Selenium dynamics in plants: Uptake, transport, toxicity, and sustainable management strategies

Selenium (Se) plays crucial roles in human, animal, and plant physiology, but its varied plant functions remain complex and not fully understood. While Se deficiency affects over a billion people worldwide, excessive Se levels can be toxic, presenting substantial risks to ecosystem health and public safety. The delicate balance between Se's beneficial and harmful effects necessitates a deeper understanding of its speciation dynamics and how different organisms within ecosystems respond to Se. Since humans primarily consume Se through Se-rich foods, exploring Se's behavior, uptake, and transport within agroecosystems is critical to creating effective management strategies. Traditional physicochemical methods for Se remediation are often expensive and potentially harmful to the environment, pushing the need for more sustainable solutions. In recent years, phytotechnologies have gained traction as a promising approach to Se management by harnessing plants' natural abilities to absorb, accumulate, metabolize, and volatilize Se. These strategies range from boosting Se uptake and tolerance in plants to releasing Se as less toxic volatile compounds or utilizing it as a biofortified supplement, opening up diverse possibilities for managing Se, offering sustainable pathways to improve crop nutritional quality, and protecting human health in different environmental contexts. However, closing the gaps in our understanding of Se dynamics within agricultural systems calls for a united front of interdisciplinary collaboration from biology to environmental science, agriculture, and public health, which has a crucial role to play. Phytotechnologies offer a sustainable bridge between Se deficiency and toxicity, but further research is needed to optimize these methods and explore their potential in various agricultural and environmental settings. By shedding light on Se's multifaceted roles and refining management strategies, this review contributes to developing cost-effective and eco-friendly approaches for Se management in agroecosystems. It aims to lead the way toward a healthier and more sustainable future by balancing the need to address Se deficiency and mitigate the risks of Se toxicity.

Regulation of Structure and Anion-Exchange Performance of Layered Double Hydroxide: Function of the Metal Cation Composition of a Brucite-like Layer

As anion-exchange materials, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have attracted increasing attention in the fields of selective adsorption and separation, controlled drug release, and environmental remediation. The metal cation composition of the laminate is the essential factor that determines the anion-exchange performance of LDHs. Herein, we review the regulating effects of the metal cation composition on the anion-exchange properties and LDH structure. Specifically, the internal factors affecting the anion-exchange performance of LDHs were analyzed and summarized. These include the intercalation driving force, interlayer domain environment, and LDH morphology, which significantly affect the anion selectivity, anion-exchange capacity, and anion arrangement. By changing the species, valence state, size, and mole ratio of the metal cations, the structural characteristics, charge density, and interlayer spacing of LDHs can be adjusted, which affect the anion-exchange performance of LDHs. The present challenges and future prospects of LDHs are also discussed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first review to summarize the essential relationship between the metal ion composition and anion-exchange performance of laminates, providing important insights for regulating the anion-exchange performance of LDHs.

Environmental impact of amino acids on selenate-bearing hydrocalumite: Experimental and DFT studies

Selenium (Se) radioactive wastes can be disposed through stabilization/solidification (S/S) based on the cementitious matrix on hydration products, where hydrocalumite (Ca₂Al-LDH) is expected to play an important role in the retention of SeO₄^2-. Natural organic matters (NOMs) are known to be a risk to affect the transportation and mobility of undesirable chemical species in the pedosphere which receives the low level radioactive wastes (LLW). In the present work, five amino acids were selected as the simplified models of NOMs in the pedosphere to explore their effects on the stability of Ca₂Al-LDH after immobilized SeO₄^2- under alkaline conditions. As the loading amount of amino acids on Ca₂Al-LDH increasing, release of SeO₄^2- was enhanced in HGly, H₂Asp, and H₂Cys series, while no enhancement was observed in HPhe and HTrp series. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation predicted ion-exchange of amino acids and CO₃^2- with SeO₄^2- in a unit cell of LDH model. The intercalation of Asp^2- and CO₃^2- caused 003 peaks in XRD sharper and d₀₀₃ decreased from 8.15 Å to 7.70 Å which is assigned to Ca₂Al-LDH(Asp, CO₃). In H₂Cys series, the 003 peaks were kept broad and SeO₄^2- was still relatively maintained in LDH which was caused by the lower amounts of intercalated CO₃^2- in the presence of H₂Cys. Amino acids in the interlayer of Ca₂Al-LDH have several possible configurations, where the most stable one is prone to be in a horizontal direction through hydrogen bonds and Ca-O chemical bonds. This provides an insight on the stability of selenate immobilized in hydrocalumite, which can be produced in cement disposing in the pedosphere for a long term of burying. Not only carbonate but also small molecular organic matters like amino acids possibly give environmental impact on the mobility of low level anionic radionuclides in LDH.
