Vertically-resolved profiles of mass concentrations and particle backscatter coefficients of Asian dust plumes derived from lidar observations of silicon dioxide

Vertical profiles of particle light extinction coefficient in the lower troposphere in Shanghai in winter based on tethered airship measurements

A cavity attenuated phase shift single scattering albedo monitor was set up on a tethered airship platform to study the vertical profiles of particle light extinction coefficient (b_ext) in the lower troposphere (<1000 m) in Shanghai during 12-29 December 2015. Clear transition heights (THs) for vertical profiles of b_ext during the polluted days (PM_2.5 > 75 μg m^-3) were observed below 1000 m. The vertical differences of b_ext were highly dynamic as the vertical variation in b_ext was significant by as much as 605 Mm^-1. The TH was observed mostly at about 100-200 m, and 450-650 m during night and daytime, respectively, and was in a wide range of ∼50-900 m during 15:00-22:00 due to the low boundary layer and/or the transport of pollutants. In particular, the TH was consistently below 500 m throughout the day during highly polluted haze episodes, highlighting the important role of a stagnant atmosphere situation for high concentrations of PM_2.5. The vertical distribution of b_ext did not have a constant rule with respect to relative humidity and wind. Sometimes, peak values of b_ext at ∼350 m and 500 m during daytime were caused by enhanced regional transport. During stagnant and highly polluted situations or well-mixed clean days, b_ext was usually uniformly distributed below and above the TH, respectively, although b_ext was much smaller above the TH. For other situations, local emissions, pollutant transport, and the physical and chemical characteristics of aerosols resulted in highly dynamic vertical profiles of b_ext.

Association between transported Asian dust and outdoor fungal concentration during winter in a rural area of western Japan

Background

Recently, Asian dust (AD) has become a serious health problem and several studies have clearly proven that AD can aggravate asthma. However, it remains unclear as to which components of AD have a strong effect on the asthma exacerbation caused by AD exposure. Outdoor fungi can increase emergency department visits and hospitalization for asthma exacerbation and can aggravate asthma symptoms. Therefore, this study was aimed at investigating the relationship between AD and outdoor fungi and determining the potential of fungi to cause airborne particulate matter (PM)-related inflammatory responses.

Methods

Airborne PM was collected each day from January 26, 2015 to February 27, 2015. Daily levels of outdoor fungi-associated PM were calculated using a culture-based method. Production of cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α was assessed in THP1 cells stimulated by the collected airborne PM each day.

Results

Daily levels of AD particles were assessed using Light Detection and Ranging and did not correlate with outdoor fungi (r = −0.17, P = 0.94). There was also no association between outdoor fungi and the daily production of IL-6 (r = 0.16, P = 0.37), IL-8 (r = 0.19, P = 0.30), or TNF-α induced by collected PM (r = 0.07, P = 0.70). However, the daily levels of AD particles were significantly associated with IL-6 (r = 0.91, P < 0.0001), IL-8 (r = 0.64, P = 0.0004), and TNF-α (r = 0.72, P < 0.0001) production.

Conclusion

AD did not increase the acute levels of outdoor fungi and outdoor fungi did not affect the cytokine production induced by airborne PM. These results suggest that outdoor fungi do not have any detectable effect on the asthma exacerbation caused by AD exposure.

Comparative In Vitro Biological Toxicity of Four Kinds of Air Pollution Particles

Accumulating epidemiological evidence indicates that exposure to fine air pollution particles (APPs) is associated with a variety of adverse health effects. However, the exact physiochemical properties and biological toxicities of fine APPs are still not well characterized. We collected four types of fine particle (FP) (diesel exhaust particles [DEPs], natural organic combustion [NOC] ash, synthetic organic combustion [SOC] ash, and yellow sand dust [YSD]) and investigated their physicochemical properties and in vitro biological toxicity. DEPs were almost entirely composed of ultrafine particles (UFPs), while the NOC, SOC, and YSD particles were a mixture of UFPs and FPs. The main elements in the DEPs, NOC ash, SOC ash, and YSD were black carbon, silicon, black carbon, and silicon, respectively. DEPs exhibited dose-dependent mutagenicity even at a low dose in Salmonella typhimurium TA 98 and 100 strains in an Ames test for genotoxicity. However, NOC, SOC, and YSD particles did not show any mutagenicity at high doses. The neutral red uptake assay to test cell viability revealed that DEPs showed dose-dependent potent cytotoxicity even at a low concentration. The toxicity of DEPs was relatively higher than that of NOC, SOC, and YSD particles. Therefore, these results indicate that among the four FPs, DEPs showed the highest in vitro biological toxicity. Additional comprehensive research studies such as chemical analysis and in vivo acute and chronic inhalation toxicity tests are necessary to determine and clarify the effects of this air contaminant on human health.
