Fabrication, application, optimization and working mechanism of Fe2O3 and its composites for contaminants elimination from wastewater

A review of functions and mechanisms of clay soil conditioners and catalysts in thermal remediation compared to emerging photo-thermal catalysis

High temperatures and providing sufficient time for the thermal desorption of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from contaminated clay soils can lead to intensive energy consumption. Therefore, this article provides a critical review of the potential additives which can improve soil texture and increase the volatility of POPs, and then discusses their enhanced mechanisms for contributing to a green economy. Ca-based additives have been used to reduce plasticity of bentonite clay, absorb water and replenish system heat. In contrast, non-Ca-based additives have been used to decrease the plasticity of kaolin clay. The soil structure and soil plasticity can be changed through cation exchange and flocculation processes. The transition metal oxides and alkali metal oxides can be applied to catalyze and oxidize polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, petroleum and emerging contaminants. In this system, reactive oxygen species (•O2- and •OH) are generated from thermal excitation without strong chemical oxidants. Moreover, multiple active ingredients in recycled solid wastes can be controlled to reduce soil plasticity and enhance thermal catalysis. Alternatively, the alkali, nano zero-valent iron and nano-TiN can catalyze hydrodechlorination of POPs under reductive conditions. Especially, photo and photo-thermal catalysis are discussed to accelerate replacement of fossil fuels by renewable energy in thermal remediation.

Hierarchical hollow α-Fe2O3/ZnFe2O4/Mn2O3 Janus micromotors as dynamic and efficient microcleaners for enhanced photo-Fenton elimination of organic pollutants

Micro/nanomotors that can promote mass transport have attracted more and more research concern in the photocatalysis field. Here we first report a newly-designed hierarchical α-Fe2O3/ZnFe2O4/Mn2O3 magnetic micromotor as a heterogeneous photocatalyst for the degradation of cationic dye methylene blue (MB) from wastewater. The resulting three-dimensional (3D) flower-like hollow Janus micromotors are fabricated through a green and scalable strategy, in which each component has different functions. ZnFe2O4 microspheres serve as a magnetic scaffold for the nucleation and growth of α-Fe2O3 nanosheets and for the recycling of the micromachine. α-Fe2O3 nanosheets have shown great potential as an ideal semiconductor material for the photocatalytic decontamination of pollutants. Mn2O3 nanoparticles are mainly utilized as a catalyst to produce O2 bubbles to propel the autonomic movement of the micromotors in the presence of H2O2 fuel and also as a Fenton-like catalyst to decompose H2O2 to generate reactive oxygen species. Furthermore, the resultant micromotors exhibited linear-like motion form with an average speed of 189.1 μm s-1 in 5 wt% H2O2 solution. Moreover, the self-driven micromotors exhibited a superior catalytic degradation property toward MB, which was attributed to the synergistic effect of heterogeneous photocatalyst and the boosted micro-mixing and mass transfer caused by the vigorous motion of the micro-actuator. The possible degradation intermediates and passways of MB by α-Fe2O3/ZnFe2O4/Mn2O3 micromotor were identified with time of flight mass spectroscopy (TOF-MS). The 3D Janus micromotors have the potential to be used as a high-efficiency and active heterogeneous photocatalyst for the degradation of organic pollutants.

Investigating the Effect of Bi2MoO6/g-C3N4 Ratio on Photocatalytic Degradation of Sulfadiazine under Visible Light

In this study, a series of Bi2MoO6/g-C3N4 composites were prepared through a wet-impregnation method, and their photocatalytic properties were investigated for the degradation of sulfadiazine (SDZ) under visible light irradiation. Physical and chemical characterizations were carried out using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-vis), and electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS). Compared to pure g-C3N4, the introduction of Bi2MoO6 significantly enhanced the visible light responsive photocatalytic activity, with the 1:32 Bi2MoO6/g-C3N4 composite exhibiting the highest photodegradation efficiency towards SDZ under visible light irradiation with a photocatalytic efficiency of 93.88% after 120 min of visible light irradiation. The improved photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the formation of a heterojunction between Bi2MoO6 and g-C3N4, which promotes the transfer of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, thereby elevating its photocatalytic activity. The results suggest that Bi2MoO6/g-C3N4 composites have potential application for the degradation of sulfonamides in aquatic environments.

