Inhibition of AHL-mediated quorum sensing to control biofilm thickness in microbial fuel cell by using Rhodococcus sp. BH4

Benefits of fungal-to-bacterial quorum quenching as anti-biofouling strategy in membrane bioreactors for wastewater treatment and water reuse

This study addresses membrane biofouling in membrane bioreactors (MBRs) by exploring fungal-to-bacterial quorum quenching (QQ) strategies. While most research has been focused on bacterial-to-bacterial QQ tactics, this study identified fungal strain Vanrija sp. MS1, which is capable of degrading N-acyl-homoserine lactones (signaling molecules of Gram-negative bacteria). To determine the benefits of fungal over bacterial strains, after immobilization on fluidizing spherical beads in an MBR, MS1 significantly reduced the fouling rate by 1.8-fold compared to control MBR, decreased extracellular polymeric substance levels in the biofilm during MBR operation, and favorably changed microbial community and bacterial network, resulting in biofouling mitigation. It is noteworthy that, unlike Rhodococcus sp. BH4, MS1 enhanced QQ activity when switching from neutral to acidic conditions. These results suggest that MS1 has the potential for the effective treatment of acidic industrial wastewater sources such as semiconductor and secondary battery wastewater using MBRs.

Biodegradable ultrafiltration membrane enhanced with anti-biofouling agent from Anacardium occidentale extract

Our research focuses on developing environmentally friendly biodegradable ultrafiltration (UF) membranes for small-scale water purification in areas lacking infrastructure or during emergencies. To address biofouling challenges without resorting to harmful chemicals, we incorporate bio-based extracts, such as methyl gallate from A. occidentale leaves, a Malaysian ulam herb, known for its quorum sensing inhibition (QSI) properties. The methyl gallate enriched extract was purified by solvent partitioning and integrated into cellulose-based UF membranes (0 to 7.5% w w-1) through phase inversion technique. The resulting membranes exhibited enhanced anti-organic fouling and anti-biofouling properties, with flux recovery ratio (FRR) of 87.84 ± 2.00% against bovine serum albumin and FRRs of 76.67 ± 1.89% and 69.57 ± 1.77% against E. coli and S. aureus, respectively. The CA/MG-5 membrane showed a 224% improvement in pure water flux (PWF) compared to the neat CA membrane. Our innovative approach significantly improves PWF, presenting an environmentally friendly method for biofouling prevention in UF membrane applications.

Engineering extracellular electron transfer pathways of electroactive microorganisms by synthetic biology for energy and chemicals production

The excessive consumption of fossil fuels causes massive emission of CO2, leading to climate deterioration and environmental pollution. The development of substitutes and sustainable energy sources to replace fossil fuels has become a worldwide priority. Bio-electrochemical systems (BESs), employing redox reactions of electroactive microorganisms (EAMs) on electrodes to achieve a meritorious combination of biocatalysis and electrocatalysis, provide a green and sustainable alternative approach for bioremediation, CO2 fixation, and energy and chemicals production. EAMs, including exoelectrogens and electrotrophs, perform extracellular electron transfer (EET) (i.e., outward and inward EET), respectively, to exchange energy with the environment, whose rate determines the efficiency and performance of BESs. Therefore, we review the synthetic biology strategies developed in the last decade for engineering EAMs to enhance the EET rate in cell-electrode interfaces for facilitating the production of electricity energy and value-added chemicals, which include (1) progress in genetic manipulation and editing tools to achieve the efficient regulation of gene expression, knockout, and knockdown of EAMs; (2) synthetic biological engineering strategies to enhance the outward EET of exoelectrogens to anodes for electricity power production and anodic electro-fermentation (AEF) for chemicals production, including (i) broadening and strengthening substrate utilization, (ii) increasing the intracellular releasable reducing equivalents, (iii) optimizing c-type cytochrome (c-Cyts) expression and maturation, (iv) enhancing conductive nanowire biosynthesis and modification, (v) promoting electron shuttle biosynthesis, secretion, and immobilization, (vi) engineering global regulators to promote EET rate, (vii) facilitating biofilm formation, and (viii) constructing cell-material hybrids; (3) the mechanisms of inward EET, CO2 fixation pathway, and engineering strategies for improving the inward EET of electrotrophic cells for CO2 reduction and chemical production, including (i) programming metabolic pathways of electrotrophs, (ii) rewiring bioelectrical circuits for enhancing inward EET, and (iii) constructing microbial (photo)electrosynthesis by cell-material hybridization; (4) perspectives on future challenges and opportunities for engineering EET to develop highly efficient BESs for sustainable energy and chemical production. We expect that this review will provide a theoretical basis for the future development of BESs in energy harvesting, CO2 fixation, and chemical synthesis.

