. The results of the analysis suggest the unsuitable distribution of medical equipment throughout the Slovak regions, where there are significant regional disparities. These findings can serve as a monitoring platform to evaluate the accessibility and efficiency of medical equipment usage.
