Microbial activity enhancement in constructed wetlands operated as bioelectrochemical systems

Are integrated bioelectrochemical technologies feasible for wastewater management?

The need for sustainable technological solutions for wastewater management at different scales has led to the emergence of several promising integrated bioelectrochemical technologies in the past decade. A thorough assessment of these technologies is imperative to understand their practical implementation feasibility and to identify the key challenges to prioritise the research and development work. Our multicriteria-based assessment reveals that the integrated technologies are efficient for wastewater treatment in terms of normalised land footprint [(0.31-1.39 m²/population equivalent (PE))] - and energy consumption (0.18-1.49 kWH/m³) as compared to the conventional biotechnologies, and suggests that they have potential for real-world application. Specifying the boundaries according to their treatment capabilities and scale-up potential besides niche application sites or geographical locations is required to expedite their transition to the real-world wastewater management sector.

Fate and toxicity of triclosan in tidal flow constructed wetlands amended with cow dung biochar

Triclosan (TC) is one of the threats to the environment due to its bioaccumulative nature, persistency, combined toxicity in aquatic biota, and endocrine-disrupting nature. This study revealed the removal of TC via three distinct setups of vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCW: B-VFCW (with biochar); PB-VFCW (with plant Colocasia and biochar); C-VFCW (without biochar but with plant)) operated with normal flow and tidal-flow (flooding/drying cycles of 72 h/24 h: B-TFCW; PB-TFCW; C-TFCW) mode for 216 h of the operation cycle. The effluent was analyzed for changes in TC load and wastewater parameters (COD, NO₃-N, NH₄⁺-N, and DO). TC reduction efficiency (%) was found to be higher in PB-TFCW (98.41) followed by, C-TFCW (82.41), B-TFCW (77.51), PB-VFCW (71.83), C-VFCW (64.25), and B-VFCW (52.19) (p < 0.001). Reduction efficiency for COD (29-75 - 53.10%), and NH₄⁺-N (86.5-97.9%) was better in TFCWs than that of setups with a normal mode of operation. TFCWs showed higher DO (3.87-4.89 mg L^-1) during the operation period than that of VFCWs. The toxic impact of TC in plant stand was also assessed and results suggested low phototoxic and oxidative enzyme activities (catalase, CAT; superoxide dismutase, SOD; hydrogen peroxide, H₂O₂; malondialdehyde, MDA) in TFCWs. In summary, biochar addition and tidal flow operation played a significant role in oxidative- and microbial-mediated removals of TC in wastewater. This study provides an alternative strategy for the efficient removals of TC in constructed wetland systems and new insights into the toxic impact of pharmaceuticals on wetland plants.

Ammonia/ammonium removal/recovery from wastewaters using bioelectrochemical systems (BES): A review

This review updates the current research efforts on using BES to recover NH₃/NH₄⁺, highlighting the novel configurations and introducing the working principles and the applications of microbial fuel cell (MFC), microbial electrolysis cell (MEC), microbial desalination cell (MDC), and microbial electrosynthesis cell (MESC) for NH₃/NH₄⁺ removal/recovery. However, commonly studied BES processes for NH₃/NH₄⁺ removal/recovery are energy intensive with external aeration needed for NH₃ stripping being the largest energy input. In such a process bipolar membranes used for yielding a local alkaline pool recovering NH₃ is not cost-effective. This gives a chance to microbial electrosynthesis which turned out to be a potential alternative option to approach circular bioeconomy. Furtherly, the reactor volume and NH₃/NH₄⁺ removal/recovery efficiency has a weakly positive correlation, indicating that there might be other factors controlling the reactor performance that are yet to be investigated.

Exploring the Removal of Organic Matter in Constructed Wetlands Using First Order Kinetic Models

Mathematical models have become an excellent tool to evaluate the characteristics and performance of Constructed Wetlands (CWs). They help to characterize the dynamics of pollutant removal in these systems. The aim of this research was to evaluate the kinetics of organic matter removal in CWs using two models: (i) the conventional first order model and (ii) the sigmoidal or k-n model. For this purpose, data from 41 CWs where domestic sewage is treated were used. The cluster analysis was performed to identify similar groups of CWs based on the estimation of model coefficients. According to the results obtained, the model that provides a better fit for the removal of organic matter in CWs is the sigmoidal-type. However, its “n” coefficient, which would represent an increase in resistance to degradation, remains a not totally explained variable. The sigmoidal or k-n model is promising, presenting good adjustment indices.
