A comparative study on the dissolution and stability of beudantite and hidalgoite at pH 2-12 and 25-45 °C for the possible long-term simultaneous immobilization of arsenic and lead

Iron-Nitrogen Amendment Reduced Perfluoroalkyl Acids' Phyto-Uptake in the Wheat-Soil Ecosystem: Contributions of Dissolved Organic Matters in Soil Solution and Root Extracellular Polymeric Substances

Understanding the mechanisms underlying perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) translocation, distribution, and accumulation in wheat-soil ecosystems is essential for agricultural soil pollution control and crop ecological risk assessment. This study systematically investigated the translocation of 13 PFAAs under different iron and nitrogen fertilization conditions in a wheat-soil ecosystem. Short-chain PFAAs including PFBA, PFPeA, PFHxA, and PFBS mostly accumulated in soil solution (10.43-55.33%) and soluble extracellular polymeric substances (S-EPS) (11.39-14.77%) by the adsorption to amino- (-NH2) and hydroxyl (-OH) groups in dissolved organic matter (DOM). Other PFAAs with longer carbon chain lengths were mostly distributed on the soil particle surface by hydrophobic actions (74.63-94.24%). Iron-nitrogen amendments triggered (p < 0.05) soil iron-nitrogen cycling, rhizospheric reactive oxygen species fluctuations, and the concentration increases of -NH2 and -OH in the DOM structure. Thus, the accumulation capacity of PFAAs in soil solution and root EPS was increased. In sum, PFAAs' translocation from soil particles to wheat root was synergistically reduced by iron and nitrogen fertilization through increased adsorption of soil particles (p < 0.05) and the retention of soil solution and root EPSs. This study highlights the potential of iron-nitrogen amendments in decreasing the crop ecological risks to PFAAs' pollution.

Harmless Treatment of High Arsenic Tin Tailings and Environmental Durability Assessment

The treatment of arsenic (As) in tin tailings (TT) has been an urgent environmental problem, and stabilization/solidification (S/S) treatment is considered an effective technology to eliminate contamination of As. In this study, we developed a low-carbon and low-alkalinity material to S/S of As, and the results showed that the leaching concentration of As after treatment was lower than the Chinese soil environmental quality standard (0.1 mg/L). Based on a series of characterization tests, we found that OH- promoted the dissolution of As(III)-S, Fe-As(V), and amorphous As(III)-O species and formed Ca-As(III) and Ca-(V) species with Ca2+. Simultaneously, hydration produces calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) gel and ettringite by the form of adsorption and ion exchange to achieve S/S of As. We also assessed the durability of this material to acidity and temperature, and showed that the leaching concentration of As was below 0.1 mg/L at pH = 1-5 and temperature 20-60 °C. The method proposed in this study, S/S of As, has excellent effect and environmental durability, providing a new solution for harmless treatment of TT and its practical application.

Jarosites: Formation, Structure, Reactivity and Environmental

Jarosite, beudantite and alunite are members of the alunite supergroup. Minerals like those have been detected in different environments on Earth. These jarosite-type compounds are common in acid rock drainage environments and acid sulfate soils, resulting from the weathering of sulfide ores; they are also present in bioleaching systems because they are found in cultures of iron-oxidizing microorganisms. Jarosite is also generated in hydrometallurgical circuits, mainly in zinc hydrometallurgy. These minerals can be used to immobilize different elements such as arsenic and lead, among others. Jarosite and alunite have also been detected on the surface of Mars; the presence of jarosite and alunite and other sulfates provides evidence for the existence of water on Mars. In this work, an exhaustive review of the natural formation, synthesis, structure, thermodynamics, and reactivity of jarosite, beudantite and alunite are included. The capacity of jarosites for the immobilization of the elements, such as lead and arsenic, and information about studies related to jarosite formation on Mars are also included.