Towards a new understanding of bioelectrochemical systems from the perspective of microecosystems: A critical review

Bioelectrochemical system (BES) holds promise for sustainable energy generation and wastewater treatment. The microbial communities, as the core of BES, play a crucial role in its performance, thus needing to be systematically studied. However, researches considering microbial communities in BES from an ecological perspective are limited. This review provided a comprehensive summary of the BES with special emphasis on microecological principles, commencing with the dynamic formation and succession of the microbial communities. It also clarified the intricate interspecies relationships and quorum-sensing mechanisms regulated by dominant species. Furthermore, this review addressed the crucial themes in BES-related researches on ecological processes, including growth patterns, ecological structures, and defense strategies against external disturbances. By offering this novel perspective, it would contribute to enhancing the understanding of BES-centered technologies and facilitating future research in this field.

Emerging trends in the inhibition of bacterial molecular communication: An overview

Quorum sensing (QS) is a molecular cell-cell communication utilized by several bacteria and some fungi. It involves cell density dependent gene expression that includes extra polymeric substance production, sporulation, antibiotic production, motility, competence, symbiosis and conjugation. These expressions were carried out by different signaling molecules like acyl homo-serine lactone (AHL) and auto-inducing peptides (AIPs) which was effluxed by gram negative and gram positive bacteria. Pathogenic bacteria and biofilms often exhibit high resistance to antibiotics, attributed to the presence of antibiotic efflux pumps, reduced membrane permeability, and enzymes that deactivate quorum sensing (QS) inhibitors. To counteract virulence and multi-drug resistance (MDR), novel strategies such as employing quorum sensing (QS) inhibitors and quorum quenchers are employed. It targets signaling molecules with synthesis and prevents the signal from binding to receptors. In this present review, the mechanisms of QS along with inhibitors from different sources are described. These strategies potentially interfere with QS and it can be applied in different fields, mainly in hospitals and marine environments where the pathogenic infections and biofilm formation are highly involved.

Characterization of the microbial community and prediction of metabolic functions in an anaerobic/oxic system with magnetic micropolystyrene as a biocarrier

Polystyrene (PS) and magnetic polystyrene (MPS) materials have been used extensively in wastewater treatment. In this research, a 55-day anaerobic/oxic process was carried out to evaluate the effects of PS and MPS on microorganisms under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Scanning electron microscopy results revealed differences in the entanglement state of the sludge with the biocarrier due to differences in surface morphology. High-throughput sequencing analysis showed that the microbial communities differed considerably in the presence of PS and MPS addition under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The highest abundance and diversity were observed in the PS reactor, with 929 observed species and a PD_whole_tree index of 91.58 under anaerobic conditions. MPS promoted the enrichment of bacteria related to nitrogen recycling such as Nitrospirota which increased from 1.13% in the seeding sludge to 3.48% and 10.07% in the aerobic reactors with PS and MPS, respectively. Moreover, advanced analysis showed that PS inhibited many microbial functions (e.g., protein export, nitrogen metabolism), and MPS alleviated this inhibition. This study provides significant insights into the microbial effects of PS and MPS and may shed light on biocarrier selection in future studies.