Heavy metal stabilization remediation in polluted soils with stabilizing materials: a review

The remediation of soil contaminated by heavy metals has long been a concern of academics. This is due to the fact that heavy metals discharged into the environment as a result of natural and anthropogenic activities may have detrimental consequences for human health, the ecological environment, the economy, and society. Metal stabilization has received considerable attention and has shown to be a promising soil remediation option among the several techniques for the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils. This review discusses various stabilizing materials, including inorganic materials like clay minerals, phosphorus-containing materials, calcium silicon materials, metals, and metal oxides, as well as organic materials like manure, municipal solid waste, and biochar, for the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils. Through diverse remediation processes such as adsorption, complexation, precipitation, and redox reactions, these additives efficiently limit the biological effectiveness of heavy metals in soils. It should also be emphasized that the effectiveness of metal stabilization is influenced by soil pH, organic matter content, amendment type and dosage, heavy metal species and contamination level, and plant variety. Furthermore, a comprehensive overview of the methods for evaluating the effectiveness of heavy metal stabilization based on soil physicochemical properties, heavy metal morphology, and bioactivity has also been provided. At the same time, it is critical to assess the stability and timeliness of the heavy metals' long-term remedial effect. Finally, the priority should be on developing novel, efficient, environmentally friendly, and economically feasible stabilizing agents, as well as establishing a systematic assessment method and criteria for analyzing their long-term effects.

Novel hollow α-Fe2O3 nanofibers with robust performance enabled multi-functional applications

The synthetic strategies of achieving low-cost and high-performance nanofibers are of great significance in the field of catalysis and detection. In this work, a series of electrospun α-Fe₂O₃ nanofibers with hollow structure were prepared via combination technology of electrospinning, hydrothermal synthesis, and controlled calcination process. Especially, the influences of the crystal structure and morphology on the comprehensive properties of nanofibers have been explored in detail. The results indicated that α-Fe₂O₃ nanofibers could be obtained via the calcination at 600-800 °C. Rice-like α-Fe₂O₃ particles were observed to assemble a stable exoskeleton, supporting a robust tubular cavity. And this tubular structure turned gradually into groove-like structure as the calcination temperature increased, accompanied by tunable crystallization, specific surface area and magnetic property. Finally, combined with series of validation tests, including dye decolorization, electrochemical detection of trace cadmium ions and Fenton degradation of polyvinyl alcohol, the resultant α-Fe₂O₃ nanofibers have been demonstrated to show the potential application prospects.

Humic acid-coated hydrated ferric oxides-polymer nanocomposites for heavy metal removal in water

Water pollution by toxic heavy metals poses a threat to the environment and human bodies. Herein, a novel hydrated ferric oxide nanoparticle (HFO) based hybrid adsorbent was fabricated for the removal of toxic Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) from water. HFOs were immobilized into a porous resin D-201, and then this nanocomposite HFO-D201 was coated with humic acid (HA) to enhance the binding sites of target metals. Both HFOs and HA contribute to the sequestration of heavy metals. The as-synthesized hybrid adsorbent HA-HFO-D201 exhibited excellent performance on the removal of Cu(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II) in a pH range of 3-9, while no Fe leaching was observed. The presence of natural organic matter (20 mg C/L) has limited influences on the adsorption, and more than 85% of the target metals can be removed after treatment. HA-HFO-D201 showed preferable adsorption toward Cu(II) and Pb(II) (1 mg/L) from the background Ca²⁺ solution at much higher concentrations (100 mg/L), while the retention of Cd(II) (1 mg/L) decreased to some extent. Fixed-bed column experiments exhibited that the treatment capacities of HA-HFO-D201 are 90 bed volumes (BV) for Cd(II), 410 BV for Pb(II) and > 800 BV for Cu(II) of simulated contaminated water to meet the WHO drinking water standard. Meanwhile, depleted HA-HFO-D201 can be readily regenerated by a chelating agent Na₂EDTA for repeated use. The hybrid adsorbent HA-HFO-D201 has excellent potential to remove heavy metals in water treatment systems.

