Abstract
The removal of hazardous ions from water is crucial for safeguarding both the environment and human health. Soil minerals, integral components of soil, play a vital role as adsorbents for various contaminants, including heavy metal ions, organic dyes, and detergents. This study investigates the interaction between boron ions and soil minerals (gibbsite, kaolinite, and montmorillonite) in the presence of polyethylenimine (PEI). The minerals underwent characterization based on specific surface area, particle size distribution, zeta potential, and the presence of functional groups. The influence of PEI addition on the stability of the soil mineral suspension was evaluated by turbidimetry. Mineral-boron and mineral-boron-PEI interactions were explored under varying conditions, including pH, initial boron concentration, and mineral quantity, with all adsorption experiments conducted over 24 hours. Using the Langmuir isotherm, the maximum adsorption capacity of the studied minerals was determined for boron both without and in the presence of PEI. For gibbsite, kaolinite and montmorillonite, it was 30.63, 24.55 and 26.62 mg g-1, respectively, while in the presence of PEI, it increased to 33.11, 26.61 and 45.47 mg g-1, respectively. The addition of PEI enhanced boron adsorption from aqueous solutions, increasing the removal efficiency from 65 % to about 80 %.

Abstract
Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have recently been a point of interest for many researchers due to their properties. However, the studies on the influence of bacteriophages on the synthesis of MNPs seem to be lacking. Furthermore, bacteriophage-modified MNPs have not been combined with n-alkyl quaternary ammonium ionic liquid precursors (QAS). In this study, the aim was to assess the influence of two distinctly different bacteriophages (Escherichia phage P1 and Pseudomonas phage Φ6) on MNPs synthesis in the presence or absence of QAS. Synthesized MNPs have been characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Mössbauer spectroscopy in terms of changes in the crystallographic structure; scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for changes in the morphology; and ζ-potential. Moreover, the sorption parameters and the loss of viability of bacteria that interacted with MNPs have been determined. The sorption of bacteria differs significantly among the tested samples. Furthermore, the viability of the bacteria adsorbed on MNPs varies in the presence of QAS, depending on the length of the n-alkyl chain. The study has revealed that MNPs can be bound with bacteriophages. Mössbauer spectroscopy has also revealed the probable influence of bacteriophages on the formation of crystals. However, these phenomena require further studies.

Abstract
Thermal desorption (TD) behavior of high-concentration petroleum-contaminated soil (PCS) is affected by soil composition, especially inorganic minerals. In this study, the TD behavior of petroleum-contaminated quartz (original mineral) and kaoline (clay mineral) were compared with those of pure petroleum (Petro-free); their "saturate, aromatic, resin, and asphaltenes" (SARA) fractions were investigated using thermogravimetry and differential thermogravimetry (TG-DTG). The modelling of the petroleum removal kinetics was also analyzed to provide insights into the mechanism. The results revealed that the limiting factor controlling the desorption of petroleum from quartz (Petro-Qtz) and kaoline (Petro-Kln) is the minerals, which increased the effective TD temperature by 200 °C and decreased TD efficiency by 2%. Compared to Petro-Qtz, Petro-Kln showed a lower desorption efficiency of 5% and the process was accomplished at a higher temperature of 100 °C. The investigation on SARA fractions indicated that polar fractions (i.e., aromatics, resins, and asphaltenes) were strongly captured by the minerals. The increment of the TD temperature of petroleum (resins-160 °C > aromatics-20 °C > saturates-5 °C) increased with the polarity of petroleum components. These results could be validated by thermogravimetry-gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy (TG-GC/MS) through the delayed desorption of naphthalene and acenaphthene. Furthermore, the increment of the TD temperature of SARA fractions on kaoline was higher than those on quartz. This makes sense because the kaoline decreased the diffusion of hydrocarbons due to its porosity features and higher specific surface area (kaoline 5.3300 m2 g-1, quartz 0.1153 m2 g-1). In addition, the analysis of the desorption kinetic models showed that the observed hysteresis was related to the diffusion barrier caused by chemisorption (n<1). In consequence, the Petro-Kln showed a lower desorption efficiency, a slower desorption, and as a result, a higher energy consumption (0.476 kW h) for thermal remediation than Petro-Qtz (0.238 kW h).