Efficient biodechlorination at the Fe3O4-based silicone powder modified chlorobenzene-affinity anode

The treatment of chlorinated volatile organic compounds faces challenges of secondary pollution and less-efficiency due to the substitution of chlorine. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) provide a promising opportunity for its abatement. In this study, a novel Fe3O4 nanoparticles and silicone-based powder (SP) were integrated and immobilized on carbon felt (CF+Fe3O4@SP), which was further used as anode in the chlorobenzene (CB) powered MFC. Owing to the cooperation between SP and Fe3O4, the anode exhibited excellent performance for both biodechlorination and power generation. The results indicated that the CF+Fe3O4@SP anode loaded MFC achieved 98.5% removal of 200 mg/L CB within 28 h, and the maximum power density was 675.9 mW/m3, which was a 45.6% increase compared to that of the bare CF anode. Microbial community analysis indicated that the genera Comamonadaceae, Pandoraea, Obscuribacteraceae, and Truepera were dominated, especially, the Comamonadaceae and Obscuribacteraceae showed outstanding affinity for Fe3O4 and SP, respectively. Moreover, the proportion of live bacteria, secretion of extracellular polymer substances, and protein content in the extracellular polymer substances were significantly increased by modifying Fe3O4@SP onto the carbon-based anode. Thus, this study provides new insights into the development of MFCs for refractory and hydrophobic volatile organic compounds removal.

A method establishment and application for biofilm quorum quenching activity assay

The existence of quorum sensing (QS) and quorum quenching (QQ) plays important roles in biofilm formation. However, direct detection of QS ability is difficult due to the low concentrations of signal molecules inside the biofilm. Therefore, QQ activity is typically used to indicate the attribution of QS/QQ to the biofilm. Nevertheless, current detection methods of QQ activity based on biosensors present undesirable operability and accuracy. In this study, the 96-well plate assay based on a specific biosensor, Agrobacterium tumefaciens A136, and a colorimetric substance, X-gal was established. The reliable fitting results were obtained by standardizing the composition of the A136 X-gal assay solution and optimizing the operating conditions. This method improved the accuracy of QQ activity detection and reduced time and cost consumption. Finally, the 96-well plate assay was successfully applied to detect the QQ activities of biofilm samples and explore possible environmental influencing factors. In general, this study provided a new strategy for understanding the QQ effect in biofilm systems.

Role of bacterial quorum sensing and quenching mechanism in the efficient operation of microbial electrochemical technologies: A state-of-the-art review

Microbial electrochemical technologies (METs) are a group of innovative technologies that produce valuables like bioelectricity and biofuels with the simultaneous treatment of wastewater from microorganisms known as electroactive microorganisms. The electroactive microorganisms are capable of transferring electrons to the anode of a MET through various metabolic pathways such as direct (via cytochrome or pili) or indirect (through transporters) transfer. Though this technology is promising, the inferior yield of valuables and the high cost of reactor fabrication are presently impeding the large-scale application of this technology. Therefore, to overcome these major bottlenecks, a lot of research has been dedicated to the application of bacterial signalling, for instance, quorum sensing (QS) and quorum quenching (QQ) mechanisms in METs to improve its efficacy in order to achieve a higher power density and to make it more cost-effective. The QS circuit in bacteria produces auto-inducer signal molecules, which enhances the biofilm-forming ability and regulates the bacterial attachment on the electrode of METs. On the other hand, the QQ circuit can effectively function as an antifouling agent for the membranes used in METs and microbial membrane bioreactors, which is imperative for their stable long-term operation. This state-of-the-art review thus distinctly describes in detail the interaction between the QQ and QS systems in bacteria employed in METs to generate value-added by-products, antifouling strategies, and the recent applications of the signalling mechanisms in METs to improve their yield. Further, the article also throws some light on the recent advancements and the challenges faced while incorporating QS and QQ mechanisms in various types of METs. Thus, this review article will help budding researchers in upscaling METs with the integration of the QS signalling mechanism in METs.