Activation of persulfate for degradation of sodium dodecyl sulfate by a hybrid catalyst hematite/cuprous sulfide with enhanced FeIII/FeII redox cycling

Surfactants are recalcitrant compounds that require advanced treatment for their degradation. Heterogeneous advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) using iron-based catalysts can be a promising method for surfactant degradation. The acceleration of the Fe^III/Fe^II redox cycling is the key to enhance the catalytic degradation. Herein, a hybrid catalyst composed of α-Fe₂O₃ and Cu₂S was synthesized to improve the reduction of Fe^III in a heterogeneous persulfate-AOP system. The results of XRD, Raman and TEM demonstrated the successful preparation of the hybrid catalyst. Because of the optimized Fe^II regeneration, the AOP containing the catalyst FC₇₅ achieved 100.0% removal of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in a neutral aquatic environment, significantly higher than 22.9 ± 2.4% with pure α-Fe₂O₃ or 39.6 ± 2.5% with pure Cu₂S. The catalyst FC₇₅ demonstrated effective SDS removal in the recycling test (82.7 ± 7.0% after six recycling test) and in actual wastewater (84.4 ± 4.5%). The regeneration of Fe^II was confirmed by the increased proportion of Fe^II from 39.5% in the fresh catalyst to 42.6% in the used catalyst. The main active species was revealed to be sulfate radicals under an acidic condition and shifted to hydroxyl radicals under a basic condition. In the hybrid catalyst, α-Fe₂O₃ provided Fe^II to activate persulfate to radicals, with an oxidation product of Fe^III, which was then reduced to Fe^II by Cu^I provided by Cu₂S, coupling with the oxidation of Cu^I to Cu^II. The S element in Cu₂S could directly or indirectly facilitate the Fe^III/Fe^II redox cycling as an electron donor. Those results have demonstrated that the developed hybrid catalyst is able to promote Fe^II regeneration for effective SDS removal.

Magnetic Core-Shell Iron Oxides-Based Nanophotocatalysts and Nanoadsorbents for Multifunctional Thin Films

In recent years, iron oxides-based nanostructured composite materials are of particular interest for the preparation of multifunctional thin films and membranes to be used in sustainable magnetic field adsorption and photocatalysis processes, intelligent coatings, and packing or bio-medical applications. In this paper, superparamagnetic iron oxide (core)-silica (shell) nanoparticles suitable for thin films and membrane functionalization were obtained by co-precipitation and ultrasonic-assisted sol-gel methods. The comparative/combined effect of the magnetic core co-precipitation temperature (80 and 95 °C) and ZnO-doping of the silica shell on the photocatalytic and nano-sorption properties of the resulted composite nanoparticles were investigated by ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) spectroscopy monitoring the discoloration of methylene blue (MB) solution under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and darkness, respectively. The morphology, structure, textural, and magnetic parameters of the investigated powders were evidenced by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) measurements, and saturation magnetization (vibrating sample magnetometry, VSM). The intraparticle diffusion model controlled the MB adsorption. The pseudo- and second-order kinetics described the MB photodegradation. When using SiO₂-shell functionalized nanoparticles, the adsorption and photodegradation constant rates are three–four times higher than for using starting core iron oxide nanoparticles. The obtained magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were tested for films deposition.

Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticle Nanodevices Based on Fe3O4 Coated by Megluminic Ligands for the Adsorption of Metal Anions from Water

The uptake ability toward arsenic(V), chromium(VI), and boron(III) ions of ad hoc functionalized magnetic nanostructured devices has been investigated. To this purpose, ligands based on meglumine have been synthesized and used to coat magnetite nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄) obtained by the co-precipitation methodology. The as-prepared hybrid material was characterized by infrared spectroscopy (IR), X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy combined with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. Moreover, its magnetic hysteresis properties were measured to evaluate its magnetic properties, and the adsorption kinetics and isothermal models were applied to discern between the different adsorption phenomena. Specifically, the better fitting was observed by the Langmuir isotherm model for all metal ions tested, highlighting a higher uptake in arsenic (28.2 mg/g), chromium (12.3 mg/g), and boron (23.7 mg/g) sorption values if compared with other magnetic nanostructured materials. After adsorption, an external magnetic stimulus can be used to efficiently remove nanomaterials from the water. Finally the nanomaterial can be reused up to five cycles and regenerated for another three cycles.

