Sustainable and efficient technologies for removal and recovery of toxic and valuable metals from wastewater: Recent progress, challenges, and future perspectives

Due to their numerous effects on human health and the natural environment, water contamination with heavy metals and metalloids, caused by their extensive use in various technologies and industrial applications, continues to be a huge ecological issue that needs to be urgently tackled. Additionally, within the circular economy management framework, the recovery and recycling of metals-based waste as high value-added products (VAPs) is of great interest, owing to their high cost and the continuous depletion of their reserves and natural sources. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art technologies developed for the removal and recovery of metal pollutants from wastewater by providing an in-depth understanding of their remediation mechanisms, while analyzing and critically discussing the recent key advances regarding these treatment methods, their practical implementation and integration, as well as evaluating their advantages and remaining limitations. Herein, various treatment techniques are covered, including adsorption, reduction/oxidation, ion exchange, membrane separation technologies, solvents extraction, chemical precipitation/co-precipitation, coagulation-flocculation, flotation, and bioremediation. A particular emphasis is placed on full recovery of the captured metal pollutants in various reusable forms as metal-based VAPs, mainly as solid precipitates, which is a powerful tool that offers substantial enhancement of the remediation processes' sustainability and cost-effectiveness. At the end, we have identified some prospective research directions for future work on this topic, while presenting some recommendations that can promote sustainability and economic feasibility of the existing treatment technologies.

A comprehensive review on sources, analysis and toxicity of environmental pollutants and its removal methods from water environment

Natural and human anthropogenic activities increase the concentration of the toxic pollutant in the water environment; they could cause harmful effects even in their lower concentration. In humans, toxic pollutants damage the structural and functional properties of essential organs including the heart, liver, kidneys, reproductive systems and pancreas. To avoid the toxicity of the pollutant, they should be removed from the water environment. Since various conventional water/wastewater treatment technologies including precipitation, ion exchange, flocculation, filtration, electrodialysis and membrane separation are employed to reduce the concentration of the pollutant, they have various difficulties in implementation, efficiency and ecological perspective. Therefore, several researchers are now focusing on alternative and eco-friendly approach called biosorption to remove toxic contaminants from the water environment. The biosorption innovation is one of the acclaimed systems for water treatment. The noteworthy endeavours have been made throughout the years to grow profoundly particular and effective biosorbent materials that are more effective, abundantly available, and cost-effective. Biosorption is effectively executed by utilizing both living and dead biomasses of bacteria, fungi and algae. Moreover, agro-waste materials are also utilized as biosorbents due to their excellent surface properties, abundant availability and cost-effectiveness. A variety of physical and chemical treatments enhances the biosorption capabilities of biosorbents via modifying their surface properties. In this review, biosorption mechanism, influencing parameters and application of biosorbent materials towards the removal of toxic pollutants are discussed. The future research opportunities for sustainable wastewater treatment were also explained.

News on alginate recovery by forward osmosis: Reverse solute diffusion is useful

The water content in the recycled alginate solutions from aerobic granular sludge was nearly 100%. Forward osmosis (FO) has become an innovative dewatering technology. In this study, the FO concentration of sodium alginate (SA) was investigated using calcium chloride as a draw solute. The reverse solute flux (RSF) of calcium ions in FO had a beneficial effect, contrary to the findings of previous literature. The properties of the concentrated substances formed on the FO membrane on the feed side were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, verifying that calcium alginate (Ca-Alg), which can be used as a recycled material, was formed on the FO membrane on the feed side owing to the interaction between SA and permeable calcium ions. Water flux increased significantly with the increase in calcium chloride concentration, while the concentration of SA had little influence on the water flux in FO. Based on this discovery, we propose a novel method for the concentration and recovery of alginate, in which the RSF of calcium ions is utilized for recovering Ca-Alg by FO, with calcium chloride as a draw solute.

Anticorrosion Performance of PVDF Membranes Modified by Blending PTFE Nanoemulsion and Prepared through Usual Non-Solvent-Induced Phase Inversion Method