Bacterial community structure of electrogenic biofilm developed on modified graphite anode in microbial fuel cell

Formation of electrogenic microbial biofilm on the electrode is critical for harvesting electrical power from wastewater in microbial biofuel cells (MFCs). Although the knowledge of bacterial community structures in the biofilm is vital for the rational design of MFC electrodes, an in-depth study on the subject is still awaiting. Herein, we attempt to address this issue by creating electrogenic biofilm on modified graphite anodes assembled in an air-cathode MFC. The modification was performed with reduced graphene oxide (rGO), polyaniline (PANI), and carbon nanotube (CNTs) separately. To accelerate the growth of the biofilm, soybean-potato composite (plant) powder was blended with these conductive materials during the fabrication of the anodes. The MFC fabricated with PANI-based anode delivered the current density of 324.2 mA cm-2, followed by CNTs (248.75 mA cm-2), rGO (193 mA cm-2), and blank (without coating) (151 mA cm-2) graphite electrodes. Likewise, the PANI-based anode supported a robust biofilm growth containing maximum bacterial cell densities with diverse shapes and sizes of the cells and broad metabolic functionality. The alpha diversity of the biofilm developed over the anode coated with PANI was the loftiest operational taxonomic unit (2058 OUT) and Shannon index (7.56), as disclosed from the high-throughput 16S rRNA sequence analysis. Further, within these taxonomic units, exoelectrogenic phyla comprising Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteroidetes were maximum with their corresponding level (%) 45.5, 36.2, and 9.8. The relative abundance of Gammaproteobacteria, Clostridia, and Bacilli at the class level, while Pseudomonas, Clostridium, Enterococcus, and Bifidobacterium at the genus level were comparatively higher in the PANI-based anode.

Rhodococcus strains as a good biotool for neutralizing pharmaceutical pollutants and obtaining therapeutically valuable products: Through the past into the future

Active pharmaceutical ingredients present a substantial risk when they reach the environment and drinking water sources. As a new type of dangerous pollutants with high chemical resistance and pronounced biological effects, they accumulate everywhere, often in significant concentrations (μg/L) in ecological environments, food chains, organs of farm animals and humans, and cause an intense response from the aquatic and soil microbiota. Rhodococcus spp. (Actinomycetia class), which occupy a dominant position in polluted ecosystems, stand out among other microorganisms with the greatest variety of degradable pollutants and participate in natural attenuation, are considered as active agents with high transforming and degrading impacts on pharmaceutical compounds. Many representatives of rhodococci are promising as unique sources of specific transforming enzymes, quorum quenching tools, natural products and novel antimicrobials, biosurfactants and nanostructures. The review presents the latest knowledge and current trends regarding the use of Rhodococcus spp. in the processes of pharmaceutical pollutants’ biodegradation, as well as in the fields of biocatalysis and biotechnology for the production of targeted pharmaceutical products. The current literature sources presented in the review can be helpful in future research programs aimed at promoting Rhodococcus spp. as potential biodegraders and biotransformers to control pharmaceutical pollution in the environment.

A simulation of acetate consumption and electricity generation in a single microbial fuel cell considering the diversity of nonelectrogenic bacteria

To simulate acetate consumption and electricity generation in a cycle of a microbial fuel cell (MFC) treating synthetic acetate-based wastewater with low concentration, nonelectrogenic bacteria (NEB), which had no contribution in electricity generation, was incorporated with methanogen's kinetic parameters into a previous biofilm model proposed by Marcus et al. (Biotechnol Bioeng 98:1171-1182, 2007). However, the Coulombic efficiency was estimated to be 40.1%, whereas the experiment showed 13.6%, as the presence of NEB was obviously underestimated. Thus, the maximum NEB reaction rate (q_maxC) was temporarily calibrated, and a sensitivity analysis was then conducted. As a result, the growth parameters of NEB, the growth of the exoelectrogenic bacteria, and the biofilm detachment were identified as influential parameters. q_maxC and a half rate constant of NEB (K_sC) were selected as potential calibration parameters. The two sets of calibrated parameters (0.342 mmol-acetate (Ac)/mg-volatile solids (VS)/d of q_maxC and 33.8 mg-carbon (C)/L of K_sC; 0.274 mmol-Ac/mg-VS/d of q_maxC and 16.9 mg-C/L of K_sC) showed a good agreement with the experimental results at 100 mg-C/L of initial acetate. However, the calibrated parameter values obviously differed from those in previous models. The calibrated model also showed good agreement with the experimental results at 50 and 200 mg-C/L of the initial acetate. In view of the different values of q_maxC and K_sC from those of methanogenic bacteria in previous models and the previous findings on anode microbial community, which showed that NEB are not only methanogenic bacteria, we concluded that the diversity of NEB should be considered to simulate performances in a cycle of MFC treating low organic matter concentrations.

