Persistence and vertical distribution of neonicotinoids in soils under different citrus orchards chrono sequences from southern China

Neonicotinoid insecticides in well-developed agricultural cultivation areas: Seawater occurrence, spatial-seasonal variability and ecological risks

Neonicotinoids (NEOs) are widely used insecticides and have been detected in aquatic environments globally. However, little is known about NEOs contamination in the coastal environments under the terrestrial pressure of multiple planting types simultaneously. This study investigated the occurrence, spatial-seasonal variability, and ecological risks of NEOs along the coast of the Shandong Peninsula during the dry and wet seasons, where located many largest fruit, vegetable, and grain production bases in China. The concentrations of ∑NEOs in seawater were higher in wet seasons (surface: 195.46 ng/L; bottom: 14.56 ng/L) than in dry seasons (surface: 10.07 ng/L; bottom: 8.45 ng/L). During the wet seasons, NEOs peaked in the northern and eastern areas of the Shandong Peninsula, where the inland fruit planting area is located. While dry seasons had higher concentrations in Laizhou Bay, influenced by rivers from vegetable-growing areas. Grain crops, fruit, and cotton planting were major NEOs sources during wet seasons, while wheat and vegetables dominated in dry seasons. Moderate or above ecological risks appeared at 53.8% of the monitoring sites. Generally, NEOs caused high risks in the wet seasons mainly caused by Imidacloprid, and medium risk in the dry seasons caused by Clothianidin, which should be prevented and controlled in advance.

Effects of neonicotinoid residues on non-target soil animals: A case study of meta-analysis

Neonicotinoids (NEOs) are currently the fastest-growing and most widely used insecticide class worldwide. Increasing evidence suggests that long-term NEO residues in the environment have toxic effects on non-target soil animals. However, few studies have conducted surveys on the effects of NEOs on soil animals, and only few have focused on global systematic reviews or meta-analysis to quantify the effects of NEOs on soil animals. Here, we present a meta-analysis of 2940 observations from 113 field and laboratory studies that investigated the effects of NEOs (at concentrations of 0.001-78,600.000 mg/kg) on different soil animals across five indicators (i.e., survival, growth, behavior, reproduction, and biochemical biomarkers). Furthermore, we quantify the effects of NEOs on different species of soil animals. Results show that NEOs inhibit the survival, growth rate, behavior, and reproduction of soil animals, and alter biochemical biomarkers. Both the survival rate and longevity of individuals decreased by 100 % with NEO residues. The mean values of juvenile survival, cocoon number, and egg hatchability were reduced by 97 %, 100 %, and 84 %, respectively. Both individual and cocoon weights were reduced by 82 %, while the growth rate decreased by 88 % with NEO residues. Our meta-analysis confirms that NEOs pose significant negative impacts on soil animals.

Effects of farmland abandonment on anthropogenic-alluvial soil microbiota and contaminant residues in Lycium barbarum fields

AIMS

There has been an increasing tendency to abandon crop cultivation and farming in old Lycium barbarum (wolfberry) stands to allow for natural restoration. However, little research has been dedicated to deciphering how soil quality changes in L. barbarum fields following abandonment from a physicochemical and microbiological perspective. Here we assessed the effects of farmland abandonment on anthropogenic-alluvial soil microbiota and contaminant residues in L. barbarum fields in Ningxia, China.

METHODS AND RESULTS

Soil microbiota, heavy metal, and neonicotinoid pesticide profiles in L. barbarum fields abandoned for one to four years were characterized. Microbial community analysis was performed by high-throughput sequencing of the bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA genes and the fungal nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region. Soil bacterial diversity increased from before abandonment to year three after abandonment, and fungal diversity peaked in year one after abandonment. Enrichment of potentially beneficial taxa (e.g. Limnobacter, Cavicella) as well as pathogenic taxa (e.g. Ilyonectria) was observed in the abandoned field soils, along with depletion of other taxa (e.g. Planococcus, Bipolaris). Soil copper, zinc, cadmium, imidacloprid, and acetamiprid concentrations all decreased with increasing time since abandonment and had varied correlations with soil quality, microbial diversity, and the relative abundances of major phyla. Soil available phosphorus, nitrate-nitrogen, and pH were the key factors shaping bacterial communities. The structuring of fungal communities was strongly influenced by soil pH, available phosphorus, and available nitrogen contents.

CONCLUSIONS

There were positive consequences of farmland abandonment in L. barbarum fields, such as optimized microbial community structure, reduced heavy metal accumulation, and enhanced pesticide degradation.

