Historical deposition of persistent organic pollutants in Lake Victoria and two alpine equatorial lakes from East Africa: Insights into atmospheric deposition from sedimentation profiles

Alps at risk: High-mountain lakes as reservoirs of persistent and emerging contaminants

Despite their remote locations, high-mountain lakes located in the Alps are vulnerable to chemical pollution. This discussion explores the important aspects of these lakes as repositories of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs), elucidating their sources and implications for both the environment and human health. In terms of the presence of POPs in high-altitude lakes of the Alps, 14 studies have been identified examining the occurrence of polychlorinated biphenyls, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane an its metabolites, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The bulk of research on POPs in high-mountain lakes is concentrated in the Italian Alps (63%), followed by Switzerland (22%), Austria (12%), and France (3%), respectively. Sediment is predominantly investigated (65%), followed by fish (33%) and water (2%). Similarly, in relation to the presence of CECs in high-mountain lakes of the Alps, six studies have been identified investigating the occurrence of musks, perfluorinated compounds, and microplastics. Investigations into CECs predominantly occur in Switzerland (42%), France (33%), and Italy (25%), with fish samples (muscle and liver) being the primary focus (46%), followed by sediment (17%) and water (17%). Other compartments like zooplankton, frog/tadpoles, and snow remain less explored. The discussion also shed light on various pathways through which pollutants reach these remote landscapes, including atmospheric transport, glacial meltwater, and human activities. Protecting these pristine peaks demands concerted efforts encompassing ongoing research, vigilant monitoring, and dedicated conservation initiatives.

Environmental levels and human body burdens of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances in Africa: A critical review

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are known organic pollutants with adverse health effects on humans and the ecosystem. This paper synthesises literature about the status of the pollutants and their precursors, identifies knowledge gaps and discusses future perspectives on the study of PFASs in Africa. Limited data on PFASs prevalence in Africa is available because there is limited capacity to monitor PFASs in African laboratories. The levels of PFASs in Africa are higher in samples from urban and industrialized areas compared to rural areas. Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are the dominant PFASs in human samples from Africa. Levels of PFOS and PFOA in these samples are lower than or comparable to those from industrialized countries. PFOA and PFOS levels in drinking water in Africa are, in some cases, higher than the EPA drinking water guidelines suggesting potential risk to humans. The levels of PFASs in birds' eggs from South Africa are higher, while those in other environmental media from Africa are lower or comparable to those from industrialized countries. Diet influences the pollutant levels in fish, while size and sex affect their accumulation in crocodiles. No bioaccumulation of PFASs in aquatic systems in Africa could be confirmed due to small sample sizes. Reported sources of PFASs in Africa include municipal landfills, inefficient wastewater treatment plants, consumer products containing PFASs, industrial wastewater and urban runoff. Relevant stakeholders need to take serious action to identify and deal with the salient sources of PFASs on the African continent.

Human and environmental exposure to PCDD/Fs and dioxin-like PCBs in Africa: A review

This paper reviews literature for the last two decades with emphasis on levels, toxic equivalencies and sources of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) in Africa. Further, we comprehensively analysed data, interpret differences and identify existing gaps with those from other continents. We observed that high levels of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs were reported in environmental and biological samples near densely populated urban and industrialised areas compared to those in rural settings. In general, the concentrations of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs in the blood samples from Africa were in the same range as those from Asia but lower than those from Europe. The concentrations of dioxins and dioxin-like compounds in the atmosphere in Africa were comparable to and/or higher than those in developed countries. The reported sources of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs in Africa were industrial emissions, obsolete pesticide stockpiles, household heating, recycling of electronic waste, and incineration and combustion of domestic waste. Regional and intercontinental transport of dioxins could not be confirmed because of the lack of sufficient literature on them. Further data about the levels and sources of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs in Africa need to be generated to complete the chemical inventories for the continent and to facilitate the implementation of the Stockholm Convention on persistent organic pollutants. The reviewed literature shows that most analyses have been carried out in laboratories outside Africa because of the limited institutional capacity in Africa. More support needs to be given to laboratories in Africa to develop the capacity to accurately quantify dioxins on routine basis.

