Comprehensive assessment of enhancing dewaterability of dredged sediments by starch-based flocculant

Dredged sediment poses significant challenges for transportation and subsequent treatment due to its high water content and large volume. Coagulation, a common method of dewatering, can significantly enhance the dewatering performance of dredged sediment. This study synthesized a cationic starch-based flocculant [starch-3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride (St-CTA)] through etherification for the flocculation dewatering of dredged sediment. The effectiveness and mechanism of St-CTA as a dewatering flocculant for dredged sediment were investigated. The results demonstrated that when the dosage of St-CTA was 12 mg g-1 TSS (total suspended solids), the dehydration property of dredged sediment substantially improved, with the specific resistance to filtration (SRF) decreasing by 93.3%, the capillary suction time (CST) by 93.5%, and the water content of the filter cake (WC) by 9.7%. The removal rate of turbidity of the supernatant from the conditioned dredged sediment reached 99.6%, accelerating the settling speed and effectively capturing and separating fine particles from the sediment. St-CTA significantly increased the median particle size (D50), altered the microstructure and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of the flocs, and increased the fractal dimension of the flocs, making them more compact and conducive to the formation of drainage channels. These findings confirm the feasibility of using potentially environmentally friendly St-CTA as a rapid dewatering conditioning agent for sediment.

Enhancing phosphorus source apportionment in watersheds through species-specific analysis

Phosphorus (P) is a pivotal element responsible for triggering watershed eutrophication, and accurate source apportionment is a prerequisite for achieving the targeted prevention and control of P pollution. Current research predominantly emphasizes the allocation of total phosphorus (TP) loads from watershed pollution sources, with limited integration of source apportionment considering P species and their specific implications for eutrophication. This article conducts a retrospective analysis of the current state of research on watershed P source apportionment models, providing a comprehensive evaluation of three source apportionment methods, inventory analysis, diffusion models, and receptor models. Furthermore, a quantitative analysis of the impact of P species on watersheds is carried out, followed by the relationship between P species and the P source apportionment being critically clarified within watersheds. The study reveals that the impact of P on watershed eutrophication is highly dependent on P species, rather than absolute concentration of TP. Current research overlooking P species composition of pollution sources may render the acquired results of source apportionment incapable of assessing the impact of P sources on eutrophication accurately. In order to enhance the accuracy of watershed P pollution source apportionment, the following prospectives are recommended: (1) quantifying the P species composition of typical pollution sources; (2) revealing the mechanisms governing the migration and transformation of P species in watersheds; (3) expanding the application of traditional models and introducing novel methods to achieve quantitative source apportionment specifically for P species. Conducting source apportionment of specific species within a watershed contributes to a deeper understanding of P migration and transformation, enhancing the precise of management of P pollution sources and facilitating the targeted recovery of P resources.

Advanced removal of phosphorus from urban sewage using chemical precipitation by Fe-Al composite coagulants

Phosphorus (P) removal is a significant issue in wastewater treatment. This study applies Fe-Al composite coagulant to the advanced treatment of different P forms in biological effluent. For 90% total P removal, the dosage of FeCl3-AlCl3 composite coagulant reduces by 27.19% and 43.28% than FeCl3 and AlCl3 only, respectively. Changes in effluent P forms could explain the phenomenon of composite coagulant dosage reduction. The suspended P in the effluent of composite coagulant is easier removed by precipitation than single coagulant. In this study, the hydrolysis speciations of Fe3+, Fe2+, and Al3+ at a pH range are calculated by Visual MINTEQ. Changes in the morphology of metal hydroxides correlate with P removal at pH 4-9. Besides, analyses of scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) are performed on the coagulation precipitations. Fe2+ reacts directly with P to form flocs of Fe3(PO4)2, and Al2(SO4)3 assists in the sedimentation of the small-volume flocs. Al13 is a significant hydrolysis product of Al3+, and Fe and P would substitute for the peripheral AlVI of the Al13 structure to form stable Fe-O-Al covalent bonds.