Theranostic applications of stimulus-responsive systems based on Fe2O3

According to the interaction of nanoparticles with biological systems, enthusiasm for nanotechnology in biomedical applications has been developed in the past decades. Fe2O3 nanoparticles, as the most stable iron oxide, have special merits that make them useful widely for detecting diseases, therapy, drug delivery, and monitoring the therapeutic process. This review presents the fabrication methods of Fe2O3-based materials and their photocatalytic and magnetic properties. Then, we highlight the application of Fe2O3-based nanoparticles in diagnosis and imaging, different therapy methods, and finally, stimulus-responsive systems, such as pH-responsive, magnetic-responsive, redox-responsive, and enzyme-responsive, with an emphasis on cancer treatment. In addition, the potential of Fe2O3 to combine diagnosis and therapy within a single particle called theranostic agent will be discussed.

Fabrication of Fe3O4/CuO@C composite from MOF-based materials as an efficient and magnetically separable photocatalyst for degradation of ciprofloxacin antibiotic

In this work, a novel ternary Fe₃O₄/CuO@C composite was fabricated using iron-doped copper 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate metal-organic frameworks as a self-sacrificing template. The morphological, structural, and optical properties of the prepared composite were determined by various techniques, and its photocatalytic behavior was investigated for degradation of ciprofloxacin under visible light irradiation. The Fe₃O₄/CuO@C material presented a porous structure with a rough surface of about 4-20 μm, and was composed of the Fe₃O₄/CuO nanocomposite uniformly distributed on a carbon support. The band gap energy of the obtained composite was found to be 2.0 eV, which was nearly two times lower than that of Fe₃O₄@C and CuO@C. As a result, Fe₃O₄/CuO@C exhibited high photocatalytic activity, achieving a degradation efficiency of 98.5% after 120 min irradiation at the optimum conditions (a catalyst dosage of 0.5 g L^-1, pH of 7, CIP concentration of 15 mg L^-1). The mechanism of ciprofloxacin degradation by Fe₃O₄/CuO@C was elucidated with the main contribution of O₂^-and OH reactive radicals. The new composite catalyst could easily be recovered from the treated solution using an external magnetic field due to its superparamagnetic nature. Fe₃O₄/CuO@C also showed good reusability and stability. The overall results indicated that the synthesized composite has significant application potential for controlling the risk of antibiotics in wastewater.

Chitosan-Grafted Halloysite Nanotubes-Fe3O4 Composite for Laccase-Immobilization and Sulfamethoxazole-Degradation

A surface-engineered nano-support for enzyme laccase-immobilization was designed by grafting the surface of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) with Fe3O4 nanoparticles and chitosan. Herein, HNTs were magnetized (HNTs-M) by a cost-effective reduction-precipitation method. The synthesized HNTs-M were grafted with 0.25%, 0.5%, 1%, and 2% chitosan (HNTs-M-chitosan), respectively. Synthesized HNTs-M-chitosan (0.25%), HNTs-M-chitosan (0.5%), HNTs-M-chitosan (1%) and HNTs-M-chitosan (2%) were linked with glutaraldehyde (GTA) for laccase immobilization. Among these formulations, HNTs-M-chitosan (1%) exhibited the highest laccase immobilization with 95.13% activity recovery and 100.12 mg/g of laccase loading. The optimized material was characterized thoroughly by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) analysis. The immobilized laccase (HNTs-M-chitosan (1%)-GTA-Laccase) exhibited higher pH, temperature, and storage stabilities. The HNTs-M-chitosan (1%)-GTA-Laccase possesses excellent reusability capabilities. At the end of 10 cycles of the reusability experiment, HNTs-M-chitosan (1%)-GTA-Laccase retained 59.88% of its initial activity. The immobilized laccase was utilized for redox-mediated degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX), resulting in 41%, 59%, and 62% degradation of SMX in the presence of 2,2'-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS), guaiacol (GUA), and syringaldehyde (SA), respectively. Repeated SMX degradation (57.10% after the sixth cycle) confirmed the potential of HNTs-M-chitosan (1%)-GTA-Laccase for environmental pollutant degradation. Thus, we successfully designed chitosan-based, rapidly separable super-magnetic nanotubes for efficacious enhancement of laccase biocatalysis, which can be applied as nano-supports for other enzymes.
