Study of the interaction Cu(II) - Carbendazim in natural waters by electrochemical techniques

Effect of resolution enhancement using metal ion assisted strategy based on electrospray ionization-ion mobility spectrometry: A case study of carbendazim and thiabendazole in fruits

A method for the rapid and simultaneous determination of carbendazim and thiabendazole residues by electrospray ionization-ion mobility spectrometry (ESI-IMS) combined with a metal ion-assisted technique was developed and validated in different fruit matrices. The metal ion assisted strategy was performed instead of tedious pre-separation procedures to overcome the limitation of low resolution of IMS. Four transition metal cations, Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II), were screened and their interactions with carbendazim and thiabendazole were investigated. The injection flow rate and metal ion concentration were optimized. The Cu(II) assisted approach helped to achieve well-separated peaks with a peak-to-peak resolution of 3.61. This method was then applied to detect carbendazim and thiabendazole simultaneously in apples, pears, bananas, and mangoes. The limit of detection (LOD) were 0.03 mg kg-1 and 0.13 mg kg-1 for carbendazim and thiabendazole, respectively, while spiked recoveries were 61.5-122.0% and 83.5-119.8%, respectively, with RSDs less than 13.9%. These satisfactory evaluation parameters indicated that the approach was capable of performing quantitative analysis of multi-pesticide residues. In addition, the feasibility of using metal ion assisted-ESI-IMS for the simultaneous detection also was theoretically demonstrated through molecular electrostatic potential analysis and binding energy calculation based on density functional theory (DFT). Both experimental and theoretical results revealed the effectiveness of the metal ion assisted strategy in improving the resolution of ESI-IMS.

Recent breakthroughs on the development of electrodeionization systems for toxic pollutants removal from water environment

Since ecosystems are becoming inherently polluted, long-term contaminant removal methods are required. Electrodeionization, in particular, has recently been demonstrated as an effective approach for eliminating ionic compounds from contaminated water sources. Being a more environmentally friendly technology is most likely the main reason for its eminence. It uses electricity to replace toxic contaminants that are conventionally used to regenerate and hence reducing the toxins associated with resin regeneration. In wastewater treatment, continuous electrodeionization system overcomes several limitations of ion exchange resins, notably ion dumping. This prospective assessment delves into the mechanism, principle, and theory of electrodeionization system. It also focused on the design and applications, particularly in the removal of toxic compounds, as well as current advances in the electrodeionization system. Recent breakthroughs in electrodeionization were comprehensively discussed. Further developments in electrodeionization systems are also projected, with improved efficiency at the time of functioning at lower costs because of reduced energy use, proving them desirable for commercial usage with a broad array of applications across the globe.

Synergistic formation of samarium oxide/graphene nanocomposite: A functional electrocatalyst for carbendazim detection

Herein, an electrochemical sensor based on samarium oxide anchored, reduced graphene oxide (Sm₂O₃/RGO) nanocomposite was developed for the rapid detection of carbendazim (CBZ). Different characterization methods were infused to deeply examine the morphology, composition, and elemental state of Sm₂O₃/RGO nanocomposite. The Sm₂O₃/RGO modified electrode exhibits an excellent electro-catalytic performance toward CBZ detection with a peak potential of +1.04 V in phosphate buffer solution (pH 3.0), which is superior to the RGO-, Sm₂O₃- and bare- electrodes. This remarkable activity can be credited to the synergetic effect generated by the robust interaction between Sm₂O₃ and RGO, resulting in a well-enhanced electrochemical sensing ability. Impressively, the fabricated sensor shows improved electrochemical performance in terms of the wide working range, detection limit, and strong sensitivity. On a peculiar note, the electrochemical sensing performances of CBZ detection based on Sm₂O₃/RGO nanocomposite demonstrate an extraordinary behavior compared to the prior documented electro-catalyst. In addition, the fabricated Sm₂O₃/RGO sensor also displays good operational stability, reproducibility, and repeatability towards the detection of CBZ. Furthermore, it was successfully applied to the CBZ detection in food and environmental water samples with satisfactory recovery. In accordance with our research findings, the Sm₂O₃/RGO nanocomposite could be used as an electro-active material for effectual electrochemical sensing of food and environmental pollutants.

A review on recent advances in electrodeionization for various environmental applications

The growing contamination of ecosystems necessitates the development of long-term pollution-removal technologies. Electrodeionization, in notably, has newly proven as an efficient method for removing ionic chemicals from polluted waterways. The fact that continuous electrodeionization is a greener technique is most probably the biggest cause for its success. It replaces the toxic chemicals typically required to replenish resins with electric power, therefore eliminating the wastewater involved with resin renewal. In water treatment, electrodeionization solves some of the drawbacks of ion exchange resin beds, particularly ion dumping as beds expire. This comprehensive review explores the theory, principles, and mechanisms of ion movement and separation in an electrodeionization unit. Also, it investigated the construction and usage, notably in removing heavy metal and its current developments in electrodeionization unit. Recent advances in Electrodeionization like polarity reversal, Resin wafer Electrodeionization, membrane free Electrodeionization, and electrostatic shielding with novel materials and hybrid process along with Electrodeionization were addressed. Further advancements are expected in electrodeionization systems that exhibit better efficacy while running at lower costs due to decreased energy usage, rendering them appealing for industrial scale up across a wide range of applications across the world.

Impact of gadolinium oxide with functionalized carbon nanosphere: A portable advanced electrocatalyst for pesticide detection in aqueous environmental samples

In this study, we developed a portable electrochemical sensor for realizing the pesticide residue in biological, environmental, and vegetable samples. A lower concentration of carbendazim pesticide (CBZ) was electrochemically exposed by newly developed gadolinium oxide/functionalized carbon nanosphere modified glassy carbon electrode (Gd₂O₃/f-CNS/GCE). The Gd₂O₃/f-CNS composite was prepared by two-pot ultrasonic-assisted co-precipitation method and characterized by various physicochemical analytical techniques. In addition, the electrocatalytic activity of the composite was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) towards the detection of CBZ. Besides, the Gd₂O₃/f-CNS/GCE exhibited excellent electrocatalytic capability and sensitivity towards the oxidation of CBZ due to its high electrochemical active surface area, good conductivity, and fast electron transfer ability. A wide linear range of CBZ (0.5-552 μM) was attained with a low level of detection (LOD) of 0.009 μM L^-1 and exceptional stability of 93.41%. The proposed sensor exemplifies practical feasibility in blood serum, water, and vegetable samples with an remarkable recovery range of 96.27-99.44% and primary current response of ∼91% after 15 days.
