Abstract
As an important component of air pollution, the efficient removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is one of the most important challenges in the world. VOCs are harmful to the environment and human health. This review systematically introduced the main VOC control technologies and research hotspots in recent years, and expanded the description of electrocatalytic oxidation technology and bimetallic catalytic removal technology. Based on a three-dimensional electrode reactor, the theoretical design of a VOC removal control technology using bimetallic three-dimensional particle electrode electrocatalytic oxidation was proposed for the first time. The future research focus of this method was analyzed, and the importance of in-depth exploration of the catalytic performance of particle electrodes and the system reaction mechanism was emphasized. This review provides a new idea for using clean and efficient methods to remove VOCs.

Comparison Study on Sonodirect and Sonoalternate Current Electrocoagulation Process for Domestic Wastewater Treatment. Int J Anal Chem 2022; 2022:3477995. [PMID: 35340980 PMCID: PMC8942696 DOI: 10.1155/2022/3477995] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/25/2021] [Revised: 01/20/2022] [Accepted: 02/22/2022] [Indexed: 11/17/2022] Open
Abstract
Nowadays, there is a problem related to wastewater handling which is released from different activities. The electrocoagulation method has been a dominant treatment method for wastewater treatment. There are different forms of electrocoagulation methods for wastewater treatment. Nevertheless, there was no comparison made for the removal efficiency of the sonoalternate current (SAC), alternate current (AC), sonodirect current (SDC), and direct current (DC) electrocoagulation process. The efficiency of electrocoagulation methods was compared for their removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) from Jimma University domestic wastewater. Batch Reactor DC/AC electrocoagulation cell was used to determine the removal efficiency. During the comparison, the response surface methodology (RSM) was used to analyze and optimize the data taken from the laboratory. Besides, ANOVA was used to analyze the interaction effects of different parameters. The removal of COD from domestic wastewater was achieved with DCE, ACE, SDCE, and SACE which were 82.6%, 86.58%, 88.6%, and 92.5%, respectively, under optimal experimental conditions. From the finding, SACE was more successful at removing % COD than the DCE, ACE, and SDCE methods. For DCE and SDCE, the formation of an impermeable oxide layer at the cathode and the occurrence of corrosion at the anode due to oxidation made the COD removal process less efficient compared with SACE processes. From the experimental results it can be concluded that the SACE has the lowest power consumption and higher process efficiency than the other EC methods and can be a promising solution for removing pollutants from domestic wastewater.

Sun Z, Xi J, Yeung M, Lu L. Two quorum sensing enhancement methods optimized the biofilm of biofilters treating gaseous chlorobenzene. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2022; 807:150589. [PMID: 34597570 DOI: 10.1016/j.scitotenv.2021.150589] [Citation(s) in RCA: 8] [Impact Index Per Article: 4.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/12/2021] [Revised: 09/16/2021] [Accepted: 09/22/2021] [Indexed: 06/13/2023]
Abstract
In this study, effects of two quorum sensing (QS) enhancement methods on the performance and biofilm of biofilters treating chlorobenzene were investigated. Three biofilters were set up with BF1 as a control, BF2 added exogenous N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) and BF3 inoculated AHLs-producing bacterium identified as Acinetobacter. The average chlorobenzene elimination capacities were 73 and 77 g/m3/h for BF2 and BF3 respectively, which were significantly higher than 50 g/m3/h for BF1. The wet biomass of BF2 and BF3 with QS enhancement eventually increased to 60 and 39 kg/m3 respectively, and it was 29 kg/m3 for BF1. Analysis on biofilms in three biofilters showed that distribution uniformity, extracellular polymeric substances production, adhesive strengths, viability, and metabolic capacity of biofilms were all prompted by the two QS enhancement methods. Comparisons between the two QS enhancement methods showed that adding exogenous AHLs had more significant enhancing effect on biofilm due to its higher AHLs level in start-up period, while AHLs-producing bacteria had an advantage in enhancing bacterial community diversity. These results demonstrate that QS enhancement methods have the potential to optimize the biofilm and thus improve the performance of biofilters treating recalcitrant VOCs.

Abstract
Cobalt (Co) co-doped TiO2 photo-catalysis were synthesized, characterized and tested toward solar photocatalytic oxidation of toluene (TOL). A multi-technique approach was used to characterize and relate the photo-catalytic property to photo-oxidation performance. Adding Co to TiO2 significantly changed crystal size and surface morphology (surface area, pore-volume, and pore size), reduced the bandgap energy of TiO2 and improved the solar photo-oxidation of TOL. Up to 96.5% of TOL conversion (%TNconv) was achieved by using Co-TiO2 compared with 28.5% with naked TiO2. The maximum %TNconv was achieved at high hydraulic retention time (HRT) ≥ 100 s, Co content in the photo-catalyst of 5 wt% and relative humidity (%RH) of 50%. The mechanism of TOL solar oxidation was related to the concentration of OH• and •O2-. radicals produced from the generated electrons and holes on the surface of Co-TiO2. The products formed during the photo-catalytic oxidation of TOL were mainly CO2 and water, and minor concentration of benzene and benzaldehyde. Overall, the Co-TiO2 could be used as a potential photo-catalyst for the oxidation of toluene in gas-phase streams on an industrial scale.