Dynamics of a Bacterial Community in the Anode and Cathode of Microbial Fuel Cells under Sulfadiazine Pressure

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) could achieve the removal of antibiotics and generate power in the meantime, a process in which the bacterial community structure played a key role. Previous work has mainly focused on microbes in the anode, while their role in the cathode was seldomly mentioned. Thus, this study explored the bacterial community of both electrodes in MFCs under sulfadiazine (SDZ) pressure. The results showed that the addition of SDZ had a limited effect on the electrochemical performance, and the maximum output voltage was kept at 0.55 V. As the most abundant phylum, Proteobacteria played an important role in both the anode and cathode. Among them, Geobacter (40.30%) worked for power generation, while Xanthobacter (11.11%), Bradyrhizobium (9.04%), and Achromobacter (7.30%) functioned in SDZ removal. Actinobacteria mainly clustered in the cathode, in which Microbacterium (9.85%) was responsible for SDZ removal. Bacteroidetes, associated with the degradation of SDZ, showed no significant difference between the anode and cathode. Cathodic and part of anodic bacteria could remove SDZ efficiently in MFCs through synergistic interactions and produce metabolites for exoelectrogenic bacteria. The potential hosts of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) presented mainly at the anode, while cathodic bacteria might be responsible for ARGs reduction. This work elucidated the role of microorganisms and their synergistic interaction in MFCs and provided a reference to generate power and remove antibiotics using MFCs.

Investigation of the optimum conditions for electricity generation by haloalkaliphilic archaeon Natrialba sp. GHMN55 using the Plackett-Burman design: single and stacked MFCs

The production of bioelectricity via the anaerobic oxidation of organic matter by microorganisms is recently receiving much interest and is considered one of the future alternative technologies. In this study, we aimed to produce electrical current by using facultative halophilic archaeon Natrialba sp. GHMN55 as a biocatalyst at the anode of a microbial fuel cell (MFC) to generate electrons from the anaerobic breakdown of organic matter to produce electrical current. Since the MFC’s performance can be affected by many factors, the Plackett–Burman experimental design was applied to optimize the interaction between these factors when tested together and to identify the most significant factors that influence bioelectricity generation. We found that the factors that significantly affected electrical current generation were casein, inoculum age, magnet-bounded electrodes, NaCl, resistor value, and inoculum size; however, the existence of a mediator and the pH showed negative effects on bioelectricity production, where the maximum value of the 200 mV voltage was achieved after 48 h. The optimum medium formulation obtained using this design led to a decrease in the time required to produce bioelectricity from 20 days (in the basal medium) to 2 days (in the optimized medium). Also, the overall behavior of the cell could be enhanced by using multiple stacked MFCs with different electrical configurations (such as series or parallel chambers) to obtain higher voltages or power densities than the single chambers where the series chambers were recorded at 27.5 mV after 48 h of incubation compared with 12.6 mV and 1.1 mV for parallel and single chambers, respectively. These results indicate that the order of preferred MFC designs regarding total power densities would be series > parallel > single.