Physical dynamics of Lake Victoria over the past 34 years (1984-2018): Is the lake dying?

Understanding changes in the physical dynamics of lakes (e.g., areas and shorelines) is important to inform policies, planning and management during climate extremes (e.g., floods and droughts). For Lake Victoria, the world's second largest freshwater lake, its physical dynamics and associated changes are not well understood as evidenced, e.g., from the citations of its area 66,400 - 69,485 km², length 300 - 412 km, width 240 - 355 km, and shorelines 3300 - 4828 km. Its sheer size and lack of research resources commitment by regional governments hamper observations. This contribution employs a suite of remotely sensed products for the past 34 years (1984-2018); Landsat, Sentinel-2, MODIS, Google Earth Pro, CHIRPS, Multivariate El' Niño-Southern Oscillation Index and altimetry data together with the physical parameters from 37 publications (1969-2018) to (i) study the lake's dynamics and establish its current (2018) state, (ii) identify and analyse hotspots where significantly dynamic changes occur, and (iii), study the contributions of climate change and anthropogenic activities on these dynamics. Utilizing manual digitisation, MNDWI, NDVI and PCA methods, the study shows the lake's mean surface area to be 69,295 km² (i.e., 812 km² or 1.2% more than that of the 37 publications) and its 2018 value to be 69,216 km² (i.e., ∼733 km² (1.1%) more than that of the 37 publications). As to whether the lake is dying, it shrunk by 203 km² (0.3%) compared to its 1984 value, a decrease noted mainly in four hotspot Gulfs (Birinzi 40%, Winam 20%, Emin Pasha 38% and Mwanza 55%). Correspondingly, the expansion of Nalubaale Dam (2002-2006) decreased the areas by 31%, 10%, 21% and 44%, respectively. Seasonal analysis shows an increase of 9 km² in the lake's area during the heavy rainy season (March-May) while the ENSO enlarged the area by 0.23% (2007) and 0.45% (2010). It is evident, therefore, that both climate variability/change and anthropogenic activities are exerting a toll on the tropical's largest freshwater body thereby necessitating careful exploitation and management plans.

Assessing the Extent of Historical, Current, and Future Land Use Systems in Uganda

Sustainable land use systems planning and management requires a wider understanding of the spatial extent and detailed human-ecosystem interactions astride any landscape. This study assessed the extent of historical, current, and future land use systems in Uganda. The specific objectives were to (i) characterize and assess the extent of historical and current land use systems, and (ii) project future lan use systems. The land use systems were defined and classified using spatially explicit land use/cover layers for the years 1990 and 2015, while the future prediction (for the year 2040) was determined using land use systems datasets for both years through a Markov chain model. This study reveals a total of 29 classes of land use systems that can be broadly categorized as follows: three of the land use systems are agricultural, five are under bushland, four under forest, five under grasslands, two under impediments, three under wetlands, five under woodland, one under open water and urban settlement respectively. The highest gains in the land amongst the land use systems were experienced in subsistence agricultural land and grasslands protected, while the highest losses were seen in grasslands unprotected and woodland/forest with low livestock densities. By 2040, subsistence agricultural land is likely to increase by about 1% while tropical high forest with livestock activities is expected to decrease by 0.2%, and woodland/forest unprotected by 0.07%. High demand for agricultural and settlement land are mainly responsible for land use systems patchiness. This study envisages more land degradation and disasters such as landslides, floods, droughts, and so forth to occur in the country, causing more deaths and loss of property, if the rate at which land use systems are expanding is not closely monitored and regulated in the near future.

