Dual role of dissolved black carbon in sensitized ofloxacin photooxidation: Mechanism and influential factors

Dissolved black carbon (DBC) is the more photoactive component of dissolved organic matter (DOM) pool, which plays a dual role in the photoconversion of aquatic contaminants, acting as both a photosensitizer and an inhibitor. However, little is known about the more systematic mechanism by which DBC exhibits a dual effect, which is closely related to the structure composition of DBC. In this study, the differences in characteristics of DBC obtained from 300 °C and 500 °C were compared via UV-vis absorption spectrum, Fluorescence excitation emission matrix spectra (3D-EEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and evaluated the promoting and inhibiting effects of DBC on ofloxacin (OFL) photodegradation. It was found that higher pyrolysis temperature reduced the UV absorbance, molecular weight, aromaticity, and phenolics of DBC while increasing the content of quinone/aromatic ketone and humic substances. Photochemical data showed that 3DBC*, 1O2 and ·OH were all participated in the DBC-mediated OFL photodegradation. Wherein, DBC300 (DBCT, where T = pyrolysis temperature) had strong light screening and dynamic quenching effect, but the formation ability of 3DBC*, 1O2 and ·OH was poor, which significantly retarded the photodegradation of OFL. While DBC500 exhibited a slight promotion effect due to its higher formation ability of reactive species and weak light screening effect. Moreover, DBC500 had higher steady-state concentration and (kOFL,3DBC⁎) than DBC300, which might be due to the higher contents of quinone/aromatic ketone and the lower contents of phenol in DBC500, thus enhancing the reactivity of 3DBC* and OFL. Our research systematically revealed the trade-off mechanism of DBC on the photodegradation of fluoroquinolones, and provided an important theoretical guidance for the photodegradation of fluoroquinolones under the evolution of DBC composition.

From Bulk to Nano: Formation, Features, and Functions of Nano-Black Carbon in Biogeochemical Processes

Globally increasing wildfires and widespread applications of biochar have led to a growing amount of black carbon (BC) entering terrestrial ecosystems. The significance of BC in carbon sequestration, environmental remediation, and the agricultural industry has long been recognized. However, the formation, features, and environmental functions of nanosized BC, which is one of the most active fractions in the BC continuum during global climate change, are poorly understood. This review highlights the formation, surface reactivity (sorption, redox, and heteroaggregation), biotic, and abiotic transformations of nano-BC, and its major differences compared to other fractions of BC and engineered carbon nanomaterials. Potential applications of nano-BC including suspending agent, soil amendment, and nanofertilizer are elucidated based on its unique properties and functions. Future studies are suggested to develop more reliable detection techniques to provide multidimensional information on nano-BC in environmental samples, explore the critical role of nano-BC in promoting soil and planetary health from a one health perspective, and extend the multifield applications of nano-BC with a lower environmental footprint but higher efficiency.

Biochar improved the solubility of triclocarban in aqueous environment: Insight into the role of biochar-derived dissolved organic carbon

Biochar as an effective adsorbent can be used for the removal of triclocarban from wastewater. Biochar-derived dissolved organic carbon (BC-DOC) is an important carbonaceous component of biochar, nonetheless, its role in the interaction between biochar and triclocarban remains little known. Hence, in this study, sixteen biochars derived from pine sawdust and corn straw with different physico-chemical properties were produced in nitrogen-flow and air-limited atmospheres at 300-750 °C, and investigated the effect of BC-DOC on the interaction between biochar and triclocarban. Biochar of 600∼750 °C with low polarity, high aromaticity, and high porosity presented an adsorption effect on triclocarban owing to less BC-DOC release as well as the strong π-π, hydrophobic, and pore filling interactions between biochar and triclocarban. In contrast and intriguingly, biochar of 300∼450 °C with low aromaticity and high polarity exhibited a significant solubilization effect rather than adsorption effect on triclocarban in aqueous solution. The maximum solubilization content of triclocarban in biochar-added solution reached approximately 3 times its solubility in biochar-free solution. This is mainly because the solubilization effect of BC-DOC surpassed the adsorption effect of biochar though the BC-DOC only accounted for 0.01-1.5 % of bulk biochar mass. Furthermore, the high solubilization content of triclocarban induced by biochar was dependent on the properties of BC-DOC as well as the increasing BC-DOC content. BC-DOC with higher aromaticity, larger molecular size, higher polarity, and more humic-like matters had a greater promoting effect on the water-solubility of triclocarban. This study highlights that biochar may promote the solubility of some organic pollutants (e.g., triclocarban) in aqueous environment and enhance their potential risk.