Hydrogen Production in Microbial Electrolysis Cells Based on Bacterial Anodes Encapsulated in a Small Bioreactor Platform

Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) are an emerging technology capable of harvesting part of the potential chemical energy in organic compounds while producing hydrogen. One of the main obstacles in MECs is the bacterial anode, which usually contains mixed cultures. Non-exoelectrogens can act as a physical barrier by settling on the anode surface and displacing the exoelectrogenic microorganisms. Those non-exoelectrogens can also compete with the exoelectrogenic microorganisms for nutrients and reduce hydrogen production. In addition, the bacterial anode needs to withstand the shear and friction forces existing in domestic wastewater plants. In this study, a bacterial anode was encapsulated by a microfiltration membrane. The novel encapsulation technology is based on a small bioreactor platform (SBP) recently developed for achieving successful bioaugmentation in wastewater treatment plants. The 3D capsule (2.5 cm in length, 0.8 cm in diameter) physically separates the exoelectrogenic biofilm on the carbon cloth anode material from the natural microorganisms in the wastewater, while enabling the diffusion of nutrients through the capsule membrane. MECs based on the SBP anode (MEC-SBPs) and the MECs based on a nonencapsulated anode (MEC control) were fed with Geobacter medium supplied with acetate for 32 days, and then with artificial wastewater for another 46 days. The electrochemical activity, chemical oxygen demand (COD), bacterial anode viability and relative distribution on the MEC-SBP anode were compared with the MEC control. When the MECs were fed with artificial wastewater, the MEC-SBP produced (at −0.6 V) 1.70 ± 0.22 A m⁻², twice that of the MEC control. The hydrogen evolution rates were 0.017 and 0.005 m³ m⁻³ day⁻¹, respectively. The COD consumption rate for both was about the same at 650 ± 70 mg L⁻¹. We assume that developing the encapsulated bacterial anode using the SBP technology will help overcome the problem of contamination by non-exoelectrogenic bacteria, as well as the shear and friction forces in wastewater plants.

Lysozyme regulates the extracellular polymer of activated sludge and promotes the formation of electroactive biofilm

The formation of electroactive biofilm from activated sludge on electrode surface is a key step to construct a bio-electrochemical system, yet it is greatly limited by the poor affinity between the bacteria and the electrode interface. Herein, we report a new method to promote the formation of electroactive biofilm by regulating the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) content in activated sludge with lysozyme. The investigation of the effect of lysozyme treatment on the content of extracellular polymers and the biofilm formation of electroactive bacteria suggests that lysozyme can improve the permeability of the positive bacterial cell membrane and thus increase the EPS content in the activated sludge. The characterizations of electrochemical activity, surface morphology and community structure of the anode biofilm indicate that increasing EPS content promotes the adhesion of the mixed bacteria in the activated sludge on the electrode and results in denser biofilms with better conductivities. The microbial fuel cell (MFC) inoculated with the sludge of high EPS content exhibits the power density up to 2.195 W/m², much higher than that inoculated with the untreated sludge (1.545 W/m²). The strategy of adjusting EPS content in activated sludge with a biological enzyme can effectively enhance the ability of the bacterial community to form biofilms and exhibits great application potentials in the construction of high efficiency bio-electrochemical systems.

Enhancing quorum sensing in biofilm anode to improve biosensing of naphthenic acids

The feasibility of enhancing quorum sensing (QS) in anode biofilm to improve the quantifications of commercial naphthenic acid concentrations (9.4-94 mg/L) in a microbial electrochemical cell (MXC) based biosensor was demonstrated in this study. First, three calibration methods were systematically compared, and the charging-discharging operation was selected for further experiments due to its 71-227 folds higher electrical signal outputs than the continuous closed-circuit operation and cyclic voltammetry modes. Then, the addition of acylase (5 μg/L) as an exogenous QS autoinducer (acylase) was investigated, which further improved the biosensor's electrical signal output by ∼70%, as compared to the control (without acylase). The addition of acylase increased the relative expression of QS-associated genes (lasR, lasI, rhlR, rhlI, lasA, and luxR) by 7-100%, along with increased abundances of known electroactive bacterial genera, such as Geobacter (from 42% to 47%) and Desulfovibrio (from 6% to 11%). Furthermore, toxicities of different NAs concentrations measured with the Microtox bioassay test were correlated with corresponding electrical signals, indicating that MXC-biosensor can provide a dual platform for rapid assessment of both NA concentrations and NA-associated toxicity.