Abstract
The accumulation of heavy metal in soils is a serious environmental problem. The aim of this paper was to compare the adsorption mechanism of ionic polyacrylamides (PAMs)—anionic and cationic with different contents of functional groups, on the surface of clay minerals—montmorillonite (type 2:1) and kaolinite (type 1:1), without and with the presence of heavy metal ions (Cr(VI) or Pb(II)). The dependence of solution pH, structure of mineral, type of PAM, ionic form of heavy metal, as well as order of adsorbates addition on the adsorption efficiency and stability of the clay mineral-polymer-heavy metal system was determined. In addition to adsorption and stability studies, electrokinetic and potentiometric titration measurements were performed. It was shown that the mixed PAM+heavy metal adsorption layers modify the surface properties of clay minerals significantly, which in many cases leads to the effective destabilization of the solid suspension and its separation from the liquid phase. Moreover, the most important factor, which influences the adsorbed amount of ionic polyacrylamide, turned out to be the internal structure of layered aluminosilicates and the presence of inter-package spaces capable of adsorbate molecules accumulating. For this reason the obtained adsorption capacity of montmorillonite is about 100 times higher in comparison to kaolinite.

Abstract
[Bmim]FeCl4, or 1‑butyl‑3-methylimidazolium tetrachloroferrate, is a typical ionic liquid (IL). Its recyclable, magnetic, multicomponent, and solvent-free nature makes it a particularly attractive ionic liquid for use in industrial processes. Despite its widespread use, the potential hazards that [Bmim]FeCl4 might pose to the environment, including productive microorganisms, have not been explored. In this study, the dose-response of [Bmim]FeCl4 in anaerobic digestion (AD) was investigated to assess the potential toxification and biochar-dependent detoxification in microbial communities, including enzymatic activity and molecule docking dynamics. Our results showed that methane production (31.52 mLmax/gVS) was sharply inhibited following [Bmim]FeCl4 treatment. Moreover, increasing the dosage of [Bmim]FeCl4 caused more dissolved organic matter (DOM) to be generated. Interestingly, 0.4 g/L of [Bmim]FeCl4 could stimulate the high activity of microbial hydrolase and ATPase. However, a higher concentration of 2.65 g/L prevented these enzymatic processes from continuing. At the cellular level, higher concentration of [Bmim]FeCl4 (>0.4 g/L) increased malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, leading to a higher cell lethal rate and weakening of the secondary structures of protein (especially, the amide I region). At the molecular level, the competitive H-bonding in the active sites caused low activity and consummated more energy. At the community level, structural equation modeling (SEM) revealed that [Bmim]FeCl4 and biochar were the main drivers for microbial community succession. For instance, high [Bmim]FeCl4 (8 g/L) benefited the growth of Clostridium sensu_stricto (from ≤1% to 27%). It is worth mentioning that biochar reversed the inhibition with high α-diversity, which caused a resurgence in the activity of previously inhibited ATPase and hydrolase. H2-trophic methanogens (Methanolinea and Methaofastidisoum) were sensitive to [Bmim]FeCl4 and decreased linearly while acetoclastic methanogens (Methanosaeta) were unchanged. These findings were consistent with the short-term activity tests and further verified by functional analysis.

Abstract
Owing to their unique physicochemical properties, ionic liquids (ILs) have been rapidly applied in diverse areas, such as organic synthesis, electrochemistry, analytical chemistry, functional materials, pharmaceutics, and biomedicine. The increase in the production and application of ILs has resulted in their release into aquatic and terrestrial environments. Because of their low vapor pressure, ILs cause very little pollution in the atmosphere compared to organic solvents. However, ILs are highly persistent in aquatic and terrestrial environments due to their stability, and therefore, potentially threaten the safety of eco-environments and human health. Specifically, the environmental translocation and retention of ILs, or their accumulation in organisms, are all related to their physiochemical properties, such as hydrophobicity. Based on results of ecotoxicity, cytotoxicity, and toxicity in mammalian models, the mechanisms involved in IL-induced toxicity include damage of cell membranes and induction of oxidative stress. Recently, artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques have been used in mining and modeling toxicity data to make meaningful predictions. Major future challenges are also discussed. This review will accelerate our understanding of the safety issues of ILs and serve as a guideline for the design of the next generation of ILs.

