Effect of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii on the fate of CuO nanoparticles in aquatic environment

Different responses of Chlorella vulgaris to silver nanoparticles and silver ions under modulation of nitric oxide

Silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) are widely used in daily life because of their antibacterial properties. A fraction of Ag-NPs are released into the ecosystem during their production and utilization. The toxicity of Ag-NPs has been reported. However, it is still disputed whether the toxicity is mainly due to the released silver ions (Ag⁺). In addition, few studies have reported the response of algae to metal nanoparticles under modulation of nitric oxide (NO). In this study, Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris) was used as a model organism to study the toxic effects of Ag-NPs and Ag⁺ released from Ag-NPs on algae under the modulation of NO. The results showed that the biomass inhibition rate of Ag-NPs (44.84%) to C. vulgaris was higher than that of Ag⁺ (7.84%). Compared with Ag⁺, Ag-NPs induced more severe damage to photosynthetic pigments, photosynthetic system II (PSII) performance, and lipid peroxidation. More serious damage to cell permeability led to higher internalization of Ag under Ag-NPs stress. Application of exogenous NO reduced the inhibition ratio of photosynthetic pigments and chlorophyll autofluorescence. Further, NO reduced the MDA levels by scavenging reactive oxygen species induced by Ag-NPs. NO modulated the secretion of extracellular polymers and hampered the internalization of Ag. All these results showed that NO alleviates the toxicity of Ag-NPs to C. vulgaris. However, NO did not improve the toxic effects of Ag⁺. Our results provide new insights into the toxicity mechanism of Ag-NPs to algae modulated by the signal molecule NO.

Effect of the green synthesis of CuO plate-like nanoparticles on their photodegradation and antibacterial activities

Green synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles and its effects on photocatalytic dye degradation and antibacterial activities are reported. The synthesis of nanoparticles by green routes provides many advantages over chemical routes, including simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and fast processing route without using any costly or harmful chemicals. Tridax procumbense (coat buttons) plant root extract was used to synthesize copper oxide nanoparticles. The synthesized Tridax procumbense-copper oxide nanoparticles (TP-CuO NPs) were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering spectroscopy (DLS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The synthesized TP-CuO NPs were applied for photocatalytic dye degradation and antibacterial activity studies. The TP-CuO NPs exhibited a maximum antibacterial activity at 500 μg mL^-1 concentration against Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli showing inhibition zones of 7.5 mm and 7.2 mm, respectively. The photocatalytic ability of the TP-CuO was also tested against the textile dye Trypan blue (TB), and showed about 55% degradation after 48 h for 500 μg mL^-1 CuO NP concentration, showing a concentration-dependent degradation efficiency. This is the first work on TP-derived CuO nanoparticles and their photocatalytic and antimicrobial applications. Overall, this study supports the superiority of green-synthesized TP-CuO NPs as photocatalytic and antimicrobial agents.

Roles of polystyrene micro/nano-plastics as carriers on the toxicity of Pb2+ to Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

Little information could be consulted on the impacts of micro-plastics as carriers on toxicity of heavy metals, especially for micro-plastics of different sizes. Therefore, this study investigated the adsorption and desorption of Pb²⁺ on polystyrene plastics with nano- and micro-size (NPs and MPs), and further evaluated the roles of NPs and MPs as carriers on the toxicity of Pb²⁺ to Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (C. reinhardtii). The results showed that NPs showed higher adsorption capacities and a lower desorption rate for Pb²⁺ than MPs. The growth inhibitory rates (IR) of mixed and loaded Pb²⁺ with MPs to C. reinhardtii were 18.29% and 15.76%, respectively, which were lower than that of Pb²⁺ (22.28%). The presence of MPs decreased the bioavailability of Pb²⁺ to C. reinhardtii by a competitive adsorption for Pb²⁺ between MPs and algal cells, and suppressed membrane damage and oxidative stress caused by Pb²⁺. Maximum IR was observed for the mixture of NPs with Pb²⁺ (35.64%), followed by Pb²⁺ loaded on NPs (30.13%), single NPs (26.71%) and Pb²⁺ (21.01%). The internalization of NPs with absorbed Pb²⁺ intensified lipid peroxidation. The mixed and loaded microplastics with Pb²⁺ had more negative effects on C. reinhardtii than the single microplastics. The size-dependent effect was observed in the capacity of heavy metal ions carried by microplastics and the roles of microplastics as carriers on the toxicity of Pb²⁺. The results showed that the indirect risk of microplastics as 'carriers' could not be ignored, especially for NPs.

NiP/CuO composites: Electroless plating synthesis, antibiotic photodegradation and antibacterial properties

This work reports a simple method to prepare nickel-phosphorus (Ni-P) alloy modified CuO (Ni-P/CuO) composite, which shows excellent performance in terms of photodegradation antibiotics, particularly regarding the antibacterial properties. The Ni-P/CuO composites were prepared via two steps. The first step was to produce CuO by the hydrothermal method and the second step was to grow Ni-P in-situ on the surface of CuO through electroless plating. After loading of Ni-P, the photocatalytic activity of CuO for the decomposition of antibiotics is significantly increased under visible light irradiation. The photocatalytic activity of Ni-P/CuO with 4 wt% Ni-P loading is 25 times higher than that of CuO. Compared with CuO, the antibacterial activity of Ni-P/CuO with 4 wt% Ni-P loading against Escherichia coli is strongly increased. Based on the photoluminescence and photocurrent measurements of CuO and Ni-P/CuO, Ni-P cocatalyst improves the separation and transfer of the photogenerated charge in CuO, and enhances the photocatalytic activity of antibacterial performance. This work reveals that using Ni-P as the cocatalyst can strengthen the photocatalytic performance of CuO, which has great application potential in water purification and antibacterial treatments.

Harmful effects of metal(loid) oxide nanoparticles

Abstract

The incorporation of nanomaterials (NMs), including metal(loid) oxide (MOx) nanoparticles (NPs), in the most diversified consumer products, has grown enormously in recent decades. Consequently, the contact between humans and these materials increased, as well as their presence in the environment. This fact has raised concerns and uncertainties about the possible risks of NMs to human health and the adverse effects on the environment. These concerns underline the need and importance of assessing its nanosecurity. The present review focuses on the main mechanisms underlying the MOx NPs toxicity, illustrated with different biological models: release of toxic ions, cellular uptake of NPs, oxidative stress, shading effect on photosynthetic microorganisms, physical restrain and damage of cell wall. Additionally, the biological models used to evaluate the potential hazardous of nanomaterials are briefly presented, with particular emphasis on the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, as an alternative model in nanotoxicology. An overview containing recent scientific advances on cellular responses (toxic symptoms exhibited by yeasts) resulting from the interaction with MOx NPs (inhibition of cell proliferation, cell wall damage, alteration of function and morphology of organelles, presence of oxidative stress bio-indicators, gene expression changes, genotoxicity and cell dead) is critically presented. The elucidation of the toxic modes of action of MOx NPs in yeast cells can be very useful in providing additional clues about the impact of NPs on the physiology and metabolism of the eukaryotic cell. Current and future trends of MOx NPs toxicity, regarding their possible impacts on the environment and human health, are discussed.
