Study on controlling of cadmium pollution with fly ash-bentonite blocking wall

Engineering Characteristics and Microscopic Mechanism of Soil-Cement-Bentonite (SCB) Cut-Off Wall Backfills with a Fixed Fluidity

Soil-cement-bentonite (SCB) backfill has been widely used in constructing cut-off walls to inhibit groundwater movement in contaminated sites. This study prepares SCB backfill with fixed fluidity. We conducted a series of experiments to investigate the engineering characteristics and microscopic mechanism of the backfill. The results indicate that the water content in the slurry was more sensitive to the bentonite content. The unconfined compression strength (UCS) value increased with an increase in the cement content, and the change with an increase in bentonite content was not noticeable. The permeability coefficient decreased distinctly with an increase in the cement and bentonite contents. The porosity of the SCB backfill increased with increasing bentonite content and decreased with increasing cement content. The UCS of SCB backfill was linearly and negatively correlated with the porosity; the permeability coefficient was not significantly related to the porosity. The percentage of micro- and small-pore throats in the backfill increased with increasing bentonite and cement contents. As cement and bentonite content increased by 6% in the backfill, the proportion of micro- and small-pore throats increased by 0.7% and 1.2%, respectively. The percentage of micro- and small-pore throats is deduced to be more suitable as a characterization parameter for the permeability of the SCB backfill. The overall results of this study show that the reasonably proportioned SCB backfill has potential as an eco-friendly and cost-effective material. Based on the requirements of strength and permeability coefficient (UCS > 100 kPa, 28 days permeability coefficient <1 × 10^-7 cm/s), we suggested using a backfill with 12% bentonite and 9% cement as the cut-off wall mix ratio.

Phenol Adsorption Mechanism of Organically Modified Bentonite and Its Microstructural Changes

Bentonite was modified with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The organically modified bentonite (OMB) was used to remove phenol from aqueous solution, the microstructural changes were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), and phenol adsorption kinetic was obtained using batch adsorption test results. The results indicated that the rate of adsorption of phenol onto the OMB was positively correlated with the initial concentration, and the maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 10.1 mg/g at the initial concentration of 150 mg/L at 25 °C and pH 10. The investigations of adsorption kinetics models showed that the adsorption kinetic was better reflected by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Furthermore, the properties of the OMB samples with different adsorption times were obtained by SEM and XRD. The statistic analysis revealed that the pore diameter of the OMB samples decreased with the increasing adsorption time and gradually reached equilibrium.

Protective effects of selenium yeast against cadmium-induced necroptosis through miR-26a-5p/PTEN/PI3K/AKT signaling pathway in chicken kidney

Cadmium (Cd) is a ubiquitous environmental pollutant of increasing worldwide concern to both humans and animals. Selenium yeast (Se-Y) is an organic selenium source that has been shown an advantage in antagonizing Cd-induced liver necroptosis in chicken. Herein, we described the discovery path of Se-Y antagonism in Cd-induced renal necroptosis in chicken through targeting miR-26a-5p/PTEN/PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. We set up four groups of chickens at random: control group (0.5 mg/kg Na₂SeO₃), Se-Y group (0.5 mg/kg Se-Y), Se-Y+Cd group (0.5 mg/kg Se-Y and 150 mg/kg CdCl₂) and Cd group (150 mg/kg CdCl₂ and 0.5 mg/kg Na₂SeO₃). Interestingly, we found Se-Y, but not Na₂SeO₃, significantly blocked Cd accumulation in the kidney and alleviated Cd-induced necroptosis through inhibiting the expression of RIP1, RIP3 and MLKL. Se-Y, activated miR-26a-5p expression, thereby down-regulated the expression of PTEN, resulting in the up-regulation of PI3K/AKT signaling pathway and the inhibition of oxidative stress in both Se-Y and Cd treated chickens. Besides that, Se-Y could also specifically reduce the expression levels of heat shock protein 60 (HSP60), HSP70 and HSP90 in Se-Y and Cd co-treated chickens. Taken together, our results showed that Se-Y has an added value to antagonize Cd-induced necroptosis in chicken kidney by regulating the miR-26a-5p/PTEN/PI3K/AKT signaling pathway and HSPs, indicating that Se-Y could serve as an effective antagonist on Cd-induced renal necroptosis in chickens.