Abstract
The demand for lowering interfacial tension (IFT) in different processes has persuaded researchers to use stable and resistant surfactants with low environmental impact. For this purpose, surface-active ionic liquids (SAILs) have attracted much attention owing to their good amphiphilic nature and prominent properties like recyclability and high performance under harsh conditions. This review initially explains how the IFT and critical micelle concentration of different systems vary in the presence of different SAILs with a variety of alkyl chain lengths, head groups, and counter anions. Towards this aim, some physicochemical properties of SAILs as well as the corresponding theoretical aspects of adsorption are considered. Then, recent advances in utilizing SAILs for reducing IFT of different chemical systems are surveyed. Relevantly, the role of important operating parameters of temperature, pH, presence of electrolytes, and the chemical nature of involved phases are adequately discussed. Further, an overview of different SAILs applications in stabilization, separation, and in petroleum industries is scrutinized. To allow better judgment, precise comparisons between different types of SAILs and conventional surfactants are provided. Finally, challenges and possible directions of future research on SAILs are highlighted.

Abstract
The tailorable and often unique properties of ionic liquids (ILs) drive their implementation into a broad variety of seminal technologies. The modular design of ILs allows in this context a proactive selection of structures that favor environmental sustainability─ideally without compromising their technological performance. To achieve this objective, the whole life cycle must be taken into account and various aspects considered simultaneously. In this review, we discuss how the structural design of ILs affects their environmental impacts throughout all stages of their life cycles and scrutinize the available data in order to point out knowledge gaps that need further research activities. The design of more sustainable ILs starts with the selection of the most beneficial precursors and synthesis routes, takes their technical properties and application specific performance into due account, and considers its environmental fate particularly in terms of their (eco)toxicity, biotic and abiotic degradability, mobility, and bioaccumulation potential. Special emphasis is placed on reported structure-activity relationships and suggested mechanisms on a molecular level that might rationalize the empirically found design criteria.

Abstract
Imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) have unique and tunable features with high potential in industrial use. However, the utilization of the ILs in industrial processes has recently arisen the question of their disposal and the effect on the environment. Therefore, in the present study, we investigated the effect of two commercial imidazolium-based ILs, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Bmim][Cl]) and 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Dmim][Cl]) on the growth and chemical composition of widely grown vegetables - tomato and cucumber. Different concentrations (10, 100 or 1000 mg L-1) of [Bmim][Cl] and [Dmim][Cl] were applied to the soil on which tomato was cultivated. After the harvest of tomato fruits, the same soil was used to grow and analyze the growth and chemical composition of cucumber. ILs significantly reduced shoot biomass and yield of tomato and significantly changed concentrations of N, K, Ca, Fe and Mn in the leaves, whereas concentrations of P, Cu and Zn were at the level of respected controls. The number of fruits of cucumber, grown on the soil previously treated with ILs, was significantly reduced along with yield, and mineral composition of leaves was significantly altered, with the exception to Cu. [Dmim][Cl] in general affected both tomato and cucumber more than [Bmim][Cl]. The application of IL with a longer alkyl substituent ([Dmim][Cl]) increased the temperature inside the tomato canopy and accelerated the senescence of plants.

Abstract
Heavy metals, such as Pb(II), Cd(II), Hg(II), do not degrade like organic compounds and remain in soil for a long time. The presence of organic, mineral or polymeric substances (such as polyacrylamides) may contribute to the accumulation and immobilization of toxic metals in poorly absorbable form for living organisms. The main aim of the study was to compare the effectiveness of lead(II) ions immobilization on the layered aluminosilicate surfaces in the anionic polyacrylamide presence. The effectiveness of Pb(II) adsorption was tested depending on metal cation concentration, content of dissociable groups in added flocculant as well as internal structure of clay mineral. The desorption tests of heavy metal ions were performed by the use of water and EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid). By means of measurements of suspension stability and aggregate size formed in the studied systems, the flocculating ability of anionic polyacrylamide was checked. The electrokinetic parameters of mineral particles, i.e. surface charge density and electrokinetic potential, without and with individual adsorbates were also determined. It has been shown that the Pb cations adsorbed amount and the effectiveness of their immobilization strongly depends on the polyacrylamide presence in the system and the internal structure of aluminosilicate.

