A pH-dependent and charge selective covalent organic framework for removal of dyes from aqueous solutions

A novel imine-linked COF is synthesized by the condensation of 2,4,6-tris(4-aminophenyl)-1,3,5-triazine (TAPT) and 2-hydroxy-5-methoxyisophthalaldehyde (HMIPA) under solvothermal conditions. This COF adsorbs preferentially the neutral dye Neutral Red (NR) over the positively charged dye Methylene Blue (MB) at pH 7, and the negatively charged Methyl Orange (MO) over the positively charged Methylene Blue (MB) at pH 3. The maximum adsorption capacities (qe) obtained within very short times (11-60 min) under optimized conditions were 108, 185 and 429 mg.g-1 for the MB, MO, and NR dyes, respectively. These adsorptions obey the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetics. The prepared TAPT-HMIPA-COF is used successfully for the removal of the dyes from real water and treated wastewater samples. The adsorption data, BET, FTIR, and zeta potential measurements show that the electrostatic, π-π stacking and hydrogen bond interactions are responsible for the adsorption of organic dyes on the surface of the prepared COF. Due to recyclability, high capacity and efficiency for the adsorption of positive, negative and neutral organic dyes, this COF can be considered promising for simultaneous removal of various dyes from aqueous solutions at adjusted pHs.

Novel modified semi-carbonized fiber prepared using discarded clothes for derisking Cu(II) and Pb(II) contaminated water

We report a novel modified semi-carbonized fiber (CF) prepared using cotton and acrylic clothes for derisking contaminated water to realize the resource utilization of discarded clothes in wastewater treatment. In this study, amphoteric and auxiliary modifiers were used to modify CFs for preparing amphoteric and amphoteric-auxiliary CFs. The basic physicochemical properties of different modified CFs were determined, and the microscopic morphology of modified CFs was detected. The isothermal adsorption characteristics of Cu(II) and Pb(II) on different modified CFs were investigated by the batch method, and the effect mechanisms of temperature, pH, ionic strength, and material dose were compared. Physicochemical properties and microscopic morphology results proved that amphoteric and auxiliary modifiers were modified on the CF surface and changed the surface properties of CF. The adsorption capacities of Cu(II) and Pb(II) on modified CFs increased with the increase in equilibrium concentration of Cu(II) and Pb(II), and the isotherm was more suitable for Freundlich model fitting than that of the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities (qm) of Cu(II) and Pb(II) on different modified CFs were 60.72-81.26 mg/g and 102.58-161.72 mg/g, respectively, and presented the trend of amphoteric-auxiliary CFs > amphoteric CFs > CFs. Increasing pH and temperature and decreasing ionic strength and material dose were beneficial to Cu(II) and Pb(II) adsorption. The Cu(II) and Pb(II) adsorption process was a spontaneous, endothermic, and entropy-increasing reaction, and the adsorption rate was controlled by chemisorption. The adsorption amount of amphoteric-auxiliary CFs maintained about 65% of original materials after 3 times of regeneration. Electrostatic attraction, precipitation, complexation, and ion exchange were the main adsorption mechanisms. The cation exchange capacity and total pore volume of modified CFs were key to determining qm of Cu(II) and Pb(II).

Biofuels and Nanocatalysts: Python Boosting Visualization of Similarities

Among the most relevant themes of modernity, using renewable resources to produce biofuels attracts several countries' attention, constituting a vital part of the global geopolitical chessboard since humanity's energy needs will grow faster and faster. Fortunately, advances in personal computing associated with free and open-source software production facilitate this work of prospecting and understanding complex scenarios. Thus, for the development of this work, the keywords "biofuel" and "nanocatalyst" were delivered to the Scopus database, which returned 1071 scientific articles. The titles and abstracts of these papers were saved in Research Information Systems (RIS) format and submitted to automatic analysis via the Visualization of Similarities Method implemented in VOSviewer 1.6.18 software. Then, the data extracted from the VOSviewer were processed by software written in Python, which allowed the use of the network data generated by the Visualization of Similarities Method. Thus, it was possible to establish the relationships for the pair between the nodes of all clusters classified by Link Strength Between Items or Terms (LSBI) or by year. Indeed, other associations should arouse particular interest in the readers. However, here, the option was for a numerical criterion. However, all data are freely available, and stakeholders can infer other specific connections directly. Therefore, this innovative approach allowed inferring that the most recent pairs of terms associate the need to produce biofuels from microorganisms' oils besides cerium oxide nanoparticles to improve the performance of fuel mixtures by reducing the emission of hydrocarbons (HC) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx).

The correlation between structure and magneto optical properties of nanostructured Magnesium ferrites upon Molybdenum doping for magnetic and optoelectronic applicability

Nano-ferrite MgMoxFe2-xO4 (X = 0.0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, and 0.3) were synthesized employing citrate sol-gel auto combustion methodology. X-ray diffraction (XRD) reveals the crystal structure of the prepared samples. XRD scrutiny disclosed a single cubic spinel phase for all specimens. Furthermore, the Rietveld analysis based on structure refinement used to determine the microstructural parameters and evaluate the cation distribution. The findings showed that the average crystallite size was ∼39 nm, while the lattice constant ‘a’ increases with increasing Mo concentrations attributable to introducing Mo+6 to supplant Fe+3. The magnetic properties were investigated utilizing VSM magnetometer. The saturation magnetization (Ms) descends with escalating Mo+6 replacement. Consequently, both Rietveld scrutiny and saturation magnetization (Ms) results suggest that the Mo+6 supplanted Fe+3 in octahedral B-locations. On the other hand, reflectance and transmittance were used in optical properties to calculate the refractive index, n, and the extinction coefficient, k. The parameters of optical properties such as infinity, lattice and relaxation time of dielectric constant were estimated. In addition, complex optical conductivity, optical electronegativity and optical transitions of all studied samples were assessed. Finally, the parameters of opto-electrical application, such as the concentration, mobility and resistivity of optical carrier were appraised.
