Ag nanoparticles anchored on NiO octahedrons (Ag/NiO composite): An efficient catalyst for reduction of nitro substituted phenols and colouring dyes

A multifunctional Ag NPs/guar gum hydrogel as versatile platform for catalysts, antibacterial agents, and construction of oil-water separation interfaces

The frequently encountered wastewater contaminations, including soluble aromatic compound and dye pollutants, pathogenic bacteria, and insoluble oils, have resulted in significant environmental and human health issues. It poses a challenge to utilize identical materials for the treatment of complex wastewater. Herein, in this research, multifunctional Ag NPs/guar gum hybrid hydrogels were fabricated using a facile in situ reduction and self-crosslinking method for efficient remediation of complex wastewater. The Ag NPs/guar gum hybrid hydrogel showed remarkable remodeling, adhesive, and self-healing characteristics, which was favorable for its versatile applications. The combination of Ag NPs with the guar gum skeleton endowed the hybrid hydrogel with exceptional catalytic activity for reducing aromatic compounds and dye pollutants, as well as remarkable antibacterial efficacy against pathogenic bacteria. In addition, the Ag NPs/guar gum hybrid hydrogel could be employed to coat a variety of substrates, including cotton fabrics and stainless steel meshes. The hydrogel coated cotton fabrics and meshes presented superhydrophilicity/underwater superoleophobicity, excellent antifouling capacity, and outstanding recyclability, which could be successfully applied for efficient separation of oil-water mixtures. The findings of this work provide a feasible and cost-effective approach for the remediation of intricate wastewater.

Z-scheme plasmonic Ag decorated Bi2WO6/NiO hybrids for enhanced photocatalytic treatment of naphthenic acids in real oil sands process water under simulated solar irradiation

A novel photocatalyst, Bi₂WO₆/NiO/Ag, with hierarchical flower-like Z-scheme heterojunction, which exhibited excellent stability and photocatalytic activity over a wide light spectrum, was firstly synthesized and used in the remediation of real oil sands process water (OSPW) and achieved complete removal of aromatics, classical naphthenic acids (NAs), and heteroatomic NAs after 6 h of photocatalytic treatment. The acute toxicity of OSPW was completely eliminated after only 2 h of treatment. h⁺ and ∙OH were found to be the major oxidative species in the photocatalytic system. The enhanced photocatalytic efficiency is the result of the unique Z-scheme electron transfer among electron mediators Ag, NiO, and Bi₂WO₆, which was supported by the in-situ irradiated XPS. The study benefits the design of engineered passive treatment approach for OSPW remediation through solar light-driven catalyst.

Cellular uptake of metal oxide-based nanocomposites and targeting of chikungunya virus replication protein nsP3

Emergence of new pathogenic viruses along with adaptive potential of RNA viruses has become a major public health concern. Therefore, it is increasingly crucial to investigate and assess the antiviral potential of nanocomposites, which is constantly advancing area of medical biology. In this study, two types of nanocomposites: Ag/NiO and Ag₂O/NiO/ZnO with varying molar ratios of silver and silver oxide, respectively have been synthesised and characterised. Three metal/metal oxide (Ag/NiO) composites having different amounts of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) anchored on NiO octahedrons are AN-5 % (5 % Ag), AN-10 % (10 % Ag) and AN-15 % (15 % Ag)) and three ternary metal oxide nanocomposites (Ag₂O/NiO/ZnO) i.e., A/N/Z-1, A/N/Z-2, and A/N/Z-3 with different molar ratios of silver oxide (10 %, 20 % and 30 %, respectively) were evaluated for their antiviral potential. Cellular uptake of nanocomposites was confirmed by ICP-MS. Intriguingly, molecular docking of metal oxides in the active site of nsP3 validated the binding of nanocomposites to chikungunya virus replication protein nsP3. In vitro antiviral potential of nanocomposites was tested by performing plaque reduction assay, cytopathic effect (CPE) analysis and qRT-PCR. The nanocomposites showed significant reduction in virus titre. Half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC₅₀) for A/N/Z-3 and AN-5 % were determined to be 2.828 and 3.277 µg/mL, respectively. CPE observation and qRT-PCR results were consistent with the data obtained from plaque reduction assay for A/N/Z-3 and AN-5 %. These results have opened new avenues for development of nanocomposites based antiviral therapies.

Elimination of toxic azo dye using a calcium alginate beads impregnated with NiO/activated carbon: Preparation, characterization and RSM optimization

Nickel oxide nanoparticles supported activated carbon (AC-NiO) was fabricated using thermal activation. Then, AC-NiO composite was immobilized on alginate beads to obtain 3-dimensional network structure ALG@AC-NiO nanocomposite beads for catalytic reduction of Congo red (CR) dye. The resulting nanocomposite beads were identified by various physical techniques. The crystalline nature and dispersion of NiO nanoparticles was defined by the XRD and EDS techniques, respectively. ALG@AC-NiO beads have a Ni element content of 4.65 wt% with an average NiO particle diameter of 23 nm. The statistical approach mathematically describes the catalytic reduction of the CR dye as a function of the NaBH₄ concentration, the catalyst dose and the concentration of the CR dye modeled by a BBD-RSM. According to the statistical modeling and the optimization process, the catalytic optimum conditions were obtained for NaBH₄ concentration of 0.05 M, catalyst dose of 11 mg and CR dye concentration of 80 ppm who permit meet 99.67 % of CR dye conversion. The adjusted coefficient of determination (R² = 0.9957) indicates that the considered model was quite suitable with a good correlation between the experiment and predicted.

Fabrication of a Tubular CuO/NiO Biomimetic Nanozyme with Synergistically Promoted Peroxidase-like Performance for Isoniazid Sensing

Isoniazid is an antibiotic primarily used in clinical treatment of tuberculosis, but excessive usage can lead to serious consequences such as hepatotoxicity, neurotoxicity, and even coma and death. Therefore, it is critical to exploit a quick, facile, and acute way for isoniazid analysis. In this work, we have demonstrated an efficient electrospinning-carbonation-wet chemistry reaction-calcination process to fabricate CuO/NiO nanotubes (NTs) as a promising nanozyme for peroxidase (POD) mimicking. In virtue of the distinct tubular structure and synergy between CuO and NiO from the mechanisms of both electron transfer and hydroxyl radical generation, a remarkably improved catalytic activity is realized for the CuO/NiO NTs compared with bare CuO and NiO samples. According to the admirable POD-like property, a rapid colorimetric detection for isoniazid is accomplished with a detection limit of 0.4 μM (S/N = 3) and favorable selectivity. In addition, the sensing capability of isoniazid in a real sample is also investigated with satisfactory results. This work offers a novel tactic to fabricate high-performance nanozymes with efficient isoniazid sensing capabilities to address challenges in disease treatment efficacy and public safety monitoring.