Interception of fertile soil phosphorus leaching with immobilization materials: Recent progresses, opportunities and challenges

The non-point source pollution induced by phosphorus (P) leaching from fertile soils is accelerating the eutrophication phenomena in aqueous ecosystems. Herein, to alleviate and intercept the P leaching from the fertile soils, diverse P immobilization materials (PIM) which can transform labile P into stable P via a range of physicochemical and biological interactions have been adopted and received increasing research interest. However, the remediation mechanisms of different PIMs were complex and vary with soil properties and PIM application methods. In this review, the P fraction and mobility characteristics of different fertile soils were first introduced. Then, three kinds of PIM including inorganic materials (e.g., clay minerals and red mud), organic materials (e.g., polyacrylamide), and composites (e.g., modified biochar) applied in soil P leaching interception were concluded. The key factors (i.e., soil pH, soil texture, organic matter content and variable soil moisture) influencing PIM performance and potential PIMs used for reducing soil P leaching were also introduced. Current review can favor for proposing more suitable and insightful strategies to regulate the fertile soil P and achieve the dual goals of improving the crop land quality and yield, and preventing agricultural non-point source pollution.

Resource Utilization of Lake Sediment to Prepare “Sponge” Light Aggregate: Pore Structure and Water Retention Mechanism Study

Nitrogen, phosphorus, and metals’ pollutants discharged from industrial sources eventually accumulate in lake sediment, hence increasing the difficulty of sediment treatment and disposal. In this work, the water storage ceramsite is prepared from dredged lake sediment and cyano-bacterial powder. The effects of pyrolysis temperature and cyanobacterial sediment on the porosity of ceramsite were investigated. The results showed that the pyrolysis of organic matter and the de-composition of compounds or salts can produce gas, causing a rich pore structure inside the ceramsite. When the temperature increased to 1150 °C, vitrification would collapse the pore structure inside the material. At the cyanobacterial-to-sediment ratio of 3:7, the porosity and water absorption of the material could reach 81.82% and 92.45% when the pyrolysis temperature was 500 and 1050 °C, respectively. The internal macropore structure of ceramsite improved the water absorption performance, and the mesoporous structure was responsible for its long water release time and stable water release structure. The ceramsite exhibited a superior metals’ retention effect. Under different pH and temperature conditions, the consolidation rates of Fe, Ni, Mn, Cr, and Pb in ceramsite were all more than 99%, suggesting the safety of the material in environmental applications. This study demonstrates the feasibility of the resourceful production of water storage ceramsite from lake sediment and cyanobacterial slurry, which helps to reduce the impact of solid waste on the environment. Thus, this work provides a practical basis for guiding water storage ceramsite in the construction of sponge cities.

Co-utilization of lake sediment and blue-green algae for porous lightweight aggregate (ceramsite) production

Lake sediment and algal sludge with large output posed significant environmental risks. In this work, an idea of co-utilization of both solid wastes for the production of ceramsite (a sort of porous lightweight aggregates as building materials) was proposed and validated for the first time. The treatment process contained a dewatering step by a flocculation-pressure filtration method, and a sintered ceramsite preparation step. Effects of flocculant type and dosage on the dewatering performance were studied in the first step. An environmental-friendly amphoteric starch flocculant with a dosage of 12 mg/(g dried sample) was found to achieve the best dewatering performance. Effects of raw material mass ratio, sintering temperature and time in the second step were investigated. Under the optimal conditions (60 wt% of dewatered sediment; 20 wt% of dewatered algal sludge; 20 wt% of additives (fly ash: calcium oxide: kaolin = 2:1:2); sintering temperature: 1100 °C; time: 35 min), the obtained ceramsite met the Chinese National Standard as a qualified building material, with reliable environmental safety according to the leaching results for both heavy metals and microcystins. Both environmental and economic benefits of the proposed treatment were assessed. The process completely followed the rules of "reduction, harmlessness and resource utilization" for solid waste treatment and disposal; Meanwhile, the profit of the proposed ceramsite production could be more than 2.3 US dollar/m³. The co-utilization method in this work acted as a good example for the comprehensive management of solid wastes in water-rich areas.