Comparative toxicity of two neonicotinoid insecticides at environmentally relevant concentrations to telecoprid dung beetles

Dung beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeinae) frequently traverse agricultural matrices in search of ephemeral dung resources and spend extended periods of time burrowing in soil. Neonicotinoids are among the most heavily applied and widely detected insecticides used in conventional agriculture with formulated products designed for row crop and livestock pest suppression. Here, we determined the comparative toxicity of two neonicotinoids (imidacloprid and thiamethoxam) on dung beetles, Canthon spp., under two exposure profiles: direct topical application (acute) and sustained contact with treated-soil (chronic). Imidacloprid was significantly more toxic than thiamethoxam under each exposure scenario. Topical application LD50 values (95% CI) for imidacloprid and thiamethoxam were 19.1 (14.5-25.3) and 378.9 (200.3-716.5) ng/beetle, respectively. After the 10-day soil exposure, the measured percent mortality in the 3 and 9 µg/kg nominal imidacloprid treatments was 35 ± 7% and 39 ± 6%, respectively. Observed mortality in the 9 µg/kg imidacloprid treatment was significantly greater than the control (p = 0.04); however, the 3 µg/kg imidacloprid dose response may be biologically relevant (p = 0.07). Thiamethoxam treatments had similar mortality as the controls (p > 0.8). Environmentally relevant concentrations of imidacloprid measured in airborne particulate matter and non-target soils pose a potential risk to coprophagous scarabs.

Effects of thiacloprid exposure on microbiota-gut-liver axis: Multiomics mechanistic analysis in Japanese quails

Neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) are the most widely used class of pesticides globally. However, NNIs may cause adverse health effects, including chronic liver disease, and perturbation of the gut microbiota. Thiacloprid (THI) is one of the NNIs widely used in agriculture. Therefore, it is essential to elucidate effects of THI on the microbiota-gut-liver axis to assess the risk of chronic liver disease following exposure to NNIs. This study aimed at investigating whether THI exposure promoted liver injury by altering the gut microbiota and related metabolites. In this study, healthy male quails were exposed to 2 or 4 mg/kg THI or 0.75 % (w/v) saline once daily for 6 weeks, respectively. Metabolomics, 16S rRNA sequencing, and transcriptomic methods were performed to analyze the toxic mechanisms of THI in Japanese quails. We found that THI evoked damage and disruption to intestinal barrier function, leading to increased harmful substances such as lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and phenylacetic acid entering the liver. Besides, our results showed significantly altered hepatic bile acid and cholesterol metabolism in THI-exposed quails, with abnormal liver lipid metabolism, showing severe liver injury, fibrosis, and steatosis compared with the control quails. In conclusion, THI exposure aggravates liver injury via microbiota-gut-liver axis.

Distribution of pesticide residues in agricultural topsoil of the Huangshui catchment, Qinghai Tibet Plateau

This study presents monitoring data on the spatial distribution and occurrence of pesticide residues of cultivated soil in the Huangshui catchment in the northeastern part of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau. We also provide factors that influence the distribution of pesticides, such as the properties of pesticides and soil and crop types. A total of 110 soil samples were collected in early April 2021, and 49 pesticides were analyzed. Only 3.6% of the samples contained no pesticide residues (concentrations < limit of quantitation or not detected [ND]), and the total pesticide concentration ranged from ND to 0.925 mg/kg. Most commonly, two to five pesticides were found in the soil samples (> 70.9%), and up to 10 pesticide residues were present in some samples. A total of 85 different pesticide combinations were observed in all the soil samples. Chlorpyrifos and difenoconazole were the dominant compounds. The levels of pesticide residues were mainly driven by their half-life values. Bulk density, along with soil water content and pH, also affected the retention of pesticides in the soil. The crop type played no role in the distribution of pesticides.

Long-Term Effects of Imidacloprid, Thiacloprid, and Clothianidin on the Growth and Development of Eisenia andrei

Recently, the high toxicity of neonicotinoids to the survival and reproduction of adult earthworms has become apparent in standard 56-day toxicity tests. The persistence of some neonicotinoids and/or their repeated application may lead to long-term exposure, possibly also affecting other parts of the life cycle of earthworms. The present study aimed at providing insight into the sublethal effects of imidacloprid, thiacloprid, and clothianidin on juvenile Eisenia andrei exposed for 16 weeks in Lufa 2.2 soil. Significant effects on growth and maturation were observed for all compounds. Exposure to 0.125 mg imidacloprid/kg dry soil and 0.03125 and 0.0625 mg thiacloprid/kg dry soil significantly affected the growth of the earthworms, while significant maturation effects were observed at 0.03125 mg/kg dry soil for imidacloprid and thiacloprid and 0.25 mg clothianidin/kg dry soil. The 16-week no-observed-effect concentrations (NOECs) found in the present study were lower than previously reported NOECs for effects on earthworm reproduction. Predicted environmental concentrations after a single application exceeded the observed NOECs for effects on earthworm maturation in the case of imidacloprid and thiacloprid and for effects on earthworm growth in the case of thiacloprid and clothianidin. Environ Toxicol Chem 2022;41:1686-1695. © 2022 The Authors.
