Abstract
Microalgal biomass (MB) is a promising feedstock for bioenergy production. Nonetheless, the cell recalcitrance and the low C/N ratio limit the methane yield during anaerobic digestion. As an alternative to overcome these challenges, MB co-digestion with different feedstocks has been proposed. Thus, this study evaluated the anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) of MB cultivated in wastewater with sugarcane vinasse (VIN) and residual glycerol from biodiesel production (GLY). Batch tests were conducted using augmented simplex-centroid mixture design to investigate the impact of AcoD on methane production (SMP), synergistic effects, and the influence on microbial community. When compared to MB digestion, 150 NmL CH4.g-1VS, binary and ternary AcoD achieved SMP increases from 120 to 337%. The combination of 16.7:16.7:66.7 (MB:VIN:GLY) showed the highest SMP for a ternary mixture (631 NmL CH4.g-1VS). Optimal synergies ranged from 1.3 to 1.4 and were primarily found for the MB:GLY AcoD. Acetoclastic Methanosaeta genus was predominant, regardless the combination between substrates. Despite the largest SMP obtained from the MB:GLY AcoD, other ternary mixtures were also highly synergetic and therefore had strong potential as a strategic renewable energy source.

Abstract
This research assessed the effect of decoupling hydraulic retention time (HRT) and solid retention time (SRT) on the production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) via anaerobic fermentation of beet molasses. The performance of a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR, STR = HTR = 30 days) and two anaerobic sequencing batch reactors (AnSBR) with decoupled STR (30 days) and HRT (20 and 10 days) was compared. Previously, a temperature study in batch reactors (25, 35, and 55 °C) revealed 25 °C as the optimal temperature to maximize the VFAs yield and the long-chain VFAs (> C4) production, being selected for the continuous reactors operation. An HRT of 20 days in AnSBR led to an enhancement in bioconversion efficiency into VFAs (55.5% chemical oxygen demand basis) compared to the CSTR (34.9%). In contrast, the CSTR allowed the production of valuable caproic acid (25.4% vs 4.1% w/w of total VFAs in AnSBR). Decreasing further the HRT to 10 days in AnSBR was detrimental in terms of bioconversion efficiency (21.7%) due to primary intermediates (lactate) accumulation. By decoupling HRT and SRT, VFAs were maximized, revealing HRT as an effective tool to drive specific conversion routes (butyrate- or lactate-fermentation).

Abstract
Carboxylic acids have become interesting platform molecules in the last years due to their versatility to act as carbon sources for different microorganisms or as precursors for the chemical industry. Among carboxylic acids, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) such as acetic, propionic, butyric, valeric, and caproic acids can be biotechnologically produced in an anaerobic fermentation process from lignocellulose or other organic wastes of agricultural, industrial, or municipal origin. The biosynthesis of SCFAs is advantageous compared to chemical synthesis, since the latter relies on fossil-derived raw materials, expensive and toxic catalysts and harsh process conditions. This review article gives an overview on biosynthesis of SCFAs from complex waste products. Different applications of SCFAs are explored and how these acids can be considered as a source of bioproducts, aiming at the development of a circular economy. The use of SCFAs as platform molecules requires adequate concentration and separation processes that are also addressed in this review. Various microorganisms such as bacteria or oleaginous yeasts can efficiently use SCFA mixtures derived from anaerobic fermentation, an attribute that can be exploited in microbial electrolytic cells or to produce biopolymers such as microbial oils or polyhydroxyalkanoates. Promising technologies for the microbial conversion of SCFAs into bioproducts are outlined with recent examples, highlighting SCFAs as interesting platform molecules for the development of future bioeconomy.

