Study of the atenolol degradation using a Nb/BDD electrode in a filter-press reactor

Novel Sb-doped SnO2 ceramic anode coated with a photoactive BiPO4 layer for the photoelectrochemical degradation of an emerging pollutant

In the present work, a study about the electrochemical and photoelectrochemical degradation of an emerging pollutant using an Sb-doped SnO₂ anode coated with a photocatalytic layer of BiPO₄ has been performed. The electrochemical characterization of the material was carried out by means of linear sweep voltammetry, light-pulsed chronoamperometry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. These studies confirmed that the material is photoactive at intermediate potential values (around 2.5 V), and that the charge transfer resistance decreases in the presence of light. A positive effect of the illuminated area on the degradation degree of norfloxacin was observed: at 15.50 mA cm^-2, the degradation rate was 83.37% in the absence of light, 92.24% with an illuminated area of 5.7 cm², and it increased up to 98.82% with an illuminated area of 11.4 cm². The kinetics of the process were evaluated, and the by-products of the degradation were identified by ion chromatography and HPLC. In the case of the mineralization degree, the effect of light is less significant, especially at higher current densities. The specific energy consumption of the process was lower in the photoelectrochemical experiments as compared to the experiments in dark conditions. At intermediate current densities (15.50 mA cm^-2) a decrease in energy consumption of 53% was achieved by illuminating the electrode.

Multi-object optimization of Navy-blue anodic oxidation via response surface models assisted with statistical and machine learning techniques

This study aims to model, analyze, and compare the electrochemical removal of Navy-blue dye (NB, %) and subsequent energy consumption (EC, Wh) using the integrated response surface modelling and optimization approaches. The Box-Behnken experimental design was exercised using current density, electrolyte concentration, pH and oxidation time as inputs, while NB removal and EC were recorded as responses for the implementation and analysis of multiple linear regression, support vector regression and artificial neural network models. The dual-response optimization using genetic algorithm generated multi-Pareto solutions for maximized NB removal at minimum energy cost, which were further ranked by employing the desirability function approach. The optimal parametric solution having total desirability of 0.804 is found when pH, current density, Na₂SO₄ concentration and electrolysis time were 6.4, 11.89 mA cm^-2, 0.055 M and 21.5 min, respectively. At these conditions, NB degradation and EC were 83.23% and 3.64 Wh, respectively. Sensitivity analyses revealed the influential patterns of variables on simultaneous optimization of NB removal and EC to be current density followed by treatment time and finally supporting electrolyte concentration. Statistical metrics of modeling and validation confirmed the accuracy of artificial neural network model followed by support vector regression and multiple linear regression anlaysis. The results revealed that statistical and computational modeling is an effective approach for the optimization of process variables of an electrochemical degradation process.

Kinetics of the Organic Compounds and Ammonium Nitrogen Electrochemical Oxidation in Landfill Leachates at Boron-Doped Diamond Anodes

Electrochemical oxidation (EO) of organic compounds and ammonium in the complex matrix of landfill leachates (LLs) was investigated using three different boron-doped diamond electrodes produced on silicon substrate (BDD/Si)(levels of boron doping [B]/[C] = 500, 10,000, and 15,000 ppm—0.5 k; 10 k, and 15 k, respectively) during 8-h tests. The LLs were collected from an old landfill in the Pomerania region (Northern Poland) and were characterized by a high concentration of N-NH₄⁺ (2069 ± 103 mg·L⁻¹), chemical oxygen demand (COD) (3608 ± 123 mg·L⁻¹), high salinity (2690 ± 70 mg Cl⁻·L⁻¹, 1353 ± 70 mg SO₄²⁻·L⁻¹), and poor biodegradability. The experiments revealed that electrochemical oxidation of LLs using BDD 0.5 k and current density (j) = 100 mA·cm⁻² was the most effective amongst those tested (C_8h/C₀: COD = 0.09 ± 0.14 mg·L⁻¹, N-NH₄⁺ = 0.39 ± 0.05 mg·L⁻¹). COD removal fits the model of pseudo-first-order reactions and N-NH₄⁺ removal in most cases follows second-order kinetics. The double increase in biodegradability index—to 0.22 ± 0.05 (BDD 0.5 k, j = 50 mA·cm⁻²) shows the potential application of EO prior biological treatment. Despite EO still being an energy consuming process, optimum conditions (COD removal > 70%) might be achieved after 4 h of treatment with an energy consumption of 200 kW·m⁻³ (BDD 0.5 k, j = 100 mA·cm⁻²).