In this study, PVDF/PTFE composite membranes were prepared by adding a PTFE nanoemulsion to a PVDF solution and casting it through the conventional non-solvent-induced phase separation method. The objective was to explore the effectiveness of using a simple and economical method to modify PVDF membranes with PTFE to enhance their anticorrosion performance, especially under highly acidic or alkaline conditions. PTFE nanoparticles (of around 200 nm in size) in nanoemulsion form were blended with PVDF at a mass ratio of PTFE:PVDF in the range of 0–0.3:1. The obtained membranes were examined to determine the effect of the added PTFE nanoparticles on the structure of the modified PVDF membranes as well as on their mechanical strength and surface characteristics. The membranes were then immersed in various concentrations of acidic or alkaline solutions for varied durations ranging from a few days up to as long as 180 days (6 months). The impacts of by the corrosive solutions on the tensile strength, surface roughness, and water flux of the membranes with different exposure times were quantified. The results showed that although a certain extent of change may occur with extended immersion times, greatly enhanced anticorrosion performance was obtained with the prepared PVDF/PTFE membranes compared with the unmodified PVDF membrane. For example, after being immersed in 5 mol-H^+··L⁻¹ H₂SO₄, HCl, and HNO₃ solutions for 6 months, the tensile strength at breaking point remained at up to 69.70, 74.07, and 71.38%, respectively, of the initial strength for the PVDF/PTFE (M30) membrane. This was in contrast to values of only 55.77, 70.43, and 61.78% for the unmodified PVDF membrane (M0). Although the water flux and surface roughness showed a change trends to the tensile strength, the PVDF/PTFE (M30) membrane had much higher stability than the PVDF (M0) membrane. In a continuous filtration experiment containing H₂SO₄ at 0.01 mol-H⁺·L⁻¹ for 336 h (14 days), the PVDF/PTFE membrane showed a maximum flux change of less than 30%. This was in comparison with a change of up to 50% for the PVDF membrane. However, the PVDF/PTFE membranes did not seem to have a greatly enhanced anticorrosion performance in the alkaline solution environment tested.

Pressure-Driven Membrane Process: A Review of Advanced Technique for Heavy Metals Remediation

Pressure-driven processes have come a long way since they were introduced. These processes, namely Ultra-Filtration (UF), Nano-Filtration (NF), and Reverse-Osmosis (RO), aim to enhance the efficiency of wastewater treatment, thereby aiming at a cleaner production. Membranes may be polymeric, ceramic, metallic, or organo-mineral, and the filtration techniques differ in pore size from dense to porous membrane. The applied pressure varies according to the method used. These are being utilized in many exciting applications in, for example, the food industry, the pharmaceutical industry, and wastewater treatment. This paper attempts to comprehensively review the principle behind the different pressure-driven membrane technologies and their use in the removal of heavy metals from wastewater. The transport mechanism has been elaborated, which helps in the predictive modeling of the membrane system. Fouling of the membrane is perhaps the only barrier to the emergence of membrane technology and its full acceptance. However, with the use of innovative techniques of fabrication, this can be overcome. This review is concluded with perspective recommendations that can be incorporated by researchers worldwide as a new problem statement for their work.

Low-pressure volume retarded osmosis for removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances

Forward osmosis is an energy efficient process that is capable of recovering high-quality water from secondary wastewater treatment. However, regeneration of the draw solution (DS) is a problem that needs to be addressed. Herein, we developed and optimized a one-step process that does not require additional treatment for the DS. This process, called pressure assisted-volume retarded osmosis (PA-VRO), utilizes naturally occurring pressure with the aid of a small inlet pressure (< 1 bar). Poly(styrenesulfonate) was employed as the DS, for its high solubility in water and large molecular size (∼70,000 Da). Accordingly, real wastewater was employed as the feed solution for 48 h to remove perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) through PA-VRO. The rejection rates for PFOA/PFOS and poly(sodium-4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) were observed to exceed 98%, after 24 h and 99%, after 48 h. Moreover, there were no traceable amounts of PFOA/PFOS in the DS, and hence the detected concentrations of PFOA and PFOS can be attributed to the residuals from the equipment. Therefore, this well-optimized PA-VRO process can be utilized for potable water production from treated wastewater.

Mine drainage: Remediation technology and resource recovery

Drainage from current and historic mining operations remains a persistent environmental problem. Numerous research and development efforts were made in 2019 with a goal to minimize the impact of mine drainage on the environment, while other research endeavors addressed the mine drainage issue from a different perspective, where mine drainage was considered a resource for water and valuable products, such as metals, sulfuric acid, and rare earth elements. Thus, this review has two main sections: (a) focusing on research efforts in mine drainage remediation technology, and (b) emphasizing advances in resource recovery from mine drainage. The first section covers traditional and emerging passive and active treatment technologies. The second section summarizes resource recovery efforts using various technologies, such as selective precipitation, membrane process, and biological systems. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Significant progress continued to be made in the management of mine drainage and related issues. Recent remediation technology advances in mine drainage were presented. Technologies focusing on resource recovery from mine drainage were reviewed.