Abstract
Effects of alkyl chain length of ionic liquid (IL), soil components and solution inorganic cations on a selected IL (1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium chloride, [OMIM]Cl) interaction with Chinese soils were investigated using batch sorption experiments. The results indicated that sorption energy was mainly controlled by chain length of [OMIM]Cl and contents of soil organic matter (SOM). [OMIM]Cl sorption on soils was mainly controlled by cation exchange process. Contributions of SOM and clay minerals (CMs) to [OMIM]Cl sorption were 7.3%-53.8% and 46.2%-92.7%, respectively. SOM possessed higher energy cation-exchange binding sites than CMs. To predict the sorption of [OMIM]Cl on soils, a model for the relationship between sorption coefficient (Kd) and cation exchange capacity (CEC) from soil components (SOM and CMs, i.e., CECSOM and CECCMs) as well as solution concentration (Ce) was established: LogKd = Log(1.67*CECSOM + 3.22*CECCMs) - 0.58LogCe. This model could provide a good prediction for sorption coefficients and the prediction errors were within 0.48 log unit. Competitive effects caused by inorganic cations followed the order of Ca2+ = Mg2+ > K+ > Na+. Concentrations and valence of coexisting ions both affect their competitive capability on [OMIM]Cl sorption. The finding of this study provided valuable information for evaluating the fate of [OMIM]Cl in soils.

Abstract
Montmorillonite clay (MC) yields after modification of the interlamellar spacing and the chemical character of its surface by treatment with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) a solid product (MCCTA). This has been used as an adsorbent for the removal of p-nitrophenol (PNP) from aqueous solutions. The MCCTA samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), thermogravimetric analysis (TG/DTA), FT-IR spectroscopy, zeta potential measurements, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and specific surface area. Investigations were also carried out to assess how the adsorption of PNP was affected by factors such as contact time, initial PNP concentration, adsorbent dosage and temperature. Of the two models tried the Freundlich isotherm gave a better account of the equilibrium data than did the Langmuir one. The kinetics could be successfully replicated by a pseudo-second order model with an activation energy of 55.0 kJ mol-1, while the thermodynamic parameters indicated an exothermic (ΔadsHo = -15.8 kJ mol-1), non-spontaneous (ΔadsGo = + 3.9-5.9 kJ mol-1) adsorption process. The experimental results showed MCCTA, unlike natural MC, to have a significant adsorption capacity for PNP removal from aqueous media.

Abstract
Abstract
Green synthesis of room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs), are presented as friendly and challenging solvents for the effective dissolution of oil palm-lignocellulosic biomass. A series of Bronsted acidic-ionic liquids were prepared by the direct neutralization of diethyl dimethyl ammonium hydroxide with several (economical and environmental friendly) Bronsted acids as RTILs. The structural and physicochemical characterization was performed by applying various techniques as Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), zeta-nanosizer and dynamic light scattering (DLS) respectively, to state the effect of anion on the extended cellulose dissolution capabilities of the synthesized RTILs under mild conditions. As a polysaccharide solvent, diethyl dimethyl ammonium phosphate (A1P) showed the extreme capability to extract 65 % of cellulose from biomass without any pretreatment for 30 min. The present study could be a significant step toward the synthesis of efficient RTILs and generating upgraded cellulose for Hi-tech engineered composites and energy concerns.

Abstract
Adsorption mechanisms of 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium chloride ([OMIM]Cl) on rice straw-derived biochars produced at 400, 500, and 700 °C (referred as RB400, RB500, and RB700, respectively) were evaluated. Adsorption affinity followed the order of RB700 > RB400 > RB500. Electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bond controlled adsorption of [OMIM]Cl on RB400, while π-π EDA interaction between [OMIM]Cl and the aromatic rings of biochar dominated adsorption of RB500 and RB700. With increasing solution pH, -COOH and -OH on biochar became deprotonated. Consequently, [OMIM]Cl binding to these sites changed from hydrogen bond to electrostatic attraction. Adsorption capacity of [OMIM]Cl increased with increasing pH during the adsorption process. Solid concentration induced by -OH of [OMIM]Cl was higher than that of -COOH. Thermodynamics study indicated that adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. ∆H 0 values indicated that [OMIM]Cl adsorption on biochars was a physisorption.

