Diverse Applications of Two-Dimensional Correlation Spectroscopy (2D-COS)

This second of the two-part series of a comprehensive survey review provides the diverse applications of two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) covering different probes, perturbations, and systems in the last two years. Infrared spectroscopy has maintained its top popularity in 2D-COS over the past two years. Fluorescence spectroscopy is the second most frequently used analytical method, which has been heavily applied to the analysis of heavy metal binding, environmental, and solution systems. Various other analytical methods including laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, dynamic mechanical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, capillary electrophoresis, seismologic, and so on, have also been reported. In the last two years, concentration, composition, and pH are the main effects of perturbation used in the 2D-COS fields, as well as temperature. Environmental science is especially heavily studied using 2D-COS. This comprehensive survey review shows that 2D-COS undergoes continuous evolution and growth, marked by novel developments and successful applications across diverse scientific fields.

Continuous operation of nano-catalytic ozonation using membrane separation coupling system: Influence factors and mechanism

The application of nano-catalysts in improving the ozonation removal efficiency for refractory organic compounds has been extensively investigated. However, cost-effective nano-catalysts separation remains a challenge. In this study, membrane separation processes were employed to separate nano-MgO catalysts from an ozonation system. A continuous nano-catalytic ozonation membrane separation (nCOMS) coupling system was successfully constructed for treating quinoline. The results showed that long hydraulic retention time (HRT) and high nano-MgO dosage could improve the quinolone removal efficiency but shorten operation cycles. At the optimal operation conditions of HRT = 4 h and nano-MgO dosage = 0.2 g/L, the nCOMS system achieved a stable quinoline removal efficiency of 85.2% for 240 min running with a transmembrane pressure lower than 10 kPa. The quinoline removal efficiency contribution for ozonation, catalysis and membrane separation was 57.1%, 24.9% and 18.0%, respectively. Compared to ozonation membrane separation system, the fouling rate index of the nCOMS system increased by 60% under optimal conditions, but the irreversible fouling was reduced to 28%. In addition, the nCOMS system exhibited reduced adverse effects of coexisting natural organic matter (NOM) on quinoline removal and membrane fouling. In conclusion, the nCOMS system demonstrated higher quinoline removal efficiency, lower irreversible fouling, and reduced adverse effect of coexisting NOM, thereby signifying its potential for practical applications in advanced treatment of industrial wastewater.

Insights into degradation of pharmaceutical pollutant atenolol via electrochemical advanced oxidation processes with modified Ti4O7 electrode: Efficiency, stability and mechanism

A novel active Ce-doped Ti₄O₇ (Ti/Ti₄O₇-Ce) electrode was prepared and evaluated for improvement of the refractory pollutants degradation efficiency in Electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs). The results showed that the addition of Ce in Ti/Ti₄O₇ electrode leading to great impact on •OH generation rate and electrode stability compared to pristine Ti/Ti₄O₇ electrode. Ti/Ti₄O₇-Ce electrode presented efficient oxidation capacity for pharmaceutical pollutant atenolol (ATL) in EAOPs, which could be attributed to the improvement of indirect oxidation mediated by electro-generated •OH, as the amount of •OH production was 16.5% higher than that in Ti/Ti₄O₇ within 120 min. The operational conditions greatly influenced the ATL degradation. The degradation efficiency of ATL increased as the current density, the degradation efficiency reached 100% under pH 4, but it just removed 81% of ATL under pH 10 after 120 min treatment. Results also suggested that the inhibiting effect from the ATL degradation was mostly associated with the decreased oxidation capacity induced by water hardness and natural organic matter (NOM). It displayed a satisfactory durability after 40 cycles of experimental detections in this research. The results of study suggested that Ti/Ti₄O₇-Ce was a promising electrode for the efficient degradation of PPCPs-polluted wastewater and provided constructive suggestion for the refractory pollutants of EAOPs.

Conversion and impact of dissolved organic matters in a heterogeneous catalytic peroxymonosulfate system for pollutant degradation

Dissolved organic matters (DOM) are widely present in different water sources, causing significant effects on water treatment processes. Herein, the molecular transformation behavior of DOM during peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation by biochar for organic degradation in a secondary effluent were comprehensively analyzed. Evolution of DOM was identified and inhibition mechanisms to organic degradation were elucidated. DOM underwent oxidative decarbonization (e.g., -C₂H₂O, -C₂H₆, -CH₂ and -CO₂), dehydrogenation (-2H) and dehydration reactions by ^·OH and SO₄^·-. N and S containing compounds witnessed deheteroatomisation (e.g., -NH, -NO₂+H, -SO₂, -SO₃, -SH₂), hydration (+H₂O) and N/S oxidation reactions. Among DOM, CHO-, CHON-, CHOS-, CHOP- and CHONP-containing molecules showed moderate inhibition while condensed aromatic compounds and aminosugars exhibited strong and moderate inhibition effects on contaminant degradation. The fundamental information could provide references for the rational regulation of ROS composition and DOM conversion process in a PMS system. This in turn offered theoretical guidance to minimize the interference of DOM conversion intermediates on PMS activation and degradation of target pollutants.

Impacts of Calcium Addition on Humic Acid Fouling and the Related Mechanism in Ultrafiltration Process for Water Treatment

Humic acid (HA) is a major natural organic pollutant widely coexisting with calcium ions (Ca²⁺) in natural water and wastewater bodies, and the coagulation-ultrafiltration process is the most typical solution for surface water treatment. However, little is known about the influences of Ca²⁺ on HA fouling in the ultrafiltration process. This study explored the roles of Ca²⁺ addition in HA fouling and the potential of Ca²⁺ addition for fouling mitigation in the coagulation-ultrafiltration process. It was found that the filtration flux of HA solution rose when Ca²⁺ concentration increased from 0 to 5.0 mM, corresponding to the reduction of the hydraulic filtration resistance. However, the proportion and contribution of each resistance component in the total hydraulic filtration resistance have different variation trends with Ca²⁺ concentration. An increase in Ca²⁺ addition (0 to 5.0 mM) weakened the role of internal blocking resistance (9.02% to 4.81%) and concentration polarization resistance (50.73% to 32.17%) in the total hydraulic resistance but enhanced membrane surface deposit resistance (33.93% to 44.32%). A series of characterizations and thermodynamic analyses consistently suggest that the enlarged particle size caused by the Ca²⁺ bridging effect was the main reason for the decreased filtration resistance of the HA solution. This work revealed the impacts of Ca²⁺ on HA fouling and demonstrated the feasibility to mitigate fouling by adding Ca²⁺ in the ultrafiltration process to treat HA pollutants.