Structural characteristics of dissolved black carbon and its interactions with organic and inorganic contaminants: A critical review

Biochar (BC) is a sustainable and renewable carbonaceous material, and its soluble component, dissolved black carbon (DBC), is the key to understanding BC's geological and environmental processes. Although the relationship between the changes in DBC structure and its properties, functions, and associated environmental risks has been explored, a gap remains in our understanding of DBC's fate and behavior in the natural environment. Thus, in this review, we have highlighted the molecular and chemical compositions and the structural evolution of DBC during pyrolysis, the influence of DBC's physicochemical properties on its fate and transport, DBC's interaction with soil and its contaminants, and DBC stability in soil and water environments along with potential risks. Based on our in-depth assessment of DBC and its biogeochemical roles, we believe that future studies should focus on the following: (1) using advanced techniques to understand the chemical and molecular structure of DBC deeply and concisely and, thus, determine its fundamental role in the natural environment; (2) investigating the multi-functional properties of DBC and its interaction mechanisms; and (3) evaluating the environmental behaviors of and risks associated with DBC after BC application. In future, it is necessary to gain a deeper insight into the fate and transport of DBC with contaminants and study its associated risks under BC application in the environment.

Temperature-Dependent Molecular Evolution of Biochar-Derived Dissolved Black Carbon and Its Interaction Mechanism with Polyvinyl Chloride Microplastics

Biochar-derived dissolved black carbon (DBC) molecules are dependent on the BC formation temperature and affect the fate of emerging contaminants in waters, such as polyvinyl chloride microplastic (MP_PVC). However, the temperature-dependent evolution and MP_PVC-interaction of DBC molecules remain unclear. Herein, we propose a novel DBC-MP_PVC interaction mechanism by systematically interpreting heterogeneous correlations, sequential responses, and synergistic relationships of thousands of molecules and their linking functional groups. Two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy was proposed to combine Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry and spectroscopic datasets. Increased temperature caused diverse DBC molecules and fluorophores, accompanied by molecular transformation from saturation/reduction to unsaturation/oxidation with high carbon oxidation states, especially for molecules with acidic functional groups. The temperature response of DBC molecules detected via negative-/positive-ion electrospray ionization sequentially occurred in unsaturated hydrocarbons → lignin-like → condensed aromatic → lipid-/aliphatic-/peptide-like → tannin-like → carbohydrate-like molecules. DBC molecular changes induced by temperature and MP_PVC interaction were closely coordinated, with lignin-like molecules contributing the most to the interaction. Functional groups in DBC molecules with m/z < 500 showed a sequential MP_PVC-interaction response of phenol/aromatic ether C-O, alkene C═C/amide C═O → polysaccharides C-O → alcohol/ether/carbohydrate C-O groups. These findings help to elucidate the critical role of DBCs in MP environmental behaviors.

Novel insights into the temporal molecular fractionation of dissolved black carbon at the iron oxyhydroxide - water interface

As the most reactive and mobile fraction of black carbon, dissolved black carbon (DBC) inexorably interacts with minerals in the biosphere. Nevertheless, the research on the mechanisms and compositions of DBC assembly at the mineral-water interface remains limited. In this study, we revealed the "kinetic architecture" of DBC on iron oxyhydroxide at novel insights based on quantitative and qualitative approaches. The results indicated that high molecular weight, highly unsaturated, oxygen-rich (such as carboxyl-rich fraction, phenolics), aliphatics, and long C chains compounds were preferentially adsorbed on the iron oxyhydroxide. 2D-COS analyses directly disclosed the sequential fractionation: aromatic and phenolic groups > aliphatic groups, and few aromatics were continuously adsorbed after the rapid adsorption. Quantitative determinations identified that aromatic and phenolic components were adsorbed rapidly over the first 60 min, while aromatics achieved the dynamic equilibrium until ∼300 min, which was consistent with the 2D-COS observations. Our findings supported the hypothesis that "mineral-OM" and "OM-OM" interactions worked simultaneously, and the adsorption might be co-driven by ligand exchange, hydrophobic interactions, and other mechanisms. This work provided the theoretical basis for organic carbon storage and turnover, and it was valuable for predicting the behaviors and fates of contaminants at the soil-water interface and surface water.

Embedding of biochar in soil mineral fractions: Evidence from benzene polycarboxylic acids molecular biomarkers

Investigators are debating on the positive and negative priming effects of biochar on native soil organic carbon (SOC), which is largely attributed to the technical barrier of identifying biochar contribution to the apparently measured SOC or mineralized CO₂. We combined benzene polycarboxylic acids (BPCAs) molecular biomarkers and soil particle density fractionation to identify biochar contributions to the carbon content in three representative allitic soils in Yunnan. The soil-biochar mixture was incubated for one-month to avoid significant biodegradation of biochar. The results showed that BPCAs were mainly distributed in free light fractions (fLF) up to 87 % of the total BPCAs contents after one month incubation. Recognition of BPCAs in occluded light fractions (oLF) and heavy fractions (HF) suggested a significant interaction between biochar and soil mineral particles. In addition, the percentage of B6CA is comparable or even higher in HF than in fLF or oLF. Thus, biochar-mineral interactions may be an additional stabilization mechanism besides the condensed aromatic structures in biochar. The apparently measured carbon contents increased after biochar application, and both positive and negative priming effects to native SOC were observed after deducting biochar contents based an accurate calculation from BPCAs. The most native SOC depletion (positive priming effects) was noted for the soil with the most favored biochar embedding in soil mineral compositions. This study emphasized that combining BPCAs molecular biomarkers and soil particle density fractionation could accurately quantify different carbon pools, and thus facilitate a comprehensive understanding on the stabilization and turnover of biochar in soils.