Abstract
The production and use of ionic liquids (ILs) increase the potential risk after their emission into the environment. After entering the environment, ILs will readily interact with dissolved organic matter (DOM), and their environmental behavior will be impacted by DOM, which is abundant in the environment and has various functional groups. However, to date, the interaction between DOM and ILs, especially long-chain ILs, remains unclear. In this work, the interaction between long-chain ILs and humic acid (HA), a representative DOM, was investigated using synchronous fluorescence, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and zeta potential techniques, which were integrated with two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS), hetero-2DCOS, and perturbation-correlation moving-window analyses. The results show that cation exchange by the carboxylic groups in humic-like fractions was primarily responsible for interaction at low IL concentrations. As a result, the decrease in electrostatic repulsion and the increase in hydrophobicity facilitated the loose aggregation of HA. With an increase in IL concentration, the aromatic and carbonyl groups were involved in the interaction via the π-π interaction and dipole-dipole interaction, respectively, which resulted in the disruption of the intramolecular hydrogen bond and promoted the compaction of HA under the hydrophobic effect. The intensity transition sequence of various groups in HA was elucidated more specifically by 2DCOS. With these results, a comprehensive view of the structural changes of DOM in its IL-binding process was obtained, and the fate and environmental impact of ILs could be better understood. Furthermore, the superior potential of such an integrated approach in investigating the complex interactions in the environment was also demonstrated.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) comprise mostly of organic salts with negligible vapor pressure and low flammability that are proposed as replacements for volatile solvents. ILs have been promoted as "green" solvents and widely investigated for their various applications. Although the utility of these chemicals is unquestionable, their toxic effects have attracted great attention. In order to manage their potential hazards and design environmentally benign ILs, understanding their environmental behavior, fate and effects is important. In this review, environmentally relevant issues of ILs, including their environmental application, environmental behavior and toxicity are addressed. In addition, also presented are the influence of ILs on the environmental fate and toxicity of other coexisting contaminants, important routes for designing nontoxic ILs and the techniques that might be adopted for the removal of ILs.

Abstract
New amphiphilic pyridine derivatives containing dodecyloxycarbonyl substituents at positions 3 and 5 and cationic moieties at positions 2 and 6 have been designed and synthesised. Compounds of this type can be considered as synthetic lipids. The corresponding 1,4-dihydropyridine (1,4-DHP) derivatives have earlier been proposed as a promising tool for plasmid DNA (pDNA) delivery in vitro. In this work studies of the self-assembling properties of amphiphilic pyridine derivatives leading to the formation of liposomes, determination of particle size, zeta-potential and critical micelle concentration (CMC) with dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements are described. Furthermore, thermal analysis of pyridine derivatives was performed using thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) as well as the ability to deliver the pEGFP-C1 plasmid DNA (that encodes GFP reporter) into the Baby hamster kidney-derived (BHK-21) cell line was used for evaluation of gene delivery properties. We have revealed that the new pyridine derivatives possessed self-assembling properties which were proved by formation of nanoparticles with the average size from 115 to 743nm, the zeta-potentials in the range of 48-79mV and CMC values in the range of 2-67μM. DTA data showed that all processes were endothermic for all compounds. Additionally, we established that among the tested pyridines the representatives with N-methylpyrrolidinium or pyridinium moieties as cationic head-group at the positions 2 and 6 possessed higher pEGFP-C1 transfection activity into the BHK-21 cell line. Nevertheless, the obtained results indicated that correlation of the physicochemical, structural properties and gene delivery activities of the tested compounds were not completely elucidated yet. On the other hand, the synthesised pyridines as possible metabolites of promising delivery systems on the 1,4-DHP core possessed lower pDNA transfection activity than the corresponding 1,4-DHP amphiphiles.

Abstract
Sorption on solids and biodegradation are main phenomena that can mitigate the pollution of soil and water by ionic liquids (ILs). ILs sorbed on soil particles become immobilized (temporarily or permanently) which prevents them from spreading into deeper layers of soil or groundwater but which also makes them less bioavailable. In this study we attempt to examine if amendment of soil with waste sludge has a potential to mitigate the transport and enhance biodegradation of ILs using 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium chloride ([OMIM][Cl]) as an example. We present the results of adsorption test (batch and column) and ultimate biodegradation of [OMIM][Cl] using microbial communities derived from soil. Finally, we combine all of these processes together to examine the fate of [OMIM][Cl] in a continuous column flow-through system in soil amended with waste sewage sludge. Addition of sludge serves two purposes: firstly increasing soil organic matter (formerly proved to facilitate retardation), and secondly augmenting soil with versatile microbial communities previously shown to successfully degrade ILs.

