Acceleration of biotic decolorization and partial mineralization of methyl orange by a photo-assisted n-type semiconductor

The acceleration on decolorization of azo dyes by magnetic lignin-based materials via enhancing the extracellular electron transfer

Two novel and eco-friendly redox mediators (RMs), magnetic oxidative vanillin (MOV) and magnetic oxidative syringaldehyde (MOS), both derived from lignin, were prepared to improve the decolorization of the methyl orange (MO) dye. The Decolorization Efficiency (DE) of MO in the batch experiments with MOV and MOS were increased by more than 60% and 22%, respectively, when compared to the control experiment without magnetic RMs. Moreover, the two magnetic RMs could maintain stable DE of MO in sequenced batch reactors (SBRs), and negligible leaching of the oxidized lignin monomers was observed under various environmental conditions. Density Function Theory (DFT) calculations were used to propose three potential biodegradation mechanisms for azo dyes, and the key intermediates were confirmed using high-performance liquid chromatography. This study proposed a feasible strategy for functional utilization of lignin resource, as well as a practical method for effectively treating azo dye-containing wastewater.

Microwave-Assisted Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Pollutants via CNTs/TiO2

Introducing microwave fields into photocatalytic technology is a promising strategy to suppress the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers. Here, a series of microwave-absorbing photocatalysts, xCNTs/TiO2, were prepared by combining titanium dioxide (TiO2) with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using a typical alcoholic thermal method to study the promotion of microwave-generated thermal and athermal effects on the photocatalytic oxidation process. As good carriers that are capable of absorbing microwaves and conducting electrons, CNTs can form hot spots and defects under the action of the thermal effect from microwaves to capture electrons generated on the surface of TiO2 and enhance the separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons (e−) and holes (h+). Excluding the influence of the reaction temperature, the athermal effect of the microwave field had a polarizing effect on the catalyst, which improved the light absorption rate of the catalyst. Moreover, microwave radiation also promoted the activation of oxygen molecules and hydroxyl groups on the catalyst surface to generate more reactive oxygen radicals. According to the mechanism analysis, the microwave effect significantly improved the photocatalytic advanced oxidation process, which lays a solid theoretical foundation for practical application.

Historical development and prospect of intimately coupling photocatalysis and biological technology for pollutant treatment in sewage: A review

Through the synergistic effect of photocatalysis and biodegradation, intimately coupling photocatalysis and biological (ICPB) technology could improve the removal rate and mineralization rate of refractory pollutants and reduce the toxicity of intermediate products. ICPB system was characterized with the advantages of simple operation, low energy consumption and high treatment efficiency. As a new sewage treatment technology, ICPB system has shown great potential in the treatment of refractory pollutants, and has been widely concerned. In this study, the research progress of photocatalyst, carrier and biofilm in ICPB system were discussed, and the degradation mechanism was introduced. The shortcomings of the current ICPB system were pointed out, and the possible research directions of ICPB in the future were proposed. This review aimed to deepen the understanding of ICPB technology and promoted the further development of ICPB technology in the treatment of refractory pollutants.