"Electroactive biofilms: how microbial electron transfer enables bioelectrochemical applications"

Microbial biofilms are ubiquitous. In marine and freshwater ecosystems, microbe–mineral interactions sustain biogeochemical cycles, while biofilms found on plants and animals can range from pathogens to commensals. Moreover, biofouling and biocorrosion represent significant challenges to industry. Bioprocessing is an opportunity to take advantage of biofilms and harness their utility as a chassis for biocommodity production. Electrochemical bioreactors have numerous potential applications, including wastewater treatment and commodity production. The literature examining these applications has demonstrated that the cell–surface interface is vital to facilitating these processes. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the state of knowledge regarding biofilms’ role in bioprocessing. This mini-review discusses bacterial biofilm formation, cell–surface redox interactions, and the role of microbial electron transfer in bioprocesses. It also highlights some current goals and challenges with respect to microbe-mediated bioprocessing and future perspectives.

Sustainable bioelectricity generation using Cladophora sp. as a biocathode in membrane-less microbial fuel cell

In this study, the Cladophora sp. is used to provide oxygen to the cathode of the photosynthetic biocathode membrane-less microbial fuel cell (PB-MLMFC). Non-aerated (NA-MLMFC) and mechanically-aerated (MA-MLMFC) MLMFCs are operated under similar operating conditions to evaluate the performance of PB-MLMFC with the presence of Cladophora sp. The PB-MLMFC exhibits the highest dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration, which results in a more efficient oxygen reduction reaction and a significant improvement in the electricity generation performance. The maximum power density of PB-MLMFC is 619.1 mW m^-2, which is the highest power density known to be reported for algal cathode MFCs in the literature. The electrochemical analysis shows that theCladophora sp.reduces the charge (R_ct) and mass transfer (R_mt) resistances of the PB-MLMFC, and improves the bioelectrochemical activity of the anode microorganisms. The study reveals that Cladophora sp. provides a cost-effective and renewable approach for practical applications of MLMFCs.

Quorum quenching strategy for biofouling control in membrane photobioreactor

This study aims to reduce membrane fouling in membrane photobioreactor (MPBR) through the quorum quenching (QQ) strategy. For this purpose, the QQ beads (immobilized Rhodococcus sp. BH4) were added to the MPBR, and antifouling ability was evaluated in consideration of the changes in transmembrane pressure (TMP), extracellular polymeric substance (EPS), microbial community, and cake layer morphology on the membrane surface. The results showed that the TMP of control MPBR (MPBR-C) reached 818 mbar and 912 mbar on the operation hours of 35 and 170, while the TMP of experimental MPBR (MPBR-QQ) was only 448 mbar and 676 mbar, respectively. The QQ strategy effectively reduced the EPS content in MPBR. The microscopic observations indicated that the QQ diminished the cake layer formation and pore-blocking on the membrane surface. Comparisons of 16S and 18S gene communities revealed minor differences between bacterial and eukaryotic species in MPBRs at phylum and class levels.

Bacterial signalling mechanism: An innovative microbial intervention with multifaceted applications in microbial electrochemical technologies: A review

Microbial electrochemical technologies (METs) are a set of inventive tools that generate value-added by-products with concomitant wastewater remediation. However, due to the bottlenecks, like higher fabrication cost and inferior yield of resources, these inventive METs are still devoid of successful field-scale implementation. In this regard, application of quorum sensing (QS) mechanism to improve the power generation of the METs has gained adequate attention. The QS is an intercellular signalling mechanism that controls the bacterial social network in its vicinity via the synthesis of diffusible signal molecules labelled as auto inducers, thus ameliorating yield of valuables produced through METs. This state-of-the-art review elucidates different types of QS molecules and their working mechanism with the special focus on the widespread application of QS in the field of METs for their performance enhancement. Thus, this review intends to guide the researchers in rendering scalability to METs by integrating innovative QS mechanisms into them.