Abstract
In order to explore the role of thermal-alkaline pretreatment temperatures (TAPT) in sludge fermentation and the microbial characteristics, five groups (100, 120, 140, 160 °C and control group) were set up and the results showed that the increasing TAPT promoted the dissolution of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) and VFAs, but had slight influence on the release of NH4+-N and PO43--P. What's more, when it was 120 °C, the SCOD dissolution was comparable to that at 160 °C. Overall, 120 °C was the optimal condition, corresponding to the fact that the maximum release of SCOD was 8788.74 mg/L (2.63 times of the control group), the maximum dissolution of VFAs was 4596 mg/L (about 1.28 times of the control group). The trend of C/N was not significant. High-throughput sequencing showed that Firmicutes and Actinobacteriota were enriched with the temperature increasing, while Proteobacteria and Chloroflexi did not change significantly. Firmicutes was in a stable dominant position. Temperature conditions brought about significant changes in microbial interspecific interaction. Carbohydrate and amino acids had the highest metabolic abundance, especially at 120 °C group. The change rule of amino acid metabolism was similar to that of lipid metabolism, and the abundance of energy metabolism gradually increased with temperature. The protein metabolism was greatly affected by temperature. This study revealed the effect of microbial mechanism of TAPT on the sludge acid production efficiency.

Abstract
Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) has different physicochemical properties and microbial communities compared to conventional activated sludge (CAS), which may result in different behaviors during anaerobic fermentation and require further investigation. This study investigated the effect of granule size and sludge structure on the hydrolysis and acidification of AGS. Experimental results show that AGS exhibited significantly higher soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) dissolution and total volatile fatty acids (TVFA) production (330.6-430.3 mg/gVSS and 231.0-312.5 mgCOD/gVSS) compared to conventional activated sludge (CAS) (167.0 mg/gVSS and 133.3 mgCOD/gVSS). This is because AGS (90.6-96.9 mg/gVSS) had higher extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) content than CAS (81.2 mg/gVSS). EPS can not only serve as substrates but also release the trapped hydrolases. Moreover, the relative abundances of hydrolytic/acidogenic bacteria and genes were higher in AGS (0.46%-3.60% and 3.01 × 10-3%-4.04 × 10-3%) than in CAS (0.30% and 1.23 × 10-3%). The optimal granule size for AGS fermentation was found to be 500-1600 μm. The crushing of granule structure promoted the dissolution of small amounts of EPS and the release of some trapped hydrolases, thereby potentially enhancing the enzyme-substrate contacts and bacteria-substrate interactions. Therefore, the highest SCOD dissolution (510.6 mg/gVSS) and TVFA production (352.1 mgCOD/gVSS) from crushed 500-1600 μm AGS were observed. Overall, the findings of this study provide valuable insights into the recovery of organic carbon from AGS via anaerobic fermentation.

Abstract
Carboxylic acids, traditionally produced from fossil fuels, might be generated from renewable biomass resources via anaerobic fermentation. Considering that the microbial activity of this bioprocess is ruled by the imposed hydraulic retention time (HRT), this investigation explored the relationship between process stability and microbial community. Stepwise and direct HRT reduction strategies were assessed in terms of waste bioconversion into volatile fatty acids (VFAs). Microbial community dynamics revealed a microbial specialization along the HRT decrease. The direct implementation of low HRT resulted in drastic microbial fluctuations, leading to process failure at HRT below 6 days. Stepwise strategy for HRT reduction favored microbial adaptation, supporting maximum bioconversions efficiencies (32 % VFACOD/tCODin) at low HRT values (HRT 4 days). Microbial similarity analysis revealed Clostridiales, Lactobacillales and Bacteroidales orders as keystone microorganisms involved in VFAs production, being responsible for protein degradation and propionic acid accumulation.

Abstract
Anaerobic digestion (AD) processes are promising to effectively recover resources from organic wastes or wastewater. As a microbial-driven process, the functional anaerobic species played critical roles in AD. However, the lack of effective understanding of the correlations of varying microbial communities with different operational factors hinders the microbial regulation to improve the AD performance. In this paper, the main anaerobic functional microorganisms involved in different stages of AD processes were first demonstrated. Then, the response of anaerobic microbial community to different operating parameters, exogenous interfering substances and digestion substrates, as well as the digestion efficiency, were discussed. Finally, the research gaps and future directions on the understanding of functional microorganisms in AD were proposed. This review provides insightful knowledge of distribution patterns of functional microbial community in anaerobic digesters, and gives critical guidance to regulate and enrich specific functional microorganisms to accumulate certain AD products.

