Enhanced bioremediation of cyclohexaneacetic acid in offshore sediments with green synthetic iron oxide and Pseudoalteromonas sp

Naphthenic acids (NAs) have been found to exert serious threats on offshore sediment ecosystems and human health in recent years, which entails us the urgent need for NAs remediation. Bioremediation is considered an ideal method for sediment remediation due to ecological sustainability and economic feasibility. However, current bioremediation efficiency of offshore sediments suffers from relatively slow and there has never any attempts to bioremediate offshore sediment NAs contamination hitherto. In this study, the green synthetic iron oxides (gFeOx) based on Laminaria extracts was employed to enhance the biodegradation of NAs (Cyclohexylacetic acid, CHAA) in offshore sediments by Pseudoalteromonas sp. JSTW (an indigenous microorganism). The results showed that CHAA (20 mg·kg-1) in offshore sediments was removed almost 100% within 7 days at 30 mg·kg-1 gFeOx and 0.6 mg·kg-1 Strain JSTW. High-throughput sequencing results revealed that the structure and function of sediment microbial community were essentially restored to uncontaminated levels after bioremediation, highlighting the joint remediation approach is an efficient and eco-friendly method. Overall, this work has firstly provided insights into the application for NAs in situ bioremediation in offshore sediments.

Electron-deficient Fe3O4@AC-NH2@Cu-MOF nanoparticles for enhanced degradation of electron-rich benzene derivatives via synergistic adsorption and catalytic oxidation

Benzene derivatives in wastewater have negative impacts on ecosystems and human health, making their removal prior to discharge imperative. In this study, Fe3O4@AC-NH2@Cu-opa (AC-NH2 = aminoclay, Cu-opa = [Cu(opa)(bipy)0.5(H2O)]n (H2opa = 3-(4-oxypyridinium-1-yl) phthalic acid)) nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized as adsorbent and catalyst for phenolic compound removal from wastewater. Fe3O4@AC-NH2@Cu-opa NPs demonstrated outstanding performance in the adsorption of phenol, exhibiting a remarkable adsorption capacity of up to 166.39 mg g-1 according to the Langmuir model. The composite also exhibited higher Fenton activity toward the degradation of electron-rich organic phenolic pollutants, with a rate approximately 3.4 times higher than that of Fe3O4 alone. The high catalytic activity of the composite was attributed to the large surface area and abundant active sites of the 2D charge-separated Cu-MOF. Meanwhile, the superparamagnetism of the Fe3O4 core enabled magnetic recollection and reuse without any significant loss of activity. Therefore, use of Fe3O4@AC-NH2@Cu-opa/H2O2 shows potential in an efficient method for the removal of phenolic compounds from wastewater.

Bioremediation of Soil from Petroleum Contamination

Petroleum is the most common global fossil fuel. It is a complex multi-component system mainly composed of various hydrocarbons such as alkanes, cycloalkanes, mono-, bi- and polyaromatic compounds, resins and asphaltenes. In spite of humanity’s need for petroleum, it negatively affects the environment due to its toxicity. The ecological problem is especially serious at petroleum mining sites or during petroleum transportation. Since it is not possible to replace petroleum with less toxic fuel, ways to reduce the toxic impact of petroleum hydrocarbons on the environment need to be developed. This review addresses bioremediation, a biological approach to petroleum degradation, which is mainly performed by microbes. The pathways of degradation of alkanes, alkenes and aromatic hydrocarbons are presented in detail. The effects of temperature, aeration and the presence of biogenic elements on microbial degradation of petroleum are discussed. Plant–microbe interactions involved with the bioremediation of petroleum-polluted soils are specifically addressed. The data presented in this review point to the great potential of bioremediation practices for cleaning soils of petroleum.