Abstract
In this paper, the sorption characteristics and mechanisms of phenanthrene and pyrene onto peat (PT) and surfactant-modified peat (MPT) were investigated. Sorption results fit closely to the Partition model and Freundlich model, the coefficient of determination (R²) were higher than 0.98 and 0.99, respectively. The contributions of partition and adsorption to the total sorption of phenanthrene and pyrene by PT and MPT were analyzed quantitatively. Results indicate that the sorption process is a combination of partition and adsorption, and partition plays a major role in the sorption process. The contribution of partition increased with the increasing of initial concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The sorption ability of phenanthrene and pyrene by PT and MPT followed the order of pyrene > phenanthrene. MPT has demonstrated potential as a promising new class of materials for environmental remediation of organic pollutants.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs), due to their low vapor pressure, have been explored as green solvents for organic synthesis. In this study, the uptake of ILs on a high charge Ca-montmorillonite (MMT) and the use of the IL-modified MMT for the removal of anionic contaminants from water were systematically studied. Uptake of ILs by MMT was exclusively resulted from a cation exchange mechanism when the initial IL concentrations were less than the critical micelle concentration (CMC) and the sorbed ILs formed a monolayer conformation on the surface of MMT. When the initial IL concentrations were greater than the CMC, both cation exchange and hydrophobic interactions were responsible for the IL uptake. The IL molecules formed admicelles and the surface charge was reversed to positive balanced by counterion Cl(-) when the IL loading was higher than the cation exchange capacity of the mineral. The modified MMT could remove chromate from water instantaneously, with an adsorption capacity of 190 mmol/kg and a 99.5% removal efficiency at an initial chromate concentration of 2.6 mmol/L. These features could further expand the application of ILs and enable IL-modified MMT to be used as inexpensive sorbents for the removal of chromate and other oxyanions from water.

Abstract
Increased use and production of ionic liquids (ILs) may result in emissions into the environment. Particularly vulnerable are industrial areas and landfills where ILs are utilized and ultimately disposed of. This study investigates how IL contamination can affect soil properties and the sorption of pre-existing contaminants. The commonly used IL 1-methyl-3-octyl imidazolium chloride ([OMIM][Cl]) was added at various quantities to a landfill soil contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Subsequently, the release of PAHs and dissolved organic matter (DOM) from this soil was thoroughly investigated. Two fractions of PAH release into the porewater were measured, the freely dissolved fraction (measured using a passive sampler) and the total PAH concentration (which includes the freely dissolved molecules as well as those associated with colloids, micelles and DOM). As expected the highest levels of total PAH porewater concentration occurred when the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the IL was exceeded. However, as we report here for the first time, enhanced amounts of freely dissolved PAHs were released by sub-CMC concentrations of IL. Additionally, enhanced levels of DOM, due to dissolution of soil organic matter by IL, were also observed upon addition of sub-CMC IL concentrations. Based on this, enhanced release of pre-existing contaminants and DOM is suggested as a potential risk from IL emissions at trace concentrations well below the CMC. Potential mechanisms of this sub-CMC release are discussed.

Abstract
With the constant development of new ionic liquids, the understanding of the chemical fate of these compounds also needs to be updated. To this effect, the interaction of a number of novel ionic liquids with soils was determined. Therefore, three novel headgroups (ammonium, phosphonium, or pyrrolidinium) with single or quaternary substitution were tested on a variety of soils with high-to-low organic matter content and high-to-low cation exchange capacity, thereby trying to capture the full range of possible soil interactions. It was found that the ionic liquids with single butyl alkyl chain interacted more strongly with the soils (especially with a higher cation exchange capacity), at lower concentrations, than the quad-substituted ionic liquids. However, the quad-substituted ionic liquids interacted more strongly at higher concentrations, due to the double-layer formation, and induced stronger dipole interaction with previously sorbed molecules.