Prevalence and sources of polychlorinated biphenyls in the atmospheric environment of Lake Victoria, East Africa

The large surface area of Lake Victoria (about 68,800 km²) makes it vulnerable to high atmospheric deposition of chemical pollutants. We present measurements of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from the lake's atmospheric environment. High volume air (24 h) samples were collected within the northern Lake Victoria watershed in Uganda over two periods; 1999-2004 [at Kakira (KAK) and Entebbe (EBB)] and 2008-2010 (at EBB only). Precipitation samples were also collected monthly during the 2008-2010 period at EBB. Analysis for PCBs was done using GC-μECD in a dual column approach. The ranges of ΣPCB concentrations in the KAK air samples were 154-462 pg m^-3 (KAK 1999-2000), 26.7-226 pg m^-3 (KAK 2003-2004), 27.0-186 pg m^-3 (EBB 2003), 46.8-174 pg m^-3 (EBB 2004), 19.2-128 pg m^-3 (EBB 2008), 45.8-237 pg m^-3 (EBB 2009) and 65.6-244 pg m^-3 (EBB 2010). The di-, tri-, tetra- and penta-PCBs were predominant in air sample sets while the tetra- and penta-PCBs were predominant in precipitation samples. The mean flux of ΣPCBs in the precipitation samples was 26.9 ng m^-2 (range of 14.8-41.5 and median of 27.5). Concentrations at EBB were lower than those reported elsewhere for urban sites in the East and Central African region. Multivariate analysis and analysis of air mass movements suggested influence of combustion sources on the PCB profiles from the region, especially, from the major East African urbanized regions.

Organochlorine pesticides in the sedimentary core of the southern Tibetan Plateau: The missing pieces induced by lateral remobilization

The sedimentary core in remote alpine lakes has been recognized as an ideal proxy to reconstruct the emission and air deposition histories of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Nevertheless, POPs formerly stored in a catchment might also contribute to the variation in the lake sediment by lateral remobilization. In this study, to reveal the relative importance of lateral remobilization, we measured the vertical profiles and isomeric ratios of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs), hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) and endosulfan in a dated sedimentary core collected from Lake Yamzho Yumco in the southern Tibetan Plateau. In addition to the flux peaks in the 1970s corresponding to the heavy atmospheric deposition of DDTs and HCHs, these pollutants' fluxes displayed rebounds in the flood periods, with characteristic low ratios of DDT/DDE (α-/β-HCH). This might indicate a massive remobilization of "weathered" pesticides from catchment soil to the lake because of strong hydro-dynamics. Moreover, the relative contribution of lateral remobilization to the lake sediment in the past decades was recognized through the correlation between DDT/DDE (α-/β-HCH) ratios and ∑DDT (∑HCH) fluxes. The results showed that the lateral remobilization contributed to 20-42% of the total fluxes. This study discriminated the air deposition from the contribution of lateral remobilization, which improves current understanding of the vertical POPs profiles in the sedimentary core.

Insecticidal activity of Stemona collinsiae root extract against Parasarcophaga ruficornis (Diptera: Sarcophagidae)

In Thai indigenous knowledge, Stemona plant has traditionally been used as insecticide on plantations. Recently, S. collinsiae extract was showed to be an anti-feedant and growth inhibitor and to exert strong insecticidal activity. Here, the insecticidal activity of S. collinsiae root extract against Parasarcophaga ruficornis is studied. The larvicidal and pupicidal activities of the ethanolic root extract of S. collinsiae were tested using contact toxicity tests, and adulticidal activity was tested using the topical contact toxicity and sugar bait methods The ethanolic extract at concentration ranging of 0.3-320mg/larva for the direct contact toxicity test and from 0.3 to 3.2mg/cm²/larva for the secondary contact toxicity test showed 3.0-51.0 and 1.0-94.0% corrected mortality, respectively. Against third-instar larvae, the LD₅₀ concentrations of the ethanolic extract were 31.7±0.0mg/larva and 1.4±0.0mg/cm²/larva for direct and secondary contact toxicity tests, respectively. Pupae were not eliminated at all concentrations of the ethanolic extract. Against adult flies, which were killed via oral administration, the LD₅₀ concentration of the ethanolic extract was 0.145±0.070g extract/g glucose. Thus, the ethanolic extract of S. collinsiae was capable of eliminating P. ruficornis in larval and adult stages via topical and ingestion administration, respectively.