Abstract
Unspecific microorganisms consortia are normally used in anaerobic biodegradation of solid wastes. However, these consortia can be tuned to optimally obtain determined bioproducts. In this study, high value-added products and biogas were obtained via an innovative two-stage anaerobic bioprocess from microalgae biomass. The anaerobic fermentation (AF) entailed the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and subsequently, only the solid spent of AF effluent was valorized for methane production via conventional anaerobic digestion (AD). Applied conditions in AF (25 °C, HRT 8 days) favored Firmicutes predominance (64%) enabling a conversion efficiency of 32.1% g SCFAs-COD/g CODin. Opposite, a wider microbial biodiversity was determined in the AD reactor (35 °C, HRT 20 days), being mainly composed by Firmicutes (28.6%), Euryarchaeota (17.7%) and Proteobacteria (15.3%). AD of the AF-solid spent reached 168.9 mL CH4 /g CODin. Strikingly, operational conditions imposed mediated a microbial specialization that maximized product output.

Abstract
This study proposed a novel method to enhance short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production from anaerobic algae fermentation by using coconut shell ash. The maximum SCFAs production was 683.0 mg COD/g VS at the ash dosage of 1.2 g/g TS, which was about 1.4-folds that of the control, and the enhancement of acetate production was the main path for the promotion of SCFAs. Coconut shell ash increased the pH and alkalinity of digestate, thereby reducing the use of alkaline reagents and being more resistant to acidic environments. Coconut shell ash promoted the processes of solubilization, hydrolysis and acetogenesis, and enriched hydrolytic microorganisms (e.g., Candidatus Microthrix) and acidifying microorganisms with acetate as substrate (e.g., Caldilinea and Proteiniphilum). Anaerobic fermentation residue with ash containing inorganic elements has the potential to be used as fertilizer, making this waste-control-waste strategy with more economic and environmental benefits for potential practical applications.

Abstract
In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the use of renewable sources for bio-based production aiming at developing sustainable and feasible approaches towards a circular economy. Among these renewable sources, organic wastes (OWs) can be anaerobically digested to generate carboxylates like volatile fatty acids (VFAs), lactic acid, and longer-chain fatty acids that are regarded as novel building blocks for the synthesis of value-added compounds by yeasts. This review discusses on the processes that can be used to create valuable molecules from OW-derived VFAs; the pathways employed by the oleaginous yeast Yarrowia lipolytica to directly metabolize such molecules; and the relationship between OW composition, anaerobic digestion, and VFA profiles. The review also summarizes the current knowledge about VFA toxicity, the pathways by which VFAs are metabolized and the metabolic engineering strategies that can be employed in Y. lipolytica to produce value-added biobased compounds from VFAs.

Abstract
The harvesting of algal sludge from eutrophic lakes, including the large quantity of organic matters, has the potential to be used as valuable products through the process of resource recovery. This study investigates the fatty acid production potential from algal sludge via anaerobic fermentation under different pH values. The results indicated that the recovery of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) was the highest (3269.25 ± 32.89 mg·COD/L) at pH 11 after 7 days of fermentation. The SCFAs concentration at pH value 11 was 6.24, 1.27, 4.90, and 0.53 times higher compared with that at pH value 3, 5, 7, and 9, respectively. The SCFAs production was continually increased from day 1 to day 7 at pH value 7, 9, and 11. Much fewer middle- and long-chain fatty acids were produced compared with SCFAs. Gross. fatty acid production was the highest at pH 11. The concentrations of soluble protein and polysaccharide were the highest at pH 11, implying that the disruption of algal cells could have a high value at pH 11. The polysaccharide concentration was the lowest at pH 7. The fluorescence excitation-emission matrix profile implied that the disruption of algal cells was the greatest at pH 11. Methane production was greatest at pH 7 and 9. Overall, the results of this study revealed that a pH of 11 was optimal for the recovery of SCFAs from algal sludge due to the higher cell disruption, suitable ORP condition for SCFAs production and inhibition of methanogens.
